“I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are
W e've watched the "struggle theme" in the readings over the last few weeks change its emphasis from outer to inner, and back and forth, so that we can see the many facets of faithful discipleship. This week's readings are meditations on a verse in Exodus (24:7) where, when told what would be commanded of them, the Israelites had answered "naaseh v'nishma" (we will do and we will hear)-an odd thing to say. One would expect, "we'll listen and do what we hear." (And most English translations change the Hebrew wording to fit our preference for order.) The Rabbi's, however, instead of amending the Text, use it to teach--we "hear/understand/comprehend" by first "DOING." It is as we do what God wants, that we see the reason for it! So, in today's first reading, the path is laid out, and in the Letter of James, we are told again, how important the "doing" of the path of Jesus--the Sermon on the Mount--is; and in the Gospel we see that the "doing," while it does teach, teaches slowly--we don't get it right away--we focus on what is easy and postpone learning what is harder...which is fine, as long as we keep at it. Jesus tries to focus the comprehension and make it come faster, but rushing learning is probably never very successful. So what are YOU struggling with on the spiritual path? As we return from vacations, and settle in for the school year, it's good to think about what our lives need to be about, and then get busy doing it--making it happen! - Fr. -Padre Bill Axe “I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all. The worldwide ecological movement has already made considerable progress and led to the establishment of numerous organizations committed to raising awareness of these challenges" (14). - Pope Francis in Laudato Si To build and foster a Christian Community that offers the opportunity to experience God’s unconditional love and acceptance to all who come into contact with it. S often wonder if what we are teaching our youth about God makes him closer to them or more distant. We hear Christ say in today’s readings that God told the Israelites how important it was to focus on those things that brought God closer to us. As Americans, we are a people of laws, but do they bring us closer to God or make him more distant? eguido me pregunto si lo que les enseñamos a los jóvenes sobre Dios los hace sentir más cercas o más lejos de Dios. I have attended around 12 World Youth Days throughout this wonderful world and the thing that touches me most is to see the youth praising and giving joy to God. They meet other Christians who do not speak their language, yet they are close because of their faith. I pray that we here at St. Agatha’s can take today’s readings to heart and realize that it is the state of our heart that matters to God. Ministry Pope Francis Corner Reflections from The Joy of the Gospel Espacio para el Papa Francisco Reflexiones de La Alegría del Evangelio “The Church which “goes forth” is a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first (cf. 1 Jn4:19), and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. Such a community has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father’s infinite mercy” (24). St. Agatha Trivia Trivia de St. Agatha Did you know? Teach your children that they should never get into a car with someone they don’t know. They should also have a parent’s permission before they accept a ride with someone they do know. If you do have to send someone to pick up your kids, establish a family code word. If the driver gives your children the code word, they know that it’s safe to get in the car.
