Council passed a motion during its regular council meeting last week to list the town’s trailer court for sale by tender to any prospective developers, with the stipulation that the developer services the area and prepares lots to receive incoming mobile homes. As well, council passed a motion to spend approximately $14,000 to survey undeveloped residential lots in seven targeted areas: Urban Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Fifth Avenue, St. Mary Street, Kennedy Drive, and an area east of East Drive. Grimeau elected to Bird’s Pt. council The Esterhazy High School Junior Drama Club performed a variety of skits during the Twilight Theatre 2007 on Nov. 28. Fred Grimeau was elected as councillor of the Resort Village of Bird’s Point when 103 ratepayers cast their votes on Nov. 17. Grimeau was elected with 35 votes. He defeated Jason Nichols (25 votes), Anna Cawood (24), and Wayne Matthews (19). Ag ministry ‘a learning curve’ by Helen Solmes MLA Bob Bjornerud has wasted no time as the new agriculture minister. The Melville-Saltcoats MLA was appointed to the agriculture portfolio in the evening of Nov. 21. On the morning of the 22nd, he met with representatives from the grain growers, and cattle and hog producers to hear their plea for financial assistance to help them get through a crisis precipitated in part by the high Canadian dollar and escalating feed costs. “The learning curve is up,” Bjornerud told The Miner-Journal last week. “I haven’t had much time, not even to finish setting up my office. “Something has to happen quickly for the grain growers and cattle and hog producers. Most farmers are up against a wall with the high dollar and high feed costs and they are asking for help to get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’, possibly something through the CASE program. ‘It’s in the federal government hands – I am waiting to hear from Minister Gerry Ritz.” In the meantime, Bjornerud is exploring the possibilities of an interim loan from the provincial government, Most farmers are up against a wall with the high Canadian dollar and high feed costs Bob Bjornerud Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture he said. Farm lobbying has changed in the past decade since he has been a member of the legislature, according to Bjornerud. “When I was first elected in 1995, there were seven or eight farm lobby groups and they were all coming from different directions,’ he said. “Today, an organization like the Agriculture Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) potentially could represent everyone in farming. It is far easier for me to sit with one collective group, like APAS. “Yet, some farmers feel that they are left all alone out there. I hope that as we get set up that we will have people to take their calls. We want to be here to help the farmers and ranchers.” Minister Bjornerud is responsible also for the provincial crop insurance program. “Crop insurance is too expensive in the minds of many farmers and many are operating without it,” he said. “One bad year, one year of big payouts and premiums increased by 52 per cent. “The challenge will be to find a level playing field. “During the past five years, the province has cut back on its share and the federal government cut back on its contributions. By cutting back they left some dollars on the table that we hope to get back into the program.” Janet Ryan of Tantallon displays one of her crafts, a Red Hat Society figurine, during the Esterhazy Kin Club craft sale on Nov. 25 at the S.N. Boreen Community Centre. From Swift Current to the World Series, Cleveland makes baseball history enjoyed his best year with the Cardinals in 1973. For seven straight seasons – 1971 to 1977 – he won at least 10 regular-season games each year. Despite his success, he was traded to Boston in December 1973. Working out of the bullpen, the former starter got off to a slow start with the Red Sox in 1974. However, he played a prominent role in the team’s championship run the following year. Cleveland won four games in September to help the Red Sox edge out the Baltimore Orioles for the American League East Division crown. Boston’s playoff run continued with a sweep of the defendingchampion Oakland Athletics, but came up short of a World Series championship after falling to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games. After two more seasons with the Red Sox, a wealth Back to the Past 1905-2005 by Paul Spasoff league debut in October of that year. With the season nearly over, the right-hander from Saskatchewan debuted for the Cardinals against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Despite Cleveland giving up seven hits and four earned runs in four innings, the Cardinals edged the Phillies 6-5. After starting the 1970 season in the minors, he was back in the major leagues by August – for good. With 14 wins and an ERA of 3.01, Cleveland ter. Cleveland’s skills caught the attention of the National League’s St. Louis Cardinals, who eventually signed him to a contract. The next stop on his baseball journey was in Florida with the St. Petersburg Cardinals. Over the next couple of years he crisscrossed the country with other minor league teams before enjoying a breakout campaign in 1969. Playing in the Texas League, he had an earnedrun average (ERA) of 3.39 in 23 starts, and was tied for the league lead with 13 complete games. It led to a promotion to triple-A before making his major with 12 shutouts and 930 strikeouts. From 1991 to 1995, Cleveland served as a pitching coach in the Toronto Blue Jays’ minorleague system. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. (Paul Spasoff is a freelance writer with an interest in Western Canadian history. It turned out to be a short stay, as he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in December. Injuries, personal problems and a poor showing on the field led to Cleveland retiring in 1981. Ironically, his last game was against the Boston Red Sox on Sept. 23, 1981. Cleveland finished his career with 105 wins, 106 losses and 25 saves in 428 appearances. Yet, Cleveland was close to all of them. Or, at least he was. Reggie Cleveland got his start on the diamonds in Saskatchewan, but his baseball skills took him on the road. In addition to a tour through major league cities, they also took him around the world. The World Series, that is. Born in Swift Current on May 23, 1948, Cleveland was the first Canadianborn pitcher to start a World Series game. He earned that distinction with the Boston Red Sox in 1975. Before professional baseball, Cleveland had prairie baseball. As a child he played baseball in Swift Current and Moose Jaw before moving with his family to Alberta. Returning to Saskatchewan, Cleveland played for the Swift Current Indians of the South Saskatchewan Senior League at the age of 15. Monday, December 3, 2007 Muck master makes its debut: Remote-controlled by Helen Solmes Leonard Banga would, in his own words, “rather be blowing things up” yet, being the kind of guy that he is, Banga can design and build almost anything as easily as he can blow it apart. Banga, a former Esterhazy resident, is the owner of Xtreme Mining and Demolition Inc. Banga has designed and patented the Muck Master, a remote-control conveyor belt that is designed for mine operations, to pick up ore and transfer it to a main con- veyor belt. Banga had Saskatoon potash mines in mind when he designed the Muck Master, for clean up operations, he told The Miner-Journal. “The Saskatoon mines have a problem with ground pressure heaving,” he said. “Because of the ground pressure, they lose clearance in mined-out rooms and they have to cut back the floor. “Normally, the miner cuts and dumps the ore behind for a loader to pick up and transport, sometimes as far as one kilo- metre, to the main conveyor belt that runs to the mine shaft.” Banga teamed up with Jim McVicor of the Colonsay area and Rick Kachur of the Langenburg area. Their prototype made its debut in Saskatoon on Nov. 17, and is now installed underground at the PC Corey mine. Banga says that he has sold four Muck Masters to European mining companies and is confident that he has the attention of “every mine in the Saskatoon area”, he said. Correction: The name of the mayor of Rocanville who was interviewed and quoted in last week’s The Miner- Journal (Nov. 25, 2007) regarding the $1.8-billion PCS Rocanville expansion is Daryl Fingas. Leonard Banga of Xtreme Mining and Demolition has designed and built a prototype of the Muck Master, a remote-controlled transfer conveyor belt. Chance to learn to write fiction by Helen Solmes The Jean Pask Library will be offering a unique opportunity to young people to acquire the skills that are basic to creative writing during an eightweek fiction-writing course, under the direction of author Sandra Bell Kirchman, beginning in January. Kirchman is the author of Witchcanery, a fantasy fiction novel published this year. She is an editor, freelance writer, and former journalist. The course will deal with basic fiction writing,” she said. “We will work with the development of characters, plot and theme. We will explore description, avoiding purple prose, and of course, the tried-and-true begin- Residents of Sumner Place in Esterhazy gathered to extend their thanks to Pastors Charlene and Brad Nightingale of the Esterhazy Full Gospel Fellowship Church for the piano that the congregation donated to Sumner Place. We will work with snappy openings and satisfying resolutions to the story.” Kirchman knows firsthand some of the hurdles standing in the way of writing. In November, 2001, she challenged herself to write 1,650 words per day for 30 days during the National Novel Writers Month, an annual challenge to writers to produce a 50,000-word novel in one month. She credits her NaNoWriMOexperience for launching her fantasy fiction writing career. “The object [of the writing course will be] to encourage children who have an interest in writing to start . . .well . . to write,” she said. “At the end of the course, I am hoping that the children will have a short story in hand.” The writing course is designed for children in Grades 6 and up. The course is scheduled to start on Jan. 10. Registration deadline is Dec. 21. For information and to register, please call the Jean Pask Library. The image is 30 years out of date but it’s iconic and endures. Look at him there – Johnny Deadline – in the busy newsroom, wearing that cheap, wrinkled suit with his loud tie askew, his snap-brim fedora pushed back from his forehead. He’s crouched over his manual typewriter, pecking out his STOP THE PRESS hot story with two fingers. And but of course, a gasper hanging out of the corner of his mouth. Gotta have the dangling cigarette. A newspaper reporter without a cigarette is like Harry Potter without his specs. Snoopy without his doghouse. Ron McLean without Don Cherry. Yeah, well forget all that. Employees of Tribune Co., a giant media conglomerate that owns a stable of American newspapers and television stations, have just learned that if they smoke, they’ll be paying an extra hundred bucks a month over and above their regular medical premiums insurance. A crusade against smoking reporters. Is nothing sacred? ‘Tis but the latest assault on that sorry bunch of misfits in our midst – the tobacco addicted. We’ve chased them out of bars and restaurants. We’ve banned their odiferous practice in our workspaces and government buildings. Ontario has just passed a province-wide ban on smoking in all public institutions. Parts of California forbid smoking in parks and on beaches. How else can we put the boot in? Is there some new way we can make these wretches suffer even more? Smokers fight back, but either their heart isn’t in it or, thanks to the debilitating side effects of their habit, they just don’t have the wind to put up a decent fight. Their latest pathetic sally is the smokeless smoke. Really. Three Ontario entrepreneurs are looking to buy the Canadian rights to a Chinese-made (oh, swell! The folks who gave us lead-tainted kiddy toys) smokeless, tobacco-free cigarette. How would a smokeless, tobacco-free cigarette work, you ask? Well, it involves a nicotine cartridge, a microchip and some water-vapour mist. Your smoker sucks on an imitation cigarette while a battery-driven microchip activates an atomizer which puffs out a nicotine-flavoured plume of water vapour. Not quite as down-home friendly as lighting up a Lucky, is it? Such a change in such a short time. Is it really less than 20 years since smokers fired up with abandon on trains and buses, in waiting rooms and hospitals? Remember when airlines routinely reserved rows 16 through 18 for smokers? Good luck to non-smoking passengers in rows 15 and 19. And offices. Nobody batted an eye if you lit up in the office. Hell, there was an ashtray on every desk. The air in a typical office was blue with tobacco smoke, both new and second-hand. Non-smokers were grievously outnumbered and suffered silently. When I worked in radio, even the studios held ashtrays and guests were routinely offered a cigarette ‘for their nerves’. How the worm has turned. It’s a brave soul indeed who would flick his Zippo in an office setting these days. ‘Firing up’ has become a firing offence at many firms in Canada and the U.S. Most office buildings are identifiable during office hours by the clots of desperate, shivering nicotine addicts clustered around their doorways, getting their fix. Needless to say, one huge benefit for white collar workers is that the air in their offices, once noxious and riddled with carcinogens, is now pristine and pure as a forest glen. Not. The latest news is that laser printers, a fixture in pretty well every office in the land, have been quietly spewing out particle emissions far deadlier than tobacco smoke since they were installed. In fact, one study suggests that spending too much time near an office copier is worse than sitting by a guy puffing two packs a day in the next cubicle. Ironically, the office workers likely to be least affected by toxic printers are the smokers. They’ll be out on the sidewalk having a smoke. Is that a smoker’s cough I hear – or is it smokers having the last laugh after all? Looking Back Fifty years ago, 1957 Ross Thatcher, Liberal and former CLF member of parliament, spoke to a banquet arranged by the Saltcoats Liberal Association. The head table included J. G. Gardiner, MP; Hamilton McDonald, provincial liberal leader; Dr. H.S. Jamieson, provincial president; Rod Clements, MLA; Jim Snedker, vice president of Saltcoats Liberal Association; and Mayor John Kacsmar of Esterhazy. McDonald spoke briefly, followed by Gardiner who introduced the guest speaker, Thatcher. Margaret Bily of Marchwell was pianist for the evening. The banquet was followed by a public dance in the Langenburg hall. Forty years ago, 1967 Several entries from the Hazelcliffe and Tantallon area won prizes in the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Mike Smart of Hazelcliffe took fourth prize with his purebred hereford and 13th with a crossbred. Robert Miller took 13th prize in a class of 26 with his Aberseen Angus steer. Paul Kendal placed high as well, taking seventh place with his crossbred entry. Thirty years ago, 1977 Esterhazy Town Council decided not to enforce a curfew for the town, despite their past concerns. The decision was made after the councillors studied a sample curfew enforced in Hudson Bay. Members took note of the fact that the cool weather would put a hold on vandalism for the winter season. Once council member believed that the damaging acts were probably being performed by persons over the age of 16 who would not be affected by the bylaw in any case. Mayor Ken Theaker had voiced support for the bylaw stating that the majority of the feedback he had received on the subject in fact was in favor of such a move. Twenty years ago, 1987 A mining machine which had been trapped in flood waters at K-2 mine for approximately 19 months was about to be recovered. The machine, valued at more than $1 million in 1987, was trapped when the inflow of water suddenly increased during a shutdown period. Tom Davies, IMC Manager of Industrial Relations, said that, although the machine was visible and could be revived by wading through the water, it had yet to be determined whether it would have to be dismantled in order to retrieve it. After it was to be retrieved, the corporation would determine whether the machine would still be usable and if so, what parts would have to be replaced. compiled by Lexi Gillespie Publisher/Owner: Brenda Matchett Editor: Helen Solmes Page 4 The Miner-Journal, Esterhazy, Sask. Office Manager: Christina Holmberg Advertising/Sales: Shelley Gillespie Looking Back/Office: Lexi Gillespie Monday, December 3, 2007 EDITORIAL Sask. party cabinet good for rural Saskatchewan helen solmes Meeting blue fish head on I have to admit that I, like Fred (Blue Fish and Figgy Pudding, The Miner-Journal, Nov. 26, 2007), have had my share of blue fish days. Fred is not alone – blue fish is simply code for a word, a phrase, a tune, or perhaps a jingle that rises out of subconscious and commands more attention than one cares to waste on silly obsessions. Experience has taught me that the most effective way to handle a blue fish is to meet it head on, in cyberspace. Last week’s blue fish came as no surprise. No sooner had Remembrance Day passed when the Christmas season went into full swing. The first Christmas lyrics over the airwaves were the traditional ‘figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer”. Like Fred’s blue fish, figgy pudding rattled around in my head for hours until I relented and turned to the Internet for the scoop on figgy pudding. The good cheer needed no explanation – anything alcoholic that warms a body on a cold winter’s night will do, anything from brandy, to grog, or a hot-buttered rum. It was the figgy pudding that had me baffled. Is it pudding? Or is pudding a misnomer, like sweetbreads that are neither sweet nor bread, or like sugar plums – sweet but may not be, and likely are not, plums? The simplest reference to figgy pudding that I found on the Internet compares it to carrot pudding and describes it as a rich medley of figs and other dried fruit, breadcrumbs, spices, suet, and an egg-based custard, all of which is steamed, not baked. However, there are many variations to the simple figgy pudding. Some recipes call for figgy bread that is baked then cubed and crumbled into the fig and fruit mixture, rather than breadcrumbs. Others call for a pastry shell filled with the fruit, spice and custard and topped with pastry, then steamed. Pastry or no pastry, figgy bread or bread crumbs, suet or butter – there are so many variations. One common ingredient to any of the recipes that I found was a topping – either heated golden syrup, custard, melted butter and sugar – with or without brandy – or the more familiar hard sauce made from confectioner’s sugar and butter – again, with or without brandy. The thought came to me that figgy pudding would make a perfect hospitality gift and my contribution to the family dinner; however, the more I searched the Internet, the more complicated matters got. Figgy pudding sounds like something that should be prepared only a day before serving, not weeks before, and with Christmas dinner in Ontario, and a flight to catch on Dec. 24, my contribution again this year will have to be the cup of good cheer. For anyone who is inclined to serve carrot pudding at this time of year and who would like to try a more traditional pudding, check out the following websites for some suggestions: www.christmas-time.com/ct-figgy.htm www.danampersanderic.org/food/zaf/figgy_pudding.htm www.christmas-time.com/ct-snow.htm www.godecookery.com/friends/frec74.htm www.readersdigest.ca/christmas/recipes_party/office_party/s ugar.htm OR: Call into The Miner-Journal and ask for a copy of any number of recipes for figgy pudding, sugarplums, and snowballs. After years of being on the political outside looking in, fortunes have certainly reversed for rural Saskatchewan. The cabinet new Premier Brad Wall appointed late last month is about as good as it’s ever going to get for rural voters. Of course, this was pretty much expected. With 28 of its 38-member caucus coming from outside the four major centres of Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, it was fully expected that rural Saskatchewan would enjoy the most cabinet representation it has had since the Grant Devine years. However, with 14 of 18 cabinet ministers coming from the country, it may be better than rural Saskatchewan could have imagined. Proportionally speaking, it has more cabinet ministers than ever and all most important portfolios to boot. To begin, there’s the new Premier from Swift Current. Certainly, Swift Current had high-ranking representation before with Pat Smith serving as deputy premier in the late 1980s. But as Estevan found out in the 1980s, nothing beats having the Premier as your MLA. The Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz has represented Canora-Pelly since 1995. Similarly, Finance Minister Rod Gantefoer (Melfort), First Nations and Metis Relations and Northern Affairs Minister June Draude (KelvingtonWadena) and Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud (Saltcoats and now MelvilleSaltcoats) are also 12-year MLAs. (It should also be noted that the last NDP agriculture minister Mark Wartman was from the city. Also, the appointment of a deeply rooted farm girl like Alanna Koch from Edenwold as the new deputy minister of agriculture makes a loud statement about the Sask. Party government commitment to rural Saskatchewan.) The longest serving cabinet minister, however, is Government Services Minister Dan D’Autremont (Cannington) who also has responsibilities for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming and Information Technology. D’Autremont has 16 years in the legislature. Serving nearly as long is Kindersley’s Bill Boyd who was also first elected in 1991, but sat out last term. As Energy and Intergovernmental Affairs, the former Conservative leader will be responsible for weighty issues ranging from the equalization file to the forestry secretariat. Wayne Elhard (Cypress Hills) with nine years in the assembly is responsible for Highways – a portfolio always critical for rural people. Three rural MLAs first elected in 1999 all have hefty responsibilities in cabinet. Donna Harpauer (Humboldt) is responsible for Social Services, Don McMorris (Indian HeadMilestone) is responsible for Health and Lyle Stewart (Thunder Creek) takes on new Murray Mandryk reports from the Saskatchewan Legislature Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation. The latter portfolio may be especially important to rural Saskatchewan as the new Saskatchewan Party government looks for ways to strengthen the rural economy. Rounding out the rural cabinet is Rosthern’s Nancy Heppner. Despite having less than a year of experience in the Saskatchewan legislature, Heppner was given the major Environment portfolio. None of the newly elected rural MLAs were included in cabinet but Meadow Lake’s Jeremy Harrison (assigned to the Energy Minister with responsibilities for northern resources and oil sands development), Yorkton’s Greg Ottenbreit (assigned to the social services minister for community-based organization initiatives) and RosetownElrose’s Jim Reiter (assigned to the education minister for property tax initiatives) all received legislative secretary duties. Michael Chisholm has also been assigned as legislative secretary to the premier responsible for Western Canadian Co-operation. Mildly interesting is the fact that none of the four rural seats that had cabinet ministers under the NDP government have a cabinet minister representing them now. Former health minister and Battlefords MLA Len Taylor is in the current opposition caucus. Ottenbreit (replacing former NDP deputy premier Clay Serby in Yorkton) and Harrison (replacing Crowns and economic development minister Maynard Sonntag in Meadow Lake) are only legislative secretaries. And Nadine Wilson, who defeated Co-op Minister Lon Borgerson in Saskatchewan Rivers, did not receive an appointment. But there are far more happy rural voters than unhappy ones after Wall’s cabinet selections. Rural Saskatchewan has perhaps its best voice ever at the cabinet table. Please sign them and include a phone number. a message from Garry Breitkreuz, MP, Yorkton-Melville constituency Since I was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1993, I’ve been interested in bringing together those who enjoy outdoor sports like hunting and fishing with our politicians who make the laws we live by. The introduction of the Outdoors Caucus in March, 2006, has helped to provide a conduit into the heart of Parliament for this important outdoors constituency. Hunting, fishing, sport shooting and trapping are part of our Canadian heritage and there is every reason they should be represented in Ottawa. This group of MPs and Senators has now grown to approximately 80 and is becoming one of the largest caucuses on Parliament Hill. I was proud to get this caucus started and I share the co-chair duties with Liberal MP Larry Bagnell, who represents the Yukon. Our fledgling non-partisan caucus is an excellent meeting point for Canada’s decision-makers and the people who enjoy the great outdoors. The mission of our Outdoors Caucus includes protecting hunting, fishing, trapping and sport shooting activities by law. We want the public to support these activities as acceptable, traditional and environmentally sustainable activities that promote safety, conservation and the enjoyment of Canada’s great natural beauty. Are the outdoors relevant to the Canadian lifestyle? Some five million of us invest $10 billion a year in these activities and it makes no difference where we live. We are fortunate in rural Saskatchewan to have the outdoors very near to where we live. At the same time, the people who live in our cities flock to the outdoors for weekends and vacations. Our wonderful natural heritage stretches from coast to coast in every province and territory. This Canadian way of life must be preserved for our recreation and pleasure. The Outdoors Caucus will be examining management of our invaluable resources to ensure Canadians can always enjoy them. We need to closely monitor and manage our public lands, waterways, fish, wildlife and habitat. The MPs and Senators who comprise the Outdoors Caucus will work closely with the sporting community, the industries that manufacture and sell outdoors gear, and the conservation agencies that lobby the government for funding. I believe there is a real need in Canada for the Outdoors Caucus because Canadians who enjoy these activities need a voice on Parliament Hill. There are groups in society that would like to get rid of hunting, fishing, trapping and sport shooting. It has been a challenge to get this caucus organized, but the more people learn about it, the more they share our goal and see its value. Generating the political will to sew the Outdoors Caucus into Canada’s fabric will be a legacy to us all. Monday, December 3, 2007 The Miner-Journal, Esterhazy, Sask. Monday, December 3, 2007 OBITUARIES Ellen Clara Tocher (Smart) Ellen was born Jan. 16, 1916, to Jim and Mary (Doisy) Smart in the Hazel Cliffe district. She married Frank Tocher on Sept. 6, 1937, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Esterhazy. They farmed in the Grove Park district until they moved into Esterhazy in 1967. During this time Ellen spent 20 years as postmistress out of their home on the farm. While on the farm, besides raising her family and her postal job, she boarded the Grove Park School teacher for a number of years. Ellen took part in the Tantallon Agriculture Fair for 60 years. She was both a director and exhibitor at the fair. Her dedication and talents to the fair were shared by her grandchildren, whom she guided and taught many of the crafts to, and entered them. As a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 39 years, Ellen was a dedicated member holding various executive positions. She was a member of the Golden Jets in Esterhazy where she was secretary for 10 years. After moving to Esterhazy, Ellen became the seamstress for both Clements’ and Tommy’s stores for many years and worked as a seamstress in the Esterhazy area for 30 years. Many persons wore the labor of her works. She enjoyed and took pride in her knitting, crocheting and making baby quilts. Attending sporting activities like hockey, ball and curling were special to her, especially those involving her family. She was known to hold a certain spot in the hockey rink when she attended any game. She enjoyed taking trips with her grandchildren to visit other family members, with her sisters to see Alaska. Spending time at her family’s cabins was time she looked forward to. Her family was always her pride and joy. Ellen lived in Sumner Place for 17 years and then moved to her last earthly home, the Esterhazy Centennial Special Care Home in June 2004. There she died peacefully with her family by her side. Ellen was predeceased by her father in 1944, and her mother in 1954, her husband, Frank in April of 1973; foster daughter Gail in April, 1983; son Kenneth in July, 1983; daughter-in-law Ann in May, 2004; brother Mike of Esterhazy; half-sister Flo Smith of Calgary in 2000; sister Rosie Wautier of Aldergrove, B.C., in 2005; sister-inlaw Eunice Smart of Esterhazy in 2006 and sister-in-law Liz Common in 2007. She leaves to mourn her loss son Roy (Karlene) of Melville; daughter-in-law Cecile of Balgonie; son Floyd (Angela) of Esterhazy; daughter Donna (Pieter) of Kelvington; sisters Ethel and Doreen and sister-in-law Kae Tucker. Thirteen grandchildren, sixteen greatgrandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren mourn her passing, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ochapowace narrowed the score to 2-1 then the Flyers turned it up a notch and won by the tune of 9-1. Derek Leidl played a strong game in net. Brett Harrison led the way with a hat trick followed by Dave Shields, Riley Woytas, Scott Vaughn all with two-goal performances. The loud applause came for the little future Flyers. The pre-novice teams have either one or two players skate around with the Flyers and stay out on the ice for O’Canada. This is pretty special for these young future Flyers. Flyers won third in a See page 15 for Midget league game results row as they jumped all over Moosomin on Nov. 24 for an Esterhazy 6-1 victory. Dustin Bear was about eight minutes away from a shut-out. He had a solid game in goal. Riley Woytas was flying as he popped in three beautiful goals along with two assists for a five-point night. Brett Harrison, Dave Shields and Jeff Nordquist all had single markers. Flyers now go on the road for three games. Proposed Amendment to the Official Community Plan (OCP) The main reason for the amendment is to make minor changes to the map and text as requested by the Minister of Government Relations as part of the approval process for Bylaw No. 2-2004 (which adopted the OCP). The changes will better explain the reason why specific areas have been designated as Environmentally Sensitive or as Historic Sites. The reference to the Carlton Trail Regional Park on the map is also being clarified. The other reasons for changing the OCP are to clarify that one non-residential subdivision per Quarter Section will be allowed per quarter section, and to allow a maximum of three residential subdivisions per quarter, instead of the current maximum of two. 2. Proposed Zoning Bylaw Amendment The main reason for the amendment is to make minor changes to the map and text as requested by the Minister of Government Relations as par t of the approval process for Bylaw No. 3-2004 (which adopted the Zoning Bylaw). The changes will better explain the reason why specific areas have been designated as Environmentally Sensitive Overlay District, Agricultural Qu’Appelle District or as an Agricultural District. The reference to the Carlton Trail Regional Park on the map is also being clarified. The other reasons for changing the Zoning Bylaw are to conform to the new OCP policy and to clarify that one non-residential subdivision will be allowed per Quarter section, and to allow a maximum of three residential subdivisions per Quarter Section, instead of the current maximum of two. The proposed bylaws may be inspected at the Municipal Office from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday (excluding holidays). Copies of the bylaw are available at a cost. Council will hold a public meeting at the Municipal Office on December 13, 2007 at 2 p.m. to hear any person who wants to comment on the proposed amendments. Council will also consider written comments received at the meeting (or delivered to the undersigned at the municipal office before the hearing). The Ochapowace team owned the first period and came away with a 4-1 lead. Scoring the Flyers lone goal was Caleb Zack on a pass from Ryley Schentag. The Flyers regrouped for the second period and outscored the locals by a 5-1 margin to take a 6-5 lead. Bear potted five goals and added three assists for a very impressive eight point night. The Flyers were again on the road for a game versus the Moosomin/ Rocanville squad in Rocanville. The first period featured tight checking and good goaltending with Moosomin/Rocanville getting the only marker. Ryley Schentag tied the score on a nifty passing play from Dacey Schentag and Steve Rice. Dacey Schentag added two shorthanded goals before the period ended to put the Flyers up 3-1. In the majority of instances, a nod or hello is exchanged as each of us hurries on our way. Occasionally, I run into someone I consider quite extraordinary, though it would be difficult to tell at a first, hurried glance. To truly learn about and begin to appreciate someone requires that I stop and actually engage in conversation, usually something I’m too busy to do as I concentrate on my cardio-vascular conditioning (well that’s my excuse for being out there). One such individual is Andy H. I first met Andy as he was hiking past my playpen, as my wife refers to my workshop. On his way to who knows where, Andy stopped and chatted. I learned Andy’s story. I’ve encountered Andy several times since then as he and I do our morning or evening walks. Andy will generally stop and exchange pleasantries before we set off again to complete our respective rambles. Andy, can be seen, cane in hand as he completes his four mile circuit every morning or as he walks his three miles every evening. I have to admit I’m not nearly as faithful to my walking program as Andy seems to be to his. He always seems to be in good humour, sharing some pleasant joke or comment of the day. Andy always seems to have a smile on his face and in all the times I’ve chatted with him, Andy never complains nor appears bitter with his lot in life. He jokingly tells me he’s even challenged our mayor to a walking competition. I’m informed by my Friday lunch buddy that Andy is quite a stained glass artisan.
