There is a new haven
for farm animals in need
of
rescue
in
Saskatchewan
as
of
March, 2009 – The
Chodove Animal Rescue
and
Maintenance
(CHARM) Farm.
Former Esterhazy residents Paulette Gilchuk,
and her husband Greg
Mikolas and three children run the farm. It is
located in the Last
Mountain Valley west of
Strasbourg,
Sask.,
CHARM takes in horses,
cattle, sheep, goats, hogs
and other domestic farm
animals from bad situations or from people who
no longer have a purpose
or desire for their livestock and provides a nurturing environment for
these animals to live a
healthy life or get nursed
to health as the case may
be.
The CHARM Farm will
open its gates to the general public some time in
May for viewing and petting. “A large part of what
we are doing includes
education of the public
about what purpose Farm
Animals serve, as well as
the proper way to look
after them. The kids will
really benefit from finding out where all the good
food they find at the grocery store comes from as
well as some hands on
experience
collecting
eggs, or milking a cow or
a goat.”
Originally planned to
start accepting livestock
in June of this year, one
question on a bulletin
board online opened the
doors for people to
request The CHARM
Farm’s services. “It was
really
unbelievable”,
Gilchuk says, “I asked if
there would be a need for
what we were planning
and next thing you know
there were horses in the
barn”. There are present-
ly seven horses calling
the farm home, including
three light horses, three
draft horses and a two
week old foal. The draft
horses will be put to work
giving wagon and sleigh
rides, as well as doing
horse drawn farming
demonstrations and winter chores like cleaning
barns and hauling bales.
“Perhaps the biggest
challenge has been our
most
recent
rescue.
'Doma' came to us at two
days old after her mother
rejected her. Twelve feedings a day were hard on
the family, but everyone
chipped in and that little
filly is doing just fine.”
And the biggest surprise?
“Definitely the Belgian
mares. Their shear size is
intimidating, but they are
truly gentle giants and
really crave attention.”
The CHARM Farm
operates solely on public
support and donations for
things like feed, veterinary supplies, building
supplies for the barns
and pens, fencing equipment and supplies – all
the things necessary to
provide proper care for
Animals in need, some of
which are quite distressed before being rescued. “One group started
up a collection of tack
supplies for us and a lady
from Qu'Appelle has
offered us some greatly
needed storage barrels
and other equipment so
some of that stuff is well
stocked”, said Gilchuk,
“but now that spring has
sprung the fences take
precedence over everything. We’ve had to turn
away a couple requests
until we have more room,
and for that we need to
get fence up.”

Sandra
(Marsh)
Helmeczi was born May 30,
1946, in North Battleford,
Sask. She grew up on the
family farm located in
Sandwith,
Sask.
She
attended
school
in
Sandwith as well as in
Glenbush.
After high school she
attended university in
Saskatoon, and then took a
secretarial
course
in
Regina. As it turned out
the home where she chose
to room and board at was
the home of her future sister-in-law. In 1966, Sandra
met the love of her life,
Laddie Helmeczi. They
married on Oct. 14, 1967,
and moved to Esterhazy to
take over the family farm.
Through the years their
door has been open for
many social gatherings.
Sandra always did her best
to make everyone feel welcome.
Sandra enjoyed many
activities during her life.
Growing up she was active
in her local 4-H club, was
an avid curler, loved to
bake, plant flowers, play
cards, go to bingo and
spend time with her family
and friends.
Sandra
enjoyed her involvement
with the church, which
included working as the
custodian and as a convener.
Sandra will be deeply
missed and forever remembered by her husband of 41
years, Laddie; her children

Burial was held on April
22, 2009, with Father
Albert Schmitz officiating.
Pallbearers were Sheldon
Banow, Richard Helmeczi,
Travis Jacob, Curtis Jacob,
Alexander Crawley and
Dustin Roberts. Interment
was at Kaposvar Cemetery.
Donations may be made to
St. Anthony’s Hospital or
to a charity of your choice.

Lion Keith Switzer was one of 240 riders to make his way through
Kensington Lake during the Bredenbury Lions Club derby on April 18. The
money raised from the ATV derby will help the Bredenbury Lions to continue to offer financial assistance to families in the community to support
the School Leadership Forum at the Saltcoats school, to purchase new playground equipment, to host the Bredenbury Remembrance Day Service, and
to fund free hamburgers and juice during the Bredenbury light-up night,
Santa visits, the community Christmas social, Mother’s and Father’s Day
brunches, the Yorkton Regional High School Grade 12 scholarship for a
Saltcoats school students, and other projects.

Fatality results
from ATV accident
Moosomin RCMP are
investigating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) collision that claimed the life
of 28-year-old Darren J.
Friesen of Wawota.
The collision occurred
on Saturday, April 25, at
approximately 7:30 p.m.,
northwest of Rocanville,
according to Sgt. Gordon
Stewart of the Moosomin
RCMP detachment.
“Friesen was killed
when the ATV he was
operating ran into a
gully and rolled on top of
him,” he said.

continuing their investigation.

Marylin was involved in
many of the community
organizations, from the
church to all the activities
of her children.
Once the kids were in
school Marylin began volunteering and held various
positions within different
businesses to keep herself
busy. She enjoyed babysitting children in the community. She always had an
open door to all her children’s friends taking them
in and treating them like
her own.
As the grandchildren
came along she made sure
each of them knew how
loved they were. Marylin
thrived on having all of
them come down for both
short and long visits. They
always looked forward to
the
birthday
and
Christmas gifts as they
knew it would be a gift
picked with love. There
was nothing more special
to her than the birth of her
great-granddaughter Ava,
to whom she became
guardian angel on Ava’s
third birthday.
Marylin was known for
her baking. You knew
when you walked into her

April 19, 2009
Marylin was born to Asa
and Dora Caswell in
Kingston, Ont., on Aug. 28,
1943. She was the second
of seven children. They
moved from Kingston to
Killarney then on to Moose
Jaw. They then made their
home in Winnipeg.
Marylin met Garnet in
1960, while Marylin was a
waitress at a local restaurant. They married on
March 11, 1961, on her
mother’s birthday. Marylin
and Garnet made their
home in Tantallon in the
apartment above Paynter’s
Store, later moving to
Qu’Appelle St. They had
four children, Cheryl
home that you would not
walk out hungry. She made
sure that everyone who
entered her home felt at
home.
Marylin was a devoted
daughter to her mother
Dora, a loving wife, mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and
friend. She cherished her
friendships, especially the
times with the “Birthday
Girls”. Marylin will be
remembered for her sense
of humour, her kind heart
and her warm contagious
laugh. When you left her
presence, you always felt
special.

her memory her loving
husband of 48 years

and was able to return
home a few days later. A

at the General hospital in
Regina. She was transferred to St. Anthony’s
hospital in Esterhazy on
April 24. Cards, flowers

ambulance on April 18
but has since returned
home. A get well card was

Dubuc
recently after spending
the winter in Ontario. He
is anxious to resume
farming in our area. He
was able to attend the
potluck supper at the Hut
on April 8. Following a
tasty potluck meal, Art
and Sylvia Stadel did a
fine job of entertaining
the gathering with duets
accompanied with omnichord and guitar. Jessie
Stokes took home the Hut
fundraiser prize and Ken
Allan the door prize. Out

Thea
Holmstrom
passed away at St.
Anthony’s Hospital in
Esterhazy early in the
morning of April 12, 2009,
aged 65, in the presence
of a family member, after
a prolonged battle with
cancer.
Born in Amsterdam,
Holland on June 1, 1943.
Thea moved with her parents to Canada in 1952.
The oldest of seven children, Thea competed her
schooling in Saskatoon
OBITUARIES
and was living in Delisle
and working in the family
bakery prior to meeting
her husband, Robert
(Bob) Holmstrom. As Bob
worked for the Royal
Bank, they lived in many
towns
around
Saskatchewan including
Yorkton where Duane
was born, Swift Current
where Jim was born, and
in Moosomin, Cadillac,
Invermay and Qu’Appelle
prior to coming to
Esterhazy in 1977. Her
children, Duane and Jim,
graduated from Central
High School in Esterhazy
prior to Thea and Bob
moving to Churchbridge
in 1989.
Thea loved working
with and helping people.
This showed in the time
that she devoted to working with the Legion auxiliary, the church choir,
coaching bowling, or lending a helping hand to
someone in need. Thea
was always the one to
emphasize the positive
and provide a quick smile
to cheer up those around
her. Many hobbies also
helped to enrich her time,
including golfing, caring
for her yard and flower
garden, making crafts,
knitting, crocheting, and
reading.
Thea was predeceased
by her parents Adrian and
Henny van der Horst, and
one
sister,
Jeanette
(Janey). She is survived
by her husband Bob and
two sons Duane (Lillian)
and Jim (Audra), sisters
Nettie (Bryce) Souster,
Johanna (Ron) Coward,
and
Audrey
(Dan)
Haslehurst, her brothers

Prairie Pride band supplied good dance music
and a lovely lunch was
served by the Potashville
Club. On May 9, Len
Gadica will be the band
for the last singles dance
of the season. The community appreciates the
support given by the
Singles Club to help cover
maintenance costs for the
hall.
The friendship Club
held the monthly birthday party on April 22 in
the Hut. Birthday guests
were Mary Ramstead and
Earle Moller with special
guest, Iris Groseth from
Estevan. Iris was a faithful member of the club
before
retiring
to
Estevan. Leona Kaczur
supplied the birthday
cake and everyone sang
happy birthday to Mary
and Earle. After enjoying
a big birthday lunch with
refreshments a card was
signed
for
Brenda
Pedersen who is in the
hospital. The next community social will be
another potluck supper
in the Hut on May 13.
Every one is welcome to
attend and meet neighbours and friends before
the spring work really
begins.

his grandparents Len
and Gladys Simle. Ron
Topliss of Saskatoon was
a coffee row guest recently while visiting relatives
in the area. Ray Freed of
Vancouver was home for
Easter visiting his dad,
John Freed and accompanied him to Swan River,
MB to visit Paul and
Kathy Freed and family.
Ray also visited with the
gang from coffee row.
Belated birthday greetings to Dubuc’s Simle
twins, Marie Wilson in
the Esterhazy Care home
and Martha Simle in the
Langenburg Care home.
There was great rejoicing
when four Simle sisters
met in Langenburg for
this special occasion.

were able to help celebrate. Niece Sharon
Tobbernor of Spy Hill
brought a decorated
birthday cake. Three
Dubuc folk, Gladys Simle,

Mary Ramstead were
also in attendance.

a.m. Everyone is warmly

Thursday, April 16 at Our
Lady of Victories Roman
Catholic
Church
in
Esterhazy. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m.
on Friday, April 17, also
at Our Lady of Victories.

name can be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society
or the palliative care unit
at St. Anthony’s Hospital,
Esterhazy.

evening April 25 with a
dance in the Memorial
Hall. Steak supper at
Bernier Street Hotel as
well as an awards and
trophies presentation at
the Hut for Qu’Appelle
Valley Wildlife Club. It
was a busy supper time
at the hotel before the
activities began. They
plan to serve steak suppers every Saturday
night.

TOWN FOREPERSON
The Town of Bredenbury, is now accepting resumes for the position of Town
Foreperson. The applicant must have a valid driverʼs license, a Grade 12 (or
equivalent), and their own transportation. This position requires an individual
who is self-motivated, can work independently, and can take direction well.
The duties include but are not limited to: snow removal, grading, picking up
garbage, cutting grass, cutting trees, daily water testing, daily wastewater
testing, and equipment maintenance. Individual must be able to operate a
grader, tractor, lawnmower, chainsaw, etc.
Preference will be given to individual with a Class 1 Certificate for Water and
Waste Water. The successful candidate must be on call for emergency
situations.
