Trimble Speaks In AJ Jan. 6
Known as the “Will Rogers
of Arizona,” Marshall Trimble will bring his unique
brand of Arizona history, humor, songs and stories in
“Trimble’s Tales” as AJUSD
launches its 2014 Arizona
Lecture Series at Apache
Junction High School’s Performing Arts Center Monday,
January 6.
Serving as Arizona’s official
historian, Trimble is one of
the state’s most popular and
colorful personalities and frequent guest on stage, radio
and television, as well as a favorite resource for newspapers and magazines on all
matters concerning Arizona
and Western history. Trimble
is also a prolific writer with
Marshall Trimble
some 19 books to his credit
including Arizona, a Panoramic History of a Frontier
State, and Roadside History
of Arizona. Another great Arizonan, Barry Goldwater,
once wrote: “Arizona’s colorful history is alive and well
with Marshall Trimble.”

Investigation leads to arrest of 2 men
The Apache Junction Police Department (AJPD)
began 2013 with an investigation into the murder of an
Apache Junction businessman who was found in his
shop on January 8.
John W. Murrell, 63, owner of Watches, Watches,
Watches at 2033 W. Apache
Trail was found dead inside
the store at 11 p.m. Tuesday,
Jan. 8, after police responded to a welfare check, according to Chief Tom Kelly.
Investigators said the victim
was killed with a gun.
Murrell’s car, a 2005 Black
PT Cruiser, was also missing from the business.
Two suspects were arrested the following month but
weren’t immediately identified “in case additional
suspects were involved,”
according to Kelly.
The name of Darrin J.
Craig, 44, of San Tan Valley, was released when he
appeared in court on March
25. Craig was officially
charged with 1st Degree
Murder.
On April 24, 2013, a second suspect was booked
into the Pinal County Detention Center and chargeed with First Degree

without bond.

Prescott Job
For Apache Junction Police Chief Jerald Monahan,
accepting a conditional offer to head up the City of
Prescott’s police department
all came down to location.
He and his wife, Shelley,
were scouting possible retirement locations in Prescott
in early fall. Two months ago
the Prescott chief stepped
down from his position. That
was an intriguing notion to
Monahan.
“It’s the location in the
state that we’re interested in,” Monahan told
the Apache Junction/Gold
Canyon News.
Monahan was chosen for
the Prescott position from
a pool of 30 applicants. He
replaces Andy Reinhardt,
interim chief of police.

2010, and the Kelly Tate case
in September 2009. In both
cases the Sheriff’s Office
search and rescue team came
up empty-handed for days
and SSAR later came on the
scene and made quick discoveries.

A rare snowfall covered Superstition Mountain on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, and caused the closure of U.S. 60 between Superior and Miami for several hours. The Weather
Service reported up to 0.75 inch of precipitation in parts of
the Valley, with some areas getting hail, sleet or graupel (like
freezing rain), and even some snow. The above photo of Superstition Mountain was taken by Curt Fonger of Gold Canyon. An even rarer event happened when Apache Junction
and Gold Canyon residents awoke Thursday morning, Feb.
21, to a blanket of snow covering their yards and streets.

the man lived for more than
48 hours after his wife first
contacted the Pinal County
Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and
reported her husband missing. PCSO Search and Rescue spent more than 800
man-hours and four days
searching for her husband,
Chris Hensley, after he failed
to return from a hiking trip.
Hensley’s body was then
found in less than two hours
after a search began by the
volunteer

Search and Rescue team
(SSAR).
Tonya Hensley told the Pinal County Board of Supervisors on April 24, 2013, that a
“botched search operation”
by Sheriff Paul Babeu’s Office resulted in her husband’s
lying at the bottom of a canyon near the Superstition
Mountains for four days.

AJ’s inaugural ‘Two Ton
Transformation’ was declared
a success in improving the
health and lives of residents
of Apache Junction and the
surrounding area.
In an effort to help ‘Change
your health! Change your
life! Change your community!” the Apache Junction
Wellness Partnership encouraged people of all ages to join
the Two Ton Transformation
in order to improve their
weight, blood pressure and
percentage of body fat, as
well as learn more about improving their lives in eight
domains of wellness—Physical, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, Environmental, Occupational and
Financial.
The Two Ton Transformation ran from September 7 to
December 5, and featured
dozens of free classes and
seminars dedicated to enhancing the lives of everyone in
the community such as Tai

Small Business and Understanding Diabetes. Participants had an initial ‘weigh
in,’ including calculation of

Insalaco, Evans win March primary
Waldron & Rizzi take May runoff
Apache Junction City Councilwoman Gail Evans held
her seat on the council and
was the top vote getter among
council candidates in the
March city primary election.
Evans was the only city council candidate to pull more
than 50% of the vote, and was
the only outright winner for a
four-year council seat in the
March primary.
Mayor John Insalaco was
reelected to a third two-year
term, running unopposed.
He received 97% of the vote.
Proposition 100, the “Home
Rule” option, was also a winner with 77.8% approval by
the voters.
Evans won 1,773 votes,
enough to claim victory in the
primary election with 51.8%
of the 3,418 ballots cast.
In a May general election
“runoff” City Councilman
David Waldron also retained
his seat on the council, pulling down the most votes in
the May election. Filling the
other seat, one left vacant
Mayor John Insalaco
by the departing Vice Mayor
Rick Dietz, was Christa Rizzi,
who was making her fourth
attempt since 2007 to win a
council seat.
Waldron and Rizzi finished
ahead of former Councilman
Clark Smithson and challenger Jeff Struble.
Apache Junction turned out
18.2% of registered voters
(2,800 ballots cast) and Waldron won 1,430 of their votes
(51%). Rizzi finished with
1,357 votes (48%). Smithson
tallied 1,254 (45%) and Struble finished with 1088 (39%).

Monsoon mayhem prevailed
for residents of Sun Valley Mobile Home Park near University
Dr., just west of Meridian on
Friday morning, July 19, 2013.
Torrents of muddy water filled a
wash running through the park
and spilled into the streets. The
messy aftermath kept park managers busy shoveling, sweeping
and hosing for hours.
The Friday rains served to fill
washes, soak the ground and
made the Sunday, July 21 midday storm that much worse.
A wall of water passed through
the Weavers Needle RV Park at
250 S. Tomahawk Rd. pushing
dumpsters aside and covering
the floors of storage sheds with
water and gooey mud.
To the north, in the area of
Lost Dutchman and Goldfield
Rd. the Apache Junction Fire
District (AJFD) responded to a
call for a water rescue.
At around 1:30 p.m., a Bronco
carrying Kris Stein and Steven
Hoelbl was stranded in a flooded wash and swept downstream
about 100 yards. The two 19
year-old men clung to a nearby
tree where the Bronco came to
rest. The two were surrounded
by extremely fast moving water that measured at least 50
yards wide.
The Apache Junction Fire
District Personnel directed the
helicopter to the location with
AJFD personnel downstream
in case the victims fell into the
water. Both victims were successfully rescued without any
injuries.
Another water rescue was
needed at 108 S. Tomahawk
Rd. A small pickup truck with
a 25 year-old female and a 19
year-old male was stranded
in swift water, but this time
they could be reached with the
AJFD ladder truck. They were
rescued without injury.
A third rescue on Sunday
occurred when a mother and
child, who were trapped in
their stalled car, were led to
safety with no injuries.
There were also reports of
three people trapped inside a
home surrounded by water
at 700 N. Chaparral. Cars and
pickups were photographed in
rushing water in the same vicinity. Scenes from the fooding
were shown on national news
programs.

in Phoenix, leaving tantalizing clues to the location of
his source of gold.

where he came from, the facts
regarding his life and death in
Phoenix, and just how the
clues he left behind have kindled a flame of interest that
has only grown over the years
into a mother lode of lore,
legend, and adventure.
Worst’s presentation has become one of the favorites over

Remains Identified
As Tempe Coed
Missing since June 15
Skeletal remains were found
Tuesday, August 6, 2013 in
Apache Junction that have
been positively identified as
missing 19 year old Tempe
student Adrienne Salinas.
Dan Kelly, a resident living
near Weekes Wash, followed
vultures and a strong odor and
found human legs in the wash
by his home. Kelly called the
Pinal County Sheriff’s Office
(PCSO) who referred the call
to the Apache Junction Police
Department (AJPD).
A search for more evidence
began immediately in the
wash with county cadaver
K-9 units. The same area was
recently flooded and there
was a lot of traffic brought
about by swift water rescues
and debris cleanup.
The Tempe Police Department worked with AJPD
and the FBI on an extensive
search of the area near Goldfield Rd. and Lost Dutchman
Blvd. They are treating the
investigation as a homicide.
According to the AJPD, the
area where the remains were
first located has been searched
several times since the recovery, but on Thursday, Aug. 15,
investigators from multiple
agencies began searching a
larger area, much of it consisting of rough terrain. Searchers
are looking for any evidence
that may be related to what
has already been found.
Adrienne Salinas’ body
was found Aug. 6, 2013.
Adrienne Salinas has been
missing since June 15, 2013.
Her car was found with two flat
tires, abandoned in Tempe. Her
cell phone records indicate that
she called a cab from a Tempe
mini-mart, but the cab driver
said she was not there when
he arrived. Both the cab driver
and Salinas’ boyfriend, who
she had argued with earlier at
a party, have been ruled out as
suspects in her disappearance.
There are no other suspects or
persons of interest at this time.

Kelly, the current acting chief
of police of the Apache Junction Police Department, was
welcomed with a standing
ovation when the Mayor and
City Council approved the
ratification of his appointment
to Chief of Police on Tuesday,
Sept. 17, 2013, during their
regular meeting.
Deputy Chief Kelly, 63, is
the first chief of police that the
City has appointed internally
in its 35-year history.
Kelly was appointed as acting chief in March, 2013 after
Jerald Monahan, the previous
chief, accepted the chief position with the Prescott Police
Department. Kelly also served
as acting chief during the
City’s search for a new police
chief in 2007.
Kelly has 41 years of law
enforcement experience. He
started his law enforcement
career with the Chicago Police Department in the early
70s. In 1984, he was accepted
into the U. S. Department of
Justice Drug Enforcement
Administration working in
various capacities and offices
around the world. He retired

Cause for rejoicing
The state of Arizona has a tax
on motor fuels and collects a
variety of fees and charges relating to the registration and
operation of motor vehicles
on the public highways of the
state. These collections are
deposited in the Arizona Highway User Revenue Fund
(HURF) and are then distributed to the cities, towns and
counties and to the State Highway Fund.
The HURF fund is the main
source of revenue to pay for
improvements and maintenance of roads, highways and
bridges, and the Arizona Legislature has seen fit to cut approximately $750 million in
HURF funds to those Arizona
cities, towns and counties for
more than a decade, since
2002. Those cuts, in turn,
forced cutbacks by local community leaders on roads and
streets that they maintain, putting our transportation infrastructure years behind its normal maintenance schedule.
Last week, Legislative leaders sent a letter to Governor
Jan Brewer asking her to restore $238 million to HURF
during fiscal years 2015 and
2016 and prioritize spending
for fiscal year 2015.

has suffered, the environment
has suffered and our state’s infrastructure has suffered.
As an official of one city told
me last week, “The Legislature may stop solving their
problems on the backs of municipalities. I guess if our expectations are low enough for
the Legislature, this is cause
for rejoicing.”

The trails of the Superstition
Wilderness Area have yielded
many interesting characters
during the past century. They
came here to search for lost
treasure or gold mines. These
individuals followed in the
footsteps of “Coronado’s
Children” according to Frank
J. Dobie, a noted western author. If anyone could be called
one of Coronado’s Children
the Whistler certainly was
such a man.
This obscure recluse wandered the deep canyons and
towering peaks of the Superstition Wilderness for more
than two decades. His search
for the Dutchman’s Lost
Mine began in 1939, and was
immediately interrupted by
World War II. The Whistler’s
first knowledge about the Lost
Dutchman Mine came from
Barry Storm’s book, On The
Trail of the Lost Dutchman.
The Tortilla Flat area served
as the Whistler’s base camp
from 1949-1951. In the years
following 1951, he prospected
an area around Willow Springs.
The Whistler walked from
First Water to Apache Junction
monthly to up pick his VA disability check and his monthly
supplies after 1951. He was
always whistling a tune.
The keen eyes of hikers and
prospectors rarely spotted the
whistler. They often heard
him, but didn’t see him. Even
the Barkley cowboys rarely
saw him.
He always wore dark clothing, even during the hot summer months. His dark clothing
was his trademark. It was
his whistling at night while
he walked that gave him his
nickname. His nocturnal habit
of hiking through the Superstitions at night during the
summer months caused other
prospectors to be suspicious
of him. Some claimed he was
a camp robber.

It was quite strange for
cowboys to be sitting around
a campfire and hear somebody
whistling a tune while walking in the distance. Many of
us believed the Whistler was
afraid of the dark and whistled
to vent his anxiety.
The Whistler spent much of
his time in the West Boulder
Canyon area. His camp was
located in the high rocks
above the canyon floor. He
chose this location for his
camp because of flash floods
and the occasional hiker wandering through the area. He
wanted a camp safe from
floodwaters and detection.
Dirtbags and ducks
When I read Robert Ryden’s Letter to the Editor (AJ News,
12/23/13), in which he expressed disappointment that a previous writer had called the Editor a “dirtbag,” I agreed that such
language was inappropriate. But then I read Mr. Barker’s editorial (Viewpoint & Opinion), which was right next to Mr.
Ryden’s letter. In his column, Mr. Barker maligned an entire
group of people when he wrote, “Modern conservatives... are
mainly just angry, anti-progressive, ill-informed cynics who
couldn’t pass a high school civics test. They suffer from a selfimposed, hyperbolic blindness and are people who love America in theory, but hate it in reality.” Earlier in that same column,
Mr. Barker called conservatives “bigots” and wrote that, “Understanding and explaining conservative policies and theory
requires acuity.” He then went on to suggest that, “... the stars
of Duck Dynasty would call themselves “conservatives” even
though they have no idea what acuity is.” Mr. Barker, perhaps
in his eagerness to bash conservatives in general and Phil Robertson (patriarch of the Duck Dynasty clan) in particular, went
too far in demeaning all conservatives and disparaging, simply
because he dislikes his politics, a former teacher with a Master’s Degree in education. Perhaps the bigot is Mr. Barker and
perhaps the term “dirtbag” is not far off the mark after all.

Editor’s note: Mr. Goldstein has made a mistake. The editorial
opinion he refers to did not call conservatives bigots. Rather, it
said, “Most people who call themselves conservatives aren’t
actually conservatives. Many are Libertarians. Some are just
bigots.” As for those who suffer from a self-imposed, hyperbolic blindness, a good example would be a provisional inability to distinguish between “some” and “all.”
Chinese Christmas
Enough about budget complaints blaming our national debt
on elected officials. “We the people” stand in line to buy from
China! This New Year we can make a decision to plan and
watch for USA products on sale or visit Antique shops for
bargains. This Christmas I decided not to purchase a 5 cup
coffee maker for reasons expressed when I couldn’t find a
coffee maker “Made in USA.”
Can we learn from a Christmas where China makes our
products and Santa gets the credit?

How ironic, I thought. Here
was a man who gave everything for his country in the time
of war and now was just trying

While rounding up cattle in
West Boulder Canyon in the
spring of 1959, we came across
the Whistler’s Camp by accident. We heard somebody with
a serious cough. When we rode
up the hillside to investigate
we found the Whistler flat on
his back with either the flu or
pneumonia. Barkley sent me
back to First Water and Apache
Junction to contact the Sheriff’s Office. The next day the
Whistler was taken out of the
mountains and admitted to the
Pinal County General Hospital, then transferred to the VA
hospital at Fort Whipple near
Prescott. The Whistler asked
us to look after his meager

This tale enlightened us about
those who we sometimes prematurely judge. Most of the
cowboys thought the Whistler
was a bum wasting time on a

Water Ranch and picked up
his camp from our tack shed.
He returned to the mountains
to search for his dream.
The only treasure the Whistler
found in the Superstition Mountains was probably peace and
solitude. He never found the
gold of Superstition Mountain,
but then again he may not have
been searching for it. I met
him only once, and to this day
I don’t recall exactly what he
looked like. Was the Whistler a
war hero? Or was he searching
for peace to ease his tired and
worn soul? He is now a forgotten man swallowed up by time.
He is nothing but a ghostly
face from the past that once
defended our nation, walked
the trails of the Superstition
Wilderness and followed in
the footsteps of Frank Dobie’s
Coronado’s Children. Ironically I have never forgotten
General Hap Arnold’s words,
“...never to be forgotten by this
grateful nation.”
Many lost souls have roamed
the Superstition Wilderness
over the decades searching
for gold. The Whistler was
just one of many searching for
peace and solitude. Many years
later Tim O’Grady told me that
“Hal,” the man I knew as “the
Whistler” was a highly decorated hero of World War II.
If you have time today tell a
veteran thanks for his sacrifice
that has insured us a free nation, you don’t have to wait for
a national holiday to do it.

accessed quicker and safer
using the UAV along with
searchers in the field, resulting in critical time savings.
Robert Cooper, director of
urban searches at SSAR, said
that the system can give accurate directions to help find
the person who is lost.

taken a spill in one of the outof-the-way canyons in the Superstition Mountains. You’ve
twisted your ankle and it’s
very painful to walk, let alone
climb out. Hours have gone
by when you hear the insistent sound of a swarm of insects and look up to see a hovering high-tech quad-copter.
Smile! You’re on camera,
and help is on the way. Superstition Search and Rescue
(SSAR), a local volunteer rescue group, has added a new
tool to help them in their efforts to locate and rescue lost
or injured hikers.
“Eagle 1,” SSAR’s Matrix
quad-copter, is an unmanned
aerial vehicle (UAV) they recently purchased and are now
putting through its paces to see
how best to use it. It consists
of a technologically-advanced
system that includes a gimbal
mounted video camera on a
remote controlled helicopter
along with a control unit and a
monitor that shows a live feed
from the copter. The UAV has
wireless connections to six

For the second
straight year, Prospector
wrestler
Marc Uehling (on
top of podium)
took first place in
his weight class
at the A.J. Invitational. Last year,
Uehling captured
the top spot in the
128-pound weight class. On January 12th of this year,
Uehling won the 134-pound class after a perfect 6-0
record in the tournament. Tack on three more wins on
Wednesday in dual matches against Shadow Mountain,
Cactus Shadows and Coolidge, and Uehling improved
to 18-1 on the season. Even more impressive is that
Uehling wrestled in the A.J. Invitational nursing a
shoulder injury.
A.J.H.S. Girls Go Pink
On January 22 of this year, the Lady Prospector basketball program hosted their annual Pink Game with
visiting Williams Field. AJHS players wore their pink
uniforms to show their support for cancer survivors as
well as www.myhopebag.org.

Men’s Marathon Record Set
Former Northern Arizona University All-American cross
country and track and field runner, Jordan Chipangama,
also a former Central Arizona College Junior National
Champion in the 1500 meters, won
this year’s Lost Dutchman Marathon
in record-setting time. Chipangama,
born in Lusaka, Zambia and now
living in Flagstaff, covered the 26.1mile LD Marathon on Sunday, February 17 in a time of 2:18.51, breaking
the previous record of 2:27.22 set
back in 2010 by Zachary Thomas of
Bagdad, Arizona.
For setting a new marathon record,
Chipangama also picked up a $500
cash prize for his efforts.
Apache Junction’s Sabine Krieger,
a local fitness trainer and massage Apache Junction’s
therapist, won the women’s 8K Sabine Krieger
race for the third consecutive year.
Krieger continues to improve on her overall time, running 37:50 in 2011, 33:56 in 2012, and 33:16 to win this
year’s race.
A total of 2,498 runners finished one of the four 12th
annual Lost Dutchman Marathon races on February 17,
down slightly from last year’s record number of 2,879
finishers. Those numbers do not include the 2-Mile Fun
Run/Walk, where another 244 participants were registered.

local youth groups and organizations at their annual
post-race banquet in March. That brings the total
amount of donations given back to the community in
excess of $375,000 in its twelve years. The 13th annual Lost Dutchman Marathon is already scheduled for

Fast-Pitch Team Win Tourney
A local youth fast-pitch softball team known as the East Valley Monsoon recently captured the Silver Bracket of a Triple Crown Tournament held April 12 and 13 at Big League
Dreams ballpark in San Diego.
The girls, all ages 12 years and younger, went 5-2 during the
tournament and beat a team called the San Diego Swagger 8-4
in the championship game.
This was the second tournament the EV Monsoon won. Earlier this year, they won a tournament in Phoenix to qualify for
the Triple Crown Tournament.

CCJH Wrestlers Three-Peat
Five junior high/middle school wrestling teams competed
in their conference tournament on May 10 at Apache Junction High School but the match of the tournament came
down to two Cactus Canyon Junior High 118-pounders, both
undefeated on the season.
Andrew Greyeagle and Pedro Medina worked their way
through opposite ends of the 118-pound bracket to meet
in the finals on Friday night and the much anticipated duel
lived up to its hype.
Tied 2-2 after one period, 4-4 after two, and 6-6 at the end
of the third period, Greyeagle and Medina went into overtime to settle their battle. Neither wrestler scored in the first
overtime period, so a second overtime ensued, this time with
Greyeagle winning a coin toss, choosing the “down position,” and needing only to pick up an escape point to win the
match. Greyeagle, instead, picked up a two-point reversal
and became one of five CCJH wrestlers on the night to capture their weight class title.
Medina, one of five more Cougar wrestlers to finish runnerup in their respective weight class, all scored valuable team
points during the competition, enough to give the Cactus
Canyon Cougars the team title at the tournament, the third
consecutive Desert Middle School Athletic League title for
the Cougars, and a head-to-head win over their arch rival,
Mountain Vista from Coolidge, a team who had beaten
CCJH twice during the regular season.

Hand Kata, and 3rd in Musical Kata. Patrick became World
Champion in Musical Weapons, World Champion in Weapons, World Champion in Open Hand Forms, 3rd in Continuous Sparring, 5th in Sparring, and 2nd place in his MMA debut competition. Ryan placed 2nd for his age group in Open
Hand Kata. Rheanna is World Champion for her age group in
Musical Weapons, World Champion in Musical Forms, 2nd

A journey that would take them all the way to the Canyon
Athletic Association 2A state championship game begins
on August 30 for the Apache Trail Wolfpack when they
squeeze out a 34-32 victory over Orme Academy in a
game played up in Mayer.
The Apache Trail Wolfpack would run the table during
the regular season with a perfect 7-0 record. They faced
Harvest Prep from Yuma in
the CAA 2A semifinal game
on November 2 at Phoenix
Christian High School and
prevailed 40-6 to set up a
second showdown with Orme Academy on November 9,
this one for the CAA 2A state title.
The championship game was a terrific one but for the
second year in a row, the ATHS Wolfpack, who captured
the CAA “Class B” state title in 2009, would come up
short as they fell to Orme Academy, 32-26.

Lady Prospectors Win Own Invitational
Sporting a perfect 7-0 record over two days, the Lady Prospector varsity volleyball team captured the top spot in their
own invitational tournament played September 20 and 21.
After going 4-0 in “pool play” matches on Friday, the AJHS
girls came back Saturday and defeated Shonto Prep 25-8,
25-11, downed Washington 25-16, 25-19, and then in the
championship game, knocked off Central 25-17, 25-14.
For the tournament, Apache Junction middle hitter Taylor
Gering was named to the All-Tournament team.

Superstition Mountain Rotary Club will be hosting a
unique challenge golf tournament on Saturday, January
11, 2014 on the Dinosaur Mountain Course at Gold Canyon Golf Resort. The format will be similar to the Ryder
Cup with Americans taking on Canadians in a 2-versus-2
setup with six holes of “best ball,” six holes of “alternate
shot,” and six holes of “scramble.” There will be a 10:30
a.m. shotgun start.
The cost to play is $120 per player and includes golf,

History-Making Cross Country Teams
Apache Junction High School’s cross country teams
made history this past week when both the boys and girls
teams qualified for the Division III state championships.
The last time a boys team qualified for state was back in
1992. The girls, as a team, have qualified just a few times
over the past 25 years.
Members of the AJHS boys qualifying team included
Omar Ewert, Nyck McCune, Dylan Kessler, Diego Castaneda, Jamie Zimmerman, Michael Blackstone and Juan
