The difference between just looking
and really seeing—that is the Central
Queens Y Early Childhood experience.
Nestled within the most culturally diverse
county in the United States, diversity is
highly valued as a part of our program.
Appearances can be mi sleading. We
want children to understand how
important it is not to make judgments
about people based only on what they
see. Our goal is to open their eyes to
a different way of looking at the world.
In keeping with our philosophy, we
embed special enrichment activities in
the program including swim instruction,
music with “Felt Songs,” Hebrew
language, gym instruction, arts & crafts,
an inter-generational reading program,
special holiday performances and dance.
Weekly Shabbat programming and
Jewish holidays are celebrated too!
Our Staff
Early Childhood staff are dynamic, caring,
experienced educators committed
to your child’s growth. We believe in
ongoing training for our teachers and
maintain the highest standards in Early

CHILDREN K-6 / DANCE PROGRAM
Our mission at the Central Queens YM & YWHA is to provide all our students
with quality dance training and education in any dance discipline. We believe
that dance is a form of human expression with endless possibilities, and is
essential in keeping our society healthy. It is a form of communication within and
across many different cultures. It is our goal to create a safe, warm, and loving
environment where every student can explore all aspects of dance: confidence,
creativity, musicality, rhythm, grace, coordination, an appreciation for the art, but
most of all, to have fun regardless of the level or time commitment.

**This is a 10 month program which is broken down into three semesters with a dress rehearsal and showcase in June.
Class schedule and teacher placement is subject to change.
Ballet: The foundation of all dance.
Body placement, and alignment in
ballet are the most important elements
for every dancer in attaining balance,
control, form, strength and a beautiful
line. Dancers will achieve this through
barre and center floor work.
Hip Hop: A fun, high energy, upbeat,
funky, freestyle dance form that has
evolved from break dancing, street
dancing, urban and jazz into one
of the most popular disciplines today.
Each dancer will learn to isolate different
muscles (pop and lock), followed by
easy-to-follow Hip Hop choreography.
Creative Movement: This dance
based class incorporates ballet,
modern and jazz techniques along
with your child’s imagination. Children
build confidence and increase body
awareness through movement that is
based on various themes.
10
Ballet/Tap & Ballet/Jazz Combo:
This class provides a half hour of tap
or jazz and a half hour of ballet. In tap,
students learn techniques where rhythm
is created with their toes and
heels. In Jazz students are taught
basic dance technique and terminology
with an emphasis on isolations and
encouragement of personal style.
Dance Dynamics: Young dancers will
have the opportunity to experience the
various disciplines of ballet, modern
and jazz dance with a contemporary
flair. Basic techniques and terminology
will be taught emphasizing expression,
grace and style.
Zumbatomic: A fun and healthy
program designed just for kids using
the Zumba® concept. Children learn
fitness dances, play fun motivational
games, and learn new rhythms
and styles of music and culture. All
classes are taught to not only cultivate
individuality and creativity, but to
develop leadership, respect, team work,
pride, confidence, and responsibility.
Breakdance: Open to all students without
any prior dance experience, this class
teaches core Breakdance moves, covering
categories such as toprock, downrock,
power moves and freeze. Every week,
the instructor will teach new techniques
by breaking down the movements,
running drills and apply the movements
into combinations and mini routines. No
prior dance experience necessary.

One Family’s Struggle to Help
Their Teenage Son Come to Terms
with his Sexuality
Sunday, May 19, 10 a.m to 12
Bagels & coffee included
$6 in advance, $9 at the door
In 2009, John Schwartz
got a call from his wife.
His thirteen year old son,
Joe, was on his way to
the hospital after a failed
suicide attempt. Joe
had finally mustered the
courage to come out as
gay to his classmates, who responded
with great discomfort. Hours later, he
tried to kill himself. Oddly Normal is a
personal story, written to help other
parents of gay kids — and maybe,
parents of any kid who is different,
who is mistreated by others, or who
just may not accept himself — to
know that they can find their own
way to help their child handle the pain
that comes from not fitting in. John
Schwartz is a national correspondent

Zumba Gold®
Israeli & International Dance
Zumba Gold takes the Zumba formula
and modifies moves and pacing to suit
the needs of active older participants, as
well as those just starting their journey to
a fit and healthy lifestyle. Enjoy the zesty
Latin music of salsa, merengue, cumbia
and reggaeton, exhilarating, easy-tofollow moves, and an invigorating, partylike atmosphere.
Israeli folk dance was originally introduced
as a way to create a new culture in an
old-new land, by combining elements from
other dance cultures with the music and
themes of modern Israel. Most dances
were created specifically as a way of
celebrating the spirit of the new country.
Join us as we celebrate Israel by learning
both traditional and modern folk dance!

ORDINARY
NAZIS AND THE
HOLOCAUST
Prof. Mary Fulbrook
Thurs., Mar. 28,
1:30 p.m.
Udo Klausa was an
ordinary Nazi functionary
who helped implement
the Nazi’s policies of extermination for
85,000 Jews on their way to slave labor or
the gas chambers. Despite inner conflicts,
Klausa considered himself throughout “a
decent man”. Klausa’s story is so typical
of countless local functionaries across
the Third Reich. Without the diligent
cooperation of these ordinary men, the
extermination of millions could never
have been realized. Fulbrook had known
the Klausa family all her life, but did not
know Udo’s story until a few years ago.
An award winning historian, Prof. Mary
Fulbrook teaches German history at
University College, London.

THE HANDS
OF WAR:
A TALE OF
ENDURANCE
AND HOPE
Marione Ingram
Mon., Apr. 8, 1:30 p.m.
Marione Ingram grew
up in Germany during World War II, the
daughter of a Jewish mother. In the
midst of deportations, she experienced
the firestorm bombings of Hamburg, the
deadliest aerial assault the world had ever
seen. Presumed dead in the firestorms,
she and her mother escaped the death
camps and survived in hiding, living with
constant fear and hunger. Immigrating to
the U.S. after the war, Ingram became
a civil rights activist, impelled by her
own experiences. During the 1960s she
worked on voter registration, opened a
Freedom School in Mississippi, which
was eventually torched by the Klu Klux
Klan. Today she is a writer and artist.
WOMEN IN
AFGHANISTAN,
WOMEN IN ISLAM
Naheed Braham
Mon., April 15, 1:30 p.m.
Naheed Braham, of NY
Women for Afghan Women,
will discuss the situation of women today
in Afghanistan and the role of women, historically, in Islam. Do the strictures of the
Taliban derive from Islam directly or from
the traditional culture of Afghanistan? She
will also discuss the work of Women for
Afghan Women in Afghanistan. Naheed’s
family left Afghanistan after her mother
was killed by a bomb in Kabul.
THE MEANING
OF LIFE
Prof. Raymond Belliotti
Mon., Apr. 22, 1:30 p.m.
Part of the human condition
is that the questions most important to us
- Why am I born to suffer and die? How
did it all begin and how will it end? - evade
answers and, instead, make us feel our
own limits. Yet, living a full life involves
struggling with the meaning of life. Belliotti
concludes that these questions are best
understood through two metaphors:
telescopes, and slinky toys. Distinguished
Prof. of Philosophy at SUNY Fredonia,
Belliotti is the recipient of the Chancellor’s
Award for Excellence in Teaching, and
is the author of 9 books, including The
Philosophy of Baseball.

THE JEWS OF
BUKHARA
Alanna Cooper
Mon., May 6, 1:30 p.m.
One of the most ancient
Mizrahi communities,
the Jews of Bukhara were intimately tied
to Central Asian culture. Author Alanna
Cooper tells the story of this community
in Bukhara and their struggle to adapt
yet preserve their own culture abroad.
Cooper’s new book makes clear the
tensions inherent in keeping Jews as one
people worldwide over the course of a
long and varied diaspora. Alanna Cooper
teaches at Boston University.
Jewish Life
and Culture
in Postwar
Germany
Prof. Roland Dollinger
Mon., May 13, 1:30 PM
Nearly seventy years after the Holocaust,
what is the nature of Jewish life in
Germany today? Professor Dollinger
will discuss the reemergence of Jewish
communities in the “country of the
perpetrators”, and anti-Semitism in
postwar Germany, looking at how
younger generations of Germans
understand their own past. Dr. Roland
Dollinger grew up in postwar Germany
and is Associate Professor of German at
Sarah Lawrence College.

to the public, is made possible through the support of the New
York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National

Koch: The Man, The Mayor,
The Movie!
Film Screening & discussion with
Filmmaker Neil Barsky
Mon., Apr. 29, 12:30 p.m.
Former Mayor Ed Koch was the quintessential New Yorker. Still brash,
charismatic, and hilariously blunt when he died at 88, Koch ruled New
York from 1978 to 1989, a down-and-dirty decade of grit, graffiti, near-bankruptcy and
rampant crime. Often controversial, Koch served three terms as mayor, including an
infamous 1980 transit strike; the burgeoning AIDS epidemic; and landmark housing
renewal initiatives. Through candid interviews and rare footage, Koch chronicles the
personal toll of running the world’s greatest city in a time of upheaval. “Here was a guy
who really represented the rough and tumble of New York. And he was just haunted
and damned by one helluva personality.” Rev. Calvin Butts

RECOVERING THE
LOST WORLD OF
EAST EUROPEAN
JEWS
Jonathan Brent
Mon., May 20, 1:30 p.m.
YIVO was founded in Poland in 1925 by
a visionary group of Jewish intellectuals,
including Albert Einstein and Sigmund
Freud, who understood the unique and
largely unrecognized impact of Yiddish
culture on European civilization and were
deeply concerned that the culture of East
European Jewry was undergoing radical
change in a rapidly modernizing world.
Communal activists and intellectuals
worked tirelessly to collect the records
of Jewish communities years before the
Holocaust. Now in NY, YIVO has been able
to recover much of the vast archive stolen
by the Nazis. We’ll discuss this remarkable
history, as well as the continuing influence
of Yiddish culture on other cultures to the
present day. Jonathan Brent is Executive
Director of YIVO.
THE TERRITORY
Film Screening & Discussion with
Filmmaker Dmitriy Khavin
Mon., Jun. 17, 1:00 p.m.
The Territory is an intimate look into the lives
of Soviet immigrants to Israel, who have
made their new home in the West Bank
settlements, today comprising about one
