Hamiota Leader June 2010
June 2010 by….Roger and Gail Pope Proud owners of Summerlove Shelties To compete in a National Specialty has always been a dream of mine. On April 28th ‘ The Boys ’ and I set off to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. On a quest to fulfill that dream, I had my three dogs; Rico, Walker, and Lucas entered in four (4) trials: Veterans Obed, Pre-Novice, Brace, and Rally. Attending a National and having one dog do well is something; but having four at the top of their class against some of the best competition in Canada, and some from the USA , is beyond my wildest dream. I keep looking at ‘ The Boys ’ in disbelief and when I see their ribbons and silver tray I know dreams come true….I guess hard work and perseverance does pay off !! Veterinary Clinic Day! Along with the best wishes there was a live demonstration of the Tele-Health service, which has saved many trips to Winnipeg. Over 200 attended the delicious Bar-B-Q with great door prizes….Thank You Health Centre !!!! Assiniboine North Parent Child Coalition (ANPCC) Family Learning Olympics Update & Teddy Bear Picnic………………...Shauna McTavish On April 29, ANPCC held a Family Learning Olympics at the Elementary School. There were 12 stations and families moved from one station to the next as they enjoyed family activities together. One station was an Olympic Cafe which provided the families with a free supper. We are happy to report that there were 11 families in attendance. The event could not have been successful without the community partners. I would like to thank the Hamiota Elementary School for the free space, the Hamiota Co-op, TJs convenience store, the Country Crocus Bakeshop for their donations, the Hamiota Leader newsletter for advertising the event and all the families. This event is also not possible without community volunteers and we were very fortunate to have several students donate their time to help out at the Family Learning Olympics. I would like to send out a huge thank-you to Jessica McNish, Shalyssa DeBin, Jessica Ritchie, Michalea Jay, X-Zeena Fleury, Caitlin McTavish and Cindy Yanyk our co-facilitator, and her daughter Sadie. These girls did such a great job at their stations with very little guidance. Hope to see you all next time! Our next community program is a Teddy Bear Picnic on July 20th 10:30am-1:00pm. The event will be at the Hamiota Fairgrounds at the Display building. The Teddy Bear Picnic is free for families focusing on parents and children ages 0-5. There will be a variety of stations for the families to visit with games, prizes and information. All children are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal to take along to the stations. If the teddy bear needs a check-up the EMS staff with the ambulance will look after it. The Kids Club will be there taking Nursery School registrations. We ask all families to bring your favourite picnic lunch. The goals of the Teddy Bear picnic are for parents/caregivers and young children to join in fun outdoor activities together, to raise safety awareness on a variety of topics for parents, and to familiarize families with the community support services. This is the first Teddy Bear Picnic in Hamiota and we are looking for partners in the community to support this great community event. If you are an individual, business, or service club that is interested in supporting the picnic by volunteering or making a donation for prizes, supplies or space, then please contact Shauna McTavish, Parent Child Coalition Coordinator at 764-4272, or smctavish@arha.ca. Three half ton truckloads of computers, printers, T.V.s and more were collected and taken to Shoal Lake. Their collection site will stay open until this fall. Call the recycling shed there at 759-3102 for hours of operation if you missed the depot and would like to drop off some eWaste. If there is demand, another local collection day may be set up in Hamiota in the fall. 35 barrels of crushed glass were loaded out last week and sent to BJC Services at Arrow River. 17,560 pounds of glass were diverted from the local landfill and will be used for sandblasting.
