AN AMERICAN TALE
UNITED NATIONS UP FOR PAROLE
They came from far and wide for the $750,000 GI
American Oaks, but the British expatriate Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) was the one with the
happy ending at Hollywood, bursting
clear in the stretch to defeat favored
Dance in the Mood (Jpn) (Sunday Silence). It was the first career Grade I
victory for trainer Jim Cassidy. “I’m
happy for Mr. Cassidy,” said winning
rider Kent Desormeaux, recently
elected to the Hall of Fame. “He
trained this filly to the minute, and
Ticker Tape Benoit Photo
she ran her eyeballs out.” The bay ran
third in Newbury’s Listed Radley S. Oct. 25 and sold for
100,000gns five days later at Tattersalls. Cont. p2
Request for Parole (Judge T C) had run into traffic in
each of his last three starts, but the five-year-old found
clear sailing at Monmouth yesterday as he rallied to take the
$750,000 GI United Nations S.
“He really had a great trip today,
and usually in races like this, the
horse with the best trip gets the
win,” said winning trainer Stanley
Hough. Favored Meteor Storm
Request for Parole
(GB) (Bigstone {Ire}) came up
Equi-Photo
empty in seventh. Cont. p2

PEACE RULES FIGHTS ON IN SUBURBAN
Peace Rules (Jules) displayed uncommon valor once
again yesterday, fighting his way
between rivals to prevail over
Newfoundland (Storm Cat) and
Funny Cide (Distorted Humor) in
a blanket finish in the GI Suburban H. at Belmont. “He was giving me everything, so I went to
Peace Rules
the large hand ride,” said winning
Adam Coglianese
jockey Jerry Bailey. “Peace Rules
has always been a fighter, very courageous.” Cont. p3
NO YIELDING FOR REFUSE TO BEND
There were doubts about the ground and the trip, but
there were none about the attitude of the aptly named
Refuse to Bend (Ire) (Sadler’s
Wells) as the 15-2 chance withstood a late run from Warrsan
(Ire) (Caerleon) to give Godolphin
their fourth G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown yesterday. Last year’s G1
2000 Guineas winner had spent a
long time in the doldrums before

Julian Herbert/Getty Images reem erging as a major force his
victory in the G1 Queen Anne S.
over a mile at Royal Ascot. “The Queen Anne was the
making of him,” commented Frankie Dettori. “I was a
bit worried when Warrsan came to him, but he came
here on a big high and ran to the line.” Cont. p3

ON PARADE Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB})
acclimated quickly to the firm courses of Southern
California, running second to Mambo Slew
(Kingmambo) in the GIII Miesque S. Nov. 28 and in the
Blue Norther S. Jan. 14. She then posted a pair of
stakes victories, defeating Mambo Slew and Amorama
(Fr) (Sri Pekan) in the China Doll S. Mar. 18 and capturing the Providencia S. Apr. 11. Ticker Tape couldn’t
wear down Miss Vegas (Ire)--winner yesterday of the
Flawlessly S.--in the GIII Senorita S. May 15, and ran
into traffic when fourth, beaten 1 3/4 lengths at evenmoney, to Lovely Rafaela (A.P. Indy) and Western
Hemisphere (General Meeting) in the GII Honeymoon
Breeders’ Cup H. June 5, while giving seven pounds to
each of those fillies. Those two losses saw her go
postward at 12-1 in this rich contest, but Kent
Desormeaux rode her with confidence. Western Hemisphere bowled along on the front end through fractions
of :49.18 and 1:14.10, with 7-5 Dance in the Mood
(Jpn) (Sunday Silence) fighting for her head on the rail
in second and Ticker Tape settling into a stalking
fourth. The bay moved up heading into the far turn and
kept the favorite boxed in before being asked for more
in the stretch, and wound up defeating her by a length.
“She settled in behind the Japanese horse and it looked
like the rider [Yutaka Take] had a lot of horse,” said
Desormeaux. “So I just tried to stay alongside as long
as I could. Once we cornered for home, I just went for
broke. I was just trying to steal off while she [Dance in
the Mood] was trapped behind horses.” The latter,
heroine of the Japanese 1000 Guineas, finished well
once in the clear. “The outside horse [Ticker Tape] had
me covered up and I couldn’t move,” explained Take. “I
had to wait for at least 100 meters.” Owner/breeder
Teruya Yoshida was on hand for the race, but felt a
different scenario would have seen him in the winner’s
circle. “I’m not happy with the result, but this happens
in racing,” he said. “The ground is okay, the distance is
okay, but the pace was not good to her. The jockey
should have seen that.”

Last summer, jockey Edgar Prado came to town and
guided Peace Rules to victory in GI Haskell Invitational
H. Making his first trip to Monmouth Park since that
win, Prado picked up another Grade I stakes score with
Request for Parole. The dark bay was com ing off a
troubled fifth-place finish in the GI Manhattan H. at
Belmont June 5. Tucked in at the hedge as 2003 U.N.
winner Balto Star (Glitterman) cut out moderate fractions, the five-year-old angled outside as they raced out
of the turn and kicked for home. He took over inside
the eighth pole and held off Irish-bred Mr O’Brien to
earn his first Grade I success and push his earnings
over the $1-million mark. “He broke beautifully and I
had him right behind the speed,” Prado said. “I wanted
to put him right there, because I saw that in the past,
when he was further back, he got into trouble. At the
five-sixteenths pole, I got a little worried because the
leaders got away from him. I didn’t know if he’d have
the acceleration to catch them, but he just kept coming
and coming.” It has not yet been decided where the
winner will run next. Click for the brisnet.com

Peace Rules made an inauspicious debut this year
when fourth at even-money to Southern Image in the
Sunshine Millions Classic Jan. 24, but made up for that
with a pair of battling victories in his next two starts.
The gritty chestnut was the valiant hero of the GII New
Orleans H. Feb. 29 and the GII Oaklawn H. Apr. 3,
earning respective Beyer Speed Figures of 113 and
112. He didn’t race again until the GI Stephen Foster H.
June 12, but looked like a shadow of his old self on the
sloppy going, fading to fourth after setting an uncontested pace. He bounced out of the gate and clipped off
quick fractions over the lively Belmont surface. Funny
Cide, chasing along the rail, headed him after threequarters in 1:09.33; the pair hit the mile in 1:33.93,
and it looked as though that might be it for Peace
Rules. But when jockey Jerry Bailey went to a hand ride
and Newfoundland surged up on his outside, the fouryear-old dug in deep and got to the wire first in a tight
finish. “He ran a great race,” said winning trainer Bobby
Frankel. “Like Jerry said, he doesn’t know if it was
because he put the stick away or the horse coming
upside of him that made him come again.” Frankel
indicated that Peace Rules would run next in the GI
Whitney H. at Saratoga Aug. 7.

Refuse to Bend confirmed his renaissance with a
game display here, stalking the early pace before committing at the quarter pole and holding the late flourish
of Warrsan to score narrowly. “I knew he would stay
and the boss had said ‘be aggressive’ and it paid off,”
said winning jockey Frankie Dettori. The four-year-old
landed his second Group 1 when taking the 2000 Guineas last May, but failed to make the frame in three of
his next four starts, disappointing when down the field
in the G1 Epsom Derby, G1 Prix du Moulin de
Longchamp and GI Breeders’ Cup Mile. Switched from
the yard of Dermot Weld to his new connections, the
bay finished eighth in both the G1 Dubai Duty Free at
Nad al Sheba M ar. 27 and G1 Lockinge S. at New bury
May 15, but bounced back to beat Soviet Song (Ire) in
the G1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. “He was bought as
a stallion prospect and he will retire at the end of the
year,” said racing manager Simon Crisford, before revealing that Refuse to Bend could drop back to a mile
for the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville Aug. 15.
Gary Tanaka’s 13-8 favorite Rakti (GB) (Polish Precedent) dwelt at the start and lost ground before racing
keenly and fading tamely inside the final quarter.
Jockey Philip Robinson reported that he “hated the
ground,” and that “he is a lot better on faster.”

third behind Speightstown. Pohave settled several
lengths from the front through an opening quarter of
:21 4/5, but began to move up on the turn and set sail

valiantly before the favorite finally asserted himself

Quantum Merit, five times a winner over the Belmont
turf course, proved that he doesn’t need to take his
racetrack with him, rallying from off the pace to give
trainer Del Carroll his second straight win in this holiday
weekend event. A 3 3/4-length winner of the Ashley T.
Cole S. for state-breds Sept. 12, the dark bay failed to
handle a yielding Belmont turf and was a distant eighth
in the Mohaw k H. Oct. 18, but bounced back to register a 2 1/2-length victory in the Cormorant S. at Aqueduct Nov. 9. Rested off that effort, the gelding returned
to wire open com pany in a one-mile Belmont optional
claimer May 9 and held on for a nose victory in the
Kingston H. over nine panels May 23. Well placed in
third for the opening six furlongs, Quantum Merit was
shifted out five wide for the drive and stormed home an
easy winner. Senor Swinger finished well and crossed
the line second, but was taken down for drifting out
and interfering with favored Perfect Soul at the eighth
pole. Click for the brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree

when second in the GIII WinStar Distaff H. over the
same course May 31. Never far from the front, the
granddaughter of Danzig angled out turning for home
and quickened nicely while opening up daylight. Though
she began to idle slightly, there was never a serious
danger from favored Katdogawn down the lane. “She
kind of sprinted on past the leader, then said, ‘Okay,
I’m done,’” said winning rider Kent Desormeaux. “The
only encouragement I really had to give her was just to
keep extending her legs the last 115 yards, and she did
just that.” Click for the brisnet.com chart.

He Loves Me paired up allow ance victories at Fair

before faltering to sixth in the Tiffany Lass S. Jan. 25
on the main track at the New Orleans oval. The bay
returned to her Maryland base to annex the Wide Country S. at Laurel Mar. 6 and the Caesar’s Wish S. at
Pimlico Apr. 24, but came up short on the turf in the
Hilltop S. May 8, a contest won by GI American Oaks
hopeful Western Ransom. She rebounded with a victory
in the off-the-turf Pearl Necklace S. at Pimlico May 31
and was the second choice on this road trip. Allowed to
settle into stride as a ground-saving fifth, the Marylandbred ranged up four-wide on the far turn and set her
sights on pacesetter Prospective Saint. That filly
ducked in at the top of the stretch and He Loves Me
outgutted her in the final sixteenth. “It’s a long ways to

“We didn't come in a plane--we came in a truck.”

Tern (GB) when Pongee bested her rivals. A homebred
from his Fittocks Stud, Pongee improved steadily
throughout her sophomore campaign, taking four minor
contests before disappointing when seventh in the
Listed Galtres S. at York in August. After a third on her
return in a Salisbury handicap May 13, she registered
her first stakes score in the Listed Pinnacle S. at
Haydock May 22. Reserved towards the rear off the
fast early fractions in this contest, she was struggling
to lay up in the back straight, but gradually responded
to driving and closed the gap inside the final half mile.
As Sahool won the war of attrition passing the eighth
pole, it was Pongee who delivered the strongest run
and the runner-up had no answer as she asserted in the
final 75 yards. “They went a real good gallop and coming to the two they were starting to die,” explained
jockey Jimmy Fortune. “My filly is very tough and never
gives up and I can see her getting a bit further.”

Orientor has shown his best form on soft ground and
the rain came just in time as he made a belated return
to the winner’s spot here. He only registered one success last term, but that came in a competitive renewal
of the G3 Chipchase S. at Newmarket 12 months ago.
He was dropped to five furlongs in Sunday’s Listed
Richard H. Fraught Memorial S. at The Curragh and
there was no disgrace in his third placing there on unsuitably fast ground. Away well, he settled in mid-division off the breakneck early pace, made smooth progress passing halfway and quickened to hit the front
with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining before asserting under a
drive. “I was fairly confident that the trip wasn’t going
to be a problem,” commented conditioner Jim Goldie.
“He has been firing the stalls recently so it was the
simplest thing to do to drop back to five. He could go
for the G1 Nunthorpe S. [at York Aug. 19] and the G1
Prix de l’Abbaye [at Longchamp Oct. 3] is the end-ofseason target.”

ever-growing haul. He had proven himself on an international stage last term when w inning the G3 Prix de la
Porte Maillot at Longchamp in June for his Dutch connections, but has progressed with each run since joining Andreas Trybuhl at the turn of the year. After taking the Listed Sprintpreis at Cologne on his seasonal
bow M ay 2, he blitzed his rivals in the G3 BenazetRennen at Baden-Baden last time May 28. Held up in
rear throughout the early stages of this contest run on
heavy ground, he made smooth progress before being
asked to quicken inside the final quarter. He delivered a
strong challenge to join Fiepes Shuffle with 150 yards
remaining and his momentum carried him past that
game rival in the closing stages and on to a cosy score.

two colts this time headed by Andrasch Starke’s choice
Fight Club. After beating subsequent G2 M ehl-MulhensRennen (German 2000 Guineas) runner-up Lazio (Ger) in
the Listed Preis der Dreijahrigen at Dusseldorf Apr. 25,
he followed up in the G3 Bavarian Classic at Munich
May 31, a prep used by Schutz as a stepping stone for
the 2000 Derby hero Samum (Ger). In terms of winning
the best trial, Malinas holds all the aces, having beaten
Omikron and Shirocco in the G2 Oppenheim-UnionRennen at Cologne June 13. Peter Schiergen has a
powerful hand of four here, including El Tiger, who beat
Malinas previously in the Listed Grosser Preis der
Sparkasse Dortmund May 20, and the sole filly
Saldentigerin. She suffered what was considered to be
a shock defeat at the hands of Amarette (Ger) in the G3
Schwarzgold-Rennen in Cologne May 16, but that
thinking w as undone when she could only finish third
behind that rival in the G1 Preis der Diana (German

Andre Fabre has built his reputation by farming
France’s top-level contests, and victory for Juddmonte
Farms’ Polish Summer would take his tally in this race
to an enviable six. Ripening at the age of seven, he
delivered a potent turn of acceleration to beat Bright
Sky (Ire) by a short head in the G3 Prix Exbury over 10
furlongs at this track Mar. 6, before beating Hard Buck
(Brz) by a half length in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at
Nad al Sheba Mar. 27, instantly binding the retainer
with Gary Stevens. He appeared a likely candidate to
provide that high-profile arrangement with its first domestic Group 1 success in the Prix Ganay at
Longchamp May 2, but he disappointed when a sub-par
fifth. Freshened by a break in the interim, he can attempt to make it third time lucky this afternoon, in the
race in which he has found only Ange Gabriel (Fr) too
strong in the last two renewals. Elie Lellouche saddles a
formidable duo in Policy Maker and Westerner, aided by
their pacemaker Poussin. While the former has proven
his effectiveness at this trip when winning the G2
Grand Prix de Chantilly last time June 13, Westerner
drops back from extended distances over which he has
made his reputation. Of more concern to connections
will be drying ground, as has to bounce back from
finishing a gallant 1 1/2-length second to Papineau (GB)
on even faster ground than this in the G1 Ascot Gold
Cup June 17. Gamut had subsequent G3 Ormonde S.
scorer Systematic (GB) and G1 Coronation Cup winner
Warrsan (Ire) behind when winning the G2 Jockey Club
S. at Newmarket May 2 and rates a serious threat. That
also applies to last year’s GI Canadian International hero
Phoenix Reach, who performed with credit when sixth
on his reappearance over an inadequate 10 furlongs in
the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot last time
June 16.

On the board in 17 of her 22 career starts, millionaire
Bare Necessities has won six stakes races at five different racetracks and looks to add a sixth venue to her
resume here. The gray opened 2004 with a win in the
Paseana H. at Santa Anita in January and picked up
checks in her next two starts against Grade I company
on the Southern California circuit. After running second
in the GIII Sixty Sails H. at Hawthorne in April, she was
moved to the barn of trainer Frank Kirby, who broke the
mare as a yearling. “Wally Dollase has trained her from
the beginning and he has done a fantastic job with
her,” Kirby said. “The owners weren’t looking to
change trainers, but her next few races are all in this
part of the country and they would have had to fly her
a lot, so they shipped her to me at Arlington.” Bare
Necessities was second in her first start under new
management, the GII Fleur de Lis H. at Churchill Downs
June 12. Smok’n Frolic, three-for-five at a mile and an
eighth, posted a 6 1/2-length score in the M ar. 14 GIII
Next Move H. The five-year-old came back to be second in the Apr. 17 GIII Bed o’Roses Breeders’ Cup H.
and was the runner-up again in her latest, finishing nine
lengths behind Bear Fan in the June 5 GII Vagrancy H.

Ghostzapper returns to action for the first time since
posting an eye-catching victory in the GI Vosburgh S.
Sept. 27 over this surface. The bay lost some time due
to foot ailments, but has been training well in recent
weeks. “He had a quarter crack that turned into an
abscess,” explained trainer Bobby Frankel. “He’s been
ready for a few weeks now. I would have loved to run
him in the Met Mile, but he wasn’t ready.” Ghostzapper
will have to overcome the talented Lion Tamer, who is
a perfect four-for-four at seven furlongs. The slightly
made chestnut rattled off victories in the GII Richter
Scale Breeders’ Cup H. Mar. 6 and GII Comm onwealth
Breeders’ Cup H. Apr. 10 before finishing fifth as the
favorite in the one-mile GIII Westchester H. May 5.
Trainer Todd Pletcher attributed that loss to shipping
problems from Kentucky. “What was supposed to be a
four-hour trip turned into a 14-hour trip,” he said. “We
thought he was training well the couple of days he was
here [before the race],” but in retrospect that might not
have been the best set-up for him.” The four-year-old
drilled five-eighths in :59 3/5 June 20.

Bayamo returned from an 11-month layoff to win a

pacesetter Sabiango (Ger) in the GI Charles
Whittingham H. June 12, settling for a 3/4-length second in that 10-furlong contest. “A week after the

horse.” Sarafan has bankrolled over $2.4 million in an

NEWS TODAY P
EXCEL ON TRACK FOR JULY CUP Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Exceed and Excel
(Aus) (Danehill) looks set to contest Thursday’s
£250,000 G1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket, which
attracted an entry of 30 at yesterday's five-day stage.
The Tim Martin-trained four-year-old was forced to miss
the G1 Golden Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot due to imperfect bloodwork, but has pleased connections with his
subsequent progress and satisfied in his exercise on
Friday morning. Sheikh Moham med's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson told the Racing Post, “He did a piece
of work on the Al Bahathri and worked nicely. Provided
everything continues as it is, it will be all systems go
for Thursday.” Aidan O’Brien also revealed that the G1
St James’s Palace S. third Antonius Pius (Danzig) is a
“possible” for the six-furlong contest. The race has
attracted a strong international contingent that includes
the G2 King’s Stand S. and G1 Golden Jubilee S. placegetter Cape of Good Hope (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) and
Seeking the Dia (Storm Cat), from the Hideyuki Mori
barn responsible for the 2000 hero Agnes World.
Among the domestically trained entries are G1 Prix de
l’Abbaye winner Patavellian (Ire) (Machiavellian) and
Golden Jubilee hero Fayr Jag (Ire) (Fayruz {GB}). With
the field limited to 20, there could be an elimination
process at Tuesday’s 48-hour declaration stage. “This
is what we were hoping for in the Darley July Cup this
year--the most competitive and most international sprint
ever run in Europe, possibly even the world,” Clerk of
the Course Michael Prosser said.
CALLER ONE TO RETURN? Unraced since winning
the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Nad al Sheba in March
of 2002, seven-year-old Caller
One (Phone Trick) will reportedly make a return to the
races in the $50,000 Rocket
Man S. at Calder July 10. The

two years at Calder yesterday,

when he fractured a sesamoid in his right front leg. The
injury appeared to be career-ending, but Caller One
arrived at trainer Laura Posada’s barn about 10 days
ago and is being pointed for a comeback in the twofurlong Rocket Man. Named the Highweight Older
Horse in UAE after winning the Golden Shaheen in
2001, the gelding made it two in a row in the $2 million event in ‘02. He also won six stakes in the U.S.
and went to the sidelines with 10 wins from 20 starts
and earnings of $3,184,500.

BALD TRUTH ABOUT VALENZUELA Jockey Pat
Valenzuela, who returned from a 30-day ban Thursday,
was suspended by the Hollywood Park stewards Friday.
The 41-year-old rider received his latest
suspension because he did not adhere to
the terms of his conditional license,
which require that he provide a hair
sample for drug testing. Valenzuela was
unable to supply the sample because he
had shaved his head, chest, armpits and
pubic hair. He did pass a urine test, but
the testing of hair follicles is considered
Pat Valenzuela
more precise. Valenzuela, who has a

history of drug problem s, was originally
suspended after failing to appear for a
drug test in January. The stewards wanted to sit him
down for the remainder of 2004, but the California
Horse Racing Board reduced the judgement to four
months, and gave him credit for the three months he
was off before his May 18 hearing. Valenzuela was
suspended for the month of June and ordered to participate in a rehab program. It was also decided that, upon
his return, he would be subject to the more comprehensive hair follicle screening. The rider’s failure comply
was considered tantamount to a drug positive, and
resulted in his latest suspension.

The overwhelming choice to take this one, she sat right

Canadian Frontier took his first two starts this season, winning a pair of allowance races at Gulfstream

Apr. 11 Yankee Affair S. at the Florida oval. The bay
was let go at 20-1 when returned to the main track for

the crowd with a 3 3/4-length score. He had trouble
handling the company in the June 5 GII True North

facing a softer field here. Always prominent, he took
over after a half in :44.84, opened up daylight at

Iwinski to Disperse Stable:
Successful East Coast trainer Allen Iwinski, who has
horses stabled at Delaware Park, Monmouth Park and
Belmont Park, will begin dispersing his horses because
of an ongoing health problem, the Daily Racing Form
reports. Iwinski, 52, has been battling hepatitis C for
eight years. “I need to undergo treatments to build up
my immune system,” Iwinski told DRF. “And I want to
spend more time with my fam ily, who I have neglected.” The dispersal is expected to take about a
year. Iwinski will relocate to Ocala while he is sidelined,
but hopes to return to training. “When I do come back,
it will be such smaller, with all the horses in one location,” he continued. A native of Detroit, Iwinski took
out his license in 1975 and has since won m ore than
1,500 races and taken training titles at Philadelphia
Park and Delaware Park.

Sam Son Farm’s undefeated Eye of the Sphynx

Twelve months ago, Persian Punch (Ire) thrilled the
Sandown crowds by winning this contest, and Romany
Prince carried the same silks to a hard-fought success
this time in a poignant tribute to that gallant warrior.
Although not in the same league as his ill-fated stable

over staying trips, having finished third in the 22-furlong Queen Alexandra S. at Royal Ascot June 19. Settled in last place early, he made steady progress widest

home at the three-furlong marker. Tackled by Silver Gilt

Frankie Dettori throughout the early stages, the 20-1
outsider was threaded through the pack inside the final
