he Graveyard of Champions had nothing on the
champ that took to the track July 24.
Fox Hill Farms' undefeated Songbird, as if she
wanted to toy with onlookers and viewers across the
nation to build the drama, took Carina Mia's best
shot during the final turn in the $500,000 Coaching
Club American Oaks (gr. I) and the challenger moved
onto even terms turning for home, but the indefatigable daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was still able to
win in her signature fashion.
From the three-sixteenths pole to the wire at
Saratoga Race Course, Carina Mia was no match
despite her best efforts, and Songbird went on to win
by open lengths yet again.
"I asked her more than I've ever had to," said jockey Mike Smith, who gave Songbird three strikes with
the whip early in the stretch, but only had to show
the whip to the filly once she put Carina Mia away.
"I take my hat off to Carina Mia. She made her run a
little bit. But once I got going, I was comfortable.
"This is a tough place to just step into town—especially when you're coming from the West Coast.

The humidity factor is what it is. The air is so much
thicker here. It gets to me as a rider, so I can't imagine a horse."
The Jerry Hollendorfer-trained 2-year-old champion filly of 2015 went right to the front from post
1, with Carina Mia applying pressure throughout,
and set fractions of :23.86, :47.52, and 1:11.63
through six furlongs. She absorbed the challenge
in the turn and into the stretch, then finished off
the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.56.
"We thought we were going to get tested and
we thought (jockey) Julien (Leparoux) would send
(Carina Mia) at us early, which he did," Hollendorfer said. "We got a chance to test our filly and she
dug in."
The margin of victory was 5 1/4 lengths. Carina
Mia finished four lengths clear of Flora Dora, who
was followed by Mo d'Amour and Weep No More.
"At the quarter pole I thought that I might win
the race, but I was second best today," Leparoux
said. "At that one point, I thought I got her but
(Songbird) switched on again. Songbird is a champion. Champions are supposed to do that."
Carina Mia's trainer, Bill Mott, shared his rider's
sentiment.
"I don't think it's any disgrace or embarrassment to run second to Songbird," Mott said. "We
tried her and we had our chance, and we have no
excuse."
Songbird has a perfect record from nine starts,
with five grade I victories and earnings exceeding
$2.4 million. BH

California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza return to the winner's circle after the San Diego Handicap
CALIFORNIA CHROME RETURNS TO LOS AL
By Jeremy Balan
"
Congratulations, Mr. Sherman!" one exercise rider
yelled out. "You're a legend, Mr. Sherman!" announced a pony rider. "Atta boy, Art," a jockey agent
said as he walked by.
Walking around the Del Mar barn area July 24,
seemingly everyone who got within earshot of trainer
Art Sherman wanted to express their appreciation for
what they experienced the day before, when California
Chrome and Dortmund did battle in the stretch during
the San Diego Handicap (gr. II).
"That was a nice prep, right?" Sherman said jokingly
of the head-and-head stretch duel that ended up just
0.84 seconds off the Del Mar track record for 1 1/16
miles.
What Sherman was most impressed with Sunday
morning was how his star chestnut came out of his
hard-earned, half-length victory.
"Chrome looked good this morning," the trainer
said. "I was really happy with the way he recovered. I
thought he'd be dead in the water after that trip. I was
amazed by his vitality this morning."
Chrome took an early van ride north to his Los
Alamitos Race Course base Sunday, departing Del Mar
at 8 a.m. PDT.

"He told me he was homesick," Sherman said with
a laugh.
The plan for now is to give the 2014 Horse of the
Year a couple breezes at Los Al before shipping back
to Del Mar about a week before the TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I), a race that should include Dortmund and
defending winner Beholder.
"We'll get a couple easy drills into him," Sherman
said. "Now that we've got this prep into him, both (he
and Dortmund) will come back to the Pacific Classic as
better horses. It's going to be a hell of a race. You put
these horses in with Beholder—that's some kind of
group."
Sherman opted to train up to the Pacific Classic at
Los Al after observing how California Chrome behaved
leading into the San Diego. At Del Mar, the 5-year-old
chestnut gets a bit worked up, which is all right a few
days leading into a race, but not something Sherman
wants to deal with for almost a full month. At Los Al,
he's noticeably more relaxed.
"With all the hustle and the bustle, and everybody
wanting to come by all the time, I think for him—with
all the action around here—he gets so stirred up,"
Sherman said. "It's just too much action for him. He
doesn't fret or anything, but walking past some of
these pens—he's a stud horse and gets keyed up" BH

Hard Aces and jockey Santiago Gonzalez win the Cougar II Handicap
HARD ACES GRINDS OUT WIN IN COUGAR II
By Myra Lewyn
H
ronis Racing's Hard Aces took control at the start
and repelled a stern challenge from Quick Casablanca around the final turn to win the $100,000
Cougar II Handicap (gr. III) July 24 at Del Mar.
The stout-hearted son of Hard Spun won by a
half-length from determined Quick Casablanca and
finished off 1 1/2 miles in 2:30.55 on a fast track to
snap a nine-race winless stretch dating back to his
victory in the 2015 Gold Cup at Santa Anita (gr. I).
Quick Casablanca, victor in the 2016 San Juan Capistrano (gr. IIIT), chased the winner for much of the
trip and got his head in front briefly during the last
of three turns. Hard Aces knuckled down for jockey
Santiago Gonzalez and led into the stretch by a halflength, gamely holding that opponent off to win.

and 1:16 for six furlongs and was timed in 1:41.99 for
a mile, while Quick Casablanca pressed a head back.
Though a willing rival, Quick Casablanca gave way
when Hard Aces was given his cue.
The 2-5 favorite, Hard Aces paid $2.80 and $2.10.
Quick Casablanca returned $2.80 and completed a
$2.60 exacta. There was no show wagering because
of the four-horse field. Seve's Road finished third.
Trained by John Sadler, Hard Aces finished on the
board in three of his previous four starts, including
his third in this year's edition of the Gold Cup June 25
last time out. Sunday's win puts his lifetime record at
7-5-8 from 33 starts, including a runner-up finish in
the grade I Santa Anita Handicap in March.
Hard Aces was bred in Kentucky by Dreamchaser
Thorobreds. His dam is the Quiet American mare All
in With Aces.
Energia Fribby came in fourth to complete the
order of finish. Hoppertunity and Infobedad were
scratched. BH

ugust Dawn Farm's Hit It Once More netted his
first stakes victory in the $164,150 New York Derby July 23 at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, giving
his sire Hard Spun his 50th black-type winner.
Trained by Gary Sciacca and ridden by Kendrick
Carmouche, Hit It Once More grabbed the early lead
in a field of eight in the 1 1/16-mile event for New
York-bred 3-year-olds and won by 6 1/2 lengths over
Extinct Charm in 1:43.02 on a track rated fast. The
colt, bred by JMJ Racing Stables out of the Sunday
Break mare Sunday Geisha, won for the third time in
nine starts.
Hit It Once More was a $90,000 purchase at the
Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale.
Hard Spun, who won the 2007 King's Bishop
Stakes (gr. I) and finished second to Horse of the
Year Curlin in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), stands
at Darley in Kentucky and had a 2016 fee of $45,000.
Also at Finger Lakes July 23, Matthew Schera's
Super Allison, by Super Saver, won the $75,000 New
York Oaks for state-bred 3-year-old fillies. It was the
first stakes win for Super Allison, who won by a neck
over Mekes Madalyn in 1:46.79 for 1 1/16 miles under John Davila for trainer Carlos Martin.
Super Allison, a $230,000 buy at the Fasig-Tipton
Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale, is out of the
Wildcat Heir mare Richiegirlgonewild and was bred
by Doug Branham and Felicia Branham. BH

RACHEL'S VALENTINA RETIRED SOUND
By Blood-Horse Staff
tonestreet Stables' homebred filly Rachel's Valentina, who is out of Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, has been retired, Stonestreet announced via its
website July 24.
No reason was given, but Stonestreet said the
3-year-old by Bernardini "will now retire from racing,
sound and injury-free."
Rachel's Valentina, trained by Todd Pletcher, won
her debut at Saratoga Race Course last summer and
followed up with a victory in the Spinaway Stakes (gr. I)
at the New York track. She then raced in the 14 Hands
Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) and finished
second, 5 3/4 lengths behind 2-year-old filly champion
Songbird, who remains undefeated in nine starts.
This year Rachel's Valentina finished second, beaten a neck by Weep No More and a head in front of
eventual Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Cathryn
Sophia, in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I). She
was favored in her next two starts but finished sixth
in the Kentucky Oaks and fifth in the Mother Goose
Stakes (gr. I).
Rachel's Valentina retires with $738,800 in earnings
and a record of two wins and two seconds from six
starts. Rachel Alexandra, raced for most of her career
by Stonestreet, will be inducted into the Racing Hall of
Fame in August. BH

BEHOLDER SIZZLES ON CALIFORNIA TRACK
By Jeremy Balan
H
COURTESY OF GARY TASICH
all of Fame jockey Gary Stevens wasn't aboard
to work Spendthrift Farm's Beholder during her
last drill in preparation for the $300,000 Clement L.
Hirsch Stakes (gr. I), but he was in the grandstand
to watch the bay mare as she breezed through five
furlongs in a brilliant :59 1/5 at Del Mar.
After a walk back to the barn with trainer Richard
Mandella, Stevens looked up at exercise rider Janeen
Painter and smiled.
"You have fun?" Stevens asked.
"You know it's fun," Painter quipped, squinting her
eyes at the jockey with feigned annoyance.
The feeling at the Mandella barn was rightfully
blissful immediately after the breeze by the daughter
of Henny Hughes. Beginning at the half-mile pole, a
few lengths behind a workmate, Beholder coasted by
her stablemate on the turn and opened up three to
four lengths at the wire. She worked past the wire to
earn her official clocking, but Mandella had her even
quicker on his stopwatch, at :58 3/5.
All that came with context. Visually, the three-time
champion seemingly could not have done it any easier.
"When she was actually doing it, I thought, 'Geez,
they're going kinda slow,' " Mandella said. "Then I
looked down and, 'Whoa.' "
Mandella, not one to break out into song, couldn't
help himself as he walked away from the grandstand.
The Hall of Fame trainer, with a smile plastered on
his face, started to croon Buck Owens' "Act Naturally."
"Gonna make a big star out of me," he said as he
trailed off.
"It was meant to go off a little easy and finish like
we do most of the time, and it was a little quicker
than we'd planned, but she does that often," Mandella said at his barn. "I think we're in pretty good
shape."
It was Beholder's sixth workout in preparation for
the Hirsch, following her eighth straight stakes score
June 4 in the Vanity Mile (gr. I).
"I find her to overcome my training. That's the
most important thing," Mandella said jokingly. "In a
lot of ways, she has gotten better every year. She has
got an ornery streak, but that could be part of why
she's so good." BH

p.m. PDT July 24 at Del Mar.
It was the Uncle Mo colt's final workout before returning to the races July 31 in the $1 million Betfair.
com Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth Park.
Nyquist has been away since incurring the first loss
of his career in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) May 21,
after which he had a fever.
Under regular rider Mario Gutierrez, Nyquist
entered the track at the seven-furlong gap and
backtracked to the three-eighths pole before turning
and galloping up to the starting line for a work in
company with 2-year-old maiden colt Sorry Erik. The
stablemates are owned by Paul Reddam.
With track announcer Trevor Denman making
the call for the crowd, clocker Russ Hudak caught
Nyquist in splits of :25 4/5, :50 2/5, and 1:14 2/5 before going the final quarter in :24.90 to complete the
one-lap journey around the main track.
"I'm very happy with it," trainer Doug O'Neill
said. "He broke off nice and relaxed—settled nicely—and when Mario called on him, he finished up
well. He did everything we wanted and did it the
right way." BH

CALIFORNIA CHROME, 'DIAMOND' STARS
OF SALE
By Tracy Gantz

BENOIT PHOTO
mmediately after the races at Del Mar, the Barretts paddock sale July 23 was topped by California
Chrome and California Diamond.
While California Diamond actually topped the sale
at $125,000, California Chrome's memorabilia from
his San Diego Handicap (gr. II) victory earlier in the
day raised $20,000 for the V Foundation.
Jockey Victor Espinoza came out to the Del Mar
paddock still clad in the silks in which he piloted California Chrome to a game victory over Dortmund. The
silks were part of a package that included the horse's
halter and his shoes donated by California Chrome's
owners to raise money for cancer research.
Mark Stanton, a horseplayer from Cherry Hill,
N.J., in town for Del Mar's handicapping tournament,
bought the package.
"I love the horse," Stanton said. "But my mom,
Ellen, died of breast cancer, and so when I found out
that this was being auctioned to benefit the V Foun-
dation, I said, 'I'm not going to stop bidding.' "
Mike Stinson, a partner in California Chrome from
Fort Worth, was the underbidder on the California
Chrome package. Immediately after the purchase,
Espinoza took off the silks and handed them to Stanton. Owners Perry and Denise Martin and Duncan
and Frank Taylor congratulated and thanked Stanton
for supporting the cause.
California Diamond, winner of this year's Santa
Anita Juvenile Stakes, topped the sale. Rafael Becerra
Jr. purchased the California-bred 2-year-old colt on
behalf of Gary Hartunian's Rockingham Ranch. Havens Bloodstock Agency consigned the son of Harbor
the Gold—Carries a Jewel, by Slewdledo.
"I saw his first start, when he broke his maiden,"
Becerra said. "He was a little bit green, but he broke
his maiden in fast time. Then he won the Juvenile,
and I think he still has more potential and upside."
Stormy Hull bred California Diamond, and John
Brocklebank trained him to his Juvenile victory for
Twin V Farm.
During the sale, trainer Jeff Bonde purchased a
2-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Stay Thirsty—
Chitka, by Jade Hunter,
for $82,000. Kim McCarthy's McCarthy Bloodstock sold the unraced
filly.
The paddock sale
was being held for
the fifth time and was
originally started to
help Del Mar bring in
horses from out of
state as part of its Ship
& Win program. This
year, seven horses
grossed $296,000 and
averaged $42,286, with
most of the 22 horses
cataloged not reaching
their reserves. In 2015,
19 horses grossed
$728,500 for a $38,342
average. BH

SUNDAY SILENCE DOMINATES
BROODMARE SIRES
adjusted earnings he is dominating the broodmare sire list with $21,258,065 in progeny earnings. His continued influence speaks volumes.
His chief earner, Duramente, won the Nakayama Kinen (Jpn-II) and finished second in the
Dubai Sheema Classic Presented by Longines
(UAE-I) and in the Takarazuka Kinen (Jpn-I). His
earnings to date are $1,779,157.
Danehill was the last stallion outside the U.S.
and Canada to top the North American broodmare sire list. He led in 2011 with $16,833,880 in
progeny earnings. This year Danehill ranks ninth
by earnings through July 23 but is the leading
broodmare sire by number of black-type stakes
winners with 23.
With 11 black-type stakes winners, Sunday
Silence is in a three-way tie for fourth place with
Galileo and Sadler's Wells.
Storm Cat, the second-leading broodmare
sire, also had help from adjusted Japanese earnings. As a broodmare sire his chief earner Real
Steel has $3,671,319 in earnings to date. Most
came from winning the Dubai Turf sponsored
by DP World (UAE-I), but he picked up another
$1.039 million finishing third in the Nakayama

By Eric Mitchell
ince Blood-Horse sire lists began including
adjusted Japanese earnings, the appearance
of Sunday Silence at the top of the 2016 leading
broodmare sire list is not surprising.
The dual classic-winning son of Halo became
a tour de force following his 1991 export to
Japan. Sunday Silence was the most successful
stallion in Japanese history, leading the sire
ranks 13 consecutive years, from 1995 through
2008, according to the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association.
Two factors set up Sunday Silence's appearance on the Blood-Horse broodmare sire list,
which only includes stallions represented by at
least one North American starter.
Running Kentucky-bred, Japanese-based
Lani in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum!
Brands (gr. I) opened the door. Lani earned a
spot in the Derby starting gate by winning the
UAE Derby Sponsored by The Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group (UAE-II).
Lani made steady progress through the Triple
Crown series, finishing ninth in the Derby, fifth
in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and third in the
Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (gr. I).
Once qualified to appear on the broodmare
sire list, Sunday Silence then got a boost from
his Japanese runners. The large disparity between North American purses and the substantially higher offerings in Japan, Hong Kong, and
Singapore, the Blood-Horse does not account for
these earnings using a straight currency conversion.
Beginning with 2015, an adjusted earnings
model that puts Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore earnings on par with North America was
applied. A stallion gets credit for the earnings
and the distortion is minimized.
