In his fifth start on the grass at the seaside racetrack July 17 in the $250,000 Eddie Read Stakes (gr. IIT), the 5-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile collected his fourth win with a game front-running effort. Under the guidance of Rafael Bejarano—who also rode Midnight Storm to victory last time out in the Shoemaker Mile (gr. IT)—the Phil D'Amato trainee clicked off fractions of :23.82, :48.03, and 1:12.18 under a bit of pressure from grade II winner Bolo. The stalking challenger moved within a half-length in the final turn, but was no match for Midnight Storm and Bejarano, who had other concerns in the stretch. A pair of closing challengers loomed, then moved alongside the front-runner in the final furlong. Last out Charles Whittingham (gr. IIT) winner Si Sage got a dream trip on the rail with first-time rider Victor Espinoza and two-time grade II winner Ashleyluvssugar almost got even on the outside, but Midnight Storm had just enough left to battle back between and win, hitting the wire in 1:47.88 on a turf course rated firm. "This horse is just doing so good now. Confidence is just oozing out of him. He stuck his head out there and he wasn't going to let them pass. Great performance and great ride by Raf." Ashleyluvssugar just missed to finish second by a half-length, followed by Flamboyant, who caught Si Sage for third in the final strides. Off as the 8-5 favorite in the field of nine, the winner paid $5.40, $3.40, and $2.60 across the board. Ashleyluvssugar brought $5.60 and $3.40, and Flamboyant delivered $3.40 to show. Finnegans Wake rallied from last to come in fifth, followed by Patentar, Texas Ryano, Ohio, and Bolo, to complete the order of finish. The win was the fourth graded score for Midnight Storm. He also won the 2015 Seabiscuit (gr. IIT) and the 2014 Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT), both at the beach in north San Diego County. Co-owner Little Red Feather swept the two North American graded stakes Sunday. Earlier in the day, Midnight Miley won the Ontario Matron (Can-III) at Woodbine. Bred in Kentucky by part-owner Alex Venneri and Marjorie Post Dye, out of the Bertranto mare My Tina, Midnight Storm has a 7-3-0 record from 17 starts, with earnings of $981,110. GEORGE SALES By Ron Mitchell W Sales, eventually becoming a partner during his 10year stint with the agency. St. George and his wife, Michelle, operate Brookstone Farm on a portion of the late W. T. Young's historic Overbrook Farm near Lexington, which Michelle manages. Despite his success with the Curlin colt, St. George said the Fasig-Tipton July sale—with a decline in gross of 21.2%, an 11.8% average price decline, and a 37.5% buyback rate—was disconcerting to himself and many other consignors. "The top was very competitive, and it was very selective," the consignor said. "It seemed that it was all or nothing. It was very tough in the bottom and middle. We sell at all levels and it's discouraging to see the RNA rate high. "It seems like everyone wants the same horse. If you don't tick all the boxes and have something of quality, you are going to struggle." St. George said he is hopeful there will be greater demand at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga select yearling sale Aug. 8-9. "It is a completely different market, and you would hope you get more end-users and trainers there because of the race meet. I would hope there is bigger demand than there was in July." BH FASIG-TIPTON PHOTO hen Archie St. George established his equine sales agency five years ago, one of his goals— not unlike anyone else's in his business—was to have a horse top a major North American sale. Those aspirations came to fruition in a relatively short period of time, when Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds and Breeze Easy purchased a Curlin colt from his consignment for $475,000 to lead the July 12 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July selected yearling sale. Bred in Florida by Myron Miller's Miller Racing, the Curlin colt is a half brother to stakes winners Swinger's Party and Hubba Shake, and from the extended female family of Ogygian, Honour and Glory, and Lookinforthebigone. "It's fantastic to top a sale," said St. George in the distinctive brogue reflective of his native Ireland. "It is not an easy feat. I had always hoped we'd top a sale, but I thought we would have horse top a session at Keeneland (September yearling sale) before we had a sale-topper. It is a great achievement for the breeder and for everyone involved in it. I am just lucky to be part of it." The Curlin colt is not the most expensive St. George sale—that distinction belongs to Fashion Plate, who sold for $1.2 million at the 2014 Keeneland November sale—but he has the potential to become the best. "He was an outstanding physical, he was by an outstanding stallion, and he had a good pedigree," St. George said. "He deserved to bring a big number. He's got a big shot (at the racetrack)." Included among the St. George graduates is grade I winner Hootenanny, sold for $75,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale. A native of County Kilkenny and a fifth generation horseman, St. George relocated to the U.S. to join Eaton Archie and Melissa St. George sold the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale topper BLOOD-HORSE DAILY Download the FREE smartphone app MONDAY, JULY 18, 2016 PAGE 4 OF 15 BEHOLDER 'READY' AFTER DEL MAR WORK By Blood-Horse Staff T Farm, has won 17 of her 22 starts and more than $4.7 million. She was champion 2-year-old filly in 2012, champion 3-year-old filly in 2013 and then—after a 2014 season that saw her race only three times due to various problems—champion older mare in 2015. She is on a seven-race win streak. Besides the Hirsch, which she captured last year, Beholder is again being pointed toward Del Mar's signature race, the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I) Aug. 20. Last year she dominated a field of nine males by more than eight lengths in a powerhouse performance. This time around, however, the challenge could be a fair bit stronger: California Chrome is being pointed for the same race. Another likely Clement L. Hirsch runner, Hronis Racing's Stellar Wind, worked earlier in the morning for trainer John Sadler. Last year's 3-year-old champion filly went seven furlongs in 1:25 2/5. She worked with the 5-year-old maiden mare Carnival Lights and, like Beholder, Stellar Wind went "seven from the six," meaning she started her work at the six-furlong pole, then continued out one furlong past the finish line. Stellar Wind chased Beholder home in their most recent start, in the Vanity (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park June 4. BH COURTESY OF GARY TASICH hree-time champion mare Beholder went through a business-like workout July 17 at Del Mar, where she covered seven furlongs in company in 1:27 with regular rider Gary Stevens at the controls and trainer Richard Mandella looking on. Del Mar clockers gave the 6-year-old Henny Hughes mare splits of :25 3/5, :51 1/5, 1:03, and 1:14 4/5 through six furlongs. She worked together with a 3-year-old maiden named Saltini from the Mandella barn about 7:50 a.m. PDT on an empty racetrack. Del Mar racing officials cleared the track between 7:45 and 8 a.m. for her and other likely runners for the July 30 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (gr. I). Stevens, who has ridden Beholder 12 times and won 11 of them, started her out about four lengths behind her workmate approaching the six-furlong marker, then cruised behind her through the far turn. Saltini shifted out and off the rail inside the quarter-pole, and Stevens and Beholder took the inside route to draw even at the eighth-pole. With minimal encouragement from her rider, Beholder steadily pulled away through the lane and was several lengths ahead as she crossed the wire. She continued her drill on through to the seven-furlong marker, while her workmate was finished at the wire. Saltini was given a final time of 1:15 4/5 for six furlongs. "She's ready to run," Beholder's Hall of Fame conditioner said after the drill. "We weren't trying to invent anything today. We just wanted to get some good wind in her and we did that. I think she's as good as ever." The Kentucky-bred, owned by B. Wayne Trainer Richard Mandella said Beholder is as good as ever heading toward the grade I Clement L. Dortmund worked with Bob Baffert stablemate Fusaichi Samurai and the pair went through their work on an empty track at 10:30 a.m. following the normal conclusion of training hours. Del Mar's clockers timed Dortmund, with jockey Stewart Elliott up, in :24 1/5, :47 3/5, and :59 flat prior to his final time. They had him galloping out to seven furlongs in 1:25 3/4. Fusaichi Samurai was given a five-furlong clocking of :59 4/5. Beginning at the five-eighths pole several lengths behind Fusaichi Samurai, Dortmund and Elliott came up on the outside and drew even at the top of the stretch. The stablemates went evenly until Dortmund pulled clear 50 yards before the wire. Gary Stevens has the mount on Dortmund for the San Diego. BH COURTESY OF GARY TASICH entucky Derby Presented by Yum! "It's kinda a precautionary thing. Down here, with the air so heavy— we haven't made up our minds completely, but I'm leaning that way." Brooklynsway, ridden by Robby Albarado, won the Mari Hulman George by 8 1/2 lengths over Pangburn in 1:43.02 for 1 1/16 miles on a track rated fast. Flint said he sees bigger things for the filly. "I'm telling you, I'm amazed that as much as I've run her, she's still strong and durable," Flint said. "She doesn't carry her race with her. She'll come from behind. She'll go to the front. She'll work with the group she's in there with. We've been beaten a few times, but every time she got beat, something had to happen—she stumbled, she fell, she got shut off or in tight where you couldn't make a run. "I'm amazed every time I see her run. Every time she's getting a little bit better. You thank God for what you've got and try to keep it in one piece and cherish it, and that's what I'm doing." When asked about future stakes for Brooklynsway, Flint said: "I have Keeneland in mind and I have Churchill in mind (for late summer and fall), and I might even go down to Ellis Park." The Western Kentucky track will offer the $100,000 Groupie Doll Stakes (gr. III) for fillies and mares at one mile Aug. 6. BH JAMIE LINSCOTT r. Naveed Chowhan had his eye on the filly Brooklynsway early in her career, but it wasn't until the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale that he got his chance to purchase the Ontario-bred daughter of Giant Gizmo. The Chowhans had a share in the stallion and were interested in some of his progeny. "When his first crop came, he sired this one," he said of Brooklynsway after she easily won the $100,000 Mari Hulman George Stakes for fillies and mares July 16 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. "We tried to get her but we couldn't. So as soon as we saw her entered in the sale, we jumped on it." Chowhan purchased Brooklynsway for $180,000 and transferred her to trainer Bernie Flint, with whom he has partnered on many stakes winners. For Chowhan, Brooklynsway this year won the Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland, finished second in the Fleur de Lis Handicap (gr. II) at Churchill Downs, and checked in third in the Arlington Matron Stakes (gr. III) to go along with her Mari Hulman George victory. "She is as special as any that we've had," Chowhan said. "But we're blessed to be in races like this. We're very happy." Brooklynsway was well established before the purchase in late 2015. She won four Canadian-restricted races at Woodbine, including the Bison City Stakes, which is a filly classic. She also finished third in the Mazarine Stakes (Can-III) at 2. Part of this special section will evaluate, by sire, the rate of return for horses purchased as yearlings and resold at 2. This column adds another layer to the snapshot of results, by also looking at the ratio of yearling average to 2-year-old average in addition to ROR, in order to see who stands out by both the market's perceived appreciation in value and by profitable sales. One intriguing horse stood out: Redding Colliery. The freshman sire and son of Mineshaft—Joop, by Zilzal, is the juvenile season's leading sire by the growth in appreciation between yearling average and 2-year-old average of pinhooked horses sold. His ratio is 6.99 on six horses sold from seven offered. As yearlings, his pinhooked progeny averaged $8,583 and resold as juveniles for a $60,000 average. Reinforcing his perception is his 99% ROR. Redding Colliery's top-selling horses came from the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s April sale. A filly out of Melisma (Well Decorated) sold for $95,000 to Debbie Easter, agent, out of the Grassroots Training and Sales consignment. The average at the Craven sale that year was $211,445 for 116 sold. Fitri Hay raced the colt in England at 2 with Herman Brown Jr. and then sent him to Dubai, where he finished third in the Gulf News UAE Two Thousand Guineas (UAE-III). Redding Colliery's 4-year-old year in the U.S. was his best. Under the care of trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, the colt never finished off the board in seven starts, with wins between 8 1/2 and 10 furlongs in the 2010 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (gr. II), the Lone Star Park Handicap (gr. III), and the John B. Campbell Handicap. He also placed second in a rough edition of the Clark Handicap (gr. I), in which Successful Dan interfered with both the declared winner Giant Oak and Redding Colliery. He was retired at 6 with $776,885 in earnings. Redding Colliery has five starters to date, with his daughter Winning Dulcinea the best so far. She has three seconds and a third in Mexico. Though Redding Colliery won at 2, his best performances came at 3 and 4, so his runners will likely need time before showing their true ability. The market indicates his progeny are worth watching.
