THE SAINT COMES MARCHING IN
BEST OF THE WEST MEET OUT EAST
He couldn’t quite get the better of Horse of the Year
candidate Ghostzapper or top handicapper Peace Rules,
but Saint Liam (Saint Ballado) proved best in the GII
Clark H. at Churchill Downs yesterday. The bay colt
was second by a head to Peace
Rules in the Feb. 29 GII New
Orleans H. and finished third
behind that rival in the Apr. 3
GII Oaklawn H., then disappeared. He was put to the test
in his return, the Sept. 11 GI
Woodward S., but battled
Saint Liam (outside)
Ghostzapper every step before
Four Footed Fotos
giving way grudgingly to run
second by a neck at level weights. The 6-5 chalk to go
one better in the Clark, Saint Liam was bumped at the
break, then pressed the pace for six furlongs. He forged
to the front in the stretch and held Seek Gold (Touch
Gold) and a less-than-determined Perfect Drift
(Dynaform er) at bay. Click for the brisnet.com chart
or the brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree.
Both are stabled at Hollywood Park, but Pico Central
(Brz) (Spend a Buck) and Kela
(Numerous) have shipped all the
way across the country to lock
horns in the GI Cigar Mile H. at
Aqueduct this afternoon. Already
a three-time Grade I w inner this
season, Pico Central is head-andhead with GI Breeders’ Cup
Sprint hero Speightstown for the Pico Central Adam Coglianese
Eclipse Award as the year’s top
sprinter. Trainer Paulo Lobo believes that his victories in
the GI Carter H., GI Met Mile and GI Vosburgh, where
Speightstown finished third, should be enough to sway
the voters, no matter the outcome at the Big A. “Pico
has done enough the rest of the year to be sprint champion,” Lobo said. The five-year-old has a record of five
wins from six starts in 2004, suffering his lone defeat
when third behind fellow California shipper Kela in the
Aug. 15 GII Pat O’Brien Breeders’ Cup H. at Del Mar.
He rebounded to win the Oct. 2 Vosburgh by four
lengths, but owner Gary Tanaka declined to pay the
supplementary fee for the Breeders’ Cup. Kela, who
also captured the GIII Texas Mile and the GI Bing
Crosby Breeders’ Cup H. from his eight starts this year,
was at Lone Star Park Oct. 30 and acquitted himself
well, closing to be second behind Speightstown in the
Sprint. “He would have gotten up if he had a little more
ground,” trainer Mike Mitchell said. “He had to go
around a lot of horses and ran out of time.” The sixyear-old has been first or second in five of six mile tries.

Daydreaming had won every other start this year,
sandwiching losses in between her victories in a M ar. 1
allowance at Gulfstream, a May 6 allowance at
Belmont, an Aug. 4 optional claimer at Saratoga and
the Oct. 1 GIII Indiana Breeders’ Cup Oaks. But the bay
broke that pattern here, finally gaining back-to-back
success as the even-money chalk. The Ogden M ills
Phipps homebred was allowed to settle in fourth as first
Tempus Fugit (Alphabet Soup) and then Pop Princess
(Alphabet Soup) cut out the fractions. Roar Emotion
took over at the eighth pole, but she yielded in the
dying yards as Daydreaming held off Bending Strings
for the score. “Bending Strings was way out in the
middle of the track,” jockey Jerry Bailey explained. “I
could see her, but my filly couldn’t. She put [Roar Emotion] away and kind of thought the race was over. The
last two jumps, she saw [Bending Strings] and you
could feel her surge again.” Click for the brisnet.com

Cajun Beat follow ed up on his upset win in last year’s
GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint with a 1 1/2-length score in the
Jan. 3 GIII Mr. Prospector H. at Gulfstream Park, but
had been held winless in his four starts since. The dark
bay was second behind Alke in the Feb. 7 GIII Deputy
Minister H. before shipping to the Middle East to run
fourth in the Mar. 27 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen. Freshened after his international adventure, the four-year-old
was moved to trainer Bobby Frankel’s barn during his
vacation. He came back to be fourth behind Pico Central (Brz) in the Oct. 2 GI Vosburgh S. and fifth behind
Speightstown in the Oct. 30 GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint
and it was decided a surface switch was in order. Cajun
Beat, who was second by a neck in his only other grass
effort, a Churchill Downs allowance test 17 1/2 months
ago, was the 2-1 favorite with the return to the lawn
and came through for his backers, closing from seventh
to win with something left.

Halory Leigh ran her record over the Churchill main
track to four out of six, coming from off the pace to
record a second consecutive graded-stakes victory.
Campaigned on the grass over the summer, the chestnut was second in the GIII Locust Grove H. over this
turf course June 26, but finished seventh in three
straight efforts--the GI Diana H. at Saratoga July 31,
the GIII Ballston Spa Breeders’ Cup H. Aug. 30 and the
Kentucky Cup Ladies’ Turf at Kentucky Downs Sept.
25. Returned to the main track, the four-year-old earned
a then-career best 103 Beyer for a four-length allowance victory at Keeneland Oct. 10 and topped that with
a 105 for her 14-1 upset in the GII Churchill Downs
Distaff H. Nov. 7. Favored in the absence of Azeri here,
Halory Leigh raced within easy striking distance of the
lead, came wide for the drive and pulled clear under
left-handed urging. Click for the brisnet.com chart or

Lesroidesanimaux bids for his fifth consecutive victory in his sixth U.S. appearance. The chestnut started
three tim es in his native Brazil,
breaking his maiden by 11 1/4
lengths in May of 2003 and
running second in a Group 1
event that June. Sent north
after that effort, he opened
his U.S. account with a
fourth-place finish in a Santa

then reeled off wins in a Jan. 31 allowance and a Mar.
20 optional claimer in Arcadia and the May 1 GIII
Inglewood H. at Hollywood Park. The four-year-old was
given a break over the late spring and summer, returning to add to his streak with a 1 1/4-length tally in the
Oct. 30 GIII Morvich H. at Santa Anita. The “King” has
most to fear from stablemate Nothing to Lose. The
four-year-old took the Aug. 28 GII Fourstardave H. at
Saratoga and the Oct. 9 GI Shadwell Turf Mile at
Keeneland. He was a well-backed 4-1 in the Oct. 30 GI
Breeders’ Cup Mile, but failed to fire after racing wide
and finished 11th. Special Ring, who successfully defended his title in the July 25 GI Eddie Read H., also
needs to rebound after running 13th in that event.

Undefeated Rockport Harbor will look to add to his
lofty reputation with a fourth straight victory. Like his
one-time stablemate Smarty
Jones, the $470,000 KEESEP
yearling started his career at
Philly Park, breaking his maiden
in eye-catching fashion Sept. 12
and adding a facile allowance
score Oct. 12. The gray was
odds-on to remain unbeaten in
Rockport Harbor
the Nov. 2 GIII Nashua S. at AqAdam Coglianese photo
ueduct and did just that, cruising
to a 6 1/4-length score over subsequent GIII Laurel
Futurity hero Defer. Trainer John Servis had originally
stated he would skip the Remsen and head to Oaklawn
Park with the colt, but changed his mind. “He came out
of the Nashua so good,” Servis
said. Also a perfect three-for-three
coming into today’s test is New
York-bred Galloping Grocer. The
chestnut gelding made his stakes
debut in the restricted one-m ile
Sleepy Hollow S. at Belmont Oct.
23, cruising to a front-running
7 1/2-length triumph, but trainer
Dominick Schettino said his charge
does not need to be on the engine
Galloping Grocer
early. “He will rate,” Schettino said.
Adam Coglianese
“He doesn’t have to be on the lead
and that’s a big plus when you add
distance. His mother won going long, so I’d be really
surprised if he got beat because of the distance.”

wide trip in the James C. Ellis Juvenile S. Aug. 22.
Freshened off that effort, the gray colt added Lasix and
turned in an excellent runner-up finish in a highly rated
renewal of this track’s GIII Iroquois S. Nov. 6. One of
the best juveniles in the state of Florida, B.B. Best won
the six-furlong Dr. Fager division of the Florida Stallion
S. Aug. 4, but disappointed when only third at odds-on
in the seven-furlong Affirmed division Sept. 6. He
atoned for that defeat with a front-running 1 3/4-length
victory in the In Reality S. at this distance Oct. 23.

SALES NEWS P
DYNAMIC DANEHILL DUO A pair of offerings from
the final crop of Danehill led Friday's round of trading at
the Tattersalls December Foal Sale in Newmarket.
Tullamaine Castle Stud in Co. Tipperary consigned the
topper, a son of the late Coolmore stallion out of the
Aga Khan-bred mare Zarawa (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) who
was purchased by BBA Ireland's Adrian Nicoll for
510,000 guineas. Angus Gold, representing Sheikh
Hamdan al Maktoum’s Shadw ell Stud, was the immediate underbidder. “I haven't seen a nicer foal for a very
long time,” said Nicoll. “He was outstanding looking
and they don't really com e any better than that. He is
for an Australian client who does not want to be
named, but the colt was bought to race in England or
Ireland. Hopefully he'll be good enough to stand as a
stallion in Australia.” Zarawa was purchased for just
36,000gns at the 1998 Tattersalls December sale. The
day’s second-best seller was a daughter of Danehill and
G1 Irish Oaks heroine Knight's Baroness (GB) (Rainbow
Quest), consigned by breeder Bjorn Nielsen through
Watership Down Stud. The 3/4-sister to MGSW and
MG1SP Riyadian (GB) (Polish Precedent) was knocked
down for 475,000 guineas by agent Peter Doyle, with
Johnny M cKeever the underbidder. “She was bought to
go racing for a long-established client,” said Doyle.
“She was a gorgeous-looking filly with a great pedigree,
and we're getting short of Danehills.” Danehill's son
Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) provided the two next-highest
prices. A half-brother to G1 Prix Saint-Alary winner
Fidelite (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) was bought for
300,000gns by Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, while
Adrian Nicoll from Norelands Stud purchased a filly by
that sire for 220,000gns. The final session of the December Foal Sale starts today at 10 a.m.

Thursday Session Gains Momentum...
Following Wednesday’s disappointing opener, the
Foal Sale came to life Thursday with a day of strong
trade that all but matched the record-breaking 2003
figures. The turnover of 4,359,100gns and the average
of 22,354gns came w ithin a fraction of last year's
record-breaking figures, but the median of 15,500gns
was dow n 2,500gns. A first-crop son of GI Breeders'
Cup Juvenile winner Johannesburg (Hennessy) and U.S.
stakes winner La Martina (GB) (Atraf {GB}) topped the
day at 200,000gns. Father and son pinhookers John
and Andrew Ellis, who trade as Bolton Grange, outbid
first Shadwell's Angus Gold and finally Irish pinhooker
Timmy Hyde to get the colt, consigned from Tim Cooper's Nuthurst Farm Stud. Andrew Ellis, who is based
near Alnwick in Northumberland, remarked, “He was a
very good walker and looked a trainer's horse--he could
just be a champion one day.” La Martina, a $95,000
RNA at Keeneland November last year, w as sold privately by Team Valor to Cooper, who had originally
bred the mare. She was returned to Britain after being
covered by Diesis (GB) this year. John Ferguson was
busy Thursday, recruiting future racing prospects for
Sheikh Mohammed. Accounting for three of the five top
sellers on the day, Ferguson picked up two colts by
Darley stallion Cape Cross (Ire) and one by Pivotal (GB).

hasn’t missed a beat.” Read the Footnotes, the 8-5

by Green Forest) ran third in his only other start at
Yarmouth Oct. 27. He broke smartly from the gate and
was positioned in a stalking third after the opening
exchanges. Sent to the front at the top of the stretch,
the 6-4 pick required a forceful Darryll Holland drive
inside the final furlong to hold the late thrust of Heat of
the Night (GB) (Lear Fan) by a head. The winner was a
130,000gns TATOCT yearling purchase. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-1, £3,521.
O-Highclere Thoroughbred Racing XXIII; B-Mount Coote
Stud; T-Gerard Butler.
Wolverhampton, 4.20, Mdn, £4,240, 2yo, 1m 141yds
(AWT), 1:52.13, stn.
BRIDEGROOM (GB) (c, 2, Groom Dancer--La Piaf {Fr}
{SW & GSP, $220,364}, by Fabulous Dancer), a debut
fifth over course and distance Nov. 5, led from flagfall
until joined by Maneki Neko (Ire) (Rudimentary) soon
after halfway. Seeing that rival off inside the final quarter, the 2-1 joint-favorite ran on well for pressure in the
closing stages to safely account for the running-on
Suivez Moi (Ire) (Daggers Drawn) by 1 1/4 lengths. The
winner is a half brother to Nitro (GB) (Primo Dominie
{GB}), MSW-Tur. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, £2,968.
