I was adding a couple of new locations to my Florida event map and realized just how many busy venues we have all over the state. Of course the northwestern part of Florida (Northern, upper Southwestern & Panhandle regions) has the most but I am very happy to report that the southeastern part of the state is starting to hold its own. No matter where you live, you are at least within no more than an hour of driving people and good places to drive. I am so happy I decided to try to entice people to come drive with me. Our little group is growing (slowly but it‟s growing) and I hope that more drivers will contact me once they realize what a great place I have to drive. You are invited to come join us every Sunday for our weekly afternoon drive thru SW Ranches in Broward. I‟m already planning a Holiday drive & Lunch sometime in December so those of you who are interested in participating, please start making plans. But to return to current events - this month there is the Cones & Hazards Clinic in Vero Beach; Blackprong HDT & ADT‟s at Cypress Keep in Bronson; the STRIDE show at the Florida Horse Park and the crowing jewel of our driving season, the Live Oak International in Ocala. If you would like to help out with the Whips‟ Live Oak Tailgating Tent I know Connie and Linda would love to hear from you and I can tell you from experience you will have a great time doing it. And last but ABSOLUTELY not least is Connie‟s St Paddy‟s Day Drive & Irish Dinner which is guaranteed to be a blast! I SOOO wish I lived nearer! Please plan to attend any of these fun events and volunteer if you can. There is just no excuse for anyone to not harness up and enjoy your horse and Florida‟s best weather! :~Deby PS - I want everyone to send out good thoughts for my friend and trainer MaryEllen, who got smooshed off her horse last week. I wish you a speedy recovery, my friend! Pam Stephenson sent me this great photo of her and her 4 year old great granddaughter, Chloe Roggin on Chloe's first carriage drive. Pam said when they started trotting Chloe giggled the whole time. A future driver, perhaps? Pam is driving her10 year old Morgan gelding, Arboria Matinee Idol. 3 MARCH 2012 View From Behind the Dash * area numbers are approximate locations 2012 Florida Whips Calendar of Events See Website for Entry Forms ~ www.flawhips.org ~ Date Location Mar 3-4 SE Region Mar 17 N Region Mar 24 N Region Mar 31Apr 1 Apr 7 N Region Apr 21 Pan Region Apr 28 N Region May 5-6 SE Region Mar 3 Wildwood Mar 10 Bronson Mar 18 Ocala Mar 22-25 Ocala Mar 31 Newman GA SW Region FL Whips Events # Vero Beach Clinic with John Porter CONTACT: Barbara Brooke-Reese brookereese@gmail.com / 772-532-7086 Anna Crothers 772-492-5038 / anna1cro@gmail.com Connie's St Patty's Day Pleasure Drive & Irish Dinner CONTACT: Connie Thoreson Cthoreson1@aol.com Live Oak Tailgate Party CONTACT: Connie Thoreson Cthoreson1@aol.com 9 Black Prong Schooling ADT, Cypress Keep - Bronson FL CONTACT: John Porter & Erika Matulich cypresskeep@gmail.com 813-982-2200 Mother of all Hazards Fund Raiser / Fun Day - Whisnant Farms CONTACT: Mary DeGreef bonezak42@aol.com Schooling Level Event in Kingston AL CONTACT: Cynthia Perkins perkinsc@embarqmail.com Steeplechase Fun Darby & Spring Membership Meeting CONTACT: Dona Love love2083@bellsouth.net Port Mayaca HDT CONTACT: Bettina Scherer bascherer@bellsouth.net 16 2 2 6 AL 2 5 Calendar ~ Other Events MARCH 2012 Helping Hooves Benefit Drive/Ride for Humane Society/SPCA of Sumpter County. See if you are there to represent. Do not be shy to send a photo in to Yvonne to be posted at an event. Her email is glassangel@bellsouth.net President’s Corner ... The past few weeks have been good ones for me and my pony. Poppy is coming along nicely and I think the two of us are on the way to becoming partners. And one more thing before you go, if you have not sent in your Florida Whips membership, please do so. Our Southeast Region membership is down from 56 to 41 this year. We can do it. And, if you want a recreational event in your area on the calendar, come to regional planning meeting this June 2012 and get it on . This summer we may have the use of the new Vinceremos facility for a nominal fee, as the Florida Whips group, and we could practice dressage once a week or every other week, at night. Get your membership in!! Check out the article here http://www.palmbeachpost.com/accent/pets/vinceremosgets-covered-riding-arena-benefit-friday-2157205.html We have entertained friends here on the farm and made our first trip "off campus" to Cypress Keep for a practice dressage test. Poppy survived the goats next to the arena and found the dressage letters with flowers to be far more scarier. It's nice to have our base dressage scores down. Now we know where we are starting from and it will be fun to see how we progress. I love the feedback and structure that driving dressage provides. Can't wait for the next test. Margaret "Peg" Belvin Southeast Region Asst. Director I have an adventure coming up the first week of March that I will tell all about in the next newsletter. Stay tuned! Membership News … Mary de Greef President, FL Whips We have had several new members lately and this brings our membership numbers up to 212. Each event seems to bring in new people, this proves what a great, friendly group of people we have. ............................ Southeast Region Report Are you a "Batchelor" far? Lindzi Cox, daughter of John & Margy Cox, made it to the final four and brought the bachelor home to Steeplechase in Ocala to meet her parents. There was lots of fun driving in and around Black Prong & the Gothe! Several Whips members got together for "bachelor" parties in Sarasota & Williston to watch the show. Thanks to Wendy Ying for posting the info to the CD-L list and giving us all a heads up to watch. As you read this we will have had 2 of the “big” CDE‟s in our state. I volunteered marathon day at Sunshine State and had a great day at the water hazard. I can‟t impress on people how much you learn about our sport by volunteering. And these events can‟t be run without LOTS AND LOTS of volunteers. I worked the dressage gate at Little Everglades CDE and will be section timing at Live Oak. It‟s been a busy time of year and my pony hasn‟t been doing as much as I would like but will get him back in the schedule very soon. My next show is the Spring Fling HDT in April, really looking forward to that. Also Bettina Scherer has found a great place to drive off Flying Cow Road. This past Sunday Feb 19th we held a recreational drive on the 4-mile trail. Some of our SE members were at at Little Everglades Feb 25th and 26th. You can keep tabs of scores on line at www.drivingnews.us. Linda Bennett Membership Chair Bettina won her dressage division at Sunshine State Florida Horse Park. I think she is really doing great, as well as Debra Sparks coming in 4th behind Bettina's 2nd place overall! Ann Hartnett was there also. Heather Schneider's Team is competing at Advance Level and going for International exposure looks so very spectacular! Keep up with our Southeast Members and let them know we really do appreciate them representing us!!!!! It included safety, harness and vehicle identification, rein boards, group people driving people, starting the horse in harness and draft, and actual hands-on supervised harnessing, putting to, and driving. Also of great help to the beginner was information on where to look for further horse training and driver instruction, and reliable sources of equipment The driving community owes thanks to Marjas Becker, Polly Butterworth, Margie Cox, April Dahl, Bev Driver, Linda Evans and Lynda Jowers for their expertise, diligence, and patience (and reliability and determination to participate by getting through the traffic blockages due to the massive I-75 pileup). Their efforts have added a significant number to the carriage driving sport. SE Region Director Kathie Beeson and husband Jerry Caudill celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Valentine‟s Day at Cedar Key. ~ Helen & Bob Tolmach Sporting Day of Traditional Driving Sally and I are glad to announce a new driving event in central Georgia - the Sporting Day of Traditional Driving at Blalock Lakes, Newnan, Georgia on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Blalock Lakes is a private, 3000 acre sporting community (www.blalocklakes.com) that has asked us to organize a carriage driving event. The Sporting Day of Traditional Driving format involves antique carriages and reproductions in a 3-phase (presentation, a Country Drive and cones), one-day event which recalls the driving skills and turnouts of the early 20th century. The Blalock Lakes event will include a Carriage Dog class and, hopefully, a Tailgate competition. BATTLE OF THE SEXES SATURDAY, JANUARY 28TH. Flying Cow Road Pleasure Drive The Winter Equestrian Festival, held in Wellington, Florida, during the winter months, is one of the largest horse shows in the world. Running for 12 straight weeks, the show provides hunter and jumper classes for over 5000 horses and 2800 riders coming from 40 states and 39 countries. Every Saturday night, the main event is presented in the International Ring under the lights, and this year the Whips were invited to take part in the Nespresso Battle of the Sexes. This event highlights a jumping competition that pits the men against the women and this year, Scott Adcox and Jan Jan Hamilton participated in a driving derby as part of the event. This is a new park created by the Village of Wellington and South Florida Water Management. Consisting of a five mile track raised shell rock surface with level grass sides that make it perfect for carriage driving, with either hard or pneumatic wheels. This has become Deb Sparks new training track with lots of atmosphere! We didn‟t have much notice and Equestrian Sports Productions asked us to keep it short and simple. On Friday night, I received an email that stated what they really wanted was not an individual timed event for each driver, but a match race, so we redesigned the course and hoped for the best. The ESP folks are so amazingly good at what they do-- we had Peter Doubleday announcing, a jump crew to help set the hazards, electrical times and score board, music and a jumbo video screen that played a driving video that USEF produced for us. It was first class all the way. The guys team was Scott Adcox and Bus Hamilton navigating, and Jan Jan, with mom Nifty on the back made up the gals team. They all did a fabulous job, and their horses were definitely “up” under the bright lights and in front of a full house. Scott and Nupafeed‟s Auto Pilot finished up ahead of Jan Jan with Jao Desparado, “Desi”, and after they exited the ring, I think the crowd was truly hoping for more. The idea of doing a derby, side-by-side with the jumpers, seemed like an outrageous idea two years ago, but that idea has become a reality and has proven to be an incredible opportunity to showcase carriage driving here in South Florida. ~ Bettina Scherer The wildlife is prolific, as drivers remarked on seeing an eagle and lots of ibis and water fowl. There are walking trails that are separate from the horse back riding/ or driving trails. Joining Sunday's excursion were members Anna Crothers, Paul Reese and Barbara Reese from Vero, Susan Guinan, Jackie Walsh, Bettina Scherer, and Deb Sparks. We also had two ladies that are soon to join as they need help getting their ponies started. The next recreational pleasure drive will be at Dupuis State Park, time yet to be arranged. If you are interested let Peg Belvin know some dates you could make the drive.
