Submitted by Judi Haas The following sequence of photos provides you with a full- proof way to tie a horse without breaking leads, limbs, or halters. Many horsemen have been using this method for years. But unless you've been introduced to it, up close and personal, it’s probably not in your repertoire. Thank you Melissa Warner of Continental Acres, Weirsdale Fl. for introducing me to this concept - forty years late. But, hey it's never too late to learn! FIRE FUNDRAISER Our fellow Whips member and Seminole feed rep for the Southwestern and Eastern Region, Jill Cullinan Haight, had her home burn to the ground on January 8 in Webster, FL. Jill, husband Marty, daughter Kelly, and the household pets escaped in the nick of time with only their pajamas. There is absolutely nothing else left. The horses and other livestock are all fine. The fire apparently started from a short in the dryer, and fortunately the smoke alarm went off, which is what alerted them to safety. Jill was very grateful that she was getting ready to go to the Florida Whips Fun Show in Parrish the next morning, because her show clothes, harness, and carriage were all safely packed in the horse trailer (needless to say, we missed her at the show!). They are temporarily camped with their church minister. Jill has been actively driving her Arab pony Warlord in both Pleasure and CDEs for the past two years. If she is not driving, she is helping out at clinics, weighing carriages and horses, and providing equine nutrition and feeding information. Marty has been a great navigator, and volunteers frequently as a cones judge and hazard judge. Kelly has started her youth driving career as well, and looks forward to more competitions in addi- If you've ever "been there, done that" the following will give you a chuckle. How do you... ...induce labor in a mare? Take a nap. ...cure equine constipation? Load them in a clean trailer. ...cure equine insomnia? Show them in a halter class. ...get a horse to stay very calm and laid back? Show them in a liberty class. ...get a horse to wash his own feet? Clean the water trough and fill it with fresh water. ...get a mare to come in heat? Take her to a show. ...get a mare in foal the first cover? Let the wrong stallion get out of his stall. ...make sure that a mare has that beautiful, perfectly marked foal you always wanted? Sell her before she foals. ...get a show horse to set up perfectly and really stretch? Get him out late at night or anytime no one is around to see him. ...induce a cold snap in the weather? Clip a horse. ...make it rain? Mow a field of hay. ...make a small fortune in the horse business? Start with a large one! tion to continued volunteering at carriage shows. Jodi Lante, from Under the Son Farms in Morriston, Florida, is generously offering a fantastic fundraiser to help recover from the fire. Jodi’s daughter Sarah has designed a fabulous t-shirt called “Trouble in Paradise” that depicts a humorous view of our horses during the hurricane season. For every t-shirt sold, Jodi will set aside $5 for the Fire Fund. All the information is on their website at h t t p : / / underthesonfarm.com/ artandgifts.html . You can pay with credit cards via Paypal – just remember to note that the shirt purchase is for the Jill Cullinan Haight Fire. Many thanks to Under the Son Farms for your generous fundraiser! Citrus Cup Morgan Regional Horse show will take place April 13-16 at Canterbury Equestrian Showplace in Newberry. For the first time the Carriage division will have its own judge (Tom Hildenburg) with a variety of classes. Friday’s schedule will have 2 pleasure ring classes while Saturday will start with Driven dressage followed by timed obstacles and last year’s big hit, ”carriage trail” (designed by our own Bob Quigley again this year). There will be an afternoon break before continuing with Gambler’s Choice and Double Jeopardy. The Show awards a traveling memorial trophy for Carriage High Point. As you can see we have a fun 2 days planned. So bring your Morgan and join the Fun! But when it greets you with a nicker, nuzzles your chest, and regards you with a large and liquid eye, the question of where you want to be and what you want to do has been answered. —Albert Borgmann, Crossing the Postmodern Divide, 1992 Page 5 February 2005 View From Behind the Dash Page 6 Whips Fun Show Results VSE / Sm Pony Turnout 1. The navigator (required) will act as a "gunner" equipped with a paintball gun and 30 balls. The course of obstacles had ten targets. The goal is to hit all ten targets with the fewest number of shots in the fastest time. Scores are calculated as follows: The total number of seconds on the course, with a one-second bonus per paintball brought back. Missing a target puts you down a tier (as in show jumping). Only clean rounds (all targets hit) qualifies you for final placings. Competition starts at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2005. All entries will complete their first run before anyone starts a second run. Second runs will have a different set of targets and entries will go in placing order (best score from the previous run goes first). Additional runs will be offered on a time/space available basis. Safety Information and Rules • Hardhats/Safety helmets are required for both driver and navigator. • If you don't have one, we will be glad to loan you one. • Eye protection is required for both driver and navigator. Sunglasses or eyeglasses are sufficient. If you don't have eye protection, we will be glad to loan you ours. • We will be providing you with a paintball gun and the balls. • You may use your own paintball gun, provided it is equipped with a safety, and we can load and unload it. • You may not use your own paintballs. We are using special paintballs that are compatible with the environment, as we will be competing on EPA protected land and need to be kind to our nine endangered species. Please use the paintballs we provide. • All members of your party must sign a liability release form, including drivers, navigators, grooms, guests, or assistants. • All dogs/pets must be kept on a leash at ALL TIMES. • All children under the age of 12 must have adult supervision at ALL TIMES. • There is absolutely no smoking allowed within 25 feet of any paddock or stall, as well as the house and lanai area. You are welcome to drive other trails and hazards on the property, but hardhats are required. Your entry provides you with the following: • Use of the paintball gun • 20 practice balls for the practice course 30 balls for one run on the competition course Additional runs or bags of 30 balls are available for $2.50 each. February 2005 View From Behind the Dash Page 9 Fabulous Fun at the New Year’s Paintball Competition! On January 2, 2005, Cypress Keep hosted the first annual New Year’s Carriage Paintball Competition! Twenty competitors entered the event from all types of carriage driving, including pleasure driving, trail driving, show driving, CDEs, and coaching. Many were excited to bring their non-horsey family members and friends along who were paintball enthusiasts. Although Cypress Keep is still in hurricane recovery mode, enough has been repaired to have a great show, and we were blessed by fabulous weather close to 80 degrees! All drivers drove a blind (no previous walking) course that was set up like a huge hazard with many obstacles to drive around, and ten numbered targets. Drivers and navigators (who acted as gunners) had to hit all ten targets with thirty paintballs in the fastest possible time. Accuracy was rewarded, with a second subtracted from the time for each paintball returned. Everyone was first given a set of twenty rounds for practice shooting. Amazingly, the equines were not bothered by the sound of the gun, the confusion of the humans looking for the next targets, or the general laughter and fun by all. In the first round for the pony division, DeDe and husband Gary Conner with Star (Trottingbred) took first place, Vivian and son Mark Luscuskie with Pony-Pony (Shetland) took second, and Jeanne and son Brett Abbot came in third with Eclypse (Morgan). Other top contenders hitting all ten targets included Julie Moore with Rocky (Welsh Cross), Victoria Law- rey with Winston (Hackney), and Karen Payne with Midget (VSE). In the first round for the horse division, Linda Jowers with Sabrina (Morgan) took first place with her son Charles, and second place with her husband Ruben. In third place was Alan Aulson with his Morgan Pair and Gregg Anthony gunning, in fourth place was Dona Love with Freyda (Friesian cross), and in fifth place was Jacqueline Musler with her Friesian Pair and husband Joe Musler gunning. The second round saw a completely different competition. In the pony division, Colleen Sullivan and David Getz with FilouB (German Riding Pony) took top honors. Jeanne Abbott came in second, and Marcia Southall took third with Angel, a white mule, and Gerry Cather gunning. Other top finishers with perfect rounds were DeDe Conner, Karen Payne, and JoAnn Wilson driving Pumba. In the horse division, Alan Aulson took top honors, Dona Love was second, and Jacqueline Musler was third. The third round saw our fastest times of the day. JoAnn Wilson turned in the top score in the pony division, and Alan Aulson took top honors in the horse division. Many thanks to all our competitors, including Toni Jones, Judy Howard, and BB Blackwelder. Even more thanks are due to our hardworking volunteer group, including John Porter, Erika Matulich, Serge Matulich, Dave Blackwelder, Gary Conner, and Barbara Lafferty. Their tireless efforts made the show possible! Cypress Keep plans to host further carriage paintball events during 2005, so stay posted for more details! Full event results and pictures are available at www.cypresskeep.com, and you can also check there for a calendar of events. February 2005 View From Behind the Dash Page 10 Black Prong Youth Education Series Welcomes Young Drivers to the Sport By Kristie Janes Black Prong Equestrian Center in Bronson, Florida is providing area youths and their parents or interested adults with a free, five-session Youth Education Series designed as an introduction to the activity and sport of Carriage Driving. Topics include: Care of the Horse and Harness; Equine Safety; How to Drive and Handle the Reins; Rules of the Sport and more. Owner Alan Aulson said the idea for this unique program was based on a successful program that Black Prong hosted in the Fall of 2004, in which Florida Whips' President Bob Quigley shared the basics of driving with the Levy County Sheriff's Explorers. As of press time, three sessions are complete, with more than 40 area youths and their parents participating in each session. Local instructors include Bob Quigley, Celia Evans, and Linda Jowers, all adjunct instructors who teach Carriage Driving at Santa Fe Community College, as well as trainers Robert Giles and the world-class driving team of Alan Aulson and Dr. Gregg Anthony. A horse and carriage were brought inside the Black Prong Pavilion during the introductory session on December 9, while Celia Evans, Bob Giles, Linda Jowers, Bob Landry, Bob Quigley, and Alan Aulson presented a lively introduction to carriage driving and the basics of harnessing. Volunteers Julie and Gregg Anthony served hot dogs and soda, and Maureen Aulson coordinated hospitality. On December 30, students enjoyed hands-on experience, with the opportunity to get behind a horse – many for the very first time – to hold the reins and feel what it’s like to control a horse. Julie Anthony, David Getz and Alan Aulson performed a hazard driving demonstration with actual timers, as the group divided into “cheering sections” for each driver. Everyone was a winner, as the students’ mounting enthusiasm and interest in the sport became obvious and contagious. On January 8, students experienced the critical function of the navigator as they drove the cones course, with Lynda Jowers driving Welsh ponies graciously loaned by Celia Evans (who also supplies the ponies for Cinderella’s Carriage at Disney Land!), Julie Anthony driving her Quarter horse, and international driver David Saunders using Maureen Aulson’s Morgan horse. Students also had the rare opportunity to audit a clinic with Dr. Franz Vetter, International Judge from Germany, who was on site for Black Prong’s Just For Pairs – and More! clinic. On January 18, students will experience dressage and cones, and February 5 final session will culminate with a judged show, with horses provided at no charge, as needed. Throughout the series, instructors are reinforcing the importance of international safety protocol guidelines. “One of our goals is to make sure they understand the safety reasons behind what we do,” said Lynda Jowers. Bob Giles reinforced the nuances of learning to “read” your horse. “Think of ‘empathy’ as another word for ‘driver,’ he said. “You read his body - his tension, pain, etc.- as though you’re with a friend. You don’t train a horse; you build a relationship, so your horse trusts you. The reins are like umbilical cords, and you keep control by driving with your mind and heart as much as your hands, to keep ‘real’ control.” Alan ← Bob Quigley explains the basics of harnessing with Alan Aulson’s Morgan horse and carriage, inside the Black Prong Pavilion! From left: Alan Aulson, Bob Quigley and Dot Saunders help reinforce the presentation. More than 40 area youths and their parents are enjoying the Black Prong Youth Education Series. ↓ February 2005 View From Behind the Dash Page 11 February 2005 View From Behind the Dash Page 12 OUR FIRST DRIVE on October 23RD AND 24TH, 2004 at AMAZING GRACE FARM in NAHUNTA, GA It’s been a fast three months since we had the pleasure of hosting Bob Quigley and his lovely wife, Joyce, for a driving clinic. Our club, The First Coast Chapter of Deep South Dressage and Combined Training based in very south Georgia and very north Florida, was started for the purpose of offering a social and educational framework for people that are interested in dressage and driving. Many of our members have young horses and are hoping to get a jumpstart on training “under saddle” by learning to long line our horses and even teaching them to drive. What a treat to have such an experienced clinician! Not only did he work with each of our horses, but as each horse was worked according to his age, previous training, and temperament he would explain to the owner and audience his view of the horses’ future training. My young Friesianthoroughbred mare was hitched to her cart and went on her first drive with Mr. Quigley! And then, holding my breath the whole time, I was able to drive her. It was almost as exciting as watching Button Lee’s Friesian stallion, Jilte, being hitched to a chariot and go driving down the rode like a champion. And his partner on the hitch was a mare. Did I mention my young mare, who was only two and a half years old, is a Jilte baby? Florence Hill and Hanna We’ve been working hard since the clinic in October and hope to ride or drive with the Florida Whips soon. Other members of the club are concentrating on starting their green horses on lunging and long lines. And hoping to have Mr. Quigley and others come to our area soon. Again, I would like to thank Mr. Quigley for a great weekend, and also Amazing Grace Farm in Nahunta, GA for their hospitality.
