About Chelsea Community Schools
Chelsea Community Schools (CCS) enhances the lives of Chelsea residents by
providing affordable, high-quality recreation and education opportunities to youth
and adults. Each season, hundreds of individuals participate in CCS classes and
dozens of community organizations use our city’s state-of-the-art public school
facilities. Since 1996, CCS, operated by the City of Chelsea’s Department of
Health and Human Services in collaboration with Chelsea Public Schools, has
been evolving in response to the diverse and changing needs of our community.

Chelsea Youth Chorus

The Chelsea Youth Chorus will be the City's premier choral ensemble.
Performance repertoire will be selected from the highest quality music in
the choral tradition. The group will consist of all four voice parts (soprano,
alto, tenor, and bass), and will sing both a capella and accompanied
repertoire. Limited number of openings by voice part.
Auditions: Youth who sing well and are eager to learn will be considered
for membership. Auditions consist of a vocal range test to determine
voice part, pattern echoing, and basic sight-reading. No preparation is
required.
Audition dates: Mon. Feb 1 or Wed. Feb 3

Blood Drive

ages 17+*
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Accident
and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and
those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease
may all need blood. Blood and platelets can only come from generous
volunteer donors.

Resume and Interview Preparation (English/Spanish)

ages 18+
Are you ready to look for a job but not sure how to begin? This two part
program exposes participants to the entire job search process so you
can look for a job with confidence. Upon completion of this program,
participants will be able to: 1. list various job search resources;
2. prepare a standard resume; 3. write a basic cover letter;
4. prepare for the interview. *Refreshments will be served.

Exploring Money with Children
Pennies, Nickels, Dimes and Quarters. . .
Teaching Preschoolers Money Skills
instructors: Kesia Ascencio & Andris Gonzalez
ages 3 - 5
Preschoolers learn about the different denominations of money. Reading
books, playing games, and singing songs about money help them
differentiate between the amounts. All leave with their very own piggy
bank and coloring handouts. Parents are welcome to observe the class.

Banking 101 for Kids

ages 8 - 10
Kids learn the origins of banking and money, denominations of cash,
parts of a check, meaning of deposits and withdrawals, importance of
saving money and the various jobs available at a bank. A great course
for introducing the basics of good money management. The Field Trip to
the Bank (see below) is included! *Refreshments will be served.

Take advantage of this great opportunity to discover what a local bank
offers your community! Kids participate in a Scavenger Hunt to help
them locate bank items such as: counting machines, the teller cash
drawer and the main vault. Come meet a Branch Manager, Head Teller
and a Bank President! Children must be accompanied by a parent.

Future Lawyers Club: Trial Practice
instructor: Anita Barnes
ages 9 - 12 Learn about torts, civil procedures, and contracts. Practice the key skills
of a lawyer, through role-play and activities. Great introductory course for
students interested in pursuing a career in law or law enforcement. The
class culminates in a trial in front of a judge and jury. Full participation in
this class is mandatory!

A single deck of cards can provide hours of entertainment for players of
all ages. Playing cards refine mental skills like logic, observation, and

American Red Cross Water Safety instructors
ages 6 - 12
In this one-week program, learn and improve fundamental swimming
skills to gain confidence in and around the water. Practice techniques
using games and water play. A low 8 to 2 student/teacher ratio ensures
that each participant receives attention at every lesson. Parents may
observe the final swim lesson. Bring your own swimsuit and towel,
change/shower in the locker room.

Flying Squirrel Puppet Theater

The Flying Squirrel Puppet Theater (FSPT) is an original puppet theater
produced by children! Over the year, the Flying Squirrel Puppeteers write
the storyline, create the puppets, and perform the show in front of a live
audience. FSPT serves as an engaging connection between art, drama,
writing and problem solving.
Theme for 2016:
Steampunk – a type of science fiction that incorporates technology and
aesthetic designs inspired by 19th Century steam powered machinery.
Puppeteers will explore looking at ordinary things in extraordinary ways!
Session II
Puppet Making: Create the characters! Learn the four main types of
puppets: Hand, Rod, Marionettes and Shadow. Create puppets that
complement the scripts written in Session I.

Ninth Annual Production - Summer 2016: Create a full length puppet

Knit Your Own Hat, Scarf & Gloves
instructor: Carmen Bermudez
ages 13+
Learn the basic stitches for making a wool hat, scarf or gloves. Most
knit designs are variations of two basic stitches, knit and purl. Crochet
designs begin with basics of holding the hook and basic stitches, such
as single crochet stitch. Types of needles and yarn will be discussed.
Practice needles are available for the first class.

Providing Security through Blankets

Participants with Intermediate/Advanced knitting or crocheting skills. Join
our partnership with the Greater Boston Chapter of Project Linus to knit
or crochet homemade washable blankets to give as gifts that will provide
warmth and comfort to seriously ill and traumatized children, ages 0-18.
All materials are donated - please bring your own knitting needles.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. *Pre-registration is required.

Child Care Services available for ages 4 -10 at an
affordable cost. Request must be made two (2) weeks
before your class begins.
Refund Policy
Chelsea Community Schools reserves the right to cancel or
discontinue classes at its own discretion. If a course is cancelled,
you have the option to get a refund or register for an alternative class
during the same session.
No refunds are given after classes have started. If we receive your
request to withdraw at least two weeks prior to the start time of your
course, you will receive a refund.
For students in English Language Classes ONLY: during the first week
of class, if a student feels that another level would be more suitable for
his/her learning needs, the student will be allowed to transfer to another
class pending instructor approval and available space.
Bad Weather
Classes and programs are cancelled if the Chelsea Public Schools
are closed. Closing will be announced on the major television news
stations—channels 4, 5, 7, City Cable TV - channel 15 and on a
recorded message by calling (617) 466-5233 after 2pm on weekdays,
or after 7am on Saturday and Sunday.

You may reserve class space for 48 hours using the options below.
Upon receiving your request, CCS will contact you to confirm your
reservation. Payment, in cash or money order, must be received at

El Coro Juvenil de Chelsea será el principal conjunto coral de la ciudad.
El repertorio interpretado será seleccionado de la más alta calidad
musical de coros tradicionales. El grupo consistirá de todas las

acompañamientos.

Teatro de Títeres las Ardillas Voladoras

El Teatro de Títeres las Ardillas Voladoras (FSPT por sus siglas en inglés)
es un teatro original de títeres producido por niños! A través de los años
los titiriteros de las Ardillas Voladoras escriben un cuento, crean títeres
y actúan en el espectáculo frente a una audiencia en vivo. FSPT sirve
como enlace entre arte, drama escritura y análisis crítico.
Temas para 2016:
Steampunk – un tipo de ciencia ficción que incorpora tecnología y
diseños estéticos inspirados en el siglo 19, máquinas con energía de
vapor. Los titiriteros exploraran mirar las cosas ordinarias de manera
extraordinarias.
Sesión II
Confección de Títeres: ¡Crea los personajes! Aprende los cuatros tipos

Política de Reembolso
Chelsea Community Schools se reserva el derecho de cancelar
o de descontinuar las clases a su entera discreción. Si un curso
es cancelado usted tiene la opción de recibir un reembolso, o de

Carmen Bermudez
has been crocheting and knitting

Lillian Carter
holds a BFA from The Boston
Conservatory and is currently an
adjunct faculty member there.
She teaches dance in many studios
