For those who want to learn how to get away or defend themselves in a violent situation. A person of any physical condition can participate. Find out how to fix a tire, adjust brakes and gears. Learn about chains, lubrication, and how to generally diagnose a problem. Review bike safety tips! Participants perform their original stories for friends and family on the final day of class. Fridays 6:15 - 7:15pm Oct 2 - Nov 20 $15 Future Lawyers Club: First Year of Law instructor: Anita Barnes New ages 9 - 12 3 General Learn about torts, civil procedures, constitutional law, and contracts. Practice the key skills of a lawyer, through role-play and activities. Great introductory course for students interested in pursuing a career in law or law enforcement. Fridays 7:15 - 8:30pm Oct 2 - Nov 20 $20 New Pennies, Nickels, Dimes and Quarters. . . Teaching Preschoolers Money Skills instructor: Kesia Ascencio ages 3 - 5 Preschoolers learn about the different denominations of money from the lowest value of money (pennies) and move up to a $100 bill. Reading books, playing games, and singing songs about money help them differentiate between the amounts. All leave with their very own piggy bank and coloring handouts. Parents are welcome to observe the class! *Refreshments will be served. Tuesday 5:30 - 6:30pm Oct 27 Contribution: $2* Banking 101 for Kids New instructor: Kesia Ascencio ages 8 - 10 Kids learn the origins of banking and money, denominations of cash, parts of a check, meaning of deposits and withdrawals, importance of saving money and the various jobs available at a bank. A great course for introducing the basics of good money management and the skills needed to create a brighter financial future. The Field Trip to the Bank (see below) is included! *Refreshments will be served. Mondays 5:30 - 6:30pm Nov 9 - 23 Contribution: $2* New Field Trip to the Bank General facilitator: Kesia Ascencio ages 6 - 10 Take advantage of this great opportunity to discover what a local bank offers your community! Kids participate in a Scavenger Hunt to help them locate bank items such as: counting machines, the teller cash drawer and the main vault. We accept donations of costumes from those who do not want to receive a costume in exchange. Drop off used, clean costumes at the CCC (113 Hawthorne Street) or bring them to CCS (180 Walnut St.) Participants can choose to swap or buy costumes. Saturday 1 - 3pm Oct 17 Free to Swappers Costumes: $5 Accessories: $2 Santa’s Mini Gingerbread Village coordinators: Rita Russell & Christiana Lauzon all ages Bring some holiday magic to your home by creating & constructing a whimsical mini enchanted village using icing, gingerbread, and candy plus a variety of recyclable containers. Saturday 1 - 3pm Dec 12 family of 4: $20 8 Eleventh Annual Halloween Celebration Children 3 - 10 years! Participate in ghoulish games such as musical Halloween symbols, pin the Boo on the ghost, cookie decorating & other ghostly activities. Come in your favorite costume! Watch a scary puppet show! Registrants receive a wicked trick or treat bag filled with delicious candy! Admission is free for infants and toddlers. Parental supervision is required. Sunday 4 - 6pm Oct 25 $5 Pre-registration is recommended! Decorate for Halloween with No-Carve Pumpkins instructor: Anita Barnes all ages 9 Family Bring your own pumpkins! Embellish your pumpkin with paint, sequins, googly eyes, ribbons. . . Create creepy, attention-grabbing pumpkins. Use a variety of crafts supplies and let the pumpkin decorating begin! Remember -- bring your own pumpkins! Saturday 11am - 1pm Oct 24 family of 4: $5 Arts Crocheting & Knitting for Beginners New instructor: Carmen Bermudez ages 13+ Learn the basic stitches for making a wool hat, scarf or blanket. Most knit designs are variations of two basic stitches, knit and purl. Crochet designs begin with basics of holding the hook and basic stitches, such as single crochet stitch. Types of needles and yarn will be discussed. Practice needles are available for the first class. Bring pen & paper for notetaking! Saturdays 2:30 - 4:30pm Oct 3 - Nov 14 $20 New Open Workshop for Crocheting & Knitting facilitator: Carmen Bermudez ages 13+ Whether you are a newcomer or experienced to the art of crocheting or knitting, it is fun to have a regular time and place to sit and work with others. This workshop is for those who would enjoy a congenial setting with a friendly group of knitters and crocheters. You’ll share new techniques while working on independent projects. Saturdays 2:30 - 4:30pm Oct 3 - Dec 19 No Cost* Knitting for Project Linus: Providing Security through Blankets facilitator: Carmen Bermudez ages 10+ Participants with Intermediate/Advanced knitting or crocheting skills. Join our partnership with the Greater Boston Chapter of Project Linus to knit or crochet homemade washable blankets to give as gifts that will provide warmth and comfort to seriously ill and traumatized children, ages 0-18. Saturdays 2:30 - 4:30pm Oct 3 - Dec 19 No Cost* 10 Flying Squirrel Puppet Theater* instructor: Demetrius Fuller ages 7 - 12 The Flying Squirrel Puppet Theater (FSPT) is an original puppet theater produced by children! Over the year, the Flying Squirrel Puppeteers write the storyline, create the puppets, and perform the show in front of a live audience. FSPT serves as an engaging connection between art, drama, writing and problem solving. Theme for 2016: Steampunk – a type of science fiction that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th Century steam powered machinery. Puppeteers will explore looking at ordinary things in extraordinary ways! Session I Script Writing: Create the story! Use your imagination to create and act out short scripts. Wednesdays & Fridays 5:30 - 6:45pm Oct 7 - 16 $15 Session II Puppet Making: Create the characters! Learn the four main types of puppets: Hand, Rod, Marionettes and Shadow. Create puppets that complement the scripts written in Session I. Wednesdays & Fridays 5:30 - 6:45pm Mar 9 - 18 $15 Session III ages 8 - 12* Ninth Annual Production - Summer 2016: Create a full length puppet show complete with original puppets, lights, music and sound! Apply these skills and learn to play many simple songs. Saturdays Oct 3 - Nov 21 Beginner: 11am - 12pm Advanced Beginner: 12 - 1pm $20 Keyboard for Teens & Adults* instructor: Rafael Silva ages 12+ Develop musical knowledge and keyboard skills through scales, chords, arpeggios, theory and ear training. Apply these ideas to learn a piano piece and begin exploring how to improvise and compose music! Explore using a pick and fingerstyle techniques! Bring your own acoustic or electric guitar with performing amp. No personal checks accepted. Child Care Services available for children ages 4 -10 at an affordable cost. Service must be requested two (2) weeks before your class begins. Refund Policy Chelsea Community Schools reserves the right to cancel or discontinue classes at its own discretion. If a course is cancelled, you have the option to get a refund or register for an alternative class during the same session. No refunds are given after classes have started. If we receive your request to withdraw at least two weeks prior to the start time of your course, you will receive a refund. For students in English Language Classes ONLY: during the first week of class, if a student feels that another level would be more suitable for his/her learning needs, the student will be allowed to transfer to another class pending instructor approval and available space. Bad Weather Classes and programs are cancelled if the Chelsea Public Schools are closed. Closing will be announced on the major television news stations—channels 4, 5, 7, City Cable TV - channel 15 and on a recorded message by calling (617) 466-5233 after 2pm on weekdays, or after 7am on Saturday and Sunday. Anita Barnes is a improvisation enthusiast having acted in two local productions while living in New York. She holds a J.D. from the New England School of Law. Maritza Cole has a MEd from Cambridge College and holds a certification in ABE and in foreign language (Spanish K-12). Aaron Corso has been a professional bicycle mechanic and bicycle advocate for over 20 years. He is the Service Manager at JRA Cycles in Medford. Carmen Bermudez has been crocheting and knitting since age 14. When she’s not holding a crochet hook, she can be found at the Sokolowski and Berkowitz Schools where she is a Special Education Clerk. Cynthia Cunningham has recently received her Bachelors in Music from Berklee College of Music. She has been singing her entire life and has been playing piano since age 11. Lillian Carter holds a BFA from The Boston Conservatory and is currently an adjunct faculty member there. She teaches dance in many studios throughout Boston. Gregory Deyermenjian has taught English to staff at The Fernald Center and to individuals in private settings. He has a MEd and a MA in International Development. Cara Cogliano is the Co-Director of Chelsea Community Connections. She was a former Williams School Pre-school teacher. 30 Demetrius Fuller is the Art Teacher at the Sokolowski Elementary School. He works with groups of children to produce and perform original puppet shows. Stephanie McConaghy is a long time Chelsea Police Officer with a specialty in Juvenile and Senior issues. She has been teaching selfdefense/awareness for six years. Yolanda Gonzales has a MA from Cambridge College and holds a certification in Bilingual Education elementary and early childhood, and in foreign language (Spanish K-12). José Ramos as well as being a Chelsea Police Officer, he has 30 years of martial arts experience and holds a third degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo. Annie Houston is TEFL certified with teaching experience in France and Italy. She holds a MS in Arts Administration from Boston University and works to promote cultural awareness and the arts. Gastrell Rossignol is a professional dancer and an instructor level Capoeirista known as Guerreiro. His nickname reflects his style of playing Capoeira which means "The Warrior." Christiana Lauzon is a painter, who has a love of history and the world around her. She is a graduate from Montserrat College of Art on her path to becoming an Art Therapist. Rita Russell is a culinary professional with 25 years of experience. She is a graduate of the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts.
