Former Wheat King and Medicine Hat Tiger left-winger Jason Chimera has
become the latest player to sign on with a foreign team in order to continue
working during the NHL work stoppage.
Chimera, a 33-year-old native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has signed
on with the HC Chomutov of the Czech Republic Extraliga and according to
latest reports, the deal with the foreign club will allow him to return once the
lockout in North America comes to an end. Prior to signing, Chimera was against
the idea of leaving the NHL and playing abroad in order to be actively part of the
labour negotiations between the league, team owners and Players’ Association.

he was ready to go earlier. He wanted to stay with his family and see how the
negotiations were going,” Chimera’s agent, Allan Walsh said in a phone interview
to the Washington Post. “Now he’s not really caring how the negotiations are
going, he wanted to get into games and he found a good spot. Whether he’s over
there for a week, two weeks or the rest of the year he’s in good shape.”
Jason Chimera was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers as the 121st overall
during round-five of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In a total of 663 games played
up until now, the veteran forward boasts 254 points (118 goals, 136 assists) and
658 minutes of penalty time in total.

With December set to begin, the Holiday season can’t be far behind
and there is no better indication of that than the annual Shoppers Mall
Teddy Bear & Toque Toss Night at Westman Communications Group
Place, scheduled for Friday night when the Wheat Kings play host to the
visiting Spokane Chiefs.
Fans attending the game have been encouraged to bring a new stuffed
animal, new toque or pair of gloves to the game and litter the ice when the
Wheat Kings score their first goal of the game. All stuffed animals, toques
and gloves will then be collected and donated to the local Christmas Cheer
Board.
The annual Teddy Bear Toss is an annual
Christmas tradition that began in Kamloops,
B.C., with the WHL’s Blazers in 1993. The
first Teddy Bear Toss in Brandon was held
the following year and has been a big hit ever

since.

The record for bears thrown onto the ice is over 26,000 set by the
Calgary Hitmen.

Army Band will be in attendance on Friday. Besides bringing the sounds

Friday’s Teddy Bear Toss will kick off what should be an exciting holiday
season for the Wheat Kings and their fans. This coming Tuesday, December
11th vs. Saskatoon is Juggernaut Rain Check Night, which means any
unused Wheat King ticket from the first half of the regular season can be
exchanged at the box office for a “free” ticket to this game (regular box
office agency fees apply). Fans attending Tuesday’s game are encouraged
to bring a new unwrapped toy or non perishable food donation for the
Westman and Area Traditional Christmas

BRANDON BITS: Two members of
the Wheat Kings will be recognized during
this weekend’s home games. Tonight, 20year old center NICK BUONASSISI will be
recognized for playing in his 300th career
WHL game last Sunday night in Medicine
Hat. A former Lethbridge Hurricane,
Buonassisi has fond memories of his first
ever Teddy Bear Toss as a member of the
Prince George Cougars. As a 15-year old affiliate, he scored the Cougars’
“Teddy Bear” goal in 2007...Swiss left-winger Alessio Bertaggia has been
chosen the Tip Top Tailors Wheat King Player of the Month for November.
In nine games last month, the former CHL Import first round selection
scored five goals and 12 points. He currently leads the team in scoring with
31 points, including fifteen goals.

Brandon defenceman Ryley Miller recently surpassed 500 career penalty minutes in the
Western Hockey League, becoming the first Wheat King to reach that milestone since the
Bruise Brothers – Randy Ponte and Jordin Tootoo – eclipsed it a decade ago.
In an age when many wonder if fighting has any place in the game anymore, Miller is an
unapologetic proponent of ‘old-time hockey.’
“I love it,” Miller recently told Rob Henderson of the Brandon Sun. “The energy, getting the
crowd going, getting some noise in the building, to see if I’m tougher than everybody else.”
Miller may not be tougher than everybody else, but the 20-year-old from Spruce Grove,
Alta., is tougher than any lanky 6-footer who barely appears to have packed on a pound
since he first broke into the WHL five years ago has a right to be. In his league-leading nine
fights this season, the 177-pound Miller has given up an average of more than two inches
and 25 pounds to his opponents.
“I think I can hold my own with mostly everybody in the league,” he told the Sun. “…
There’s always somebody bigger and tougher but no, I never really think about size. It just
happens.”
Miller is one of three 20-year olds on this year’s active roster and is currently in his fifth and
final year of major junior hockey.
