How the past influences
the present in design!
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset
glow,
Loved and were loved, and now
we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies
grow
In Flanders fields.
– John McCrae
Lest We Forget
The history of graphic design can serve as an
excellent source of inspiration, especially if you
study how art and technological developments
influenced certain designers. While the entire
history of graphic design is way too long for this
article, here are some interesting details to note.
Advertising existed in ancient times. Egyptians
wrote sales messages and designed wall posters on
papyrus, while politicians in Pompei and ancient
Arabia created campaign displays.
The lines between graphic design, advertising, and
fine art often blurred together until the mid-1800s.At
that time, Henry Cole explained the importance of
graphic design to his government (in Great Britain)
in the Journal of Design and Manufactures. Cole
went on to become influential in the growth of
design education.
You can see an incredibly successful example of a
logo as far back as 1885, when Frank Mason Robinson
created the classic Coca Cola logotype.Yet the actual
term “graphic design” didn’t appear until 1922, when
it was coined by the type designer, illustrator, and
book designer William Addison Dwiggins.
Throughout the 20th century, new styles and
technologies emerged rapidly, each one exerting
some influence on graphic design. For instance,
the Bauhaus movement embraced mass production
and the new machine culture after World War I;
2010
1973
after World War II photography began replacing
illustrations in most graphic design, and postmodernism brought new materials, bright colors,
and humor to design. And of course with computers
came the digital revolution.
Hopefully you’ll look further into some of these
design movements. After all, who says Art Nouveau
can’t be used in a digital format, and computer fonts
can certainly recreate ancient calligraphy. Perhaps
graphic designs of the past can help enhance your
own work in original ways today.

Three golden rules for website design
Three Golden Rules for Website Design
#3 Keep Your Website Consistent
Do you want to design your own website, but have no
idea how to begin? If you start by following these three
rules, you should be ahead of the game.
Consistency usually projects a professional image.
Therefore, you want to keep your typefaces, background
effects, graphic elements, headings, and footers the
same on every web page of your site. If you use a special
effect on one heading, then make sure to use it on all
your headings. To create a little variety you can change
the colors on different pages, but otherwise you should
use a uniform style throughout your website.
#1 Make Your Website Easy to Read
Consider the colors of your text and background
carefully. Don’t use flashy backgrounds behind text.
To get the most readable copy, use colors with a high
contrast like black text on a white background or yellow
on dark blue. Then, for your font, keep in mind that serif
fonts (such as Times New Roman) and sans-serif fonts
(Arial and Helvetica) tend to be the most legible.

#2 Make Your Website Easy to Navigate
Think about your target audience. Does it include
people who might not be particularly computer savvy?
Always ensure your hyperlinks stand out clearly. This
doesn’t mean you need flashy effects to draw attention
to them. It simply means that all the navigational
buttons on your site should be easy to find and use.
You can choose to put them in a unique color, a large
font size, or in boldface. If people can’t quickly find
the information they need, then they’ll go to another
website to get it.
