About High-Tech Fishing Lines
FREE Spiderwire EZ Braid An all-new, smooth handling, easy casting super-braid available at an affordable price. Made of high strength Dyneema microfibers that are 3X stronger than monofilament of the same pound test. Available in: • Low-Vis Moss Green: popular for its obscure appearance. Spiderwire Stealth This high-tech superline casts and handles similarly to monofilament due to its Teflon-pressure-treated micro fibers, which keep it smooth and round (to resist digging in on reel spools). Stealth is what I use for most of my fishing. Available in: • Low-Vis Moss Green (popular for its obscure appearance). • NEW Low-Vis Spiderwire Stealth Camo Braid (camo-colored super-line that blends perfectly with underwater environment). • Hi-Vis Yellow (a line you can see and not spook fish when combined with a fluorocarbon leader). Teflon is a registered trademark of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. Spiderwire UltraCast If you want the best, Spiderwire UltraCast is it. I use this Spiderwire when thin diameter and maximum strength are especially critical to success. High pick and carrier count ensures roundness, while the UltraCast patented cold-fusion processing provides its silky-smooth finish (for long casts) and body (to resist tip wrapping). Available in: • Translucent Invisi-Braid: visible crystal above water, less visible below. • Low-Vis Green: popular for its obscure appearance. • Hi-Vis Yellow: a line you can see and not spook fish when combined with a fluorocarbon leader. Spiderwire UltraCast 100% Fluorocarbon Since they are less visible to the fish, I combine the use of leader material when using high-tech superlines. And while monofilament works as leader for much of my fishing, especially for salmon, I recognize the value of using invisible fluorocarbon as leader material when fishing clear water. I’ve found Spiderwire UltraCast 100% Fluorocarbon to be really tough, thin as compared to its strength, abrasion resistant and super sensitive. Microfibers manufactured from Dyneena gelspun Polyethylene is what enables Spiderwire to be stronger than other line types. For example, 6-pound test Spiderwire UltraCast is the same diameter as 1-pound monofilament and will cast 40 to 50 percent further than mono of an equal pound test. Due to Spiderwire high-tech superlines’ having almost zero stretch, they offer increased sensitivity. In addition, Spiderwire floats better than monofilament (great when float fishing for steelhead or salmon) and is more tolerate of line twist, which means it performs excellent when used on a spinning reel. Spiderwire is so advanced that using it can provide both increased strength and thinness. For example, where I once used 25-pound test monofilament for salmon; I now employ 50 or 65-pound test Spiderwire, which is over twice as strong and half as thin as monofilament! For big fish like steelhead, salmon, sturgeon and halibut; I always choose similar to the above example. It’s different when selecting light tests for trout, bass and walleye; where I lean toward the side of thinness – often choosing the same pound test as I would monofilament. High-tech superlines engineered by Spiderwire have evolved since first introduced to where all go through additional processing steps. This is done to provide roundness and body to the line (to resists tip wrapping and digging into the reel spool); to provide color (Hi-Vis, Low-Vis, Camo, or Low-Vis translucent); smoothness (for longer casts); and to seal the line (so it will shed water and float higher). Note, If you intend to fill your reel completely with Spiderwire keep in mind that doing so will require you to first tie and then tape your line to the reel arbor. Tapping is mandatory since not doing so could result in all your line slipping on the reel spool. When this first happened to me, I thought there was something wrong with the drag on my reel. Electrical tape is what I now use, but other heavy-duty tape works too. Another option is to first fill your reel part way with monofilament, splice your superline to it, and then top your reel off with 150 yards of Spiderwire. What I often do is fill my reels completely with Spiderwire and after a season’s use I reverse it. Doing this allows me to get two years worth of line for the price of one. These are the lines I count on for my fishing and guiding success. The next generation of superlines is what Spiderwire is now offering - you’ve got to try them.
