MACHINED REEL SEAT
The Original. A solid is always stronger than two pieces attached together. Also, by
eliminating the screws you’ve eliminated the corrosion points.
B
DIMENSION IN THE FRAME
We machined dimension in the frame to increase rigidity, strength and reduce lateral
flex. With the reel and spool together you get virtually no lateral flex when you push/
pull the two. This means the reel tracks truer and it eliminates the spool wobbling in
high-speed runs.
C
FRAME/SPOOL CONNECTION
Making a positive frame-to-spool connection is essential. On our reels, we call it the
“power flower.” This unique design feature locks both together creating a bomb-proof fit.
D
CRANKS & COUNTERBALANCE
Unlike many manufacturers whose counterbalance is merely cosmetic, we’ve made the
two pieces the same weight to achieve true balance in the spool.
E
DRAG
We wanted it sealed—hence the drag cassette. We’ve employed a multi-disc stack in all
models that is comprised of Rulon® and precision stamped stainless steel discs. With
multi-disc drag , you are applying braking pressure and heat dispersion over several
surfaces rather than one-to-one surface braking on most drag systems today. This
system virtually eliminates start up inertia and stick slip problems.
F
HOOK GUARD
Keep those hooks tucked into the arbor of the reel and out of the way of your hands.
G
MACHINED FINISH
At Hatch we don’t polish our reels. Everyone else does, but we like the machined look.
You can see the witness marks and quality machining. No buff outs or cover-ups. It just
didn’t make sense to cover up what others can’t match. Its more difficult, takes more
time, but it’s worth it.
H
SPOOL TENSION NUT
Designed to be easily taken on and off, with or without full gloves. The nut is press-fit
into the spool so it won’t fall out into the water or your gear bag.

Why
GREAT QUESTION, FOLLOWED AT TIMES
WITH BLANK STARES AND CONFUSION.
For most people out there picking up your roots and
traveling into the unknown is, well, uncomfortable. Nothing
like selling everything you own to see if you can make it
work in another country! Many family holidays are missed,
along with three long-term girlfriends, two jobs and a black
lab. When I look I can only say…holy @$&%. After all that,
there are two things true in my life—steelhead rivers and
tropical flats that hold permit. The latter of which usually
drives me to the brink of insanity and back again.
Still the question remains. Why, with so many different
fish species out there haunting the planet’s waters, would
a kid from British Columbia end up in Belize? It’s a fair
question and one that I’ve heard many times over the
years, most often at airports, or rivers and flats off the
beaten path. What is it about Belize? For me it was an easy
decision. Check that, it was a simple decision and one I
have never regretted.

I’M NOT A SPEY FISHERMAN. THERE, I SAID IT.
WORDS // JOHN TOROK
PHOTOS // JOHN HAZEL
Many years ago, when spey began it’s run of popularity here in the US, I was a bitten hard by the saltwater bug. So much so
that since then my every thought has been consumed by visions of tailing permit and sick grabs from bucket mouthed poons.
During my time in the throes of a full-blown saltwater addiction, the spey craze passed me by. While I’ve always been
intrigued and admired the beauty of spey from afar, I had reservations, albeit unfounded, about why such a method could
produce better results than I’d had in the past with a single hander. Basically, I became one of the guys I dislike the most in any
sporting situation. You know, the guy who’s never done it but has an opinion. And while I've kept up with it's progression on a
professional level, I haven't been involved on a personal level.

PINOT GRIGIO
IGT DELLE VENEZIE
2012
DESCRIPTION: We work with three of the best vineyards for Pinot
Grigio in Friuli. The first vineyard is on the rolling banks of the
Isonzo River, the second is in the hills of the Collio and the
third is in the hills of the Collio Orientali del Friuli. Our grapes
are planted in cooler sites resulting in a wine of balanced
acidity and alcohol. The wine shows that Pinot Grigio can be
light and dry with veins of minerality and floral aromatics.
DENOMINATION: Pinot Grigio IGT delle Venezie 2012
VINE TRAINING: Guyot
VINIFICATION: The grapes are fermented in stainless steel after
being de-stemmed and left on the skins for approximately 12
hours, resulting in a wine with clear and bright aromas and
flavors.
AGING: The wine settles with the lees contact for six months.
APPEARANCE: Light straw color with just a hint of salmon.
AROMATICS: Aromas of white flowers, stone fruits such as
apricots and peach and hints of minerality.
PALATE: On the palate, the wine is crisp and dry with medium
high acidity and tastes of stone fruits, lavender, honey, pear,
white flowers and minerals.
FOOD AND WINE PAIRINGS: This Pinot Grigio is perfect on its
own as an aperitivo or with Prosciutto San Daniele. It is also
wonderful with raw fish, such as sashimi or pesce crudo and is
great with elegant chicken, pork and fish dishes.
