March 1, 2015 - St. John the Evangelist
1 de marzo de 2015 Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma March 1, 2015 Second Sunday of Lent If you drive past any health club early in the morning, most likely you will see a parking lot filled with cars. Those cars belong to people who are attempting to be “transfigured” according to the ways of the world. Even during the season of Lent, the parking lots of churches are not filled in the same way for morning Mass, evening prayer, scripture study, or other disciplines that parishes may be offering. This is not to say that keeping oneself in good physical condition is unimportant (it’s actually a worthwhile component of stewardship of God’s creation), nor does the tale of the empty parish parking lot serve as a means to impose pointless guilt. It serves as a reminder, however, that no “transfiguration” happens without discipline and sacrifice. And the disciplines offered to us by Lent serve to “transfigure” us in more important ways. A careful listening to the readings today will fill our ears with many references to discipline and sacrifice. PETER THE TEACHER Like those who avoid the health club or parish Lenten offerings, Peter today wants to avoid the sacrifice and discipline that both Jesus and his followers would have to follow on the road to Calvary. Peter, particularly in Mark’s Gospel, frequently misses the point. In his own curious way, this makes him one of the best teachers in the New Testament; we learn from his bad example. Most of us would be tempted, in the presence of the glorious, transfigured Christ, Moses, and Elijah, to stay right there and continue the experience as long as possible. But Jesus, functioning as Peter’s spiritual “personal trainer,” so to speak, takes him and the other disciples down from the mountain as he continues his journey to his destiny on Calvary and his ultimate destiny, which we glimpse today— his eternal transfiguration into the glorified, resurrected One. Lecturas de hoy: Gén 22:1–2, 9a, 10–13, 15–18; Sal 116:10, 15–19; Rom 8:31b–34; Mc 9:2–10 Copyright © 2015, J. S. Listen to him.” And listen they did. From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master’s footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, “O Lord, I am your servant,” the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham’s and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking “before the Lord in the land of the living.” As we follow our varied calls to love and serve, let’s be comforted by Paul’s reminder to the Romans: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” From Ashes to Easter, Lenten Boxes Ashes to Easter annual Lenten Mission project has begun. Each family is invited to pick up a special Mission box. You may keep it on or near the dining table in your home. Put in some coins each day during Lent and pray for missions worldwide. Return your Lent box to the parish on Easter. Money collected will help local missionaries and missionary projects from our diocese. ********* Abstinence ALL Catholics (14 yrs of age and older) must observe Abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. ********* STATIONS OF THE CROSS EVERY FRIDAY OF LENT 7:00 PM - ENGLISH DAILY MASS: 8:00 AM ********* AREA LENTEN PENETENTIAL SERVICES ALL HELD AT 7:00 PM ST.
