It was fiendishly hot on Friday – 37oC
(felt like 47oC). I identified strongly with
the agapanthus plants (pictured) that,
with wilted stems, and heliotropic
ambitions abandoned, laid down their
heads upon the paving stones. The
coolest dudes on campus were the
swimmers who could take refuge in the
pool during the Inter-House Swimming
Gala.
The gala entrances were, as always, very entertaining, if a little perplexing in some cases. Knoll led
the pack with an out-of-the-box (literally) 50th birthday surprise. The Ochse force arrived in a police
van to announce, in a cloud of blue smoke, that the revolution had begun. De Beer took a more
military approach and reminded the audience that rites of passage are earned. Murray House
sported black shopping bags on their heads in a fashion statement that can only be referred to as
gallows-chic and claimed that the moral uprising had just begun. Knapp-Fisher danced their way in
while being admonished in elder-statesman tones. And the MacRobert lads, representing Mafia on
fire, dispensed with the flames and enveloped themselves in a pink puff of smoke.
The singing throughout the gala was loud and
strong and proud and Murray emerged as the
winner of the Spirit Trophy. Jason Jenkins’ call
at Assembly for unity – “the Inter-House spirit
should pull us together for Inter-High and not
pull us apart” – was heeded, and this was
clearly seen (and heard) during the singing of
the school song with enough force to rival the
Swedish House Mafia who performed at the
Wild Waters in Boksburg that evening. Talk
about Wild Waters: The events were exciting
and some old records were smashed. The
Ochse House team consisting of Ryan Kennedy, Luke Lagaay, Alan Fitzhenry and Robbie Alexander
won the Open Relay Medley in the record-breaking time of 1.57.71. The same quartet also broke
the Open Freestyle Relay record, completing the race in 1.44.20. What is most remarkable about
this foursome is that they have won and broken records in their relay events every year from their
U15 days in 2010 to their current “open” status. Beat that!
MacRobert won the gala. Alan Fitzhenry and Andre van der Merwe went off with the Senior and
Junior Victor Ludorum awards.
By evening, the theatrical smoke bombs were all used up and the more appetising smoke from the
various House braais wafted through the area adjacent to the pool. The Knapp-Fisher Matrics and
Form 1s stayed on for a sleep-over and the Senior Inter-House Water Polo events played out the
next morning, won by Ochse House.
Journey preparation is well under way. The Form 3 parents attended a presentation about the
Journey to help them better understand the scope and implications of this coming-of-age event in
their sons’ lives.
Des Turton, who plays a leading role in
Journey planning and leading, married his
Sarah in England in December. Despite the
wet and cold conditions of the UK winter,
the couple looked stunning while braving
the elements. We congratulate them on
their marriage and wish them a sunny future
together and the fortitude to endure life’s
occasional storms.
The Headmaster, Mr Tom Hamilton
announced the following appointments:
“Mr Siphiwe Mafereka joins the team as a
Stooge and Residential Tutor. Siphiwe
attended Hilton College where he was Head
Prefect in 2009. He is currently studying
towards a PPE at the University of Pretoria.
He is based in the new Tutor’s Flat in Ochse
House and will add value to the Ochse
House residential team.
Not new, but a new position….
Modise Sefume will take on the role of
‘Head Stooge’ for the coming year. He will
act as co-ordinator and liaison person for all
general assistance roles that involve the
Stooges”.
Richard Motshegwa, who keeps John Tsebe House sparkling, sustained serious injuries when he fell
from a moving bakkie recently. He is recovering well at home and he will undergo further facial
surgery in February. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery.
There was much activity down in the San on Wednesday, the occasion being Wellness Day for staff.
A team of medical professionals measured blood pressure, sugar levels, eye-sight, BMI, etc. It turns
out we have, for the most part, a healthy bunch of educators. And now for some fitness testing...
Dylan Fritelli, who signed with IMG towards the end of last year, came home to College on Sunday to
play for the Old Boys’ Cricket team. He was excited to be back at College, all the more so because he
bowled a maiden over after not playing cricket for 6 years! See the smile on his face (below):
