SUMMER 2016
Chautauqua Lecture Series
Pulitzer’s Prize Turns 100: Celebrating
Connections to Georgia and our Coast
On October 29, 1911, newspaper magnate
Joseph Pulitzer died aboard his yacht in
the Charleston, S.C. harbor. His
destination had been his winter cottage
on Jekyll Island. Several years later,
through an endowment in his will, the first
Pulitzer Prizes were awarded to recognize
excellence in journalism and the arts.
This summer, to celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the Prize, the Society will
explore connections between our state
and the coveted award. In a series of five
programs, scholars and authors will focus
on winners in different categories and the
impact of the Prize. The series will begin
and end with lectures about early
recipients: playwright Eugene O’Neill,
winner of four Prizes for Drama, who lived
on Sea Island for four
years; and Caroline
Miller, 1934 winner
for Fiction, who
paved the way
for Margaret

Georgia residents, will discuss the impact of the award on their careers, and Joseph Pulitzer’s
biographer will tell the story of the ground-breaking publisher.
The series will begin on Thursday, August 11, with “Gene and Carlotta: The Origins of
Eugene O’Neill’s Sea Island Retreat,” a lecture by Dr. Robert M. Dowling, Professor of English
at Central Connecticut State University and author of the acclaimed 2014 biography, Eugene
O’Neill: A Life in Four Acts. In 1932, O’Neill and his actress wife, Carlotta, built a Sea Island
cottage to escape the hectic pace of New York City. While living there, the playwright wrote
his only comedy, Ah! Wilderness. Dr. Dowling, who serves on the editorial board of The
Eugene O’Neill Review and has written a number of books about O’Neill, will discuss this

Coast Guard
Station
If you have driven by the Coast Guard Station recently, you will know that a lot
is happening! Glynn County is in the process of repairing, reroofing, and
painting the buildings, as well as improving the site and ensuring that it
complies with current ADA standards. This represents a county investment of
approximately $400,000.
I
The sidewalks have been removed to make way for walkways that are ADA
compliant in width and grade. We want to provide learning opportunities
throughout the site, which means that easy and safe access is very
important.
I
Additional site work is being completed in coordination with the landscape
architect the Society has engaged to execute a master plan for the site. The
end product over the next 12-15 months will be a beautiful campus at the
entrance to East Beach.
I
After reviewing more than a dozen exhibit design firms, we have contacted
three prominent firms about the World War II Home Front museum. Two of
the firms have developed exhibits for the National WWII Museum in New
Orleans.
I
When the County work concludes in August, the Coast Guard Station will
reopen as before, while the new exhibits are being designed and fabricated.

We look forward to starting the process of planning the exhibits. The more we
research the activities that took place in this area, the more excited we
become about telling the story of the critical role Coastal Georgia played in
winning World War II.

Keepsake Comes Home
The Society recently acquired the early 20th century plate
pictured above. The plate was imported from Germany by
Jonroth Studios, the name used by an American importing
company, John H. Roth & Co. The company was founded in
1909 and imported china from Germany, Japan, and England.
As a label on the back indicates, the plate was sold locally by
Fleming & Bryant, which was located on Newcastle Street,
Brunswick. Fleming & Bryant sold books, postcards, stationery,
fancy glass goods, and hand painted china.
Don’t miss the remaining four
concerts this summer!
