Michael Myatt seeking
re-election to County
Commissioner
By Tom Kuhns
Clark County Gazette
Michael Myatt is running
for the position of Clark
County
Commissioner
– District 1. He is the
incumbent running on the
Democrat ticket.
Myatt has been in his
current office since he was
first elected in 1986.
He has owned and
operated Myatt Funeral
Home in Ashland since 1974
with locations in Buffalo
and Laverne, Oklahoma as
well. Myatt retired and sold
his business recently.
Along with his service
on the Board of County
Commissioners,
Myatt
has been affiliated with
the Ashland Chamber of
Commerce and the Ashland Pride
Committee, as well as other civic
organizations.
Why are you seeking this position?
“I’ve
served
as
County
Commissioner because I wanted
to give something back to the
community,” Myatt stated. “I’ve been
here 40 years and this community has
been very, very good to me. I just
felt like I needed to give something
back.”
“I feel like I’ve done a good job,
and am doing a good job,” he added.

Issue No. 44
Jim Daily challenging to
become County
Commissioner
By Tom Kuhns
Clark County Gazette
“I’m always open to new things. If
we don’t expand things and look at
things outside of the box we’re in
trouble.”
“The counties and the cities, they’ve
always been separate entities, but
we’re going to have to combine those
efforts. I’m not for consolidation,
but we need to work together in areas
that we can.”
What are your qualifications for this
position?

Jim Daily is running
for the position of Clark
County Commissioner. He’s
running on the Republican
ticket.
Daily, a lifetime resident
of Ashland, is a farmer,
rancher, and crop adjuster
for RCIS
As a veteran of the United
States Air Force, Jim served
15 months in southeast
Asia. Currently he is the
Commander of the Ashland
Post of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars.
Has
no
previous
experience
in
local
government, but did run for
County Commissioner in
2010.
Why are you seeking this position?
I have some concerns for Clark
County,” Daily said. “I think some
money has been misspent. I think
instead of moving forward, we’ve
been going backwards. If we don’t
progress a little bit, if we don’t go
forward, we’re going to lose our
schools and some other things around
here.”
“I think we need to take a positive
step and get some businesses in
town.”
What are your qualifications?
“With my experience of being a
crop adjuster I communicate with
commissioners throughout all of
southwest Kansas on a weekly or
monthly basis,” Daily noted. “Most
of them are farmers and ranchers
also.”
“Where I know what’s going on
in other communities, it will help
Ashland, it will help Clark County,”
he added.
Why should people vote for you?

Ashland wins 66-64
shootout over
Fairfield
Insurance Agency
The Ashland High School football team won their final
scheduled home game of the 2014 season last Friday in a 66-64
contest with Fairfield.
The Blue Jays took an early 22-16 lead in the first quarter
and expanded that margin to 40-16 by the half. The Falcons
mounted a comeback in the third period but the ‘Jays held a
66-52 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Fairfield added 12 more unanswered
points but couldn’t overcome Ashland’s lead.
The Blue Jays rushed for 290 yards against the Falcons and
passed for 246 more for 536 yards of total offense.
Kole Konrade led the potent Blue Jay ground attack with 236
yards on 20 carries that netted 4 touchdowns. Elliot White
added another rushing touchdown. He gained 36 yards on 11
carries. Corey McCann gained 18 yards on 6 carries.
McCann was 8 for 18 in passing for 246 yards and 4
touchdowns. Reece Kay was Ashland’s lead receiver with 99
yards on 3 catches for 2 touchdowns. Kole Konrade pulled
down 4 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Walker
also scored a receiving touchdown with a single 65-yard catch.
Tayton Cunningham led in tackles with 10 solos and 8
assists. Corey McCann had 8 solos and 5 assists. Others in
double-digit tackle stats were: Jordan Vierling had 6 solos and
8 assists, Josh Berryman with 5 solos and 8 assists, and Kyle
Hampton with 5 solos and 5 assists.
Other tackle stats were: Luis Ornelas, 1 solo and 2 assists;
Caleb Walker, 4 assists; Hunter Cook, 1 solo; Kole Konrade, 5
solos and 2 assists; Elliot White, 5 assists; Landon Borgelt, 1
assist; Cooper Johnson, 1 solo and 6 assists.
The win over Fairfield placed Ashland’s season record at 3-5.
They stand at an even 2-2 in district – which currently puts
them in third place. District leaders Minneola and Stafford
are both sitting at 4-0 and will play each other this week to
determine district champions and district runners-up.
(On October 11, Ashland lost a close 40-38 game to Stafford.)
The Blue Jays will wrap up their regular season this week
when they are scheduled to travel to Cunningham. The
Wildcats are winless this year. Last week they forfeited their
game with Minneola. An Ashland win over Cunningham will
keep the Blue Jays just out of post-season play with a third
place finish in district.

I am exploring the idea of offering flag football to the 1st and
nd
2 graders in the form of 4 practices this fall. They would be
November the 6th after school starting at 4:30 and then the 8th
starting at 10:00 am. The next week would be the 13th at 4:30
and the 15th at 10:00 am.
I need to know how many are interested and want to play. This will only be offered if we have enough interest to be able
to play games. I will be teaching them about the sport of football, about
teamwork, and having some fun while doing that. They should
not need any equipment to participate.
Please contact me at 785-656-2314 or get with me when you
see me in town. Thanks, Coach Fox

Recently, Ashland Elementary School Principal Jason
Endicott received a $22,000 grant from the Doyle Foundation
in order to help construct new playground equipment in the
playground north of Ashland Elementary School. USD 220
wants to thank the Doyle Foundation for their gift to the
students and community of USD 220.
USD 220 has acquired over $90,000 in new grants since July
of 2014 in order to help students in the community. USD 220
is currently in their second year of their “staff grant writing
campaign”, and the district is seeing great success in student
programs and learning projects all over the district. These
include student learning programs, counseling programs,
reading curricula, afterschool family programing, playground
equipment, and others.
Last year, the district had a goal of acquiring $100,000 in
new grants and donations. This goal was surpassed last school
year since USD 220 gained over $200,000 worth of grants and
gifts by June of 2014. This year, with over $90,000 in new monies already
accomplished, the district is in fine shape to beat last year’s
record of new grants and gifts to the district. USD 220 wishes
to thank the staff and community who are making these extra
programs and projects a reality for the students at USD 220

The Minneola High School football team
racked up their 7th win of the season last week
when scheduled opponents, the Cunningham
Wildcats, forfeited the game.
The win guaranteed Minneola a postseason berth.
The Minneola Wildcats now stand with a
7-1 overall record and a perfect 4-0 district
mark. This Thursday they’ll travel to Stafford
to play for the District Championship.
Stafford, who sports a perfect 8-0 season
mark, also has a 4-0 record in 8-Man Division
II District 5.
In light of their records both teams will
be matched up well for this week’s game
– although Minneola seems to have a slight advantage in the
statistics.
During their 8 games this year, the Trojans have averaged 362
yards of total offense per game and have won by an average score
of 49-20.
During their first 7 games (not including the forfeiture by
Cunningham) the Wildcats have averaged 402 yards of total
offense per game and have won by and average score of 53-19.
Should Minneola come away with a win against Stafford, the
Wildcats will be District Champions and will host the first-round
playoff game on next Tuesday, November 4. Satanta is a likely
opponent.
A Minneola loss would place the Wildcats as district runnersup and have them on the road next Tuesday in the opening round
of play-off action. Most likely, that game would be at Ingalls.
A Tuesday win would put the Wildcats back into action the
following Friday, opponent and location to be determined.
Good Luck at State Cross Country

Good Luck Wildcats!

“My experience,” Myatt
said. “I’ve been at this for

how to work with people. I’ve

“I think my own personal

knowing that errors will occur,
the appeals process should not
focus on how the case should
be overturned; rather it should
be inferred that the trial judge,
prosecutor(s), and jury had
the sincere intent to conduct a
fair and impartial trial. When
errors are found, they should
be weighed against the totality
of the circumstances and
evidence presented against
each defendant. It should then
be determined whether said
error was so detrimental that,
if not for the error, there could
have been a different verdict.
If no such error is found, then
the case should be affirmed
and moved forward to its
conclusion.
In the Kansas Supreme
Court appeals hearing, not
even the Carr brothers’
taxpayer-funded
attorneys
touted
their
innocence.
No matter how many
times anyone looks at the
overwhelming evidence in this
case, the only possible jury
verdict for these two monsters
is guilty. Justice Moritz’s sole
dissenting opinion in this 6-1
appeals decision basically
said the same. The Kansas
Supreme Court agreed that
Judge Clark did not err in his
decision to allow the combined
trial and has upheld a majority
of the convictions. It is only
in the penalty phase, which
is generally more relaxed
and less restrictive than the
trial phase, that they found a
procedural error, ruling that
$25,990
the combined penalty phase
should have been separate
for the brothers. It makes no
sense that the trial phase was
properly allowed to continue
with both defendants being
tried at the same time but that
the penalty phase, under the
same circumstances and with
the same jury, was an error so
detrimental or harmful that it
required vacating the death
sentences for both.
I am appalled the appeal
has taken this long, and that
anyone in the legal field
could look at the vast amount
of evidence presented and
accepted in this case and
determine that any verdict
other than guilty could be
possible. Any re-trial or resentencing is an enormous
waste of time and taxpayer
money, not to mention the
anguish it will cause all the
victims and their families as
they are forced to relive each
and every horrifying detail
of the crime all over again,
twice, because of the separate
penalty phases ordered by the
Kansas Supreme Court.
In the 14 years since
these vicious crimes were
committed, those of us
affected by these two animals
have picked up the pieces
and carried on with our lives.
We have started families and
careers, though all the while
haunted by the possibility
of having to do this all over
again. This decision has left
me no choice but to speak
out.

Lee Johnson are two of the

case. Appointed Kansas
Supreme Court Justices must
face a retention vote every
six years, and both Rosen
and Johnson will be on the
November 4th Kansas ballot.
I urge you to speak out, just
purplewave.com
Dear Editor...
My name is Andy Schreiber.
I am one of two surviving
victims of the Carr brothers’
December 2000 murderous
crime spree in Wichita, KS.
I’ve sat silently for the last
twelve plus years but am now
breaking my silence to share
my thoughts on the recent
Kansas Supreme Court ruling
vacating the death sentences
for both brothers.
The death penalty is a
legally acceptable penalty: It
is not murder. It is a valid and
legal form of punishment that
was voted on and enacted by
the citizens of Kansas. What
the Kansas Supreme Court
has done, not only in the Carr
brothers’ case, but in all other
capital murder cases to date,
is effectively take that penalty
away from the victims and
citizens that re-enacted the
law in 1994. A majority of the
Kansas Supreme Court has
allowed their personal political
views of the death penalty
to cloud their impartiality in
these cases. The reason the
United States Supreme Court
has reinstated several of the
death sentences vacated by
the Kansas Supreme Court is
because these decisions were
legally flawed.
Everyone is entitled to
a fair trial—not a perfect
trial. I challenge anyone to
find a perfect capital murder
trial where no errors were
made, especially a case as
complicated and complex as
this one. With that being said,
