Year 6 Mini Fete
The rain stopped…the sun came out and our Year 6
students created a highly successful mini fete which was
enjoyed by all. There was an abundance of delicious food,
games, raffles and rides – and, of course, the sponge throwing was as popular as ever - particularly when Mr Stevenson
was in the hot seat! Well done to all the entrepreneurial Year
6 students and their dedicated teachers.

Writing Excellence at LEPS
Congratulations to Douglas W (5CM) who has successfully
taken out the prestigious 'Gold Award' in this year's Board of
Studies 'WriteOn' awards.
The annual, state wide, cross sectoral competition promotes
writing through a 500 word narrative, description, recount or
exposition based on a stimulus poster.
Special mention must also be given to Ineke T (3JR ) who was
awarded 'Silver' in the Stage 2 division.
Quality Learning Experiences
Semi retired and former Menindee Central School Principal, Brian Debus kindly relieved as LEPS Principal
this Monday and Tuesday, whilst our executive staff engaged in professional learning and collaborated on
strategic planning for 2014 and beyond.
As part of the learning cycle at LEPS, teachers and school committees evaluate their teaching programs
and whole school management plans annually. This invaluable reflection and feedback has ensured that
LEPS stays strategically on the front foot and continues to attain outstanding educational success. LEPS
students are the beneficiaries of this best practice,
consistently being offered high quality and innovative
learning experiences, from a curriculum that prides
itself on being rich and diverse.
LEPS also asks for a sample of parental feedback via
annual satisfaction surveys. I'd encourage you to respond to an online survey that will be distributed in
the upcoming weeks.
Mr Debus remains an active educator and reflected
proudly during his visit of the success of the LEPS/
Menindee model. This unique learning alliance is now
being replicated between numerous local North Shore
and Western NSW schools.
Thank You Morning Tea—Tuesday 3 December 11.00am
The LEPS staff would like to thank all our wonderful parents, Scripture Teachers and Ethics Teachers for
all their hard work and dedication in 2013. We are fortunate to have so many willing and enthusiastic parents who assist with reading, maths, library, sport, fete, fundraising, canteen, band, uniform shop, Multi-Lit
etc. An invitation will be sent home very soon. Should yours go astray, please feel free to attend so that
we may acknowledge your contributions in 2013.

Ryde Schools Spectacular
Imagine the thrill of performing on the main stage of the world-famous Sydney Opera House! Last Monday night,
the LEPS Year 2 dance group and choir had the opportunity to join with 23 other schools from the Ryde District for
the Ryde Schools Spectacular, which was……..spectacular!!! The concert hall was packed with parents and VIPs
who cheered and clapped as the hundreds of singers, dancers, musicians and actors dazzled the audience with
their talent. Of course, this amazing show was the result of many hours of hard work by students and teachers –
thank you to Miss Alyce Kelly, who prepared the gorgeous Year 2 dancers, and to Miss Michelle Marquet for her
brilliant work with the choir. And well done to all the children who were involved – you were a credit to the school.
These memorable events are part of the rich extra-curricular and co-curricular programs offered at LEPS, and
provide extraordinary learning opportunities which stay with students throughout their lives. I’m sure the children
who took part will never forget their big night on the Opera House stage!
Charity and Civics Education
Public Schools in NSW abide by a set of clearly defined positive values, such as integrity, respect, tolerance and
inclusion. Care and compassion are other values which are built into all our teaching and learning programs and
school events. In this newsletter, there is a report from two Student Representative Council members about the
money raised this week for the Philippines typhoon relief fund. Charity events such as these contribute to children’s
growing awareness of themselves as responsible, caring members of a global community. Civics education is
particularly important in light of the many images of disasters children are exposed to in the media; responding in a
practical way, such as fund raising for a reputable charity, is an outlet for the children’s feelings and helps them to
be more aware of the needs of others. Thank you to all the families who responded so generously to this charity
event, and to the SRC for organising it.

ODD SOCK DAY
On the 19th November the SRC organised an odd socks day to respond to the urgent call for aid in
the Philippines following the devastating typhoon. We decided that the money raised would be donated to UNICEF.
UNICEF is a foundation that helps countries and people around the world in times of disaster. On
this day students at LEPS raised $463.
Many people came wearing all sorts of crazy colours and sizes.

YEAR 6 CLAYMATION
Last week, all Year 6 classes had the opportunity to participate in Claymation. In this workshop, we
learnt what it takes to create an animated short film. We were first introduced to Phil, our instructor,
and the technology we would be using for the next 5 hours. We logged on to the laptops we were given and logged onto the Claymation programme.
Before the filming started, we collaborated with a partner to write a story (with a script) that would last
30 seconds once it was converted into film. We created miniature characters that we made out of clay.
I had a little blue character that was supposed to look like me with a red snapback and blonde hair.
Aaron had a character from a recent video game.
Finally, we were allowed to start filming. In order to do this, each pair was given a very special camera
to take photos which were then automatically uploaded onto our laptops. For every second of film, you
needed to take 5 photos, so this process took quite a while.
The setting for our movie was a school yard, and the characters were me, my teacher and a strange
alien from outer space that didn’t belong. When we finished our video, we had half an hour to add music and sound effects. We then downloaded our movies onto a DVD which we were then able to take
home with us.
It was a great day in the end and we all enjoyed watching each others’ videos.

The Lyrebird Chronicles – Volume 1
The Strange Case of Jasper Rust
Book Launch Thursday 5 December 2013
The wait is nearly over!
In Term 2 this year, a small group of talented Year 5 and 6 students began the
gruelling process of writing a book. Under the mentorship of local author and LEPS
parent, Tony Davis, six students embarked on the challenge of developing, writing
and editing a story worthy of publication. Four budding illustrators joined the team
to bring the text to life until, finally, a novel was born.
In this thrilling adventure, six children from Lyrebird Public School set out on an
excursion in local bush land, only to discover a dastardly plot to destroy their
beloved school. Can six school children and their brave plans foil the evil intentions
of Jasper Rust?
The LEPS community is invited to be part of the excitement by purchasing copies
of the book to share with LEPS students, family and friends. What you will read and
see is entirely the work of our talented LEPS students.
If you would like to purchase a copy of the book please complete the order form
below and return it to the locked box in the front office. The cost of the book is
$15.00.
The first 50 orders will have their book numbered and autographed.

P&C NEWS
SEEKING VOLUNTEERS: The P&C is seeking a new Secretary and a Fundraising co-ordinator for 2014.
These roles are a good way to get involved with school community, and to learn more about our school.
They are also vital to our continued success in fundraising and supporting the great results our kids and
school achieve. All you need is a bit of time… If you are interested in learning more about these roles – or
other ways to help the P&C – please contact Rob Mills or Zanthe Abdurahman on the email address below.
LEPS MARKETPLACE: The LEPS P&C has decided to discontinue the LEPS MarketPlace from 2014
onwards, and we are currently advising the MarketPlace’s business partners of that decision. Thank you
to all the parents, business partners and other members of our community who supported the MarketPlace over the years.
SEEKING ADVICE ON INSURANCE: As a volunteer run non-profit, the P&C does not have regular need
for professional advice. Occasionally, however, questions arise which are best answered by professionals, and at the moment we would like some advice on the various insurance options we have. If you are a
parent or carer who is an insurance specialist, or perhaps a lawyer who understands insurance, it would
be appreciated if you could spare an hour or so for a chat and a chance to pick your brains. Please contact Rob Mills if you are willing and able.
