Tour Dates 2014 - Lindfield East Public School
Term 1—Week 4 20 February 2014 Lindfield East Public School PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Andrew Stevenson Pink Stumps Day Tomorrow's first round of PSSA sport will have Ku-ring-gai public schools dressed in pink and supporting the annual 'McGrath Foundation' fundraiser. All the boys and girls participating in Modball and Cricket against Roseville Public School will once again get into the pink spirit. Pink pads, pink stumps, pink shoelaces, pink wristbands, pink caps and pink balls will all be part of this fun and charitable event. Our school leaders have collected hundreds of gold coins from parents at drop off and pick up time. If you'd like to donate, a ‘pink donation box' is set up in the front office foyer. Welcome Back Night 2014 Friday 21 February 5:30pm - 8:30pm Nathan C Book at www.trybooking.com/70068 Specialised Religious Education (SRE) and Specialised Ethics Education (SEE) at LEPS A big thank you to all the SRE teachers who have volunteered once again this year. SRE lessons commenced last week, with all teachers and students enjoying themselves in their new surroundings. We are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated and experienced group of volunteers to deliver the SRE and SEE programs. In order to allow teachers to develop a rapport with the students, and to ensure continuity in their programs, we advise that enrolments in SRE classes are now closed for the year. Thank you to Eleanor Macintyre, who has kindly accepted the role of Ethics Coordinator for our school. We hope that the SEE volunteers will be trained and ready to implement Ethics programs in the 3-6 in Term 2. Keep an eye out for more information as it comes to hand. All students in Kindergarten were assessed by their class teacher and individual feedback was provided to parents at the Kindergarten Information evening. Literacy and Numeracy parent guides can be accessed from the Best Start website. http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/beststart/parents.htm Translated parent guides for Literacy and Numeracy are available in 34 languages. Literacy: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/languagesupport/documents/best_start/ literacy.php Numeracy: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/languagesupport/documents/ best_start/numeracy.php Tilsley’s Training and Tasty Tips It seems obvious, but I would like to stress the importance of having a healthy breakfast before school. You can see when a child hasn't had enough food or it has been a long time since they last ate, as their energy and concentration levels are low. This is more prevalent in younger students, especially Kindergarten. Primary children are equally guilty of poor timing skills with their eating habits. Think about the timing when your child sits down to eat. Try to avoid having breakfast when they wake up, it could be 4 hours before eating again at recess. Let them work up an appetite and then eat nearer the time you are leaving for school without it being a rush. Don't forget the Swimming carnival two weeks away on Monday the 3 rd of March and the zone carnival 3 days later on the 6 March. I hope everyone is training hard! Also, for all those keen runners, cross country is not far off either, only 7 weeks away. 2km for the juniors and 3 kms for the seniors. It seems like a long way but if you gradually build up from 400m you will be amazed at how quickly you improve. A good opportunity for parents to get out with their child to do some physical activity! K-2 Organisation Many thanks to parents who attended the Kindergarten and Stage 1 Parent Information evenings this week. The children have settled into their class routines and the teachers appreciated the opportunity to explain class routines and programs. The children are looking forward to Welcome Back Night, this Friday 21 February from 5.30pm. The SRC reps from Year 2 to 6 will be ‘kicking off’ the evening by releasing colourful balloons! Congratulations to all the newly elected Year 2 SRC representatives. Don’t forget to submit your entry along with a gold coin donation to The Welcome Back Night colouring competition K-2 and Art Competition 3-6. The winners will have their entry displayed in the Lyrebird. App of the Week Read Me Stories—Children’s books This free app offers a new book every day to develop a child’s love for books and to read daily. Features include: ✔ Text highlights as read in 'Read to Me' mode ✔ Read the books yourself in 'Read Myself' mode ✔ Touch the characters to explore further story lines ✔ A full library of children’s stories Access the school website to view a list of all the apps. http://www.lindfielde-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/curriculum-activities/technology/mobile-devices DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Diane Read Stage band 2014 Do you have a passion for playing funky music? Do you want to be a part of a group which encourages creativity, fun and challenging music? We are calling on all talented musicians in grades 4, 5 or 6 to audition for the LEPS 2014 Stage Band. The auditions will commence in Week 5 in the Science room. Students will be notified of their individual audition time. A prepared piece (chosen by the student), improvising and simple sight reading will be included in the audition. Students and families should be aware that by committing to this group, it is possible that another child may have missed out. Students selected to be members of the stage band will be expected to attend all rehearsals and performances, be role models in and out of the school, practice regularly, and always be prepared for rehearsal. The group will meet once a week during a lunch time. Please clearly write your name, class and the instrument that you play on the notice in front of 6CL. The group performs at several functions throughout the year including (but, not limited to) the New South Wales School Band Festival (August), Ryde Spectacular (October) and other school performances. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanking you, Mr MacDonald LEPS 2013 Stage Band Rehearsing with KHS Students DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Rachel Watkins Professional development: Mathematics As part of LEPS’ commitment to constantly improving teacher quality, the staff meeting this week was devoted to developing teachers’ knowledge, understanding and skills in mathematics. Dr Catherine Attard from the University of Western Sydney led a discussion on the implementation of the new K-10 Mathematics syllabus for NSW and inspired staff with many stimulating and rich mathematics tasks. Dr Attard is one of LEPS’ academic partners who has done a tremendous amount of research in mathematics, particularly in the field of children’s deep engagement with meaningful tasks and activities that draw together many mathematical concepts. She has published several books on this topic and was able to present ideas and resources to refresh and enrich teachers’ repertoire of mathematics tasks for children at all stages. Time was then provided for individual teachers to discuss their maths programs with her, which also proved very beneficial. There is a plethora of evidence which suggests that improving teacher quality has the greatest impact on student outcomes, and we’re fortunate here at LEPS to have experts, such as Dr Attard, working with us to constantly ensure that the children are receiving the best possible education under the guidance of our outstanding teachers. LEPS Classifieds Don't forget to consider utilising the LEPS Classifieds. If you're looking to sell or give away something from around the house, why not start by advertising within the school community. For more information ask Debbie Dukino (Administration Officer) or check out the display cabinet opposite the front office foyer. Koalas scientific name is Phasclarctos Cinereus. People also might know that they are social animals. When koalas are scared they make a sound like a baby’s cry. Koalas were hunted until 1920’s, after which the Government was forced to protect them. By Madeleine and Kiana Koalas were allowed to be hunted until the 1902’s but then the Government was forced to protect them. The Koalas fingerprint is very similar to a human fingerprint it can be confused in a crime scene. When a koala is a size of a peanut it is called a pinkie. People have seen koalas swimming. Koalas mark trees to communicate. By Ellie and Alannah Koalas are not bears. When they are born they are the size of a jellybean. They don’t need to drink because they get the moisture from the gum leaves. When Koalas become upset and worried by loss of their homes they may get a disease. Koalas have similar fingerprints to humans. By Max & James A koala can run as fast as a rabbit. The koala cub is born alive. Over 2 million koalas were killed between 1908 and 1927. The koala’s nickname is native bear. After one month the koala is 1cm. By Nicholas and Jesse P&C NEWS NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the P&C – and the first general meeting for 2014 – will be on 11 March 2014, at 7:30 pm in the staff room. Meetings finish no later than 9:30 pm. All parents and guardians are welcome to attend. Membership requires a one-off donation of $1 to the P&C’s general funds, and entitles you to vote. Members are also welcome to propose motions or suggest agenda items for discussion. In order to provide proper notice, proposed motions and agenda items are published in the Lyrebird two weeks prior to the meeting, so advice should be sent to the P&C by 26 February 2014. Items received after that date will not be on the agenda for 11 March 2014, but may be on the agenda for later meetings. The P&C can be contacted at lepspandc@gmail.com. Individual committees have their own email addresses, visible on the website. Meetings are a great opportunity to meet other parents, learn about our community and share concerns. Please consider attending. I promise you will not be drafted into any position.
