Vol. 15. No.5. May - 2015 Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan KARNATAKA News CROWNING GLORY FOR CELESTIAL SINGER Hon’ble minister for Urban Development, Sri Ambarish honouring Dr. K.J. Yesudas and Smt. Prabha Yesudas. While Smt. Sumalatha Ambarish, Dr. B. Saroja Devi, Sri. H.N. Suresh, Director, BVB and Sri. N. Ramanuja, Chairman, BVB, look on. His voice matches his equally youthful looks, the silken touch and velvet tenor of his vocals only having seasoned over the decades to make his music sublime. He is one singer who has experimented with different kinds of music, but retained the authenticity and flavour of every genre, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road, Bengaluru - 1. Tel.: 2226 7303, 2226 5746. Fax : 2228 7373 ensuring that there is no admixture either. The purity of his music lies as much in maintaining the originality of the form as in his rendering, making Kattassery Joseph Yesudas a top performer who draws packed audiences even after five decades of being a performer. Saroja Devi National Award 2015, instituted by the multi-lingual cine artiste herself, lending the award the extra sheen of recognition of an ace artiste by another equally renowned one. After all, Padmabhushan Dr. B. Saroja Devi was both a star and an actress, having acted with top heroes in the South, while yet maintaining her individual screen presence. DR. B. SAROJA DEVI AWARD - 2015 Bhavan, the function, on April 11, at its premises, had the glamour and glitter of a cine event, while not taking away from its sobriety. What is true of a visual performing art such as dance is equally true of music—mano dharma becomes anathema to the artiste if he/she does not have that strength of character. This truism was reflected in Yesudas’ acceptance speech when he Routed through the Bengaluru Kendra of the Bharatiya Vidya Dr. B.Saraoja Devi honouring Smt. Sumalatha Ambarish and Sri. Ambarish. 2 Dr. K.J. Yesudas receives Dr. B. Saroja Devi National Award along with his wife Smt. Prabha Yesudas holy books. What he spoke on stage rang true, as the artiste has lived a transparent life, where his value systems have transformed his music into an experience of another realm. stressed that there is only one God for humankind. His declaration that “we are humans first and I am a Bharatiya” was more a statement of his life philosophy, which he has lived and shown by example, than being mere rhetoric. The singer, who has never worn his religion on his sleeve, said that the Upanishads encompass all the teachings contained in the world’s With humility, he attributed his success to his parents, particularly his musician father, who had impressed upon him to learn Carnatic music, and refrain from taking to politics. The award carries a purse of Rs. one lakh and a citation. Karnataka Housing Minister Dr. Ambareesh, a fellow cine artiste, while giving the award made a pertinent point when he said that Yesudas had earned his “WE ARE HUMANS FIRST AND I AM A BHARATIYA” 3 Dr. B. Prabha Yesudas, Sumalatha Ambareesh, B. Saroja Devi, H. N. Suresh, Kendra Director, and N. Ramanuja, Kendra Chairman, were among those present at the function. 4 The Bengaluru Kendra of TO SIR the Bhavan has made forays into the visual art of cinema, organizing seminars and film screenings of socially relevant films, bringing into its ambit the celluloid world as an instrument of meaningful mass communication. Branching into the allied art of painting, the Kendra organized a first-of-itskind event—a thematic painting on a vast canvas by dozens of artistes, on one of the greatest sons of India—Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. WITH LOVE painting art dealt with an unconventional theme, and all this was done in the sylvan surroundings of Century Club, founded by Visvesvaraya himself. Century Club, situated amidst the green canopy of Cubbon Park, was host to this landmark event, got up by it to mark 100 years of its existence. The club is akin to none other. Its beginnings are hoary. The Bangalore Club of then did not allow Indians into it. In every which way, it was a unique event—it was the first art camp held with Visvesvaraya as the theme, thirty artistes painted on acrylic on a 100-foot canvas, Tanjore and Mysore traditional Artists camp “Bharataratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya as theme” was inaugurated by guests and Century Club Managing Committee members. 5 Sri. H.N. Suresh, Director, BVB, giving final touch for portrayal of Sir M. Visvesvaraya points are its lush surroundings and a well-equipped library. Sir Visvesvaraya sought land from the Wodeyars, to establish a club for his countrymen, especially for government officials, as a recreation centre, and the Century Club was established. Film music has taken over as a major form of live shows. This has been at the cost of traditional forms such as bhaava geethe and sugama sangeetha. Natya geethegalu, once an integral part of theatre, has also moved into oblivion. While some arts cannot be resurrected, they can still be kept alive through performance opportunities for those who are already into it. Once such artiste is Gajanana Vishvanatha Hegde, who will sing ranga geethegalu on Friday, May 8, at the Bhavan, at 6 pm. MAY 8, 9, & 16. Neenasam of Heggodu, learnt Hindustani vocal from Pandit Venkatesh Kumar and Pandit M. G. Patavardhan, and is a central government scholarship holder for studying Kannada theatre songs. The rare music concert, with its share of dramatic content, will be a journey down memory lane for those who have witnessed theatre of yore, and a novel experience for the uninitiated. This thoughtful recital is being presented under the G.V. Bhave and Lakshmi Bhave Endowment Programme got up by Ubhayagana Vidushi Shamala G. Bhave, Vageesh Bhat, and M.V.K. Swamy. Hegde, a familiar newsanchor on Kannada television, is an artiste of many hues. He has trained in theatre from the famed Zeer Boom Ba.......
