What’s new this year, however, is our ability to relate these accomplishments back to the strategic directions articulated in Strategic Vision 2015 and Beyond, a foundational document approved by the University’s Board of Governors in January 2011. This Vision was built over the past three years through a wide range of information-gathering, consultation, and dialogue processes involving the University’s stakeholders. A With Strategic Vision 2015 and Beyond as the framework, St. Jerome’s University commits to continuing initiatives in the areas in which we currently excel, as well as in targeted areas where we want to grow or where there are new directions for us to embark upon. By adopting this Vision, the Board of Governors has set the course for the next several years. It is this document that will guide us as we move toward our sesquicentennial anniversary in 2015. Louis Funcken, CR, in a cabin on the outskirts of St. Agatha, Ontario. Seven students were enrolled. 1889 St. Jerome’s moved to a new building in the village of Berlin (now Kitchener) where 33 students were enrolled. 1908 After several expansions, a new addition was added that became a Berlin (now Kitchener) landmark. 1953 St. Jerome’s College opened its Kingsdale site where it was home to 190 students. 1962 St Jerome’s University moved to its new home on the campus of the University of Waterloo. 2015 Will see a re-visioning of St. Jerome’s University’s physical campus for the 21st century. hile our locations have changed and our student numbers have expanded, what hasn’t changed are the principles that guide us: (1) continue to deliver on who we say we are as a primarily undergraduate Catholic liberal arts university federated with the University of Waterloo; (2) graduate students who: have the skills to meet the ethical and moral challenges of modern life; foresee challenges and opportunity, especially those related to issues of justice, within the communities to which they belong; anticipate the global impact of decisions made today that will influence the shape of the future. 4 “Strategic Vision 2015 and Beyond speaks to our principles and establishes five strategic directions.” Maintain our place as a premier undergraduate Catholic liberal arts university in Canada i. recruit and retain exceptional faculty who are able to achieve excellence primarily in teaching and student engagement, but who are also actively engaged in research and publication; ii. offer programs and courses that are relevant to society and our mission while maintaining a commitment to a classic liberal arts education, and interdisciplinarity; iii. develop SJU’s unique contribution to Mathematics at the University of Waterloo; iv. invigorate our commitment to undergraduate Catholic studies; v. explore the option of launching another graduate program unique to St. Jerome’s University; vi. live our commitment to social justice by ensuring that the complete St. Jerome’s University academic and student life experience can be realized by more students who have the academic ability but lack the financial resources. 5 S T R AT EGIC V I SION 2 0 15 A N D B E YO N D Confirm our place within various Catholic communities regionally, nationally, and internationally i. fully develop deep and collaborative partnerships within Catholic circles both locally and regionally as well as across the dioceses of Hamilton and Toronto; ii. utilize the network of post-secondary Catholic universities and colleges in Canada and abroad to support our mission and raise awareness of the importance of Catholic education; iii. diversify the St. Jerome’s University student body by making SJU a top choice for international students seeking a complete undergraduate liberal arts or Mathematics education. Enhance Relationships with Our Alumni i. revitalize our Alumni Association so that through collaboration with our Advancement Office it can represent and connect with those who have experienced the St. Jerome’s difference; ii. use events and activities as an effective way to build ongoing connections among and with our alumni, donors, and friends; Statue of Fr. Funcken, CR, founder of St. Jerome’s 6 iii. take every opportunity to profile, highlight and celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni. “St. Jerome’s University is dedicated to the fundamental task of educating the whole person.” Enhance Relationships with External Communities I. encourage our faculty and staff to act as ambassadors for the University through their considerable service, volunteer commitments and community outreach; ii. work with Board members to promote, profile and expand the St. Jerome’s University brand outside of established channels; iii. strategically market international service learning and exchange programs for students; iv. develop opportunities and support alumni in their efforts to share their SJU experience for the benefit of all. Supportive Infrastructure – Re-vision Our Physical Campus for the 21st Century i. re-design, through construction and renovation, our current facility to ensure that the best possible student, teaching, and collaborative spaces required for effective learning and research can be realized; Professor Toni Serafini, Sexuality, Marriage & Family Studies in a seminar class with students ii. enhance our Library with a learning commons able to meet the study, research, and collaborative learning needs of our students and faculty; iii. further develop the residence program and the overall quality of the residence experience by revitalizing our housing facilities; iv. thoughtfully plan and develop the student social spaces required to enhance the student experience, student engagement and thus continue to fulfill our promise to educate the whole person. 7 A PR EMIER U N DE RG R A DUAT E C AT HOLIC LI BE R A L A RT S U N I V E R SI T Y tudent Natalie Dewan, 18, has truly embraced the St. Jerome’s experience and exemplifies what it means to be a student of St. Jerome’s University. Recent recipient of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s award, Natalie was recognized in May 2011 for her achievements in the categories of physical fitness, community service, skill development and adventurous journey. And her commitment to learning and leadership is clear as she continues her studies in her second year of English at SJU, also taking on roles with the Residence Life Team and as SJU Ambassador. Natalie credits the focus at St. Jerome’s of educating the whole person through developing their leadership skills, exploring ethical, social responsibility and justice issues, with helping to fuel her passion for volunteerism and community service. S “When I chose a university it was important to choose a place with a strong community, as well as high-quality academics - St. Jerome’s is definitely that place! In first year, I learned a lot both in and out of the classroom - making lifelong friends, and getting involved in every way possible. SJU’s amazing residence and academic programs allow each and every student to develop as a whole person. I certainly feel that it has changed my life for the better and I know countless others who feel the same way.” Natalie Dewan being congratulated by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston Our leadership strengths lie not only with our students, but with our professors who continue to win accolades for academic excellence. Dr. Steven Bednarski (History) and Dr. Ted McGee (English) were named two of the University of Waterloo’s four 2011 distinguished teachers and were honoured with the Distinguished Teacher Award in recognition of a continued record of excellence in teaching. 8 “Master of Catholic Thought offers a high quality learning experience, and fosters excellence in critical thinking.” n spring 2011, six years after the first students were admitted, the Master of Catholic Thought (MCT) program underwent its first academic review. The reviewers concluded that “the program offers a high quality learning experience”, and “fosters excellence in critical thinking in oral and written expression, research skills, and a fine integration of theory and praxis”… ”Students manifested a confident ability to think theologically, and a mastery of the breadth and depth of the Catholic intellectual tradition in an ecumenical, inter-faith context”. We do this through the associations in which we belong, our partnerships with various Catholic service organizations, local school boards and other community partners, and through the events we hold which celebrate our episcopal leaders. P David Perrin, President, with the Most Reverend Bishop Anthony Tonnos, 2010 Bishop’s BBQ at St. Jerome’s University In fostering these relationships, St. Jerome’s University’s current President, David Perrin, provides regular updates to our community partners through twice-annual progress reports to the approximately 365 clergy and other religious agents in the Diocese of Hamilton, participates in pulpit exchanges and guest sermons at various local and regional parishes, and serves as guest speaker at organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Malta, Serra Club, and the Catholic Women’s League. As a member of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities of Canada (ACCUC), St. Jerome’s University participates with the other executive heads of Canadian Catholic institutions in promoting and serving as a voice for Catholic higher education in Canada. In August 2010, President Perrin initiated discussions with other Catholic post-secondary institutions on developing a strategy for securing long-term infrastructure funding support at the provincial level. One of the highlights of the year at St. Jerome’s University is the annual Bishop’s BBQ, where local clergy, and other religious agents are invited to join our faculty, staff and student leaders in honouring our episcopal leaders. It is also an occasion to thank all for participating and supporting our Catholic mission in the wide range of ways we all contribute to the same goals in our Catholic ministries. 10 “Atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship... academic education made possible through exceptional faculty.” Simone Sweeting (BA ’10) imone Sweeting, an international student from the Bahamas, knew St. Jerome’s University was right for her when she read about the St. Jerome’s Advantage. Working as an English Language Assistant in France, she knew she wanted to attend university in Canada and began her research to find her ‘home-away-from-home’. Once she learned about St. Jerome’s academic benefits and small-campus feel, the decision was an easy one. “St. Jerome’s University was a fit for me, with its friendly and culturally diverse campus”. She wanted to find a close-knit community, with many opportunities to live and learn together. S “The weather isn’t so great – but the atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship and the academic education made possible through exceptional faculty made that easier to manage,” Simone shares. Simone Simone Sweeting, (BA, Hons French, 2010) at fall graduation lived in residence for two years and was registered academically in Honours French at SJU. As an international student, finding a place where you feel at home is critical in succeeding at university. For Simone, SJU offered a place where participating in activities and events was encouraged to ensure students felt welcomed and included – and helped motivate and encourage her to be able to step into a leadership role. Each student is supported and valued as a member of the SJU community – and that’s something that makes SJU a top choice for students away from home. Simone graduated from St. Jerome’s University in October 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Honours French and has returned home to Nassau where she hopes to continue teaching French, while pursuing her certification in translation in January 2012, followed by her Master’s in French Linguistics and Literature. 11 OUR A LUMNI The Father Norm Choate, C.R., Distinguished Graduate Award Winners Dr. David Morrell (2011) Fr. Jerome’s alumni are recognized for their outstanding contributions to their professions and their communities. They also continue to contribute to the University campus as they celebrate their history with St. Jerome’s University. S The Fr. Norm Choate, C.R., Distinguished Graduate Award is presented annually to a St. Jerome’s graduate who has distinguished her-or-himself in professional and community life. In 2011, the award was presented to Dr. David Morrell (BA ’66). Dr. Morrell joined alumni and friends at St. Jerome’s University, where he was honoured for his career as an award-winning author of more than 30 books. His message was simple – that the St. Jerome’s community provided a solid foundation for his career. His academic studies with professors such as Dr. Laurence Cummings and his friendship with fellow English students, gave him the support he needed during his time at St. Jerome’s and he fondly reflected on his beginnings as an SJU English graduate in 1966. Dr. Morrell’s first novel, First Blood, featured the character John Rambo, which spawned the movie Rambo starring Sylvester Stallone. There are more than 18 million copies of his work in print, and his books have been translated into 26 languages. Dr. David Morrell now lives in New Mexico with his wife, Donna (BA ’65) – also a SJU graduate. David Morrell and David Perrin “The reunion was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate SJU’s 145-year history and connection with the Congregation of the Resurrection.” n July 2010, 75 men who attended St. Jerome’s in the 1950s and 1960s returned to celebrate their connections with one another and with the University at the St. Jerome’s/Resurrection Reunion. I Organizers John Mudd, John Devine and Tom Sexton undertook the challenge of connecting with fellow alumni and inviting them back to campus for the reunion. The St. Jerome’s campus enjoyed the lively presence of the men and their wives who travelled back to Waterloo, primarily from their homes in the United States, to fondly remember their time together and the time they spent at St. Jerome’s University. Most of the attendees were seminary students at Resurrection College who studied at St. Jerome’s when it was located at the Kingsdale campus in Kitchener. The reunion was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate SJU’s 145-year history and connection with the Congregation of the Resurrection. This group of alumni embody the mission of St. Jerome’s University. The SJU Alumni Advisory Group is redefining its involvement with St. Jerome’s University by fostering new opportunities beyond social events for the alumni community to contribute to the lives of others (e.g. mentoring students, helping recruit students, developing international opportunities). We want to offer alumni ways to get involved with SJU that bring growth and learning opportunities, help them stay connected and passionate about SJU, and also help further the mission of St. Jerome’s University. Reunion organizers (left-to-right) John Devine, Tom Sexton and John Mudd 13 R E -V I S ION I NG OUR CA MPUS oted in last year’s President’s Report, in spring 2010, the Board of Governors took another step toward securing the future of St. Jerome’s University through its approval of the 2015 and Beyond Campus Master Plan Proposal… a campus master plan that can accommodate the long-term needs of SJU and ensure that its mission can be realized. Among many other exciting designs, the concept plan envisions a Library redeveloped and expanded to provide a more inviting, contemporary student work/study space, additional progressive and flexible teaching and learning spaces, sizeable hospitality and interactive community spaces, and a Student Hub. N Since the Board’s approval of the concept plan, much work has been done in preparation of producing a detailed financial plan to enable the realization of the campus renewal plan. This work is expected to be completed in early 2012. 14 ST. J E ROM E’S U N IVE RSIT Y 2010 - 2011 BOARD OF GOVE RNORS Peter Naus, Chancellor David B.
