3H Photo Newsletter 8, March 2016 The third graders not only have "March Madness" for basketball but for learning as well. Go team third grade! During March the third graders worked on researching and writing a persuasive essay about the CRS Rice Bowl program. This project integrated both language arts and religion. The third graders learned that to persuade readers, they need to inform, convince, and call to action the readers. The third graders also learned that as Christians, we are called to missionary work. The third graders learned that because of the almsgiving of Catholics in the United States, Catholic Relief Services is able to minister to millions of people who are in need. Lent is a time when Catholics are called to use money saved during fasting to help CRS. The third graders learned that a little donation goes a long way to help many people for a life time. As always, reading comes second only to our study of Jesus. The third graders are doing a little side by side reading in their science text. The third graders know that scientists use their skill of reading more than any other skill. Some third graders wonder what crazy fun learning activities will come out of this reading on energy. The third graders take a well-deserved reward recess to celebrate some great behavior. A couple of happy third graders use their knowledge of basic facts to explore some challenge work. Some third graders enjoy "Daily 5" time. Here the third graders make targets. Some third graders question why they are making targets. Something fun must be ahead. Tada, the energy of motion lab. The third graders used highly sophisticated scientific tools (a.k.a. rubber bands) to learn about stored energy, the energy of motion, and the transfer of energy. St. Patrick taught the Irish about the Holy Trinity by using a shamrock. The third graders used shamrocks to learn about the Trinity, Lent, and other things that come in groups of three. The third graders enjoyed an example of a persuasive presentation about Big Foot from guest speaker, Luke H. Many of the third graders read a book call Myth or Mystery that talked about Big Foot. Both third grades joined together to enjoy Darby O' Gill and the Little People. The third graders studied the plot, identified Catholic images, and learned about some Irish folklore in this show. After the show all enjoyed some Irish soda bread. A big thanks to Mrs. Lorrig for baking the soda bread fresh for the third grade. The soda bread was a wonderful treat. This is what happens when you try to catch a leprechaun. Ian the leprechaun loves to play by messing up things if you try to catch him. However, he did reward the third graders with a chocolate gold wrapped coin. If you play with a leprechaun it is your responsibility to clean up his mess. Look where these two trappers found their trap. This trap was found squished under the desk. The third graders joined their first grade buddies to learn about the Stations of the Cross. The third graders set a great example for their buddies. After the study was over, the third and first graders prayed the Stations of the Cross together. Good reverence was shown by all. Great job! Happy faces wait for the start of the Fox Valley Youth Symphony program at the P.A.C. The symphony is almost ready to begin. It is time for some more challenge work. In this photo, some third, fourth, and fifth graders gather to correct brackets for the "Third Annual St. Margaret Mary March Madness Bracket Challenge." Organizational skills are needed by the "Bracket Challenge Committee." The third graders prepare here for another round of the Sees Behind Trees four senses game. In this photo, the third graders enjoy reading Sees Behind Trees. This is a great book to challenge the third graders to use all their reading skills to comprehend, not just read, a complex story. The third graders have been enjoying the Junior Achievement program in social studies. These third graders prepare for an activity about levers and fulcrums. Here is another lever and fulcrum. The third graders are trying to use the simple machine of a lever and fulcrum to shoot a science manipulative (a.k.a. Skittle) at their energy of motion targets.
