Perhaps God heard your mother’s prayer and then you refrained from being a wayward child. Or perhaps you were a sick child with a high temperature and your mother prayed fervently through the night as she held your hand until healing finally arrived. Or perhaps your mother prayed endlessly until you came home safely that first night when you drove the family car on your own. A mother’s prayers on behalf of a child provide us all with valuable insights that can shape our own prayers as well. Her petitions are never self-centered, but always oriented toward others. Her conversations with the Lord demonstrate that she can’t make in on her own because she relies heavily upon him each day to provide much-needed guidance, patience, strength and love. And the frequency of her prayers illustrates that we are to be persistent with our prayers to the Lord. Mother’s Day is May 11th. An appropriate way to honor our mothers is to offer up prayers for them. I invite you to utilize the first or second prayer below as a tribute to your mother. And if you are a mother, please continue your prayers for your children and perhaps even utter the third prayer that’s listed. For a Mother who has died Dear Lord, relying on your promises to us, I trust that my mother is with you and that she’s now enjoying your loving embrace. You alone know how she loved the best she could and how she faithfully endured the struggles that she faced. You know the graces you gave her and you know the grace she was for me and for so many. For all the ways she truly loved the way you loved her, please look upon her you’re your favor, Lord. May she enjoy fellowship with all her family and friends who now rest in you. Lord, I know my mother still loves us who are still here on earth. I ask you that you might listen to her fervent prayers for us. Help me to grow into a new and deeper relationship with my mother now, as I long for the day when we will both meet in your embrace freed from all that might have hindered our relationship on earth, knowing and understanding everything we did not know or understand on this earth. I ask you this with faith in the resurrection, trusting my mother's love, and desiring that she knows my love for her. Amen. A Mothers' Day Prayer I thank you, Creator of us all, for my mother. I thank you that she gave me life and nurtured me all those years. She gave me my faith, helping me to know you and to know Jesus and his ways. She taught me how to love and how to sacrifice for others. She taught me that it was okay to cry and that I should always tell the truth. Bless her with the graces she needs and which you want to give her today. Help her to feel precious in your eyes today and to know that I love her. Give her strength and courage, compassion and peace. Bless her this day with your love. Amen A Mother’s Prayer Lord, give me strength just for today To lead my children in your way; Oh, give me wisdom, Lord, and grace To show to them your precious face! And help me, Lord, to teach them, too, The things of Christ so rich and true, Just let them see in me, dear Lord, Your holiness in life and word. Keep me from sinning with my tongue, From harsh, quick words that might have stung. Their tender hearts that trust me so And watch to see which way I go. Dear Father, keep my thoughts so pure That they will always know for sure My Lord has lead me all the way, Lord, grant my prayer just for today. Amen Have a Happy Mother’s Day! Pastor Houck COUNCIL UPDATE Submitted by Carolyn Heffner, Secretary The congregational council met on Tuesday April 8, 2014. Below are the highlights of that meeting: The air conditioning system in the lower level is completely installed and operating properly. East Penn Storage, the new owners of the storage facility where the church currently has a storage unit, informed us that effective May 1st we will have to start paying a monthly rental fee of $159 per month. The movie will be shown downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring a snack to share; coffee and lemonade will be provided. (Amazon.com synopsis) □ Actors: Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks, Paul Giamatti □ Rated: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested) □ Run Time: 125 minutes □ Average Amazon Customer Review: 4.4 out of 5 stars The Herald Saving Mr. Banks is a fascinating look at the circuitous "collaborative" process Walt Disney, his creative team, and author P.L. Travers engaged in in bringing the character Mary Poppins to life on the big screen in the early 1960s. This touching, funny film is really two stories nicely tied up in one appealing package. The first story is of P.L. Travers's childhood in Australia in the early 1900s. This story starts out idyllically enough, emphasizing her father's immense love for his children and his uncanny ability to make every- 4 thing fun and exciting, but it's one that has a darker side that ends up shaping the adult that Travers eventually becomes. The other story is of the adult Travers. A proper Englishwoman completely set in her ways, she grudgingly embarks on a trip from England to LA to discuss the possibility of turning her highly successful book Mary Poppins into a Disney motion picture. Walt Disney has a vested personal interest in the project, but Travers and the Disney team clash on virtually every level and their interactions run the gamut from perplexing to infuriating and downright funny. The union of the two stories is quite masterful, with the stories continually intertwining and each shedding light on the other to create a cohesive film that is engaging and emotionally poignant. Tom Hanks as Disney and Emma Thompson as Travers are perfect in their roles. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about this film is that it creates a whole new perspective from which to view the beloved original Mary Poppins. --Tami Horiuchi May 2014 ROCKING HORSE PRESCHOOL Submitted by Mrs. Woods and Mrs. Raudenbush WOW! This school year has flown by! It’s crazy to think that in just a few short weeks we will be getting ready for our end of the year celebration and graduation. Looking back to last month, we visited Snapology for our spring field trip. This was a huge hit with both of the classes and something we plan on doing again. Thank you to all the parents who took the time to come with their child and explore and learn. We hope you enjoyed yourselves. During our last few weeks of school we will be learning about animals on the farm, family, and fun summer picnics. Last month we celebrated Easter by having parties, dying eggs, going on an Easter egg hunt and listening to a story about the butterfly and how it represents the colors of Easter. Thank you to Pastor Houck for sharing this great reminder with our students. On Wednesday, May 21st our classes will be visiting Ozzy’s again for our end of year celebration. This is always a fun filled day for the students and a great way to end our school year. On Thursday, May 22nd we will be holding our PM Group graduation ceremony. This year 19 students will be moving onto kindergarten. The students will be performing End of Year Celebration Wednesday, May 21 10 a.m. until Noon Ozzy’s Fun Center Be sure to join us for this fun filled event! Every 60 Seconds a Child Dies from Malaria Our Confirmation Class Malaria Project Annual LYF Assembly Kayla Bicskei Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Dingmans Ferry This year the confirmation class of Holy Trinity, Dingmans Ferry, decided to help their congregation learn about malaria. The 44 youth in the class are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Kayla Bicskei, the article’s author, is a 13-year-old 7th grader in her second year of the congregation’s 3-year confirmation program. When we heard that every sixty seconds a child dies from malaria, we had to do something. The ELCA Malaria Campaign had some great ideas. We decided to learn as much as we could about malaria and played the ELCA Malaria Jeopardy game. We then ordered the malaria packet and worked together to create a mosquito infestation at our church. We colored over 500 pictures of mosquitoes and put them up everywhere. Congregational members and friends in the community have been allowed to take down a mosquito for a donation of between $1.00 and $5.00. After we did a skit at worship one Sunday, one wonderful man paid $50.00 for one mosquito. So far we have raised more than $500.00 and we are working to do more. When we collect money, we all wear mosquito net hats on our heads and stand by a mosquito net that is like the ones being delivered to Africa. We have been sharing the great information from the ELCA malaria materials that explains how the money will be used: “The ELCA Malaria Campaign works with partner churches and organizations in Africa to treat and prevent malaria, to educate communities about malaria, and to support sustainable livelihood projects that allow families to stabilize their income and afford adequate health care.” We are really hoping to stop malaria from killing kids just like us. June 20-22, 2014 at Muhlenberg College If you have never attended an LYF assembly before, you are in for a real treat! This is the one event in our synod that is planned and lead by and for youth. Youth who are presently in grades 8 through 12 are welcome to participate. The theme for this year's assembly is Get Caught in the Word. Cost: $140 if registered by May 31; after May 31, the cost is $155. No registrations will be accepted after June 10. For more information and to register, go to www.godslove.org/ youth/lyfassembly.htm. Doing What Matters: The Adopt-a-Family Program The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Mission District was looking for new ways to be the church in its territory, five counties in the far northeastern region of Pennsylvania. The mission district decided to focus on Susquehanna County, a rural area where there is little or no presence of the Lutheran church and the expanding natural gas industry is changing the county’s demographics & economics. The Adopt-a-Family program was developed to address needs in the county and to demonstrate God’s love through people who are doing what matters. The program is a joint effort of the congregations of the mission district and the Women’s Resource Center of Susquehanna County, whose mission is to end domestic and sexual violence through advocacy, education, and social change. Funding comes from congregational donations and from grants from the Witness and Service Ministry Team of the synod. Is the program successful? The Women’s Resource Center stated that the support from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Mission District “continues to provide significant assistance that enables WRC to ease the financial burdens for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Susquehanna County.” Learn more at www.godslove.org/ resources/ missionsupportstories.htm. 2014 Bike for World Hunger Saturday, May 17, 2014; 9 am.-1 p.m. Bob Rodale Fitness & Cycling Park, Trexlertown Register now for the 2014 Bike for World Hunger! QUILTING GROUP Submitted by Judy Corl The Women of ELCA’s sewing group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. Donations of yarn, material, batting and new or used sheets are always needed. If you have pieces or scraps of material or pieces of yarn, we can use them too. Monetary donations are also welcomed. Please come and join us! Bring a good pair of scissors with you. And if you don’t sew, we need patch cutters and people to do other things too! There is something for everyone, even the novice sewer! Any questions please call Judy Corl at 610-926-2493. LABELS TO SAVE REDNER’S REGISTER TAPES The Women of the ELCA continue to save the bar codes from Campbell Soups, Pepperidge Farms, Franco-American and Swanson products. The bar codes are sent to Solheim Lutheran Home in Los Angeles in support of the Navajo Lutheran Mission and School in Rock Point, AZ, where they are used to purchase vans and school supplies at the mission. We are just one of 525 congregations participating in this worthwhile project. Keep on saving the bar codes and place them at the usher’s station or give them to Darlene Savage. Submitted by Janet Kleffel SPECIAL NOTE: Please Save ONLY THE BARCODE From These Labels Did you know that Redner’s Warehouse Markets gives 1% of purchases back to the Women of the ELCA? This one percent can really add up! And the monies goes to good things like the Mission Trip, VFW, Berk’s Women in Crisis, just to name a few. How does Redner’s calculate the one percent? Glad you asked. Well, we depend on church members to drop off their Redner’s receipts. However, its not quite that simple. In order for Redner’s to count the receipt (a.k.a. - register tape), it has to be the ENTIRE receipt, and it has to have a “save-a-tape” number on it. How do you insure this? Well, you must use your pump perks card or save-a-tape card at the checkout. Then, just drop the ENTIRE receipt in the box at the ushers station in the narthex. DO NOT cut the bottom off. We only get credit for COMPLETE tapes! Also, please be sure to turn your tapes in in a timely manner, as Redner’s will not accept any over three years old. Your help is so appreciated. If you have any questions, please see Janet Kleffel. Submitted by Andrienne Lesher On Tuesday, February 22, Cub Scout Pack 160 sent 5 Webelo II boys over the bridge to join Boyscout Troop 160 after they received their Arrow of Light award. A fun time was had by all at our Blue & Gold dinner as we celebrated our Arrow of Light recipients with a carnival themed party. We wish the best of luck to them as they continue on their scouting journey with the troop. March 22 the pack held their annual pinewood derby race. It was an exciting evening, and all the boys did an excellent job on their cars. After our races were complete, we held a baked good auction. The boys were put to the task of creating a baked good with their parents to be auctioned. All proceeds from the auction go to help fund our scouting activities. Our pack is selling ticket books for the Reading Fightin Phils for $27 which includes 6 general admission tickets that can be used at all regular season home games. You can also upgrade the tickets at a later date at the ticket window to reserved seating. Information will be available at the church. Checks should be made payable to: Reading Baseball LP. This fundraiser will end May 18. Any questions, please contact Liz Witters at 484-671-2471. Come join us and have a ton of fun! Day Camps/Camping, Community Events, Earning Badges, Pinewood Derby, Cub mobile Races, Holiday Parties, Adventures/Trips and so much more!
