The Position
Mission Statement
As a Jesuit, Catholic, all-male, college preparatory
school, Fordham Prep’s mission is to inspire
young men to reflect, to question, to learn, to pray,
to love, to serve, and to lead. Since 1841, we have
based our challenging curriculum and pursuit of
human and academic excellence on a foundation
of Catholic faith and principles. We seek to be
one community created from a broad spectrum
of ethnic, racial, geographic, and socio-economic
backgrounds. We strive to include qualified
students of limited financial resources by providing
substantial financial assistance. Our faculty and
staff dedicate themselves to a caring and dynamic
interaction with students both inside and outside
the classroom, a characteristic of Jesuit education
for over 450 years. We educate our students to be
men for others: spiritually motivated, intellectually
accomplished, and committed to promoting justice.
Philosophy
As a Jesuit school, our commitment to education
is shaped by the spirituality and pedagogical
tradition of the Society of Jesus, founded in 1540
by St. Ignatius of Loyola. This heritage stresses
the development of excellence in all dimensions
of the whole person: intellectual, religious, social,
emotional and physical. Today, Fordham Prep’s
educational apostolate is strengthened by our
affiliation with the local, national and international
networks of Jesuit secondary schools.

Constituents of Fordham Preparatory School in
the Bronx are part of a sacred tradition that spans
more than a century. Anchored in the 450-year-old
educational tradition of the Jesuits, Fordham Prep is a
community of young men connected by their culture
of faith, academic excellence, leadership, and service.
In keeping with their Jesuit values, students and
faculty strive to find God in all things, applying the
motto ad majorem Dei gloriam (“for the greater glory
of God”) to their academic, extracurricular, and social
pursuits. During their years at “The Prep,” students
become strong and principled leaders whose teachers
nurture and encourage them to challenge themselves,
work their hardest, and pursue frequent opportunities
to share their talents to improve the world.
For over 150 years, Fordham Prep has been a shining
example of strong Jesuit education. The school’s
historic relationship with Fordham University, and
its location on the university campus, underscores
its commitment to academic excellence and offers
engaging and challenging opportunities for young
men to pursue a wide range of academic interests.
The school’s strong campus ministry and service
programs augment its liberal arts curriculum, yielding
an experience that motivates and inspires students to
become men for others as well as scholars.
Fordham Prep seeks a new Principal, effective
July 2016. The person in this role oversees the 69
faculty members, the academic and student life of the
school’s 985 boys, and day-to- day operations. The
successful candidate will be a committed advocate of
Jesuit education who is eager to leverage the school’s
considerable strengths into tangible opportunities
for continued success. S/he will be a faith-filled and
practicing Roman Catholic and a capable, proven
leader who is excited at the prospect of joining this
special community of learners and propelling it to new

School History
Fast Facts
In 1841, Fordham Preparatory School and University were
founded together as St. John’s College by the Most Rev.
John Hughes, Bishop of New York. Six students arrived
in Fordham for the opening summer session, presided over
by Rev. John McCloskey, who would later become the first
American-born cardinal.
In 1846, Bishop Hughes invited members of the Society
of Jesus from Kentucky to take over operations at St.
John’s. Jesuit traditions of spirituality and scholarship have
indelibly defined Fordham Prep ever since.

The secondary school and college were inextricably linked
for the first 130 years of the school’s existence. In 1907, the school re-chartered, changing its name to
Fordham University. Officially, Prep was known as St. John’s College High School, though its nickname—
Fordham Prep—persisted.
In 1920, Fordham Prep became a day school with a distinct principal and was legally designated Fordham
College High School. In 1970, it legally separated from the university and secured its own educational
charter from the New York State Board of Regents.
The School
Each aspect of life at Fordham Prep is dictated by the motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam: for the greater glory
of God. The motto reminds students and faculty that everything they do—in the classroom, on the athletic
fields, on the stages, and in the community—is directed toward the greater glory of God. Teachers assist
students as they come to understand this principle, helping each student explore his unique potential.
By the time he graduates, each Fordham Prep student strives to be open to growth, intellectually accomplished,
religious, loving, committed to justice, and striving for wellness of mind and body.
Jesuit Education
For centuries, the Society of Jesus has championed education for “everyone: the rich and poor alike” (St.
Ignatius Loyola). A Jesuit education stems from the Society of Jesus’ deep-rooted history and its mission,
which is grounded in faith, intellectual rigor, leadership, and service. Inspired by humanist traditions, St.
Ignatius and his fellow Jesuits believed that everything created is good, all learning is good, and everything
in the world can help people find and serve God and one another.
The first Jesuit school opened in 1548 in Messina, Sicily; today there are more than 2,000 Jesuit educational
institutions in 56 countries around the world, including the 28 colleges and universities and 62 secondary
schools in the United States.

Academics
The Society of Jesus’ longstanding commitment to education shapes
the quality and experience of academic life at Fordham Prep. The
school’s curriculum follows a rigorous study of the humanities and
sciences, reflecting the Jesuit and Ignatian conviction that the study
of great ideas is inextricably linked to the formation of character. The
school’s program of studies encompasses more than the acquisition of
knowledge; it fosters academic discipline and encourages reflection
in the pursuit of excellence.
Fundamental to all the programs at Fordham Prep are three ideals
integral to the Jesuit way of approaching any endeavor: cura
personalis, magis and Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
• Cura personalis, the care of the individual, keeps teachers and
administrators focused on helping each student explore his unique
potential.
• Magis, the more, challenges each member of the Fordham Prep
community—faculty, administrator, and student—to discern what
can be done to the best of his or her ability, and to reflect always
on ways to improve.
• Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (AMDG), for the greater glory of God,
is the motto of the Society of Jesus. Often attributed to St. Ignatius
Loyola himself, it serves as the school’s constant reminder that the
work of its community is ultimately directed toward the greater
glory of God.
Teachers help students discover and hone their individual talents
and abilities, exposing them not only to their strengths, but also to
areas they find challenging. Faculty are constantly available, offering
tailored, personalized consultation to every student. Teachers, many

of whom have years of service, indicate they enjoy classroom autonomy, a strong partnership with committed
parents, collaboration among colleagues, and a growing breadth and depth to the academic program. Faculty
see “community” before they see “job.”
Students pursue coursework in classical and modern languages, English, fine arts, math, physical education
and health, religious studies, science, and social studies. Students eager to explore a certain area in greater
depth have the opportunity to take 17 AP subjects, and qualified seniors can attend college classes at Fordham
University. All students have access to the University Library for research. Each fall, Fordham Prep welcomes
more than 100 admission representatives from colleges and universities across the country, reinforcing the
school’s strong and broad representative college placement at schools from Carnegie Mellon and Bates to
Claremont McKenna and Yale. 60% of members of the class of 2015 enrolled at colleges and universities
rated by Barrons’ as “most competitive.”
Technology is an integral part of all aspects of life at Fordham Prep, and a recent One-to-One Computing
Program ensures that students are constantly connected and engaged with 21st century media. Students and
teachers use smart phones and tablet PCs continuously in the classroom, around school and at home, allowing
the FP community to learn, research, create, and collaborate as needed on a 24/7 basis.
Student Life
At its core, Fordham Prep is a place of
academic excellence and strong Catholic
faith. In keeping with the Jesuit tradition, the
school’s Campus Ministry offers a number
of events, activities, and programs to nurture
and strengthen the spiritual growth of Prep
students and staff, forming members of the
community who will truly be men of faith and
men for others.

participate. School-wide Masses and liturgies punctuate the year, allowing students to explore and deepen
their own faiths. Leadership opportunities abound: students develop leadership skills through liturgical
and retreat ministry, and they lead their school community about social justice issues and Catholic social
teaching. Through annual retreats, students grow together in faith. Freshman experience an overnight retreat;
sophomores a three-day discovery retreat; 96% of all juniors elect to participate in a three-day Emmaus
Retreat; and seniors attend a retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Both students and faculty
speak of the pervasive sense of ministry among everyone at The Prep: “that’s the special sauce—the love,
support, and the real care for the individual that students feel and that faculty have for each other.”
Fordham Prep’s Christian Service Program offers a number of social justice and service programs that help
students respond to their Christian call to serve the world. Students have four-year service requirements that
constantly remind them of their responsibility to
service. They may also participate in immersion
trips to the Appalachian Mountains, to Camden,
New Jersey, and to Ecuador.
Campus life is vivid and vibrant at Fordham
Prep; students may select from a wide range of
clubs and activities that fit all types of interests—
from art and publicity club to astronomy
club, bluegrass club, chess club, and diversity
alliance, among many others. The school fields
41 interscholastic teams in baseball, basketball,
bowling, crew, football, golf, ice hockey,
lacrosse, rugby, soccer, swimming and diving,
tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.
Student athletes learn that sports are a means to a greater end, promoting discipline and teamwork and teaching
students about the value of diversity and multiple approaches to a common goal.
Physical Campus
Fordham Prep occupies a well-resourced campus
in the heart of the Bronx in New York City. The
school’s main building, Shea Hall, was completed
in 1972. Additions, including the Hall of Honor,
intramural gym, fitness center, and Leonard Theatre,
were completed in 1995. Over the past eight years,
the school has invested $15 million in physical
improvements, including: an extensive third floor
renovation and fourth floor expansion; school-wide
WiFi; the Boller Science Center, which features
state-of-the-art chemistry and biology labs and a
greenhouse; the Rowen Athletic Field; the Donnie
Walsh basketball court; a just-completed renovation
of the student Commons; and a new entranceway
and lobby, to be completed in December 2015. As the only independent secondary school in New York City
located on a university campus, the Prep shares with Fordham University use of the University Church for
school-wide masses and university fields and athletic facilities, including its tennis courts and pool.

Lawrence, Fordham, and several schools of design, among others. A true “melting pot” of the country, New
York provides something for every type of resident and visitor, from cultural attractions to outdoor amusements
to legendary sports teams.
Opportunities and Challenges
Fordham Prep operates within the President/Principal leadership model. In this structure, the Principal
functions as the chief academic officer reporting to the President, who serves as the CEO of the institution.
The Principal is responsible primarily for the day-to-day academic operations as well as student services and
shares with the President responsibility for mission, ministry, and Ignatian spirituality programs for students,
faculty, parents, and alumni. With a new, dynamic President and a strong, expanded administrative team, it
is an opportune moment to join Fordham Prep. The school is poised to reassert its longstanding academic
excellence, generate fresh approaches to teaching and learning, and help students find new levels of intellectual
curiosity and scholastic performance in the classroom.
• Following a long-time Principal who departed this summer, an Interim Principal has been appointed for
the 2015-2016 academic year. The next Principal will have an opportunity to transition into a stable, highperforming environment and to bring a fresh perspective to the quality of the student learning experience.
• Last Spring, Fordham Prep successfully attained its 10-year NYSAIS (New York State Association of

Independent Schools) accreditation. The NYSAIS Accreditation Report contains over 70 recommendations
to guide the Prep’s commitment to continuous improvement. These recommendations are currently being
integrated with the Prep’s emerging Strategic Plan, which will create for the next Principal a clear action
plan and leadership agenda, bolstered by strong community support.
The next Principal will also have an opportunity to operate from a world-class platform of educational
excellence. Fordham Prep has an outstanding faculty who are eager to welcome and support new leadership
and to participate in the continuous development and improvement of teaching and learning on campus.
After many years of leadership under one Principal, there is a sense that the school would benefit from a
careful review of organizational structure to ensure that academic resources are properly aligned to move
the school forward and take it to the next level. This will be both an opportunity and a challenge for the
next Principal. The trustees and President welcome an educational leader with passion and vision who
will challenge the community to raise its expectations and standards and take this great school to an even
greater level.
The school is in the second year of a One-to-One Computing Program. The next Principal will be
expected to drive the implementation of this important initiative, lead the integration of technology into
the curriculum, and ensure the active participation of all faculty and staff.
Other new initiatives include a global exchange program in partnership with the Hyde Center for Global
Education at Boston College High School and co-sponsorship of a citywide Jesuit middle school program,
REACH, to identify, recruit, and prepare students with limited financial resources for Fordham Prep.
Fordham Prep celebrates the 175th Anniversary of its founding next school year. In conjunction with this
anniversary, the Prep is launching a fundraising campaign aimed at growing the endowment to increase
student financial aid and supporting new initiatives and additional campus improvements.
Qualifications and Qualities
of the Next Principal
The President, together with the Board of Trustees and the entire community, seeks a faith-filled, practicing
Catholic with a passion for mission and an experience of Ignatian spirituality. Among other strengths and
experience the school seeks are:
• Teaching and leadership experience at one or more of the 62 secondary schools in the Jesuit School
Network (JSN) is highly preferred, although Fordham Prep welcomes candidates who lack direct teaching
experience in Jesuit schools but have been educated in Jesuit institutions or who embrace Catholic mission
and Ignatian identity.
• Ability as a “relational” leader, who is able to set a respectful and positive tone while connecting joyfully
and promoting collaboration among all constituents including administration, faculty, students, families,
alumni, and the wider community of Jesuit education.
• It is assumed that viable candidates will bring strong academic credentials along with deep domain
knowledge of secondary schools and a track record of implementing best practices across all aspects of
the student experience.
• It is essential the serious candidate be a leader dedicated to service to the community, who brings a
collaborative and respectful leadership style while at the same time be committed to high standards and
accountability.
• S/he must be an outstanding communicator – confident and clear with teachers, students, alumni, and
parents.
• Organized, with good management skills and follow-through.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary and benefits for this position will be very competitive for Catholic schools both nationally and in
metropolitan New York City. The school’s strong benefit package is excellent and includes the extraordinary
