In January 1914 a travelling basket drifted
ashore by the icy river Danube with a
strangled woman’s body. One of the most
high-profile courtisanes in town, Elza Mágnás
was strangled and her body was thrown into
the icy water of the Danube. “Demimonde”
chronicles the last four days of Elza, her
complex relationship with her housekeeper,
her patron and her lover, through the eyes of a
young and naïve maid. Based on a true story
about love, passion, sex, power and murder.
The plot revolves around three women: the
demimonde prostitute Elza Mágnás (played
by Patrícia Kovács), her bigot housekeeper
Rózsi (Dorka Gryllus) and their young and
naïve maid Kató (Laura Döbrösi). The bizarre
and passionate relationship between them
turns more and more complicated and
dangerous by the men surrounding Elza
(János Kulka and Péter Sándor) right till the
shocking endgame.
“Demimonde”, the new film of the makers
of the award-winning and festival success
hostage drama “The Ambassador to Bern”.

The Curse of the Black Mummy
a fekete múmia átka
“Remember, my son, those writers rip off somebody every night: either me or their
publisher. It is more frequently me. As all those picaresque novelists visit this café, you
can believe me if I say: I am a victim of more novels than all the fishy cadavers in the
Scotland Yard’s records.” – the Armenian who owns the Absinth Café
The first half of the 20th century is a golden age
of Hungarian literature. Schoolchildren’s books
are filled with works written by those giants of
literature who were churning out masterpieces
while sitting in once famous cafés. Our story
is not about them.
Our film commemorates the pulp fiction
writers so typical of the age. Those mostly
forgotten authors flooded the fans of easy
reading and fun stories with innumerable
cheap Westerns, pulp fiction about the French
Foreign Legion, and detective and romantic
adventure stories. The moneyless scribblers
often paid what they had consumed on that day
by giving the headwaiter a fresh chapter from
their serial novels.
Our hero, Plock is the uncrowned king of pulp
fiction. He was not older than 23 when he won
the Nobel Prize for Literature. Actually, he won
it from a famous Swedish author in a card
game called Macau. Plock is a real big shot.
He is the unofficial holder of the world speed
record of novel writing in coffee houses.
But Plock is in a big trouble now. Ha has
borrowed an amount of 1000 pengoes from
the Armenian owner of the Absinth Café,

to privately publish his book of poems through
which he desires to reach the high Pantheon
of literature. But what a disappointment!
While his volume It Hurts Me receives very
bad criticism, readers are not open, either, to
Plock’s soul-tormenting poetry. If he cannot
repay the money to the Armenian before
6 p.m., he will not only lose his regular table in
the café but the wicked Armenian owner will
also tell Plock’s bride, Evelin that he had spent
the loan to buy a house, on his literary venture.
Georges, the wicked and rich owner of Pepita
Publishing House who has been in hopeless
love with the girl for long, would eventually get
a real chance to seduce Evelin.
The Armenian gives Plock a last chance: if
he helps the Armenian’s youngest son, a
talentless idiot called Gerzson to finish writing
his first novel until 6 p.m., he will not only
waive from reclaiming the debt but will buy
500 pieces of the book It Hurts Me.
Our film follows this impossible mission as
Plock and Gerzson write the crime story
The Curse of the Black Mummy. Rich not only
in literary excitements, our story revivifies the
most well-known genres of pulp fiction in the
coffee house that turns into a Western saloon
and an Arabian sheik’s tent, then the dreadful
scene of a ghost story.
This movie salutes Jenő Rejtő, the greatest
Hungarian pulp fiction author while taking
spectators behind the scenes of creative
work. This film presents you a crooked mirror
in which not only writers but everybody can
recognise themselves in one way or another.

Kornél has asthma. He only gets to watch
other boys playing football. He is soon joined
by a strange girl, who wants to know “who
put the stone on his chest”. Kornél tries to
shake her off at first, but she insists on telling
him that his asthma is obviously caused by
a dragon living in the same building. When
Kornél challenges her eccentric assertion,
she tells him that the stone monkeys on
the front gate protect the building from evil
spirits called peritons, whose sole aim is
to persecute the magicos living within. The
young girl soon spots a van that parks outside
the house every day but no one ever gets
out. The sign on the side of the van reads:
Mr. Shadow.
Izabella tells Kornél that the dragon living in
the house is none other than Mr. Dragomán,
whose name needs no explanation. Kornél

goes up to the third floor to spy on “the
dragon”, who turns out to be a harmless
old man and gives him a clacker that he
confiscated from Kornél’s father 30 years
before.
Mr. Dragomán’s flat catches fire in the middle
of the night, and the old boy is carted off to
hospital. The kids see that the ambulance
belongs to the Saint George Foundation. They
look this up on the internet and are shocked
to discover that Saint George slew a dragon
with his spear.
The young duo find their way to the hospital
that Izabella thinks is a periton venture. Mr.
Dragomán is hooked up to machines and
cannot talk, so Izabella interprets the old
dragon’s thoughts (she is actually a lizard,
so she can speak his secret language). She
claims that Mr. Dragomán says that it was
not him who put the stone on Kornél’s chest.
Then who was it? He does not want to say
but eventually admits that it was none other
than Kornél’s father.
Kornél hurries home and quizzes his
distraught mother about his father’s
whereabouts. His mother tells him that
she does not know where he is and neither
does she want to know because he is “not
a good man”. Kornél presses her until she
admits that his father sent him presents for
his last five birthdays, but she never passed
them on to him. The present intended for
his ninth birthday includes an old diary of a
“wanderer”. Kornél reads this and comes to
the conclusion that his father, who is also
a magical wanderer, was kidnapped by
peritons when he vanished five years ago.
Kornél walks over to the periton’s van (Mr.
Shadow), and tries to open the door but
the periton starts the engine and speeds
away. Kornél tracks the van down to an

abandoned factory. He carries on looking
until he stumbles into a loft apartment decked
out with rosemary (the wanderers’ plant). He
then comes face to face with the periton, who
smiles and offers him a football. “I wanted
to give you your tenth birthday present in
person,” the man says. Kornél has an asthma
attack and passes out.
When he wakes again, he is in his own bed
at home. His mother is sitting by his bed with
the man he thought was a periton, but who he
now discovers is his father. It turns out that
his father became addicted to a prescribed
drug five years earlier, and broke into a
pharmacy. Instead of a prison sentence, he
was given the option of rehab. A court order
meant that he was unable to approach his
son in person and that is why he watched him
from the street every day from the secrecy of
his work wan. His mom eventually agrees to
let Kornél see his father on a regular basis.
Kornél is happy but at the same time a little
disappointed because he now knows that
all Izabella’s stories were a figment of her
overactive imagination, and he is not in fact
a wanderer. The story ends as father and son
set off to have a game of football.

the previous night. Tamás asks for his boss’

blind prostitute who is capable of identifying

Tamás does his best to make Conan’s facial

Tamás has been working as a sketch artist

The film is set in a small village in Hungary
in 1990. Life in the village has become hard
with the change of the political system. There
are less job opportunities and the majority of
the locals are unemployed. They get drunk
in the local pub every day and there is little
hope for a better future. In this hopeless world
only one man has real ambitions: CSORNAI
(István Znamenák) is running for mayor and
would do anything in order to increase his
popularity and win the election.
One day an American called FRED PEDRUZZI
(Mike Kelly) walks into the pub causing great
surprise among the regulars. He wants to
find his father whose bomber plane crashed
near the village in the Second World War.
Csornai decides to help the foreigner find his
long-lost father. Not surprisingly, he hopes
to take advantage of the unusual search.
As things get going, some long-forgotten
secrets are revealed. More and more people
get involved and Fred finally meets POLYÁK

village who refuses to help.

perpetrators wish to get rid of their sin and

about their deadly sin? The moment of truth
comes when they least expect it. The film is
about this inevitable moment. The arrival of
the pilot’s son turns life in the sleepy village
upside down and makes local people think
about their past.
Learning more about past events, Csornai is
forced to change his mind, and he decides to
make it impossible for the American to go on

was first welcome and cherished by the local
community, becomes a real pain in the neck.

The political thriller of first-time director,
Attila Szász chronicles the day of August
16, 1958, when two Hungarian immigrants
(Tamás Szabó Kimmel and József Kádas)
break into the Hungarian embassy in Bern
and take the ambassador (János Kulka)
hostage.
As the Swiss police surrounds the building
and a group of Hungarian immigrants
shows up on the street to demonstrate, a
tense, twist-filled hostage drama plays out
behind the closed doors of the embassy. The
screenplay by Norbert Köbli (’The Exam’) is
based on a true story.
Hungary, 1956, three months before the outbreak of the freedom fight
and civil war against communism and Soviet occupation. In pursuit
of freedom, three young Hungarians decide to hijack a 15-seater
passenger plane and force it to West Germany. The plan is highly
dangerous: besides risking to get shot down by the communist air
force, the hijackers also have to find and neutralize the undercover
security policeman on board. They agree no to harm anyone. But
events take an unexpected turn… Based on real events.
Four senior high school students go on a rafting trip with their two
guides to discover the wonderful landscapes around the Soča River.
The youngsters have a race and tease each other until one of them,
Gabi breaks her ankle in the heat of the excitement. Although they
spend the night in a good mood celebrating the girl’s 18th birthday
together, the group gets separated the next day due to the injury.
One of the guides takes three of them canyoning, while the other
who is Gabi’s ex-boyfriend plans to slowly boat down the river with
the injured girl. Just before they leave the guy is attacked by wild
bees causing him an allergic reaction and he passes out. Gabi, who
is hardly able to walk, tries to bring him down the river in order to
get help. Meanwhile the other team has an accident too.
In hardly 24 hours these teenagers on the threshold of living
independently not only lose their faith in being invulnerable, but
also step into adulthood without noticing.

The episodes, linked only loosely as sketches,
present the life of an incompatible team
born to struggle in one of the most delicate
business areas, utilizing every possibility

central idea of this mocumentary is that the
characters of the film try to project the most

the crew can surprise them any time, we also
learn about their most guarded secrets and
that part of their personalities which would

of airline operations and this shortcoming
also reflected on his team. Selection is not
necessarily based on professional grounds.
Szemlő rather relies on Hollywood films
about airlines: the pilot should be handsome;
the uniform should fit him well. Lack of
intelligence is not truly a problem. The flight
attendants should be pretty and if their
resume includes previous air travels they
already passed the entrance exam.
The episodes are 26-minute long, and a
season consists of 24 parts. In the first
season the viewers get acquainted with the
history of the airline from its foundation to
the moment when the closing down of the
company emerges as the outcome of an
investigation by the air travel authorities.
Róbert has a vision of becoming ever more
grandiose. He feels in his gut that the company
would hold its own even in international

featured on the cover of Forbes, and perhaps
even on two subsequent editions. He makes
all efforts to forge his employees into a team

written by Gábor Vaszary (1897-1985), was
loved by readers and critics alike in pre-war
Hungary. The novel contains a number of
autobiographical details as the author lived

inside view of the city but also a wealth of
experience with his fellow countrymen who
also found themselves there. (His second

Vaszary took a stand against the extreme
right in the early 1940s and fled communism
in 1947 to settle in Switzerland. His works
were then banned in Hungary for more than

a secret life, where something interesting
happens all the time. On the endless
pastures, male great bustards are hustling
and pushing each other in the breeding
season. With the migrating birds in spring
and autumn the white salty lakes are like big,
crowded airports. Groups of young eagles are
hunting awkwardly, and from the sand the
wind builds 30-40-meter high mounds, which
rabbits turn to cheeses riddled with holes.
The short-eared owl is clapping his wings and
there are so many mayflies over the rivers,
that you can hardly see the other side. In the
forests fallow deer are fighting. The queerest
creature is the protagonist itself. It used to
live here, but as people exterminated it, it
vanished for decades. But this four-legged
predator braves danger. The golden jackal
learnt to become invisible and now comes
back. It wanders alone, then finds a mate,
brings up its cubs and makes a flock of its
own. In the frosty night the new flock wails
together, ”This is our land, our empire.”

The viper: the word alone fills most people
with dread. It calls to mind some kind of
huge, writhing monster, lying in wait to bite.
The Hungarian meadow viper (Vipera ursinii
rakosiensis), however, is not large and doesn’t
attack. It is rather small and it would rather
flee. Its venom is deadly only to grasshoppers
and crickets. It almost disappeared because
its habitats were plowed under and drained.
It’s not easy being legless in a world ruled
by four-wheeled machines and two-legged
creatures. The survivors retreated to the sand
dunes of Kiskunság National Park. This is
where our story’s protagonist, 2K366/08,
entered the world. This is her story.

hours together. We have been to the Red

Pacific Ocean. Everywhere we have been, we
have been only looking for sharks. Besides
admiring sharks, I also feel sorry for them

DOCUMENTARY We live in a digital age surrounded by
cameras. Many of us got accustomed to our
steps being watched. But Livius Varga, a
musician and naturalist, hasn’t gotten used
to it yet. He is the kind who notices when
being watched. And now he will do the same.
He is fed up with being watched everywhere
and bought some cameras. Small and clever
cameras that can see both in the night and
day. With their help he discovered that at
night his dog was getting into places that
were prohibited for him.
He became elated and started the job in the
city. He put a camera just above the nest of
common kestrels nesting in the window of a
10-storey building and enjoyed the everyday
life of the kestrel family online. After this no
one could stop him. The Danube floodplain
came next, where he found the tracks and
then the dam of the yellow-teeth beaver
and put a camera nearby, so he could get
images of a surprisingly curious specimen
of European beavers. After this, he caught
the train to Transylvania, to the Harghita
Mountains, where his forest-trekker friend,
Norbi met him. Immediately upon arrival,
Norbi threw him into deep water, more
exactly into a real bear cave. Bear tracking
gained momentum just after this. They placed
cameras in the wilderness and thanks to
modern techniques live broadcast started.

The personal story of an oak tree
This story is about an oak tree. A giant which
a lot of interesting things have happened to,
even though it has been standing in the same
place for centuries.
After spending some time with his master,
Livius started for a real challenge: he
ventured into the wilderness alone and set
his cameras at various places to observe the
life of the forest.
Livius has learnt a lot from the locals, people
who during the centuries got accustomed to
living in close proximity to wild game. The
presence of bears and wolves is natural for
them, just like blue sky or green grass. It is
a knowledge without which you cannot live
in harmony with nature.
It is also a knowledge that we try to pass on.
This is why this film was made.

His evocative adventures always start by

the kind of tricks and survival strategies that
were developed by small and large creatures
living there before and currently.
Filming locations include UNESCO World

Beech Forests of the Carpathians, Lake

landscapes like the High Tatra Mountains,

one of the oldest oak tree of the Carpathian

Vad Szigetköz – A szárazföldi delta2013
wildlife DOCUMENTARY DOCUMENTARY To take a good photograph is never easy. To
take a great photograph of an uncooperative
subject -like a bird for example- is even
harder. But to take the perfect image of a
bird in the midst of breathtaking behavior is
practically impossible. Bence Máté, however,
knows the trick for he is invisible! To the bird’s
eye, at least.
In the western access areas to Hungary
life had speeded up - there are windmills,
motorways, big cities and industrial parks
all over the place. Yet, something is hiding
between them. This is an enormous coneshaped alluvial deposit with tiny villages,
forests, and river branches. On one side of
this region is today’s Szigetköz.
Flowing out of the Alps and the Carpathians
the Danube River created this inland delta
unique in Europe. Arriving at the plain,
the river broke into wide branches where
unparalleled fauna developed. These days
the river cannot change its course as freely as
it used to in the old days. The decisive change
came about some twenty years ago with the
diversion of the river and the building of the
hydroelectric plant of Bős. Seeing the grip
of the built-in surroundings, the question is
obvious: can the fauna preserve its former
abundance?
At 16, Bence won his first prize at BBC’s
prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the
Year competition. At age 25 - with more
international awards under his belt - he
continues to surprise the world with stunning
wildlife images. Bence Máté has a special
talent in hiding, hence his amazing success.
The Invisible Wildlife Photographer simply
disappears in one of his specially designed
photography hides, from where he can
enjoy, observe and - to the delight of most
of us - capture what he sees. Birds and other
animals are entirely unaware that Bence is
close by, thus allowing him to photograph
them in unique and rarely seen moments of
intimate behaviors.
A unique window on both bird behavior and
stunning imagery, as well as the ‘secrets’
of Bence’s success, are showcased in this
revealing documentary.

Famous Hungarian alternative musician Lívius Varga has some
problems with time. Fed up with the crazy rhythm of Hungary’s
capital city he decides to move underground. As a psychologist
by profession, he’s eager to know what happens to his sense of
time after spending days in total darkness. He also hopes that his
expedition to the secret time capsules of Budapest helps him to
understand the city’s history.
Lívius is documenting his journey with a small handycam , but we
can also follow his daily routine through infrared security cameras.
Throughout his adventures we learn more and more about the
artificial underground facilities of the city: from the nuclear bunker
under the castle district to the flooded tunnels of the Kőbánya mine.
Budapest Underground features footage never seen before on
television: from the underwater springs of the Gellért Baths to the
newly discovered dripstone wonderland of the Pálvölgyi cave system.
We are not alone – neither in the Universe, nor in our flat! Unconvinced?
Take a torch, a binocular or a microscope and look around in your
home, sweet home. Budapest Wild takes you to the capital of Hungary
- a nice living place for nearly 2 million people. But not only humans
can call Budapest a home… The food, shelter and comfort provided
by this old and beautiful city is also appreciated by wild animals and
plants. By now these species hold firm positions in the streets, our
cellars, lofts and rooms. These city dwellers, however, are only visible
to the trained eye. Join Sándor Badár a truly amateur naturalist on
his not really scientific expedition to one of the weirdest, busiest and
craziest concrete jungles. An HD documentary that won multiple
awards directed by Filmjungle.eu’s renowned wildlife filmmaker
Zsolt Marcell Tóth.
The 7x15 minute series partly follows the structure of seasons
–”Winter”, “Spring” etc. but the order of the episodes is mostly
determined by the plants in focus:“Bean and Corn”, “Poppy Seed”,
“Peas and Onion”, “Pepper and Tomato”, “Potato”. Apart from
introducing plant seeds, fall and spring soil works, planting, summer
activities and harvesting are also discussed. We regularly visit the
school garden where the students, with the help of a professional,
take care of the plants even during summer break.
We accompany adults and kids to celebrations that are determining
events of peasant lifestyle and we participate in a winter chasing
carnival and a pilgrim travel to Szentkút. We follow the program
that started in the fall of 2012 when cultivation started even in the
backyards of the Roma that had been neglected for so long.
The documentary film shows a slice of the state security operations
of the Kádár-regime from a completely new aspect. It is the first
time that a former spymaster speaks openly, including details about
spying on the Catholic Church. The film breaks fresh ground by using
confrontation and unvarnished dialogue and thereby rendering an
authentic picture of the objectives of the state security forces, the
recruitment of informers and the applied coercive methods.
The protagonist is a former police officer, “the spymaster”, who
recruited and kept contact with innumerable secret agents. His area
of expertise was the “fight against the reactionary church”.

Panni is getting married to the rich landlord Komáromi and thereby
becomes the first lady of the village. Although the marriage makes
her wealthy, she is not in love with her husband, her new family scorns
her and she cannot even find a maidservant among her former good
friends. Miska, her former love interest, unexpectedly returns to the
village and visits her. Panni receives his visit coldly and after mutual
accusations she shows him the door. Panni tells everything to her
husband. Komáromi, however, behaves unmanly and instead of
protecting his wife he has others throw Miska out of the ball which
makes Panni despise him forever. When Panni and Miska meet
again, it is now Panni who doesn’t let the boy return to Pest alone.
Jóska and Zsuzsika are poor day laborers. They swallow the dust of
the threshing machines as they work on the fields from sunrise to
sunset. Despite the rough conditions they fall in love with each other.
Their flourishing love gets threatened when they return home to the
city. Almost everything and everyone is against their relationship.
All refers to a divine commandment of the Bible saying that “poor
girl should marry a wealthy man, and poor man should marry a
wealthy woman”. Jóska seems to accept the idea of a marriage of
convenience and he is planning to marry to a girl chosen by his family.
Zsuzsika – wearing a mask and a carrying revolver– is approaching
the window of the bridal house to kill her unfaithful lover…
The movie combines 3 stories about Hortobágy. It looks at the
honesty, fallibility, toughness and the deep emotions of these ancient
Hortobágy people through a sacred lens. The director was inspired
by a novel “Komor Ló” (Gloomy Horse – written by Zsigmond Móricz)
and his own visions of reality. The movie is based on two legendary
stories of the Hortobágy people told by word of mouth that take
place in 1945 and during the Communist takeover.
Hortobágy is mainly known as Hungary’s largest national park.
Hortobágy is similar to a steppe, a grassy plain with cattle, sheep,
oxen and horses tended by herdsmen. Hortobágy provides habitat
for a great variety of species. The more than 800 km² region has
been named a World Heritage site.

The project bearing the title ...meanwhile in Budapest is a series of
loosely connected short films with the common element: they are
all set in the reality of the capital as anyone may experience it. The
8 short films are approximately 8-15 minutes long and each film
tells a simple, everyday story. Every one of these short films is a
low-budget production set at authentic venues and produced with
a small crew. These components all emphasize the “here and now”
nature of the situation and result in colorful portraits of Budapest.

Last Rhapsody is an exciting, fast-moving and heart-rending film
rich with deep emotions. It recalls the final days in the life of one
of history’s greatest composer and the eternal mystery of the
relationship between artist and muse. It is a story of passionate
love, death, immortality and unconditional devotion.
In 1911, to mark the centenary of Ferenc Liszt’s birth and the 25th
anniversary of his death, a Budapest theatre is preparing for the
premiere of a play recalling the composer’s final days in Bayreuth.
On one occasion, a mysterious woman appears during a rehearsal,
asserting that the play does not correspond to reality and that Liszt
did not die as we know from various novels and recollections. The
actors want to learn the truth, and so the woman reveals the painfully
beautiful relationship between Liszt and one of his last pupils, Lina
Schmalhausen, which lasted from the middle of the 1870s to his death.
The film relates to the life and career of Vilmos Zsolnay, a worldfamous potter, founder of modern Hungarian ceramics and inventor
of the lustrous glaze known as eosin.
Set in the second half of the 19th century, we visit Hungary during
an era of great technical advancement and intellectual prosperity.
Zsolnay’s father wants the young Vilmos to become a merchant
but his exuberant son has very different plans. He tries his hand
at painting, imagines his future in art and spends much of his time
talking to his long-dead sister in her room. Then an enigmatic old
man from Italy appears who has haunted him since his teenage years.
Vilmos’ brother, himself a man of the world, founds a pottery in the
town but fails to find contentment in his work, so eventually leaves
the factory to Vilmos. It is then that the mysterious Italian gives him
the secret recipe for the glaze to a vase from Gubbio, which radically
changes the course of Vilmos Zsolnay’s life.
On May 5, 1936, celebrated author Frigyes Karinthy undergoes brain
surgery in Stockholm. Frici, a 16-year-old boy appears before him in
the operating theatre. Karinthy sees himself. The young man beckons
the writer who is drifting between life and death into a strange world.
The author’s childhood experiences come alive before him - the
same experiences he had immortalized before in his novel Tanár
úr kérem (Please Sir!).
The oppressive proximity of his passing brings a new perspective to
these nostalgic reminiscences. Karinthy wonders in consternation
through this inverted world as Frici falls in love, becomes embroiled in
conflict with his teacher, fails Hungarian class and appears destined
for military school. Eventually, he too develops into a writer. Only one
question remains: Was Karinthy’s operation a success and will he
return to the world of the living?
Sobri is a feature film that relates the life of Jóska Sobri the legendary
outlaw of the Bakony Mountains from 1830. The story is based on
historical events and legends alike.
It is also available as TV series.

The film is set in Transylvania, in the
mountains of Harghita in 1920. By then
Transylvania belonged to Romania due to
the peace treaties closing the First World
War. The hero figure, Abel is a fifteen-year-old
adolescent boy from a poor peasant family
who is forced by poverty to work far from
home. His father finds him a job where he
is in charge of the forest of the neighboring
city’s bank. The forest is up in the snow-drifts
where he can only depend on himself and
his intelligence. The death of his mother and
the long time spent in solitude forces him to
come of age by the end of the story.
Screen version of the famous novel written
by Transylvania-based Hungarian author
Áron Tamási. Abel, fed up with poverty and
hopelessness, embarks on a new life in
America joining the flood of immigrants of
the 1920’s.
The TV version of one of the most famous
Hungarian operas, Bánk bán tells the story
of rivalry and jealousy. Bánk is an influential
Hungarian nobleman with a beautiful wife,
Melinda. The evil Queen wants to weaken
Bánk and therefore encourages
her brother to conquer Melinda’s heart and
break the nobleman in the
process along with his political power.
A young teacher starts his life with a pure
heart and an unbroken will. He undertakes
not only the hard life of the day laborers of
the nation, but a lot more: the armed service
of the flag by Hungary people who stand
up against oppression during the war of
independence.
Italian – Hungarian coproduction based
on Gyula Krúdy’s novel of the same title.
This particular “dream world” emerges
from the amalgamation of the life in Pest
at the beginning of the last century and the
lifestyle of the 19th century country houses,
in which the main characters of Sunflower
live their extraordinary and lonely lives. It
is an artificial world through which Krúdy
depicts the decadent, helpless characters
of his time with some criticism.
The Turks are demanding further taxes from
Prince Apafi who sends them two hundred
gold coins to be handed over by Kristóf
Szitáry. Szitáry takes his two sons along
and on their way they stay at the house of
the merchant Piszliczár, who steals from
Szitáry. Since everybody thinks that Szitáry
is the thief, the Prince jails him and his sons
are held hostage by the Turkish pasha. The
children escape with the help of Cselebi, then
with the help of Pipitér they are preparing
to free their father on the Isten Island of the
Ecsedi swamps. After numerous adventures,
they finally succeed.

hacktion
hacktion
crime
crime The basic concept of the new season
of Hacktion is the introduction of a new
investigation team, Major Case Squad
along with the Infrastructure Protection
Team known from the first season. The
new law enforcement team merges the
latest information technology with classical
investigative techniques.
There is a war raging in the world today of
which the general public knows nothing. It
is not fought with conventional weapons but
with computers. The age of the average foot
soldier is less than 20 and they are all highly
trained hackers.
Hacktion is the latest drama series from
MTVA - Hungarian Public Media that reveals
the inner workings of the Infrastructure
Defense Division (IDD). Betti Zsolnay (Szonja
Oroszlán) works as a police IT expert and
As their name suggests, the department
is expected to clear up cases urgently with

also happens to be a pretty smart hacker.
She is called in to help with a special police
operation where a high-ranking military
intelligence officer, Colonel Szabo (Tamás
Dunai), spots her talent for technology.
Betti soon finds herself working for the
Infrastructure Defense Division that was
formed to fend off internet attacks and track
down cyber criminals. She thinks she knows
what she has signed up for but it turns out be
a whole lot more…
30x52’

András (Ferenc Hujber) is the ace at the
Infrastructure Defense Division and the one
in charge of all operators. He initially protests
against Betti’s rapid recruitment but he soon
realizes that he rather likes the new girl.
Betti is officially employed by Hacktion Ltd.,
which acts as the cover organization for the
Infrastructure Defense Division, where her
cold, professional relationship with András
is quickly replaced by an entirely different set
of emotions...
The crime cases are all IT and internet
related, but during the actual investigation
they use old-school, analogue methods. The
new season is based on the latest trends in
criminology, the most efficient, integrated
application of so-called online and offline
investigative tools.
Every episode tells a separate case which
is solved by the end of the episode. The
only theme that loosely links the episodes
together is the personal micro stories of the
main characters.
The protagonist is inspector Péter Szondi
and an additional lead character joins him
in each episode. Apart from serious topics,
humor also plays a constructive part in the
new season of Hacktion Reloaded.

A sitcom of 25-minute episodes about
everyday life at the Labor Inspectorate as
it faces an audit from Brussels. Precision,
competency, professionalism. These words
form the least apt description of the Labor
Inspectorate and its staff, who – even in the
middle of the greatest chaos – tend to make
their own trifling problems and personal
conflicts a priority above their work. Truly,
work never stops in the office, but it is so
because it never started in the first place.
The lovable office personnel carry on with
their activities with the same enthusiasm as
we have already got used to, which might be
considered as proper work process by the
unsuspecting viewer. The main character of
the unlikely situations is Elvira, the leader of
the inspectorate, who is “the oldest piece of
furniture” in the office. There are János, the
dedicated, hypochondriac bureaucrat who
tries to write his name into history under
her leadership, Katalin, the half-educated
HR assistant, who is suffering from the lack
of men in her life. Albert is still struggling
with his alcohol addiction, but is able to
produce a great pile of unnecessary official
papers in order to veil his inadequacy. Timi,
the lively, ginger – otherwise incredibly
“blonde” – receptionist is still unable to keep
anything in mind. There is an important role
for Tamás, the top manager of our time, who
is a consultant from the private sector. In
the new season, Karesz, the shabby trainee
returns. He is the latest workforce with a
fresh degree after nine grievous years at
university whose first workplace is the „Office
of Labor and Space Security” hence does
not take his duties that seriously. In the new
episodes the outstanding team proves the
eternal truth: It’s only those who do nothing
that make no mistake. Certainly, they do not
make mistakes…

Ten years ago, the Café told the story of three
girlfriends and a man of tragic ending. In
2008, the world of the Café is revived with the
director promising real problems and thoughtprovoking situations. In addition to the new
stories of the new characters the heroes of
the past also appear. Once again they tempt
their destiny by giving yet another chance to
themselves to believe that man cannot step
twice into the same river. The Café opens after
a major refurbishing; it has now two owners,
Mari, the daughter of the old owner and Ági, a
former school-mate. They have been running
the place jointly for years and finally now they
could rebuild it and realize their dreams. On the
opening day the regular patrons appear; some
strange characters, each of them bringing
along their own common, but sometimes
incredible stories… meanwhile there is music
all the time…
The successful Hungarian comedy series „In
Angel’s Skin” shows the comical side of the
military service in 13 episodes.
This film follows the great tradition of
Hungarian family movies. As opposed to
numerous American films ostensibly for the
young, this movie satisfies a long-felt need
for youth films while offering a high-quality
entertainment.
The main character of the story is Georgina
Vitay, the daughter of a general, who is hiding
at a rural faith-based girls’ school in the last
year of World War II, because her father is an
active participant in the Hungarian resistance
movement and is threatened with arrest. Right
on the first day Gina realizes that here, in this
hidden place, far away from the world, lots
of peculiar things happen. Although others
ostracize her, she maintains one remaining
hope, the mysterious Abigail who helps
everyone.
Based on a family saga written by famous
Hungarian author Magda Szabó, this miniseries tells the story of several generations
of a wealthy Hungarian family. Shot in the
style of old-fashioned photographs, it is a
truly unique television experience.
The main character of the crime series is a
one-of-a-kind police dog. The film was made
in 1976 and features Kántor, the illustrious
four-legged detective, who managed to
charm his audience more than 20 years
before his Austrian colleague, Rex.

Members of the Wild Goose boy scout troop
conspire to track down the little monkeys
stolen from the Zoo. They try to correct
everything that was fouled up by naughty,
troublemaker adults. Their path is crossed
time and again by the possessed Bagameri,
a disguised, scheming ice-cream vendor,
who is out to get the award promised for
the monkeys.
Acting on the order of the patriotic (kuruc)
captain Adam Béri Balogh, the astute
Máté Eke gathers the peasants. They start
raiding the labanc forces from their base in
the Castle of Tenkes hill. They cause lots of
complications to the emperor blue (labanc)
Colonel of Siklós and later even take over his
castle. Máté continues the fight against the
labanc army as the captain of Siklós.
The hero of the film is a little boy.
Overprotected by his parents, he cannot even
go to pioneer camp. In the summer break
he is allowed to visit a relative near Small
Balaton. His host shows him the beauty of
nature. The holiday has only one condition:
he has to study well.
Móric Benyovszky hussar captain is having
a great time at the ball of the Viennese royal
court. He is on his way home, when his
footman Máté informs him that his house
at Verbó was taken by his brothers–in-law.
Benyovszky goes to Verbó to negotiate with
the Ocsay brothers who are happy to offer
their help. Tamás Omachel warns his friends
against any thoughtless steps to retake the
house by force, but offers his own residence
instead. Anna Lentulay is Tamás’ fiancée, but
is secretly in love with her childhood friend,
Móric Benyovszky. The earl refuses her and
the girl commits suicide. Tamás can never
forgive Benyovszky for the death of the girl.
The multi-plot story begins on the eve of the
18th century. Pál Görgey is the vice prefect of
Szepes County. Having widowed early, he is a
lone wolf with a confused soul. He is waiting
for the New Year in a gloomy mood while
the city of Lőcse celebrates the new century
with festivities. The lead casting tradition
of the New Year’s Eve, however, spoils the
party of the town`s elders with an ominous
prediction. The New Year hunt of the next day
indeed ends in tragedy. This is how a long
feud starts: the vice prefect first fights for
the power of the county held by the nobility
and later for his mere survival. The citizens of
Lőcse fight to maintain their Saxon privileges
and for their city.
This romantic story takes place in Hungary
around Lake Fertő during the days of
Napoleon. Earl Vavel chose this location
to hide the French crown princess from
Napoleon and the French revolution. A spy,
Karolin who was sent to track them down
falls in love with the earl, although her
mission is to abduct the disguised princess.
Napoleon’s army reaches Hungary and
the earl goes to fight joining the Hungarian
nobility and unsuspectingly entrusts Katalin
to the care of Marie.

adventure
Count János Buttler hurries home for the
holidays to his parents and to his love. On
his way, he stops at the house of Baron
Dőry where he falls into a devious trap.
In the presence of false witnesses, he is
forcefully married to the pregnant daughter
of Baron Dőry. The priest celebrating the
marriage is the father of the child to be
born. Although Buttler and his family and
friends do everything to annul the marriage,
the Church and the royal court resist for fear
of losing their authority. This forces János
Buttler and his love to choose a different
route to get a divorce. The film version of
the successful novel of Kálmán Mikszáth
starring unforgettable giants of Hungarian
cinema.
The three-part TV film based on the novel of
Jókai portrays five students from Debrecen:
Kálmán Jenőy, Pali Barkó, Sándor Bíróczi,
Mihály Borcsay and Feri Csuka. They
are expelled from college for editing the
rebellious “csittvári” chronicle, upon which
the five boys set off for “that endless nothing
called the world “. From here, the story
proceeds by focusing on the fate of Kálmán
Jenőy.
The widow, Mrs. Tarnóczy is dead set on
choosing a husband for her daughter who
has just come of age. She therefore bans
Kálmán Mikes, the childhood playmate of
her daughter from entering their palace. His
older brother János, recently returned from
abroad where he served as a guard, comes
up with a mischievous plan to help out the
inconsolable Kálmán.
Captain Széchenyi is wandering around in
Europe collecting interesting experiences and
having romantic adventures. Upon returning
to Vienna, however, he starts thinking about
marriage seriously. The mother of his chosen
girl refuses his marriage proposal on account
of his infamous love affairs. Emotional turmoil
is cut short when Széchenyi is summoned by
his regiment. As a Hussar captain he comes
to know his homeland and its troubles better.
He also finds himself in conflict with associates
and principals alike. He meets Wesselényi, a
Transylvanian magnate just at the right time.
They decide to go to England to study horse
breeding and so Széchenyi leaves behind his
regiment.
The film starts in an idyllic milieu, the White
Peacock, a garden restaurant owned by Mrs.
Jahodovszka a Polish immigrant. The place
is cheered up by the adolescent daughter of
the landlady, Sipsirica, who is always around
chatting with the regulars at their tables. One
day, however, the regulars wait in vain for
the innocent little girl with the r bright smile.
Her strict mother sends her from the “city of
sins” to Krakow to her aunt to the deepest
disappointment of teacher Druzsba, the
godfather of Sipsirica. The school duties of
teacher Druzsba, however, soon call him to
Upper-Hungary. On the road, he discovers
something that not only outrages him, but
turns the honest, puritan teacher into a rebel.
In the 1830’s, Vienna-controlled Hungary
experiences another depressed historical
period. The quiet solitude of the Hungarian
Great Plain spotted by small farms is
stirred up by the rule of the gendarmes
and persecutors believed to be invincible.
Tension between the authority and the people
is palpable. And so the legend of the betyárs
(highwaymen) was born, among them, the
legend of Sándor Rózsa, who became an
infamous bringer of justice around the plains
of Szeged.

documentary series
This ambitious series presents the history
of Hungary in 46 episodes. The Hungarian
Television offers an exciting intellectual
adventure instead of stories taken from
schoolbooks. With assistance from
historians and the presenter György Nagy,
viewers are invited to become explorers and
take a fresh look at already known facts that
might not have been previously processed on
a conscious level.
60 Andrássy Street. There is hardly any other
place in Hungary which became more of a
symbol of oppression and terror. The building
served as the headquarters for the repressive
machineries of two murderous dictatorships.
It is no coincidence that in February 2002, a
museum, a research centre and a monument
were established here for the simultaneous
presentation of the two totalitarian systems
of the 20th century. The documentary „The
Past Confessed”, follows the history of the
institution from the time when the museum’s
idea was first conceived through the present
day.
The documentary focuses on folk traditions,
which for thousands of years were the only
method of healing. Today these traditions
experience a renaissance that makes our
documentary particularly timely. Our crew
visited 40 locations and covered 6,000
kilometers in order to document and present
the ancient folk traditions. The three films
were shot all over the Carpathian basin,
on the picturesque slopes and in villages
of Hungary, Transylvania in Romania and
Transcarpathia in Ukraine. The people
appearing in the film are Hungarian-speaking
locals as well as ethnographers, researchers
of folk medicine, herbalists, phytotherapists
and doctors.
The Carpathian Basin situated in the middle of
Europe, is unparalleled in terms of biodiversity.
The development of this rich wildlife was made
possible by varied climate, topography and
soil.
Amongst the numerous animal species, there
are some that are only endemic to this region.
They evolved in the Carpathian Basin or arrived
from distant landscapes in the distant past and
started their unique evolutionary route here.
There are very few countries in the world
with as many stereotypes and contradictions
as China. When we talk about the country of
silk, tea and the Great Wall, people generally
visualize the exotic legends of imperial
dynasties, the varied forms of martial arts,
the horrors of the Mao era and the picture
of an ever growing future industrial world
power.
This film was shot over a period of four years.
It introduces these rare and special animals
and their behavior with the help of unparalleled
film material never seen before on screen. A
wildlife documentary on animals living in the
heart of Europe that belong to some of the
rarest species on Earth.
Why would a European man travel to Africa
if he is not an explorer, nor a missionary, or a
business man, if he does not want to educate
and is not a member of a humanitarian
organization? As the saying goes: “There are
two types of people, one who loves Africa and
one who has never been there.”
József Sáfrány has visited the black continent
plenty of times with his camera. This time
he follows the footsteps of Dr. Livingstone,
world-famous Scottish doctor-missionary,
throughout the nine episodes of his
documentary series.

Thirteen days of the 1956 revolution of
Hungary come to life as seen by a young
couple and their friends in this fiction film that
features pseudo-archive amateur footages
mixed with present-day images.
Eduardo Rózsa Flores was a journalist who
became a soldier. He was born in Bolivia of
a Hungarian father and a Spanish mother.
He arrived to the South Slav war as the
Spanish-language correspondent of the BBC
and then decided to join the Croatian side
as a volunteer fighter. András Kepes visited
the war zone with Eduardo for the first time
while the fighting was in progress in ’97, now
we wanted to find out if peace could exist
after the war.
Holodomor – is a symbol of the massive
starvation of people in Ukraine. According
to reliable estimates at least eight million
people, including three million children,
died of starvation in Ukraine during the
infamous five hundred days some 75 years
ago, as a consequence of compulsory
food procurement and confiscations by the
Stalinist regime. Generations died off and
several million people suffered long-term
health effects. The horrors experienced
wounded the soul of forty million people.
The entire population of cities and villages
died after horrible suffering in a time when
men ate men.
Animated film of popular folk wisdoms and
tricks. Why don’t women have beard, and
why do women make the bed? In the year of
the Bible, the Hungarian Television made a
unique animation program of the Peasant
Bible, one of the most popular collections
of all times. Commentary is provided to the
animated stories by ethnographers Ilona
Nagy and Annamária Lammel.
Coauthors Lammel and Nagy have been
collecting the stories of their book from
peasants for more than fifteen years
visiting Hungarian-speaking regions from
Burgenland to Transylvania.
Glimpses to a bygone age of Twenty Years
Ago... In this episode we both try to make ends
meet. In the decade of the 80’s we realized that
the economic miracle of socialist Hungary
was burning up our forint reserves fast and
saw our incomes diminish in value. While
we slowly learned the difference between
social welfare and subsistence minimum,
we purchased more refrigerators, washing
machines, video recorders and cars than ever
before. We started to live up our future. But
first let us take a glimpse at the Newsreel in
last week of September 1989.
The documentary examines women’s bags
in their full complexities. It explores the
origins and ancestors of modern handbags
from a cultural history aspect. It also traces
a sociological thread: how the handbag had
been “wandering” among social classes
until it reached its final “destination”. The
documentary also looks at handbags
from a fashion history aspect of: what was
considered fashionable in a particular period
and what was the ideal handbag in the past...
The film shows how contemporary fashion
designers approach this everlasting piece
and what problems they will have to tackle
in order to meet the demands of the 21st
century. And last but not least it is also
discussed how the outfit and the handbag,
as accessory relate

The atmosphere of historical past, baronial comfort,
old stories and secrets make a time journey even
more exciting when we visit palaces. In Hungary
the first solitary palaces in the country, more or
less equipped with defense works, were only in
the 17th century. Most of the buildings were erected
in the 19th century after the total expulsion of the
Turks, in the period of the Rococo style. There used
to be 4,500 palaces and manor houses all over
Hungary, a lot of which were destroyed by the
storms of history, but century-old walls of about
3,500 buildings are still intact. Today, more than
fifty of the old palaces and manor houses serve as
hotels welcoming guests with the simultaneous
experience of the atmosphere of the historical past
and its luxury, along with the pampering of body and
soul that our modern age can offer. The program
presents some of the famous Hungarian palaces.
Once they were homes of the clans and
families of the nobility; often they defended
an area or an entire part of the country from
the enemy, be it Turkish or German. Eger and
Sárospatak, Szigliget, Ozora, Hollókő and
Gyula, Siklós, Szigetvár, or Csobánc, Füzér
and Regéc, Sárvár and Sümeg, Visegrád,
Nagyvázsony and Tata are all names that
in the mind of small school children evoke
scenes of heroic battles in defense of our
castles. The program presents some of
famous castles of Hungary.
Hungary has 10 national parks, 145 minor
nature reserves and 35 landscape protection
areas. This series provides a guided tour
of the most beautiful natural treasures of
Hungary, including their unique landscapes
and wildlife.
The Lutheran churches, in addition to housing
congregations, also are the embodiment of
architectural and artistic values and carry
the message of bygone times. The history
of a church is also closely intertwined with
the history, the present and the past of a
given settlement. In a certain sense, despite
their modest dimensions, they demonstrate
historical periods and the struggles and daily
life of our country.
Two typical spoiled urban kids visit the real
Hungarian countryside. They explore a world
where they have never been before. They
get up at hours when they usually just finish
partying in Budapest. Their normally cool
and hip clothes suddenly feel completely
uncomfortable and ridiculous as they start
their adventures in a small and remote
Hungarian village. They are forced to work
with people whom they would normally avoid
and they have to do things which they have
never dreamed of...
Margat is a film about the largest crusader
fort in the world. Following the first crusades
in 12th-13th centuries, European settlers
founded their own states on the Syrian coast
that were defended by enormous forts. By
far the largest and strongest of these was
Margat, a stronghold of the Knight Hospitaller.
What drew these knights to Margat and how
did they live in their gigantic castle? With the
help of plans, 3D animation, excerpts from
contemporary chronicles and reconstructed
scenes, we are able to travel back 800 years
and gain a unique insight into the history of
the great crusades.

Busy and Body are two full-size puppets
brought to life by two adult actors resembling
children’s drawings. They are colorful,
cheerful and lovable characters. No matter
how much they argue, they are still very
good friends. Each episode is built around
a given situation with funny dialogues and
an additional educational angle for children.
Humor is derived from the characters and
situations in a way that 4-5-year-old children
can understand them, while it also entertains
the 6-9-year-old audience or even older
viewers.
The series presents folk music arrangements by the Silver-Stream
band in an animated film series. The music is rooted in acoustic,
electronic, folk, pop, Latin and rock music base while respecting the
original text of folk songs. This cartoon makes folk culture easily
consumable and entertaining for generations that were socialized
in popular culture. In the anachronistic stories the romanticism
of the “hussar” era mixes with contemporary social issues and
some solutions are to be found to the challenges of the future.
Soon to be available in Hungarian and English. The English texts
are performed by the band in English, while the original Hungarian
folk songs are subtitled.

Ubul is the hidden hero of cinema.
Ubul can’t avoid getting in the middle of the well-known movies and
ruining them. How he visits the Bates motel, how he escapes the
Titanic or how he defeats the Terminator are just some of his stories.
However we change the storylines, the movies remain recognizable.
We mix Ubul’s adventures with the world of the original motion
pictures and create a colorful but coherent visual fantasy.

is only disturbed by the appearance of Frakk the dog. Their sofar idyllic existence turns into a living hell. Fortunately, the dog is
not the brightest and the clever cats manage to take revenge by
playing some nasty tricks on him. A take on the classic cat and dog
opposition by Hungarian fairy tale writer Ágnes Bálint.
Süsü is a young dragon who has only one head, so he is shunned and
chased away by his family. On his search for a friend he encounters
the Prince. When they get near a town threatened by the ‘terrible
dragon’, the Prince defeats his friend Süsü in a mock fight and wins
the hand of the Princess. Later on, the Prince and the Princess
become King and Queen and Süsü the best friend of their son, the
Little Prince. Then, the kind one-headed dragon himself falls in love
with a dragoness...
This successful animation series has been

depicts the adventures of an ordinary family
facing extraordinary adventures, including
space travel.

Cute animated TV series based on the children’s books of István
Csukás. It tells the story of Pom-Pom, a hairy creature that could
be best compared to a wig, who becomes friends with a schoolgirl
named Bogyó (“Berry”). We follow her stories about other, equally
bizarre creatures and their adventures on her way to school. The
series is light-hearted and educational entertainment for children.
Pityke, a real policeman solves all kinds of problems by outwitting

Toby is a pleasant and loveable creature who always gets into some

indestructible thanks to his ability to change his body shape and
