Based on a true story about love, passion, sex, power and murder. Schoolchildren’s books are filled with works written by those giants of literature who were churning out masterpieces while sitting in once famous cafés. Our story is not about them. Our film commemorates the pulp fiction writers so typical of the age. Those mostly forgotten authors flooded the fans of easy reading and fun stories with innumerable cheap Westerns, pulp fiction about the French Foreign Legion, and detective and romantic adventure stories. The moneyless scribblers often paid what they had consumed on that day by giving the headwaiter a fresh chapter from their serial novels. Our hero, Plock is the uncrowned king of pulp fiction. He was not older than 23 when he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Actually, he won it from a famous Swedish author in a card game called Macau. Plock is a real big shot. He is the unofficial holder of the world speed record of novel writing in coffee houses. But Plock is in a big trouble now. But what a disappointment! While his volume It Hurts Me receives very bad criticism, readers are not open, either, to Plock’s soul-tormenting poetry. If he cannot repay the money to the Armenian before 6 p.m., he will not only lose his regular table in the café but the wicked Armenian owner will also tell Plock’s bride, Evelin that he had spent the loan to buy a house, on his literary venture. Georges, the wicked and rich owner of Pepita Publishing House who has been in hopeless love with the girl for long, would eventually get a real chance to seduce Evelin. The Armenian gives Plock a last chance: if he helps the Armenian’s youngest son, a talentless idiot called Gerzson to finish writing his first novel until 6 p.m., he will not only waive from reclaiming the debt but will buy 500 pieces of the book It Hurts Me. Our film follows this impossible mission as Plock and Gerzson write the crime story The Curse of the Black Mummy. Rich not only in literary excitements, our story revivifies the most well-known genres of pulp fiction in the coffee house that turns into a Western saloon and an Arabian sheik’s tent, then the dreadful scene of a ghost story. This movie salutes Jenő Rejtő, the greatest Hungarian pulp fiction author while taking spectators behind the scenes of creative work. This film presents you a crooked mirror in which not only writers but everybody can recognise themselves in one way or another. 6 7 house of the stone monkeys kőmajmok háza 80’ 2014 NEW Kornél has asthma. He only gets to watch other boys playing football. He is soon joined by a strange girl, who wants to know “who put the stone on his chest”. Kornél tries to shake her off at first, but she insists on telling him that his asthma is obviously caused by a dragon living in the same building. When Kornél challenges her eccentric assertion, she tells him that the stone monkeys on the front gate protect the building from evil spirits called peritons, whose sole aim is to persecute the magicos living within. The young girl soon spots a van that parks outside the house every day but no one ever gets out. The sign on the side of the van reads: Mr. Shadow. Izabella tells Kornél that the dragon living in the house is none other than Mr. Dragomán, whose name needs no explanation. Mr. Dragomán’s flat catches fire in the middle of the night, and the old boy is carted off to hospital. The kids see that the ambulance belongs to the Saint George Foundation. They look this up on the internet and are shocked to discover that Saint George slew a dragon with his spear. The young duo find their way to the hospital that Izabella thinks is a periton venture. Mr. Dragomán is hooked up to machines and cannot talk, so Izabella interprets the old dragon’s thoughts (she is actually a lizard, so she can speak his secret language). She claims that Mr. Dragomán says that it was not him who put the stone on Kornél’s chest. Then who was it? He does not want to say but eventually admits that it was none other than Kornél’s father. Kornél hurries home and quizzes his distraught mother about his father’s whereabouts. His mother tells him that she does not know where he is and neither does she want to know because he is “not a good man”. Kornél presses her until she admits that his father sent him presents for his last five birthdays, but she never passed them on to him. The present intended for his ninth birthday includes an old diary of a “wanderer”. Kornél reads this and comes to the conclusion that his father, who is also a magical wanderer, was kidnapped by peritons when he vanished five years ago. Kornél walks over to the periton’s van (Mr. Shadow), and tries to open the door but the periton starts the engine and speeds away. Kornél tracks the van down to an 8 TV MOVIES TV MOVIES tv movie abandoned factory. He carries on looking until he stumbles into a loft apartment decked out with rosemary (the wanderers’ plant). He then comes face to face with the periton, who smiles and offers him a football. “I wanted to give you your tenth birthday present in person,” the man says. Kornél has an asthma attack and passes out. When he wakes again, he is in his own bed at home. His mother is sitting by his bed with the man he thought was a periton, but who he now discovers is his father. It turns out that his father became addicted to a prescribed drug five years earlier, and broke into a pharmacy. Instead of a prison sentence, he was given the option of rehab. A court order meant that he was unable to approach his son in person and that is why he watched him from the street every day from the secrecy of his work wan. His mom eventually agrees to let Kornél see his father on a regular basis. Kornél is happy but at the same time a little disappointed because he now knows that all Izabella’s stories were a figment of her overactive imagination, and he is not in fact a wanderer. The story ends as father and son set off to have a game of football. Immediately upon arrival, Norbi threw him into deep water, more exactly into a real bear cave. Bear tracking gained momentum just after this. They grow very slowly and hence they live for very long. Simply by existing they provide shelter and food for thousands of other creatures. Trees are so different from other life forms that sometimes they look as if they were out of this world. Their time is spent on a different scale. For them, a day is like a moment; a season is like an hour and a year is like a single day. 52’ 2014 The personal story of an oak tree This story is about an oak tree. A giant which a lot of interesting things have happened to, even though it has been standing in the same place for centuries. After spending some time with his master, Livius started for a real challenge: he ventured into the wilderness alone and set his cameras at various places to observe the life of the forest. Livius has learnt a lot from the locals, people who during the centuries got accustomed to living in close proximity to wild game. The presence of bears and wolves is natural for them, just like blue sky or green grass. It is a knowledge without which you cannot live in harmony with nature. It is also a knowledge that we try to pass on. This is why this film was made. During his epic journeys he tries to trace, peek and capture with his special cameras the habitat that has been around for thousands of years. He is also concerned about learning the kind of tricks and survival strategies that were developed by small and large creatures living there before and currently. Filming locations include UNESCO World Heritage sites like the caves of Aggtelek Karst, Hortobágy National Park, the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians, Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See) and some majestic landscapes like the High Tatra Mountains, gorges in Transylvania, the River Danube and one of the oldest oak tree of the Carpathian Basin in the Transdanubian Gerecse Hills. To take a great photograph of an uncooperative subject -like a bird for example- is even harder. But to take the perfect image of a bird in the midst of breathtaking behavior is practically impossible. Bence Máté, however, knows the trick for he is invisible! To the bird’s eye, at least. In the western access areas to Hungary life had speeded up - there are windmills, motorways, big cities and industrial parks all over the place. Yet, something is hiding between them. This is an enormous coneshaped alluvial deposit with tiny villages, forests, and river branches. On one side of this region is today’s Szigetköz. Flowing out of the Alps and the Carpathians the Danube River created this inland delta unique in Europe. Arriving at the plain, the river broke into wide branches where unparalleled fauna developed. These days the river cannot change its course as freely as it used to in the old days. The decisive change came about some twenty years ago with the diversion of the river and the building of the hydroelectric plant of Bős. Seeing the grip of the built-in surroundings, the question is obvious: can the fauna preserve its former abundance? At 16, Bence won his first prize at BBC’s prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. At age 25 - with more international awards under his belt - he continues to surprise the world with stunning wildlife images. Bence Máté has a special talent in hiding, hence his amazing success. The Invisible Wildlife Photographer simply disappears in one of his specially designed photography hides, from where he can enjoy, observe and - to the delight of most of us - capture what he sees. Birds and other animals are entirely unaware that Bence is close by, thus allowing him to photograph them in unique and rarely seen moments of intimate behaviors. A unique window on both bird behavior and stunning imagery, as well as the ‘secrets’ of Bence’s success, are showcased in this revealing documentary. Apart from introducing plant seeds, fall and spring soil works, planting, summer activities and harvesting are also discussed. We regularly visit the school garden where the students, with the help of a professional, take care of the plants even during summer break. We accompany adults and kids to celebrations that are determining events of peasant lifestyle and we participate in a winter chasing carnival and a pilgrim travel to Szentkút. We follow the program that started in the fall of 2012 when cultivation started even in the backyards of the Roma that had been neglected for so long. The documentary film shows a slice of the state security operations of the Kádár-regime from a completely new aspect. It is the first time that a former spymaster speaks openly, including details about spying on the Catholic Church. The film breaks fresh ground by using confrontation and unvarnished dialogue and thereby rendering an authentic picture of the objectives of the state security forces, the recruitment of informers and the applied coercive methods. The protagonist is a former police officer, “the spymaster”, who recruited and kept contact with innumerable secret agents. His area of expertise was the “fight against the reactionary church”. It recalls the final days in the life of one of history’s greatest composer and the eternal mystery of the relationship between artist and muse. It is a story of passionate love, death, immortality and unconditional devotion. In 1911, to mark the centenary of Ferenc Liszt’s birth and the 25th anniversary of his death, a Budapest theatre is preparing for the premiere of a play recalling the composer’s final days in Bayreuth. On one occasion, a mysterious woman appears during a rehearsal, asserting that the play does not correspond to reality and that Liszt did not die as we know from various novels and recollections. The actors want to learn the truth, and so the woman reveals the painfully beautiful relationship between Liszt and one of his last pupils, Lina Schmalhausen, which lasted from the middle of the 1870s to his death. The film relates to the life and career of Vilmos Zsolnay, a worldfamous potter, founder of modern Hungarian ceramics and inventor of the lustrous glaze known as eosin. Set in the second half of the 19th century, we visit Hungary during an era of great technical advancement and intellectual prosperity. Zsolnay’s father wants the young Vilmos to become a merchant but his exuberant son has very different plans. He tries his hand at painting, imagines his future in art and spends much of his time talking to his long-dead sister in her room. Then an enigmatic old man from Italy appears who has haunted him since his teenage years. Vilmos’ brother, himself a man of the world, founds a pottery in the town but fails to find contentment in his work, so eventually leaves the factory to Vilmos. It is then that the mysterious Italian gives him the secret recipe for the glaze to a vase from Gubbio, which radically changes the course of Vilmos Zsolnay’s life. On May 5, 1936, celebrated author Frigyes Karinthy undergoes brain surgery in Stockholm. Frici, a 16-year-old boy appears before him in the operating theatre. Karinthy sees himself. The young man beckons the writer who is drifting between life and death into a strange world. The author’s childhood experiences come alive before him - the same experiences he had immortalized before in his novel Tanár úr kérem (Please Sir!). The oppressive proximity of his passing brings a new perspective to these nostalgic reminiscences. Karinthy wonders in consternation through this inverted world as Frici falls in love, becomes embroiled in conflict with his teacher, fails Hungarian class and appears destined for military school. Eventually, he too develops into a writer. Only one question remains: Was Karinthy’s operation a success and will he return to the world of the living? It is an artificial world through which Krúdy depicts the decadent, helpless characters of his time with some criticism. The Turks are demanding further taxes from Prince Apafi who sends them two hundred gold coins to be handed over by Kristóf Szitáry. Szitáry takes his two sons along and on their way they stay at the house of the merchant Piszliczár, who steals from Szitáry. Since everybody thinks that Szitáry is the thief, the Prince jails him and his sons are held hostage by the Turkish pasha. The children escape with the help of Cselebi, then with the help of Pipitér they are preparing to free their father on the Isten Island of the Ecsedi swamps. After numerous adventures, they finally succeed. The new law enforcement team merges the latest information technology with classical investigative techniques. There is a war raging in the world today of which the general public knows nothing. It is not fought with conventional weapons but with computers. The age of the average foot soldier is less than 20 and they are all highly trained hackers. Hacktion is the latest drama series from MTVA - Hungarian Public Media that reveals the inner workings of the Infrastructure Defense Division (IDD). Betti Zsolnay (Szonja Oroszlán) works as a police IT expert and As their name suggests, the department is expected to clear up cases urgently with utmost priority. also happens to be a pretty smart hacker. She is called in to help with a special police operation where a high-ranking military intelligence officer, Colonel Szabo (Tamás Dunai), spots her talent for technology. Betti soon finds herself working for the Infrastructure Defense Division that was formed to fend off internet attacks and track down cyber criminals. She thinks she knows what she has signed up for but it turns out be a whole lot more… 30x52’ 2011-12 András (Ferenc Hujber) is the ace at the Infrastructure Defense Division and the one in charge of all operators. He initially protests against Betti’s rapid recruitment but he soon realizes that he rather likes the new girl. Betti is officially employed by Hacktion Ltd., which acts as the cover organization for the Infrastructure Defense Division, where her cold, professional relationship with András is quickly replaced by an entirely different set of emotions... The crime cases are all IT and internet related, but during the actual investigation they use old-school, analogue methods. The new season is based on the latest trends in criminology, the most efficient, integrated application of so-called online and offline investigative tools. Every episode tells a separate case which is solved by the end of the episode. The only theme that loosely links the episodes together is the personal micro stories of the main characters. The protagonist is inspector Péter Szondi and an additional lead character joins him in each episode. Apart from serious topics, humor also plays a constructive part in the new season of Hacktion Reloaded. Precision, competency, professionalism. These words form the least apt description of the Labor Inspectorate and its staff, who – even in the middle of the greatest chaos – tend to make their own trifling problems and personal conflicts a priority above their work. Truly, work never stops in the office, but it is so because it never started in the first place. The lovable office personnel carry on with their activities with the same enthusiasm as we have already got used to, which might be considered as proper work process by the unsuspecting viewer. The main character of the unlikely situations is Elvira, the leader of the inspectorate, who is “the oldest piece of furniture” in the office. There are János, the dedicated, hypochondriac bureaucrat who tries to write his name into history under her leadership, Katalin, the half-educated HR assistant, who is suffering from the lack of men in her life. Albert is still struggling with his alcohol addiction, but is able to produce a great pile of unnecessary official papers in order to veil his inadequacy. Timi, the lively, ginger – otherwise incredibly “blonde” – receptionist is still unable to keep anything in mind. There is an important role for Tamás, the top manager of our time, who is a consultant from the private sector. In the new season, Karesz, the shabby trainee returns. He is the latest workforce with a fresh degree after nine grievous years at university whose first workplace is the „Office of Labor and Space Security” hence does not take his duties that seriously. This film follows the great tradition of Hungarian family movies. As opposed to numerous American films ostensibly for the young, this movie satisfies a long-felt need for youth films while offering a high-quality entertainment. The main character of the story is Georgina Vitay, the daughter of a general, who is hiding at a rural faith-based girls’ school in the last year of World War II, because her father is an active participant in the Hungarian resistance movement and is threatened with arrest. Right on the first day Gina realizes that here, in this hidden place, far away from the world, lots of peculiar things happen. Although others ostracize her, she maintains one remaining hope, the mysterious Abigail who helps everyone. Based on a family saga written by famous Hungarian author Magda Szabó, this miniseries tells the story of several generations of a wealthy Hungarian family. Shot in the style of old-fashioned photographs, it is a truly unique television experience. The main character of the crime series is a one-of-a-kind police dog. The film was made in 1976 and features Kántor, the illustrious four-legged detective, who managed to charm his audience more than 20 years before his Austrian colleague, Rex. The three-part TV film based on the novel of Jókai portrays five students from Debrecen: Kálmán Jenőy, Pali Barkó, Sándor Bíróczi, Mihály Borcsay and Feri Csuka. They are expelled from college for editing the rebellious “csittvári” chronicle, upon which the five boys set off for “that endless nothing called the world “. From here, the story proceeds by focusing on the fate of Kálmán Jenőy. The widow, Mrs. Tarnóczy is dead set on choosing a husband for her daughter who has just come of age. She therefore bans Kálmán Mikes, the childhood playmate of her daughter from entering their palace. His older brother János, recently returned from abroad where he served as a guard, comes up with a mischievous plan to help out the inconsolable Kálmán. Captain Széchenyi is wandering around in Europe collecting interesting experiences and having romantic adventures. Upon returning to Vienna, however, he starts thinking about marriage seriously. The mother of his chosen girl refuses his marriage proposal on account of his infamous love affairs. Emotional turmoil is cut short when Széchenyi is summoned by his regiment. As a Hussar captain he comes to know his homeland and its troubles better. He also finds himself in conflict with associates and principals alike. He meets Wesselényi, a Transylvanian magnate just at the right time. They decide to go to England to study horse breeding and so Széchenyi leaves behind his regiment. The film starts in an idyllic milieu, the White Peacock, a garden restaurant owned by Mrs. Jahodovszka a Polish immigrant. The place is cheered up by the adolescent daughter of the landlady, Sipsirica, who is always around chatting with the regulars at their tables. One day, however, the regulars wait in vain for the innocent little girl with the r bright smile. Her strict mother sends her from the “city of sins” to Krakow to her aunt to the deepest disappointment of teacher Druzsba, the godfather of Sipsirica. The school duties of teacher Druzsba, however, soon call him to Upper-Hungary. On the road, he discovers something that not only outrages him, but turns the honest, puritan teacher into a rebel. In the 1830’s, Vienna-controlled Hungary experiences another depressed historical period. The quiet solitude of the Hungarian Great Plain spotted by small farms is stirred up by the rule of the gendarmes and persecutors believed to be invincible. There is hardly any other place in Hungary which became more of a symbol of oppression and terror. The building served as the headquarters for the repressive machineries of two murderous dictatorships. It is no coincidence that in February 2002, a museum, a research centre and a monument were established here for the simultaneous presentation of the two totalitarian systems of the 20th century. The documentary „The Past Confessed”, follows the history of the institution from the time when the museum’s idea was first conceived through the present day. The documentary focuses on folk traditions, which for thousands of years were the only method of healing. Today these traditions experience a renaissance that makes our documentary particularly timely. Our crew visited 40 locations and covered 6,000 kilometers in order to document and present the ancient folk traditions. The three films were shot all over the Carpathian basin, on the picturesque slopes and in villages of Hungary, Transylvania in Romania and Transcarpathia in Ukraine. The people appearing in the film are Hungarian-speaking locals as well as ethnographers, researchers of folk medicine, herbalists, phytotherapists and doctors. The Carpathian Basin situated in the middle of Europe, is unparalleled in terms of biodiversity. The development of this rich wildlife was made possible by varied climate, topography and soil. Amongst the numerous animal species, there are some that are only endemic to this region. They evolved in the Carpathian Basin or arrived from distant landscapes in the distant past and started their unique evolutionary route here. There are very few countries in the world with as many stereotypes and contradictions as China. When we talk about the country of silk, tea and the Great Wall, people generally visualize the exotic legends of imperial dynasties, the varied forms of martial arts, the horrors of the Mao era and the picture of an ever growing future industrial world power. This film was shot over a period of four years. It introduces these rare and special animals and their behavior with the help of unparalleled film material never seen before on screen. A wildlife documentary on animals living in the heart of Europe that belong to some of the rarest species on Earth. Why would a European man travel to Africa if he is not an explorer, nor a missionary, or a business man, if he does not want to educate and is not a member of a humanitarian organization? Glimpses to a bygone age of Twenty Years Ago... In this episode we both try to make ends meet. In the decade of the 80’s we realized that the economic miracle of socialist Hungary was burning up our forint reserves fast and saw our incomes diminish in value. While we slowly learned the difference between social welfare and subsistence minimum, we purchased more refrigerators, washing machines, video recorders and cars than ever before. We started to live up our future. But first let us take a glimpse at the Newsreel in last week of September 1989. The documentary examines women’s bags in their full complexities. It explores the origins and ancestors of modern handbags from a cultural history aspect. It also traces a sociological thread: how the handbag had been “wandering” among social classes until it reached its final “destination”. The documentary also looks at handbags from a fashion history aspect of: what was considered fashionable in a particular period and what was the ideal handbag in the past... The film shows how contemporary fashion designers approach this everlasting piece and what problems they will have to tackle in order to meet the demands of the 21st century. In Hungary the first solitary palaces in the country, more or less equipped with defense works, were only in the 17th century. Most of the buildings were erected in the 19th century after the total expulsion of the Turks, in the period of the Rococo style. There used to be 4,500 palaces and manor houses all over Hungary, a lot of which were destroyed by the storms of history, but century-old walls of about 3,500 buildings are still intact. Today, more than fifty of the old palaces and manor houses serve as hotels welcoming guests with the simultaneous experience of the atmosphere of the historical past and its luxury, along with the pampering of body and soul that our modern age can offer. The program presents some of the famous Hungarian palaces. Once they were homes of the clans and families of the nobility; often they defended an area or an entire part of the country from the enemy, be it Turkish or German. Eger and Sárospatak, Szigliget, Ozora, Hollókő and Gyula, Siklós, Szigetvár, or Csobánc, Füzér and Regéc, Sárvár and Sümeg, Visegrád, Nagyvázsony and Tata are all names that in the mind of small school children evoke scenes of heroic battles in defense of our castles. The program presents some of famous castles of Hungary. Hungary has 10 national parks, 145 minor nature reserves and 35 landscape protection areas. This series provides a guided tour of the most beautiful natural treasures of Hungary, including their unique landscapes and wildlife. The Lutheran churches, in addition to housing congregations, also are the embodiment of architectural and artistic values and carry the message of bygone times. The history of a church is also closely intertwined with the history, the present and the past of a given settlement. In a certain sense, despite their modest dimensions, they demonstrate historical periods and the struggles and daily life of our country. Two typical spoiled urban kids visit the real Hungarian countryside. They explore a world where they have never been before. They get up at hours when they usually just finish partying in Budapest. Their normally cool and hip clothes suddenly feel completely uncomfortable and ridiculous as they start their adventures in a small and remote Hungarian village. They are forced to work with people whom they would normally avoid and they have to do things which they have never dreamed of... Margat is a film about the largest crusader fort in the world. Following the first crusades in 12th-13th centuries, European settlers founded their own states on the Syrian coast that were defended by enormous forts.
