They may seem quiet and reserved… until you hear their music. It takes a certain conceit to believe you require a whole orchestra to express yourself. Tonight we meet eight of the tallest poppies in classical music. These guys are kind of a big deal – and don’t they know it! Wagner: Lohengrin: Act III: Prelude Richard Wagner has to be first. He took his composing very seriously and even dressed up for the occasion in expensive silks and satins. He would enter his studio like it was some kind of sacred sanctuary and then sit down to write the most ambitious operas (words and music) that had ever been attempted. This man had no problems with self-belief, and you can hear it in this Prelude, which sizzles with confidence and brash exuberance. Bernstein arr. Mason: West Side Story (excerpt) Leonard Bernstein was a charismatic personality who wanted to do everything: conduct, compose, write, educate. He’d be directing the New York Philharmonic one night, and go to a Jimi Hendrix show the next. His eclectic musical tastes found a perfect outlet in West Side Story: Latin, jazz, pop and classical music all crammed into one amazing score. Mahler: Symphony No 5: Adagietto Gustav Mahler also juggled composing with conducting. His life was already full… and then he fell in love with Alma, another composer. He wrote her this Adagietto, a love letter without words, and sent it to her, and she understood. She agreed to marry him, even though it would mean sacrificing her own musical career for his. Beethoven: Symphony No 5: Allegro Most pictures of Beethoven portray him with a grumpy scowl – but tonight we meet him in a merry mood. He has just defeated Fate (the famous ‘knockknock-knock-knock’ that begins this symphony), and that calls for a big, loud celebration. Beethoven pulls out all the stops to end as emphatically as he can, using trombones in a symphony for the first time and hammering out 36 consecutive C major chords. He was going deaf, and he wanted to hear something. Guy Noble Liszt: Mephisto Waltz With his long hair, charming nature and prodigious talent, Franz Liszt was destined to be a celebrity. Everything about his playing and composing was dramatic. In this piece, Mephisto’s alluring fiddle-playing has Faust dancing into the night with a lady he’s just met. Liszt’s own seductive performances at the piano reportedly had a similar effect – women would lovingly collect locks of his hair, dregs of his coffee and even his cigar stubs. Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro: Overture Mozart, by all accounts, was an entertaining person to be around – restless and lively as a child. Music was a never-ending source of wonder and delight for him, and listening to his music can make anyone feel young again. Mozart’s quick, transparent changes of mood can also be heard – just listen to all the sudden contrasts in this Overture. Strauss: Don Juan (excerpt) With a dash and a flying leap, Richard Strauss burst onto the scene as a 25-year-old with this incredibly vivid orchestral portrait of Don Juan. A carefree man who took everything in his stride, composing seemed almost too easy for Strauss. This piece captures the itinerant life of Don Juan perfectly, following him on his various adventures until destiny finally catches up. Sibelius: Karelia Suite: March Jean Sibelius is the odd composer out here, a private man who liked to be alone in nature, and one who found it increasingly difficult to write the music he wanted (he was effectively silent for the last 30 years of his life). But you won’t hear much of that in this movement from Karelia, a jaunty march whose catchy, optimistic tune quickly made it a Finnish favourite. Wagner: Die Walküre: Ride of the Valkyries That would be the end, but Wagner’s ego demands another hearing! And there’s no stopping those Valkyries once they get going… © David John Lang 2016 COMING UP Classics Unwrapped 3 Guy Noble is a conductor, broadcaster, pianist, writer and producer who loves most genres of music and has played, conducted or talked about most of them. He regularly conducts the ASO, SSO, MSO, WASO, TSO and QSO and has worked with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia, the Hong Kong and Malaysian Philharmonic orchestras. He has been Musical Director and Musical Supervisor of many major musicals including Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, South Pacific, Man of La Mancha, Gypsy, and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Conductor James. Recent performances include Great Opera Hits for Opera Australia (Sydney Opera House), From Vienna With Love with Conchita Wurst (Sydney Symphony) and The Last Night of the Proms (Sydney Symphony). He has recorded 12 CDs for ABC Classics and also presents the classical audio programs on Qantas, Air China and China Airlines. He was the host of the Breakfast show on ABC Classic FM from 1999-2001 and is still a regular guest presenter on the network. He writes a regular column for Limelight Magazine and has worked with a wide variety of international and local artists including Harry Connick Jnr, Ben Folds, The Beach Boys, The Whitlams, The Pointer Sisters, Human Nature, Dianne Reeves, Glenn Frey, Randy Newman, Michael Bolton, Maggie Beer and Simon Bryant, and Clive Wed 02 Nov 6.30PM ADELAIDE TOWN HALL Guy Noble Conductor / Presenter Classics Unwrapped Virtual Reality Concert online now!
