There will be a simple ground breaking ceremony after the 11 a.m. Mass this weekend. While some work will begin this fall, full construction will begin in March. Whereas there is more work that needs to be done on the entire project and money to be raised, we anticipate being in the building itself by the end of next year. I am most grateful to so many people who made this day possible. The list is large, so if I have forgotten anyone please forgive me. Our hearts our grateful and most sincere. God knows who you are, which is the most important thing. First, all of you the parishioners and in particular those who donated to the Parish Life Center, thank you for your generosity and patience. I thank Archbishop Chaput and all those from the Archdiocesan Administration who made this possible, especially: Jim Boch, Marc Fischer and Karen Egelkamp. The members of the Archdiocesan Building Committee under the direction of Father Bob Vogan. The members of the administration and staff of Buckingham Township: Township Supervisors Jon Forest, Maggie Rash and Paul Calderaio Township Solicitor – Craig Smith Township Manager – Dana Cozza Township Engineers – Dan Gray and George Gray Township Director of Building and Code and Fire Marshal – Jim Kettler On the home front, countless hours of great dedication and love, not to mention hard work, were spent on this project. We as a parish are sincerely grateful to: The members of the Parish Building Committee: Dick Clark, Bob Weikel, Tom Verrichia and Ed Zapisek, as well as our staff. Ron Monkres of Gilmore and Associates And our Builders at Neshaminy Constructors, Inc: Tony Canuso and John Eccleston. May God who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion. Our Lady of Guadalupe…pray for us! Sincerely in Our Lord Rev. Monsignor Joseph P. Gentili Pastor, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church It’s interesting Mark adds such detail to the story of Bartimaeus; his gospel, the shortest of the four, typically reports Jesus’ ministry in a more matter-of-fact way. He could have just said Bartimaeus got up and went to Jesus, but instead Mark creates a visual image. We see him throwing off his cloak and springing up, probably with a burst of energy neither he nor his chiding neighbors had ever seen! Bartimaeus is a blind beggar, disdained by society as a sinner. His cloak might be his shelter from the elements, but it serves another purpose as well: it is a place for him to hide his shame, to spare passersby the indignity of having to look upon him. But he senses that, with Jesus, he has a chance. He discards his hiding place for the prospect of healing. The exchange is intimate. Jesus does not assume to know what Bartimaeus wants; he does not judge him. Then, as only Jesus can do, he empowers this beggar with his own healing. Jesus raises this man up to dignity, telling him: “go your way”—i.e., you owe me nothing—“your faith has saved you.” His cloak of shame is forgotten, left by the side of the road. Living the Word… Put yourself in this story. Who are you? Are you Bartimaeus, hiding behind a cloak, a façade, afraid others will see you as you really are? Are you one of his neighbors, anxious and embarrassed by someone or something in your life you’d just as soon have go away? Are you someone in the crowd, caught up in your own goals and desires, blind to the poor lying by the way side? Or are you Jesus, nonjudgmental, empowering others with dignity, expecting nothing in return? Of course, we aspire to be like Jesus, and even though we cannot make the blind see, we can be open and welcoming to those in our families and communities who are suffering in shame. It takes courage to call out to Jesus for help, but by doing so, he sees our faith and empowers us with our own healing. If shame or fear keeps you from seeing the light, seek out a minister, spiritual director, or pastoral counselor to help lead you to Jesus’ embrace. If you are anxious, put off, or blind to the needs of the poor, step out of your comfort zone. Volunteer for a regular shift at a soup kitchen or outreach center. Begin to learn the names, faces, and stories of those who have been cast aside. Allow Jesus to heal your blindness. 2015, Elaine H. Ireland RCIA and Inquiry Sessions Weekly classes are underway for those who are interested in learning more about full initiation into the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil here at OLG. Why do I exist? Where can I find peace? Who is Jesus? Each session has a meal and time with others who are on a similar journey of asking these questions and searching for the answers. Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Annual Essay and Oratory Contests Liturgical Musician Scholar The Liturgical Musician Scholar program will begin in January 2016. The aim of this program is to introduce the young people of our parish to the skills and knowledge necessary to become successful liturgical musicians. Did you know that being able to accompany the liturgy on piano and organ requires much more than just the ability to competently play those instruments? Successful liturgical musicians know the sequence of liturgy, what rites are accompanied by music and where there should be prayerful silence, and how to best provide liturgical music that enhances the prayer and worship of the congregation. Participants who successfully complete the program will be eligible to receive a stipend to substitute as accompanist at OLG masses as needed. The Essay Contest is open to students in 7th through 12th grades and must include a cover page with student’s name, address, phone number, school, and grade level. Entries must be submitted by March 7, 2016. The Oratory Contest is open to high school students in 9th to 12th grades. There is a 500 word limit for grades 7 through 9; for grades 10 through 12 the word limit is 750. Those entering the Oratory Contest must submit a video. Entries must be submitted by April 11, 2016.
