Woodville ISD Board
votes to buy new bus
Have A Safe July Fourth Holiday!
In the regular scheduled meeting of the Woodville ISD
School Board, held Monday, June 18, a public hearing was
held to review and take comments on the Woodville ISD
Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Policy for Technology.
According to Superintendent, Glenn Conner, the Board
must hold the hearing to comply with state funding regulations. Board President, Trey Allison asked for public
comment and having no members of the general public
present there was no comment. The Board then voted to
approve the policy for the upcoming year. Conner told
the board members the policy would affect the students,
teachers and the at- will employees in the district having
access to the internet. This adopted policy will be sent
home with students when they return for the new school
year for their signature as well as their parent or guardian.
Also on the agenda for action from the Board was the
purchase of a new 77 passenger bus. Conner informed
the board members of an accident involving one of the
districts fleet buses at the end of this past school year. This
accident resulted in the bus being a total loss. According
to Cody Jarrott, from the business office, the school will
be paid $10,500 from the insurance company. The cost of
a new bus is over $90,000. Conner told the board the need
for the replacement was necessary. “As we get further into
the school year, being without this bus will cause us issues;
especially on a Friday evenings when we have buses out
on routes and we need four buses to get to a ballgame,”
he explained. After some discussion among the board,
it was voted to purchase the new bus. The money for the
purchase will come from the funds balance. “This is why
you have a funds balance – for emergencies,” said Conner.
During the meeting, Assistant Superintendent Sherry
Kenner gave a report to the board on the Annual Evaluation of English as a Second Language. “This report shows
we are doing a good job on our campuses teaching these
students English as a second language,” she said. When
asked by Allison if she was pleased with the results of the
report, Kenner answered, “I am. This report follows the
progress of these students for two years. I am pleased.”
Board member Jimmy Tucker asked Kenner if the district
was prepared if there was an influx of students who might
need to utilize this program in light of the prospect of
new businesses coming to Tyler County. Kenner assured
the board members the district was prepared.
While addressing the board, Kenner also gave a Character Counts Report. She explained to the board members
Woodville ISD has adopted six pillars of Character Counts
as the framework for character education. The six pillars
are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. She explained these character traits
are reflected in all aspects of the school districts activities
including classroom instruction, discipline, guidance,
and extra-curricular activities. They are also reflected in
activities of administration, food service, maintenance and
transportation. She reported that each campus sponsored

but the fire department quickly controlled
the flames so that it wouldn’t spread.
Entergy Servicemen on the scene reported that a green tree fell through the
line, and the hot wire laying on the ground
started the fire. This is the second fire this
summer that began as a result of fallen
power lines.
Mayor Don Baird called the Colmesneil City Council
to order, Tuesday, June 12 at 7 p.m. Council members in
attendance making up the necessary quorum were Councilwoman Rhonda Harris, Councilman Duane Crews and
Councilman Bubba Sheffield.
The Mayor presented a proposal for action to the Councilmembers for a contract with the Tyler County Hospital
for alcohol and drug testing services for City employees.
According to Baird, the City currently does not have
alcohol or drug testing. Councilman Sheffield asked what
type of policy the city has in place. City Secretary, Carrie
Edwards, advised Council that the city employee policy
manual mandates a drug free workplace. After the discussion, Council voted unanimously to accept the contract
for the alcohol and drug testing. The new testing would
test the city employees at least once a year.
Baird then brought before Council issues of repairs to
the Colmesneil Fire Department Buildings. “A couple
years ago, one of the VFD’s backed a fire truck into one
of the fire department structures. The City presented the
fire department with a bill for the repairs; however, they
have never submitted payment. Since then, the City has
had the repairs made to the building. Now, we have no
choice but to bill the fire district for the charges incurred
for the repairs. I don’t want to see the district have to pay
for these charges; I want the VFD to pay for the damage
they caused,” said Baird.
Still on the topic of the Colmesneil VFD, Baird showed
Council photos of the inside condition of the fire station.
The photos indicated housekeeping issues. “I have talked

Ruling on health law prompts responses
AUSTIN — Texas public officeholders reacted quickly to the U.S.
Supreme Court’s June 28 ruling on the
federal Patient
Protection and
Affordable Care
Act of 2010.
Gov. Rick
Perry said the

economy.”
Attorney
General Greg Abbott said the case, in
which Texas was one of 26 states that
petitioned to have the law declared
unconstitutional, said it was not about
health care, “it was about the rule of law
and a fight against a federal government
that continues to expand.”
State Comptroller Susan Combs said
the law “will place an enormous burden
on Texas taxpayers and place a huge
constraint on our budget.”
Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Grapevine, chair
of the state Senate Health and Human
Services Committee, said, “The health
care system is nowhere near ready for
the massive influx of patients who will
be forced to buy coverage, especially
given our existing health care workforce
shortages.”
However, Gilberto Hinojosa of
Brownsville, newly elected chairman
of the Texas Democratic Party, said,
“Today’s decision on The Affordable
Health Care Act by the Supreme Court
is a vindication of President Barack
Obama and a slam in the faces of
Republicans who offer no alternative
to this country’s broken health care
system. A choice between bankruptcy
or death is no choice at all.”
Hinojosa said that since its passage,
the health care law “has improved the
lives of Texans of all ages and walks
of life” and gave as examples young
adults gaining coverage through their
parents’ plan, coverage for preexisting
conditions, savings on prescription
drugs and preventive services with no
co-pays.
Republican leaders in Congress said
they would call votes this month to
repeal the act in its entirety. Initial
reactions aside, how states and individuals adjust to the court decision will
come to light as more parts of the act
are scheduled to take effect periodically over the next eight years. To wit,
the federal government is to pay 100
percent of the costs for those who are
newly eligible for Medicaid for 2014
through 2016. And, in 2017, the federal
government’s share of Medicaid payments to states will begin to decrease
but will not fall to less than 90 percent.
Briefly, here is what the court ruled:
1. The act’s “individual mandate” requiring most Americans to purchase
health insurance exceeds Congress’s
authority to regulate commerce and
thus is unconstitutional.
2. The act’s “shared responsibility payment” or penalty on individuals who do
not purchase health insurance is a tax
that does not violate the Constitution.
The penalty is to be assessed and collected by the Internal Revenue Service.
3. The federal government may not
withdraw existing Medicaid funding
from states for failure to comply with
the requirements set out in the act’s
Medicaid expansion.
Medicaid is the program for pregnant
women, children, needy families, the
blind, the elderly and the disabled, in
obtaining medical care.

Safety last week announced DWI patrols for a nine-day period from June
30 to July 8 would be increased.

Until next week’s report on the picnic, I want to be sure to thank those
of you who volunteered to adopt
one of the buildings at Heritage
Village to clean and decorate it for
the Christmas holidays. The Pawn
Shop has been adopted by the Willis
family ( Jim, Annabeth and June); our
Seamstress Shop by Gloria Newsome;
Beth Black has adopted the Doctor’s

the Vidette has been adopted by Amie

Rebecca Duckworth have claimed
the Collier Store; the Barber Shop
has been adopted by Russ and Glenda
Nalley. The Stewart School House
will continue under the adoption of
the Stewart family and the Cherokee
Church has been claimed by members
of the Order of the Confederate Rose

have adopted the Tolar Cabin and
the Buggy Barn has been claimed
by Durwood and Estelle Ling.
You might think that we have
“adopted out” all the buildings but
visitors to Heritage Village will know
that we have a few others that are in
need of adoption. This project might
be a good school service project or an
activity that an entire family could
enjoy and at the same time be helping others. Look over the following
list and find one that appeals to you
and then give us a call at 283-2272

the jail, the Post Office, the Justice
of the Peace’s office, the Tool Room
and the railroad depot. We also have
a factory section that includes lots of
equipment to make and repair chairs
and many engines of different types.
I am sure that some of you will find
a building just for you! Give us a
call. And thank you in advance for
offering to help.
Last week Francine Frasier was out
at the Village teaching a genealogy
lesson to help African-American
residents of the Dies Community,
close to Doucette, research their
roots. The morning included three
guest speakers: Sandi Hargrove,
Carol Shields (genealogy librarian for
the Whitmeyer Genealogy Library at
the Village) and Rev. Steven Barlow.
Participants were taught ways to find
their ancestors when there might
be few recorded records. Following
lunch at the Pickett House, the group
visited the Tyler County Courthouse
and other area courthouses looking
for old deed records that would aid
them in their search.
On Saturday, Ms. Frasier taught
young people about the importance
of researching their family tree. They
attended the dedication of a historical plaque honoring the Pine Grove

was for African-American students
through the 9th grade. After the

Cities rank high in growth
Texas had eight of the 15 most rapidly
growing large cities between Census
Day, April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2011,
according to population estimates
released June 28 by the U.S. Census
Bureau.
Round Rock, with population 104,664
and a 4.8 percent population increase,
was ranked the second-fastest growing
city in the nation.
Austin was third, with a 3.8 percent
increase and population 820,611.
Fourth place Plano posted 3.8 percent
growth and a population of 269,776.
Fifth place McKinney grew 3.8 percent
and was counted at 136,067 residents.
Sixth place Frisco grew by 3.8 percent
with its population listed as 121,387.
Seventh place Denton increased by
3.4 percent with population listed as
117,187. Thirteenth place McAllen
grew at 3.0 percent with population
133,742. And the last Texas incorporated municipality in the top 15 was
14th place Carrollton, which grew
3.0 percent and had a population of
122,640.
Dog Trot Houses
A young man called , asking if I knew what a “dog trot house” was. He had
heard the phrase from one of his grandparents and had conjured up visions of
dogs trotting through a house day and night.
He wasn’t far from the mark.
Dog trot houses were built and occupied by East Texas’ earliest settlers. Many
of them migrated here in the early l800s from the Old South and brought
southern customs, including the way buildings were constructed.with them.
A dog trot house (also called a dog run house) was simple in construction.
Made either of logs or rough-sawn lumber, it consisted of two separate living
areas under one roof, but separated by a wide gallery that divided the two family
areas. One of the living areas consisted of sleeping accommodations; the other
was where the family cooked, ate and entertained visitors.
There were no bathrooms or toilets in the building. Outhouses, well separated
from the house, met the family’s hygiene needs. Large washtubs, filled with
water from wells or springs, were used for baths.
The family’s dogs slept on the gallery and instead of running around the house,
they trotted from front to back by using the gallery.
The dot trot also served as a porch of sorts, but most houses had a separate
porch on the front of the house.
Few of the old-time dog trot homes are left in East Texas.
Ben Anderson of Angelina County called our attention to a well-preserved
dog trot house near Ratcliff in Houston County. It was a beauty to behold,
framed by crepe myrtles and cedar trees.
It was built by a pioneer family in the Mount Vernon community, where
Henry Warren Payne and W.M. Conner gave land for a church and a cemetery.
In 1871 a church house used as a school was erected. The custom of fencing
cemetery plots began in 1872 with the burial in the first marked grave of the
son of James E. and Ann Payne Ashby.
After a fire, Payne rode door-to-door raising money for a new church house
built in 1884. The Mt. Vernon Baptist Church was officially organized in 1888.
Land from the Louisiana and Texas Lumber Co. enlarged the cemetery and in
1960 the church’s present building was erected.
In our family, my great-great grandfather, Joel Harrison Bowman, built a dog
trot house near Sardis in Cherokee County, but the building rotted away after
he died in 1936.
Doris’ grandparents, the Robert L. Davis family, also lived in a dog trot house
on Virgil Street in Lufkin, but it, too, vanished as progress overtook Lufkin.
Other dog trot houses, fortunately, still stand elsewhere throughout East Texas,
A two-story log structure, was built by ferry owner James Gaines on the west
bank of the Sabine River in the 1830s. When Toledo Bend Reservoir was built,
the old house was moved, and remains an important landmark in Sabine County.
Another dog trot, built before 1842, is known as the Trammel Trace Cabin
and is a recorded Texas historic landmark at Marshall, where it was moved in
1938 by the Hobart Key family.
Dog trot houses are a unique part of our East Texas heritage, and hopefully
other buildings of the same style are alive and well in the pineywoods.

history and folklore. He can be reached at bob-bowman.com)
Jitterbugging With
Judi and Martha Lou
If you’re past the “gate to old age” — 65
— you’d be fibbing if you didn’t admit to
dreaming about your teenage days.
Growing up in a small Texas town in the
1940s and 1950s, almost anything you did
was dictated by a couple of church groups.
Dancing was near the top of the “don’t do”
list.
As a junior high student,dancing wasn’t on
my or almost any other boy’s program. We
might think about getting close to some girl
we thought was pretty or cute but actually
holding one close, particularly as long as a
three-minute dance,was just,well,icky.“Real
men” didn’t do that. Did they?
Then came high school. The cool years.Boys
learned to say“she’s purty,”“swell”and“sweet.”
An enterprising music teacher in town
decided that if we were going to be socially
functional at a junior-senior prom, then ol’
hairy-legged boys needed to learn how to
dance to something more sophisticated than
Ernest Tubb.
So, Music Teacher began off-campus
classes for juniors and seniors. Our “cool”
junior group huddled and decided this
was really “hip” and we wanted to learn
something beside that awkward hillbilly
“step-two-three.”
Some preachers decided dancing was
an abomination. The preachers told teen
members of their churches that it was evil
and young folks shouldn’t be allowed to give
in to Satan’s temptations that would surely
be roused by “dancing.”
I went to my preacher at our little missionary Baptist church and asked, “What’s
wrong with dancin’, Preacher?”
“If you’re just enjoying the music and dancing and your mind is clear of sinful things,”
he wisely proclaimed,“then nothing is wrong
with dancing.”
Music Teacher was smart. She knew most
teens wanted to dance and “be close to one
another.”But,she also knew we needed other
reasons to want to dance, so she made it a
full course with several dance steps in the
shuffling curriculum.
We learned the obligatory two-step (“reglar
dancin’”) and the waltz.Then,MusicTeacher
threw in what she called The Frisco. It was
jitterbugging, complete with twirls, twists
and even some acrobatic moves that looked
like a gym class in action.
After a couple of sessions of jitterbugging,
I was hooked.
Two high school classmates, Judi and
Martha Lou, were good dancers and had
tried to teach me with only a modicum of
success. Martha Lou even took the dance
classes with us, so she’d be sure we were all
on the same-step page.
We finished the classes just in time for the
junior-senior prom.As junior prom hosts to
the seniors,we got really fancy and adopted a
prom theme of “Moulin Rouge — A Night
in Paris,” which set off a couple of churches,
convinced it was going to be the biggest

night of sin in
town history.
It was a wonderful evening and
Music Teacher
was proud of her
students,who led
the way to jitterbugging to this
new music craze,
rock-n-roll.
Of course, what
do you do with
all that dancing
knowledge after
the junior-senior prom. There were no places
to dance in my hometown, or at least not
for crowds of teens. So, some enterprising
youngsters found that we were welcome in
the beer joints/night clubs of a neighboring “wet” county as long as we didn’t try to
imbibe. That was okay with Judi, Martha
Lou and me because we just wanted a place
to dance.
For several years, extending well into college, anytime Judi, Martha Lou and I were
home, I got to take whoever didn’t have a
serious date jitterbugging.
We became proficient dancers and had a
blast, so much so that the older folks at the
clubs gave way to us and pitched coins on
the dance floor while we jitterbugged. We
often went home with more money than
we took. Dancing/jitterbugging was more
fun than anything.
I have recently tested my hip replacement
and know I can maneuver well enough to
jitterbug, albeit a little slower than in the
olden days. While, Judi is, sadly, no longer
with us, I think I’ll see if Martha Lou is
game for a little jitterbugging at the next
class reunion.

Fullness

God Bless America!
There’s nothing like a quick trip to Africa to remind you of the
tremendous blessing of living in the USA. “God bless America!”
should be our constant prayer.
Hebrews tells us we must believe that God is! Precious believer,
Almighty God is everything He says He is in His Word, the Holy
Bible. He is our great creator. Yes, He has set nations in place with
their times and purposes to be played out according to His will.
He can even deal with interference from men. You can trust Him
today!
The next part of the Hebrews verse says we must believe that He
compensates those who carefully and steadily look for Him. This
includes individuals as well as nations. Today you are being rewarded
according to the degree of your seeking the things of God. America
is being rewarded according to the degree our nation recognizes
God and His sovereign rule over our affairs. Africa and all other
nations are being rewarded accordingly.
Now for some surprising news. The last page has not been written.
God’s line-up of sheep and goat nations has not been chosen yet.
His Word tells us that on that last great day there will be those in
the Kingdom from every tongue, tribe and nation. He is on a quest
for a people who will love Him and no other god. At this very moment our Heavenly Father is shaking things up. His ambassadors
are literally covering the earth with the good news, “Jesus saves!”
On every flight from Houston,Texas to London, England to Johannesburg, Africa to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe our team of missionaries
met other teams traveling to various nations with their assignment
for the Kingdom of God. While we were in our assigned location
we met college students from Tennessee, Boston and Galveston;
adults from Wales, Ireland and England and a couple from Britain
moving from Zimbabwe after twenty-five years to a new assignment
in Arkansas. One of the pastors in Bulawayo is from California.
What does this have to do with you? Most of us have been placed
in East Texas for this time in God’s Kingdom purposes. What
exactly is your assignment? One is to join with the body of Christ
from all denominations and organizations to seek our Heavenly
Father now on behalf of our beloved America.
“God bless the U.S.A.”
See you next week, Gloria

UP, UP AND AWAY! is the theme. It will be like no VBS you have attended before
this time. No school! No teachers telling Bible Stories. It will be ladies and kids exploring God’s Word together, in conversations while busy hands are doing fun things
and everybody participates in the learning from God’s Word.
Kids will help to build the lesson from their own knowledge and memory from other
VBS and Sunday Schools about the wonderful things that happened, and figure out
more truths than they have understood before. It won’t be workbooks and story time.
It’s all about kid participation.
We will have an Explore the Bible session, a time to learn verses to carry in their
hearts forever, looking into missions work that people sometimes commit their lives
to, while others do missions right where they are, and the possibilities that one can
find ways to
invent new missions activities.
There will be fantastic crafts galore, and we will have free play time, followed by a
picnic supper under the trees.
Then we will all join in a rousing time of rockin’ out music to end the day.
There will be hot air balloons, Biplanes, Kites and oodles of swell spots for picture
taking….like in the basket of a REAL HOT AIR BALLOON.

Hollywood
Versus Reality
I am always amazed when someone quotes
some famous actor as an authority on a particular subject. I’ve heard General George
Patton quoted from the movie that was made
about him many years ago. And then there
was the famous Alamo movie that John
Wayne produced and people made references
to things in that movie as if they were fact.
Recently, the Hatfields and McCoys movie
with Kevin Costner was viewed by millions of
people. Kevin Costner may be a great actor
and he claims they did a lot of research on
the history of the famous feud. Since I am
from West Virginia and since we ministered
there for six years (not far from the area
where those families fought), I was curious
as to the truthfulness of the movie series.
There was a scene that was depicted in the
movie that the Hatfields and McCoys were
supposedly attending the same church of
which I am a member. However, with the
best research that I have available, I cannot
find any documentation of that being true.
My point is: just because Hollywood says so,
doesn’t make it so. Just because you watch a
movie doesn’t mean that movie is accurate.
Hollywood is interested in making money
from your money. That’s always been the
case. So, why would you believe a movie as
fact?
Sometimes someone will quote a newsmedia person as an authority on a given
subject. The national news media puts a spin
on everything, so why would you believe their
research?
ABC television produced a documentary
on Jesus’ resurrection many years ago. Never
once was a believer interviewed. Only skeptics were quoted. Is that fair and balanced
reporting?
In reality Hollywood is make-believe. It’s
an entertainment business. So, what are we
to believe?
I choose to believe God and His Word.
How about you?
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful
for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that the man of God may
be thoroughly equipped for every good work
(2 Timothy 3:16, 17).

specific programs to promote Character Counts.
Both reports, the English as a Second Language and the Character Counts are required of the school district as part of the No
Child Left Behind Program.
The Superintendent reported to the Board the results of the
recent state tests. According to Conner the results are in but
the jury is still out. Texas Education Agency Officials released
STAAR or State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness
results, but because no standards have been created for what is a
passing or failing grade, school districts don’t know whether to
sigh with relief or frustration. The STAAR replaces the TAKS
tests. When fully implemented in 2016, students in the third
and fifth grade who do not pass their STAAR tests will be unable to go to the next grade. For the next school year, teachers
will hopefully know a little more about how to prepare students.
The state promised that the STAAR would be a more rigorous
test that the TAKS and all the district can do is to focus on the
classroom and make sure students are learning what is required.
Conner also gave an update on the facilities repairs and construction. He informed the board that the batting cage should have
the slab poured sometime in the upcoming week; construction
had been delayed due to the rain. He also gave a report on the
importance of student attendance; showing board members the
final numbers for the 2011-12 school year. “We are working on
some ways to get those students in the classrooms. When those
students aren’t at school, they are losing valuable instruction
time,” said Conner.

Bulldogs position
series: Offensive line
By: Chance Bailey
The offensive line is easily the
most overlooked and unappreciated group in football. These guys
get very little spotlight, when
in reality, they’re probably the
hardest working guys on an entire
football team with the tough assignments they are asked to do in
the trenches. Last season for the
Bulldogs, these guys had a great
season even with the many quarterback changes that they faced.
The starting lineup for the Bulldogs isn’t expected to change
much, with junior left tackle
Garrett Wheat returning off
of his first season, which resulted in him earning First Team
All-District honors. Senior
Colton Ackley will also be back,
making this his third straight
season as the Bulldogs starting
center. The Bulldogs will also
have two more senior offensive
linemen returning in Haiden
Hughes and D.J. W hitley.
Something new that head coach
Fancy Johnson has been stressing
this offseason is firing off the
ball. Coach Johnson believes
that being quicker off of the ball
will give his team an advantage
in getting that extra second for
the quarterback to throw the
football or giving his backs that
split second to find an open hole.
Even though the offensive line
isn’t a flashy group of players,
they are without a doubt the key
to the Bulldogs success in the
2012 season.

Former Chester football star
turning heads in Eagles OTA’s
By: Chance Bailey
Last April, tight end Chase
Ford was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted
free agent. He was thought to be
brought in as just a camp body,
but according to reports from
the Eagles, he’s impressing the
coaches in OTA’s (Organized
Team Activities) and has a real
shot to make the roster as the
team’s third tight end. He’s got
phenomenal size for a tight end
at 6’6, 260 pounds, and runs
good routes and has great hands
for a tight end. Eagles coaches
and scouts say he reminds them
of New Orleans Saints tight
end, and former Miami Hurricane Jimmy Graham with
his ability to go up and get the
ball over defenders. If Ford does
make the roster, expect him to
be mainly a player used in the
red zone and on special teams.
Spurger summer league
By: Emily Waldrep
The Spurger Lady Pirates are already gearing up and getting ready
for the fall basketball season by
participating in summer league, a
basketball program that schedules
games and scrimmage throughout
the summer so that the off-season
players can stay practicing and stay
in shape. Six girls participate in
the summer league program and
are enjoying the benefits that they
are receiving from it.
The girls claimed a great victory
last week when they played in a
summer league tournament in
Woodville.
“We only had six girls to rotate
in and out, and the other team
had about twenty, but we still beat
them. It’s a great way to make us
feel great and start the official
season on a good note,” said Loni
McLeod, a summer league player.
She also says that Spurger will
be a team to watch next year and
hope that they will make it into
the playoffs.
“We have a good defense, and
everyone is doing really great”
says McLeod.
Fans and coaches also notice the
girls’ success, and the new head
athletic director at Spurger has
high hopes for the girls.
“We won’t make it just a few
rounds into playoffs, we will go
all the way, especially with the
athletes we have this year,” says
Coach Mitchell.
Summer league games and
open gym practices will continue
throughout the summer so that
all of the Spurger athletic teams
will be ready for whatever next
season brings.
