SUMMER 2014
SUMMER 2014 S E R V OZ - LE S H O U C H E S - C HAM O N IX-M O NT-B LAN C - VALLO R C I N E NEW THE VALLEY OF TRAIL RUNNING Head towards Servoz, Les Houches, Chamonix or Vallorcine for new specially adapted trail running routes for all levels. GET MOVING THE CHAMONIX VALLEY WILL HOST THE SKYRUNNING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS® The championships will be taking place in Chamonix for the first time since they started. Taking place from 27 to 29 June 2014, they will include the KM Vertical, the Mont-Blanc Marathon and the Mont-Blanc 80km. Start the day with a morning of mountain biking on the downhill slopes or through mountain villages and hamlets. Take a ride up to the Aiguille de Midi in the aerial tram to enjoy a mountaineering session up on the famous peaks. Now for a bit of climbing; choose to stay up high or head down to the valley. 2 3 NEW ITINERIO: AN INTERACTIVE TRIP AROUND THE CHAMONIX VALLEY Fancy a hike to soak up the beautiful landscape? Choose from down in the valley or take a trip up high using the ski lifts, head through the forest or marvel at the panoramic views all the way to the glaciers dating back thousands of years. Itinerio is suitable for all and takes you on five geo-guided walks to explore the natural and cultural heritage of the Valley using different themes: snow and glaciers, crystals, geology, pastoralism, forests, fauna and flora, humankind and our link to the Mont-Blanc mountains, etc. On the agenda are fun and games for the whole family. Current scientific research is linked to the Itinerio—meaning you can become an observer over the walk. In the form of a free application to download for smartphones and tablets, Itinerio is also available by renting tablets in the Chamonix Valley tourist offices. You can even hop over the border to Italy or Switzerland! Immediate landing after a paraglide jump. FAMILY-FRIENDLY MOUNTAINS You’ll come across chamois, ibexes and other marmots in the Merlet Animal Park. Ride up to the Nid d’Aigle (2,380 m) in the Mont-Blanc Tramway, which is the departure point for mountaineers from all over the globe tackling the Mont-Blanc. Head towards the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France, by jumping aboard the famous rack train. On the agenda is: the chance to explore the amazing Ice Cave, a trip to the Glaciorium, reading of the landscape by a glaciologist, an exhibition at the Grand Hôtel du Montenvers, a donkey ride and themed walks. 4 5 NEW THE BÉRARD WATERFALL FOOTBRIDGE Take the new route to get to the snack bar in Vallorcine. The view of the spectacular torrent flowing down the slopes of the Aiguilles Rouges will take your breath away. LUNCH ON THE PATIO NEW CHAVANTS LEISURE AREA Make the most of the new snack bar on the banks of Chavants Lake. Make it a memorable holiday for the children with a pony ride. New facilities include: tennis, fishing, an adventure playground for adults and children alike, and climbing. When it’s time to stop for lunch on the mountain paths, just head for the snack bars and dairies that used to serve hot chocolate and milkbased snacks, which are an unmissable part of the Chamonix Valley. Perfect for a gourmet mountain speciality surrounded by the beautiful natural landscape! 6 7 NEW NEW LA MAISON DE VILLAGE In Servoz, take a trip to the “Maison du Lieutenant”, a 15th century building in which you will discover a completely new way of looking at historic mountain culture, the agriculture trade today and challenges facing mountain agriculture in the future. Opening planned for August 2014. Head to La Maison de Village in Argentières if you are looking for family entertainment or guided nature trips for big and small alike. There are also cultural exhibitions and a permanent mineral exhibition. Aiguille du Midi - 3,842 m: a magical trip in the aerial tram. Welcome to the gateway of high mountain terrain! Enjoy a breathtaking view of the Mont-Blanc surrounded by the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. A trip to the Gorges de la Diosaz, a stunning natural site in Servoz Set off from the Centre Équestre du Mont-Blanc in Les Houches for a ride on horseback Get your clubs out for a game of golf in Chamonix, offering stunning panoramic views from the foot of the Mont-Blanc Rafting and hydrospeed on the Arve river or canyoning in the Barberine Relax and enjoy the sun at the swimming pool in Chamonix Enjoy a game of tennis overlooking the Drus, the Aiguille du Midi and the Mont-Blanc LEISURE ACTIVITIES Have a go at fishing in the mountain lakes and torrents NEW STEP INTO THE VOID Are you brave enough to “step into the void” in a glass room on the mountaintop terrace of the Aiguille du Midi summit above a drop to 1,000 m below?
