Overview on the agricultural
sector in Morocco
Morocco produces around 12 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables a year.
2 million tonnes of citrus production a year which covers 8 months a year.
1.2 million tonnes of tomato a year.
The production meets all the needs of the local market in terms of fruits and
vegetables.
Morocco exports 1.25 million tonnes a year, achieving a turnover of more than
$ 1.2 billion: Morocco exports 610,000 tonnes of fruits and 640,000 tonnes of
vegetables.
Morocco exports 50 types of fruits and vegetables.
Citrus fruits are the main exported fruits (83%), melons 8%, strawberries 4%,
grapes 1%, watermelons 1%, blueberries, avocado, raspberry...
Tomatoes are the main vegetables exported (64%), green bean (15%), pepper
(8%), zucchini (5%), potato (3%), chilli (2%), radish (1%), lettuce, onion, cabbage,
cucumber...
Morocco is the 8th largest exporter of citrus in the world: exporting 500,000
tonnes of citrus fruits a year with a value of approximately $ 500 million (small
citrus fruits and oranges).
Following the adaptation of Morocco’s supply to the global demand, small
citrus fruits exports increased rapidly during the past five years (clementine,
nour, nova, Nadorcott).
Morocco is the 4th largest exporter of tomatoes in the world: exporting 400,000
tonnes of tomatoes a year.
Tomatoes exports are mainly oriented to the European market
Russia has become the second largest destination for Morocco. The imports
volume of this market has reached 51,000 tonnes in 2011/12 while it recoded
only 11,000 tonnes in 2006/07.

The Strengths of the Sector
- Morocco, a platform for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, enjoys an ideal
geographical location which makes of it an export platform for the EU market,
the U.S. East Coast and other markets.
- Morocco also enjoys a quality image abroad and has strong ability to differentiate
its products.
- The agricultural sector comes at the forefront of the national development
priorities because of role it plays in the economic and social fabric of the
country; the Green Morocco Plan is proof.
- The eating and organoleptic quality of citrus and vegetables.
- The diversity of products: varieties of oranges, berries, tomatoes...
- Crops are used to feed the country’s exports and offer significant opportunities
for the local food industry.
- Soil resources: SAU compared to SAT.
- The citrus sector development prospects aim at tripling the volume of production
(32 million T/year) and doubling the exports (1.3 million T/year) in 2020 by setting
a contractual program aiming at restructuring the citrus sector in Morocco.
- The preferential access that Morocco has to certain markets (EU, USA, EFTA,
Quad, etc.) to obtain several agricultural and agro-industrial products of interest
for its local market.

In recent decades marked by profound changes, the fruits and
vegetables for export has grown considerably by advances in
production, packaging and marketing.
At the dawn of the 3rd millennium and in a context of
globalization and the globalization of trade, the agricultural
landscape is changing consistently.
In order to change the profession, creating a new association
of producers exporters had become imperative to incorporate
new skills young and dynamic.
And February 24, 1994, in the presence of a large audience
of producers, and in a spirit of cooperation and anticipation
to the expectations of professionals, was born the Moroccan
Association of Producers Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables
(APEFEL). The creation of the APEFEL was a real turning point
in the fruits and vegetables through the emergence of a new
approach to agricultural trade unionism based primarily on
analysis of constraints in the sector and on a large production
capacity ideas and proposals for solutions.
Thanks to its dynamic and relevant services offered to its
members, the APEFEL currently represents nearly 500 farmers
and producers / exporters of fruits and vegetables exporting
nearly 80% of the total quantities of fruits and vegetables
exported. These producers are located in the main producing
areas of fruits and vegetables in this case Souss Massa, Casa,
Eljadida, Berkane and Loukous.
