FANCY driving a train, being a

US president or even the pope?
Choose your avatar and you can be
who you like at the Perth International
Arts Festival exhibition I Think I Can, an
interactive instillation put together by a
Tasmanian puppeteer and the Fremantle
and District Model Railway Association.
Metres of miniature railway track snake
around country settings; through villages
and town squares, and over suspensions
bridges—there’s even a cemetery.
Ongoing story
Viewers choose one of 170 tiny avatars,
which puppeteer Sam Routledge places
in situ to becomes an ongoing story in the
imaginary town. Viewers also get a passport
allowing them to come back and direct their
resident’s progress, which is also online.
The title of the exhibition comes from the
children’s book The Little Engine That Could,
Routledge says.
“[I] want to play with the optimism of
that title and story, but subverting the value

with an alternative, miniature version of
themselves.”
An iPad personality test calculates their
ideal profession, but Routledge hopes most
will take a different track.
“Encouraging [them] to imagine another
reality for themselves.”
He says model railway enthusiasts don’t
usually see themselves as engaging in the

The small avatars they’ll use are bought

painted on by club members. “Putting the
lipstick on is the hardest,” a poker-faced Mr
Redman tells the Herald.

The blokes at the Fremantle club were
bemused by the instillation when the Herald
dropped into their Fremantle Prison station.
They’ll ‘drive’ the trains, but don’t
see themselves as artisans despite the
painstaking craftsmanship that goes into
their models. President Bob Redman says
he’s not even a train person: “Electronics is

FREMANTLE city council
has offered a “sweetener” to a
potential buyer of New Edition
Bookshop, which may have helped
fend off closure.
Intrigue about the fate of the
port’s favourite bookshop has been
worthy of a Michael Connelly thriller
recently (Google suggests “new edition
bookshop for sale” when you start
typing the name, an indication of the
traffic that query’s generated), but
owner James Calligaro confirmed to
the Herald this week he’s negotiating
with a “prospective buyer”.
“New Edition Bookshop is not
closing,” he said.
And while his response is more
note than novella, local authors
and editors will cheer. They were
so concerned about the rumoured
closure that David Whish-Wilson
organised a bunch of them to lobby
the council to intervene. They even
offered to help with publicity and
other chores if it could keep the
bookstore’s doors open.
Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt told
the Herald that while the sale was
still being negotiated he couldn’t
reveal the council’s sweetener, but
it fitted into its initiative aimed at
protecting the city’s retail diversity.
Lutton
speaks out
LINLEY LUTTON has broken
his silence about quitting
Fremantle council’s design
advisory committee.
The urban planner says there
was political interference and
badgering because the mayor
wanted certain projects approved.

A DISABILITY pensioner
says the WA health
department’s indifference
to his crippling health
problems contributed to his
hospitalisation on Tuesday.
Leon Rault is virtually
housebound because of his
chronic pain—he’s had spinal
fusion and open heart surgery—
and has been pleading fruitlessly
with the health department to
give him extra care so he can get
out more and complete everyday
chores.
But after constant knockbacks, he became so stressed
this week his blood pressure
rocketed and he was bundled
into an ambulance by his GP and
carted off to Fremantle Hospital.
The 62-year-old gets a carer
seven hours a week through
the department’s Home and
Community Care program, but
says it’s not enough to get all the
jobs done around the house.
“It’s terrible, I feel very, very,
stressed,” he said.
“I rely on home care but I

Perth Home Care Services is
contracted by the department
to provide Mr Rault’s carer, and
chief operating officer Rosie
Lawn told the Herald his request
had been looked into and he’s
getting all the care he needs.
The company referred his
request to the department’s
assessment team which backed
its decision not to increase
his hours. Ms Lawn says they
even checked with his GP after
the open heart surgery and he

pain and my legs swell up so I
can barely walk.
“Every time I try and get
more care and say my medical
situation has changed, I’m told
I’m at the maximum hours.”
Mr Rault says he’s on such
strong pain medication he can’t
drive and needs a carer to get
him to his GP or a hydrotherapy
pool. While he’s waiting in
reception and walking laps by
himself the carer’s “on the clock”
and soon time’s up and there’s
jobs at home left undone.

MICHAEL PAULY might not
be the first person to walk
around Australia, but the
73-year-old is surely the only
one to do it in sandals.
The portsider will set off
on his 15,000-kilometre trek
on March 1 to raise money for
the Fremanshed and Arthritis
Foundation of WA.
Mr Pauly, who suffers from
osteoarthritis, is expected back in
Perth on July 1, 2015.
“Some people might question
my sanity but I’ve walked from
Perth to Melbourne before and
back,” he told the Herald.
“Once you get to the
Nullarbor it’s quite easy, because
it’s flat.”
While Mt Lofty in Adelaide
could be a challenge he reckons
he’s got it covered: “I just need
people to give me water along
the way”.
Mr Pauly, who will sleep in
a tent along his long saunter,
reckons he will go through three
pairs of sandals. “I’ll be wearing
those Keen sandals, which are
pretty comfortable and durable,”
he said.
The septuagenarian says he
expects to walk around 30km
per day and has a few tricks up
his sleeve to get him through the
pain and blisters.
“When you are older you
can live in your head for a lot
longer,” he laughed. “It’s a not a
young person’s game.”

Freo downsizing
by BRENDAN FOSTER
FREMANTLE councillor
Rachel Pemberton has
launched her bid to open up
Fremantle to ‘mini-block’
subdivisions (“Think small,”
Herald, October 12, 2013).
This week her colleagues
voted to initiate a planning
scheme amendment which
would allow developments to
breach current R-Code densities
if they satisfy 12 conditions.
Homes would have to be no
bigger than 120 square metres,
which Cr Pemberton says opens
up the suburbs to more diverse
and affordable housing.
“Not everyone want to live in
a large home, but there is limited
options for how and where
you can build new modest-size
homes,” Cr Pemberton told the
Herald prior to Wednesday’s
meeting.
The overall development
would also need a minimum
of 60 per cent open space, and
10 per cent of that has to be set
aside strictly for trees in an effort
to keep suburbs cooler.
A report attached to the
item claims the WA Planning
Commission already has the
power to approve strata lot
subdivisions of the mini-blocks
• Cr Rachel Pemberton
the plan would create, however
the council says it would only
apply where a dwelling has
already been built and vacant
land subdivisions would be
outlawed.
Cr Pemberton says the
current planning scheme
encourages portsiders to squeeze
the biggest McMansions they can
onto their land, and Australia
already has some of the biggest
and most unsustainable houses
in the world.
The average Aussie home has
gone from 162 sqm in 1984 to 241
sqm in 2013.
“It is no coincidence that as
our homes have gotten larger,
housing costs have skyrocketed.
And it’s not just the cost of
buying or renting a home; larger
homes have higher running costs
as well.
“Diverse housing means a
diverse community—all the
people who make Freo the
cosmopolitan place it is—and
the people we need to ensure
economic revitalisation and new
jobs in the city.”
But there is a kicker. Buried
in the 3500-word report, which
is heavy on the wonders of
pint-sized homes, is a single line
acknowledging it will usher in
greater density across Fremantle.
Coupled with that, there’s a
squeeze on parking, with just
one bay per household and
no visitor parking unless its a
bigger development.
But Cr Pemberton says it can
be achieved without stomping
on Fremantle’s character.
“This amendment will allow
a return to the more traditional
housing and streetscapes
of Fremantle—just think of
the terrace houses in South
Fremantle, or the little workers
cottages in White Gum Valley,”
she said.
Staffers will develop a set of
planning provisions which will
head back to council at a later
date, before going out to public
comment and then on to the
WAPC for consideration.
‘Pool the pools’
by BRENDAN FOSTER
FREMANTLE deputy mayor
Josh Wilson says the South
Fremantle Senior High school
swimming pool has made
such a splash with locals
it should stay open every
summer.
The pool at the Annie
Street school has been open
to swimmers since November
last year while the council’s
pool gets a multi-million dollar
facelift.
Cr Wilson says the SFSHS
pool usually gathers moss
during the summer holidays so
it makes sense to keep it open
during the hottest months of the
year.
“I have suggested that the
city consider operating the
South Freo pool as a regular
extension of swimming options
in the summer months, not
least because it makes use of
a fantastic pool resource that
otherwise lies fallow between
mid-December and February,”
he said. “It’s a reminder that

Butt-ugly
HOW disheartening to see the
South Beach parkland looking
like one big ashtray during and
after the festive season.
We would have a much cleaner
and more pleasant place to visit if
rangers were given powers to keep
smokers off the grass and allowed
dogs to enjoy the park.
Andrea Cicholas
Hamilton Hill
The Ed says: How ‘bout it, Dr
Pettitt? Cockburn banned smokers from
getting closer than 10 metres to other
beachgoers—time for Freo to follow its
lead? Maybe a bit more emphasis on
enforcing it wouldn’t go astray, though.
Freo’s story is
a low storey
I RECENTLY read of the
$80million preliminary green
light to put multi-storey
developments in the heart of
Fremantle.
I have been living in and around
Fremantle for about 40 years and
feel I have some idea about the
Fremantle energy and ideas, and
I can say with certainty that any
multi-storey development is not
Fremantle.
Fremantle is about community
and communing and as in the old
Myer building, given some space
the Fremantle energy emerges,
creative, relaxed and colourfully
communicating.
As the mayor Brad Pettitt is
from Roleystone I get the feeling
he hasn’t quite embraced this
community spirit yet. A ride on a
bike around and he will see and
feel the spirit.
A good example of Fremantle
coming alive—and the mayor was
unfortunately out of town—was
the James Price Point March when
there was a concert. The shops
and cafes were full and the colours
were out, 20,000 of them.
Even an Esplanade summer
concert series would inject the
much needed dollars into this tired
community in the most positive
way.

Shane can
stay at home
I WRITE in relation to your
recent story about changes
to the Disability Services
Commission’s accommodation
services (“Cruel cuts”, Herald,
January 25 2014).
People like Shane Norton will be
able to stay in their current house
with their current housemates or
move if they want to. It is their
choice to make with the support of
their families and carers.
Only 15 per cent of
accommodation services for people
with disability in WA are provided by
the Disability Services Commission.
The rest has been provided for
decades by non-government
organisations offering excellent care
and support.
A list of more than 30 of these
organisations, including Activ,
Nulsen, Rocky Bay and The Centre
for Cerebral Palsy, is being made
available to help people like Shane for
the first time choose their preferred
option for future care and support.
By being better informed the
member for Fremantle could provide
better support to her constituents
without unnecessarily instilling fear
and angst in families.

Fiery spirit
THE Aussie spirit is alive and
well. Parkland Villas Booragoon
Retirement Village on Marmion
Street escaped a potentially
dangerous situation when fire
engulfed an adjoining reserve on
Monday of the long weekend.
After a branch fell on power lines,
the resulting sparks ignited a small
bush area alongside our boundary
fence.
Prompt action by locals living
nearby helped to keep the fire from
spreading to villas only a few metres
from the fence. A dozen or so men,
women and teenagers organised
hoses to prevent the flames reaching
the buildings and they continued to
work with their hoses after the Fire
Brigade arrived.
All residents of our village
would like to thank these families
for racing to the rescue and saving
the day. Isn’t it great that they saw
the need and were so proactive in
helping to prevent a serious situation
developing? Grateful thanks to all
those public-spirited locals. We salute
you!

Cracker traffic
THANKS to all concerned for the
fireworks at Bather’s Beach.
I travelled to South Mole to park at
the lighthouse. To get there was okay,
but to return it was congested. It took
60 minutes at a snail’s pace to go from
the lighthouse to Cliff Street (about 300
metres), but everyone was calm.
Did mayor Brad Pettitt or his staff
contact with Fremantle Port?
There was a three-way traffic
flow from the lighthouse, then the
passenger terminal and Cliff Street.
I assumed the gate to the east of the
wharf was closed. Traffic could have
got out of the Shacks site if it was
opened and dispersed at a more rapid
speed.

I resigned in dismay
I
HAVE been told of
many rumours about
why I resigned from the
Fremantle Design Advisory
Committee.
I resigned due to my growing
sense of dismay at the culture in
which the DAC operates.
Design advisory or design
review committees are being
established in many councils.
When operated properly,
they are of great value to the
community.
I am a founding member of
the Design Review Committee at
Victoria Park which has worked
effectively for 14 years so I have
experienced firsthand the good
work some committees do.
The objective of these
committees is to ensure
councillors and council officers
receive the best advice possible
on the acceptability of medium
to large-scale developments.
I watched a crisis
develop as projects
being pushed by the
council failed to meet
acceptable design
standards
They serve the community by
ensuring the built environment
is as good as it can be.
To be effective these
committees must act
independently and be unswayed
by political agendas.
These are the three major
issues which led to my decision
to stand down from the DAC.
Most deal with independence
and political agendas:
• On three occasions the DAC
was advised that ‘this project
is important to the city’ or ‘the
mayor wants to see this project
proceed’. I felt my independence
was weakened before evaluation
had even started. The desires
of the city or the mayor should
be irrelevant when undertaking
design evaluation.
• I was told by a senior officer
that at least one councillor edited
staff reports including comments
made about DAC findings. I
have since had this corroborated;
and,
• I discovered DAC reports
would go to the planning
committee and be ‘moulded’
into a final report before going to
full council.
Looking to make a
difference? So are we.
Choose Notre Dame
LINLEY LUTTON is an urban planner and until recently a
member of Fremantle city council’s design advisory committee.
Last week he quit from the committee, and now says he couldn’t
bear the politic interference and having his committee’s advice
fiddled with by a councillor.
One apartment block caused
the DAC great concern, but
the Planning and Services
Committee virtually ignored
its advice. They asked us to
focus only on the building’s
appearance.
Evaluating design goes
beyond appearance. Internal
amenity; environmental
performance; site planning;
traffic impact; functional and
spatial adequacy; serviceability;
impact on surrounding
properties; contribution to
the precinct; streetscape and
landscape; impact on the public
domain at street level; and,
impact on the micro-climate all
need evaluation, which takes
experienced experts.
When I complained about
what I felt was political
interference by the planning
committee I was told it was a
delegated committee with the
right to override DAC findings.
I accepted the right of elected
members to disregard DAC
findings, however argued the
full council should decide on
DAC findings, not a sub-set with
a strong pro-development group.
My objection and concerns
fell on deaf ears.
Victoria Park’s advisory
committee is highly regarded
and completely independent.
There is no opportunity for
councillors to mould its findings.
Political agendas simply do
not enter into the equation and
councillors are certainly not
allowed to edit any officer’s
report.
On Fremantle’s DAC I was
involved in assessing large-scale
strategic projects at the centre of
the council’s development drive.
On several projects the
DAC met with the proponents
over many months because
major problems were not be
adequately resolved. On several
occasions I suggested that we
hold workshops to resolve the
issues.
Even after these workshops
the proponents wouldn’t address
the shortcomings, which were of
a substantial nature.
The DAC could not stop
these projects because its terms
of reference limit its role to
giving advice. In Victoria Park,
support for a poor project can
be withdrawn making it very
unlikely to be approved by the
elected members. Developers
invariably lift their game.
I watched a crisis develop
as projects being pushed by the
council failed to meet acceptable
design standards.
Inevitably they were dealt
with by the planning committee
in a way which suited certain
pro-development agendas.
One problem with councillors
who lack planning and design
training taking things into their
own hands is that developments
get through and set a poor
precedent.
One particular project has
already opened the doors to a
raft of design precedents which
significantly lower the living
standards of apartment dwellers.
The whole idea of holding
the line on planning and design
issues—regardless of how much
the developer pushes their case
or the city wants it to occur—is
to ensure poor compromises do
not get built.
This is precisely why officers’
reports must not be edited by
untrained councillors.

5 reasons to choose Notre Dame
1 Notre Dame graduates have the highest
employment rate in WA.
Notre Dame is the only university in WA with a graduate
employment figure above 80 per cent.*
2. Industry and real world experience
Inevitably they
were dealt with
by the planning
committee in a way
which suited certain
pro-development
agendas.
The last straw for me was a
proposal for a large strategic site
coming back to the DAC with
no evidence the architects were
prepared to address the poor
relationship between the new
building and the adjacent public
domain—a very serious issue in
Fremantle.
My sense of futility was
overwhelming as here again was
another major strategic project
going down the same path of
compromise where the wants
of a developer override the best
outcome.
At Notre Dame, you will receive an excellent standard of
training for your profession of choice from leaders in their
field. You can get valuable on-the-job experience for your CV
through professional placements. Some courses also offer
opportunities to study interstate or overseas.

Bouquets to you
HEARTFELT thanks to the kind and
caring person who placed beautiful
flowers and a card on the fence at the
Melville Shopping Centre.
I wasdismayed and saddened recently
when my husband’s commemorative
flowers
were stolen a number of times.
How uplifting that someone cared
enough to put new flowers on the fence.
They brought me much joy. Thank you.

Bicton
Port Coogee now
— beautiful
I TOLD Ya So!
On February 15 it will be 10 years
since the rally’s on Coogee Beach for and
against the Port Coogee development.
It is still fresh how divided the
community was about this development.
The Coogee Coastal Action Coalition
with truckloads of help from the Herald
divided the community and opinions still
differ today.
10 years down the track the now
undeniable fact is this area of coast line
looks a thousand percent better. Coogee
beach is still there and all the disaster
scenarios failed to eventuate just as we
tried to tell people.
It is now the safest beach around
with the shark net (incidentally a similar
proposal was voted down at a Progress
Association meeting some years ago by
the same naysayers).
Coogee Beach, Port Coogee and CY
O’Connor beach are a great place used by
myself, my family and even my dogs.
The transformation from the polluted
and in places inaccessible coastline we
had is remarkable.
letters
Fallacious stories of financial ruin for
the community have proven to be false (of
course) with it being no secret previous
Fremantle council under Peter Tagliaferri
would gladly have annexed this area if
they could.
Opposition organisers claimed they
were not doing it for political gain despite
running in state and local elections on a
regular basis since.
The Herald in their attempts to deny
community support tried to imply
professional protesters were bussed
into the rally by the developer and its
supporters.
The only buses in fact were supplied
by the CCAC supporters to bus in
supporters from Leighton. I often wonder
if the CCAC members and supporters
(including the Herald) ever stop to ask
how they got it so wrong.
I took exception to Megan Jaceglav’s
article in Thinking Allowed (Bulldozed!
Herald, December 13, 2013). She states
that the Cockburn council is indifferent
to traffic congestion and builds and
develops without consideration for
residents.
I notice in her article she moved to
Spearwood seven years ago. Most of this
major development was well under way
at this stage.
Market gardeners have every right to
redevelop their land. I understand some
don’t like the change, but it should be
understood this is a product of Perth’s
population growth and no council will
change this.
The council should be judged
according to how it performs given this
pressure and by all accounts I receive and
see Cockburn are doing a fine job.
Former Cockburn mayor Stephen
Lee may have not understood probity
when allowing himself to get cornered
by self-interested parties with regard to
fund raising, but not withstanding this he
was elected twice as a champion for the
marina development. Cockburn council
should be applauded for their courageous
and mature leadership with regard to
development along the coast and in the
suburbs.
Dave Ward
Coogee
The Ed says: Thanks Dave, but the
Herald doesn’t pick sides in issues, it simply
reports on what people are saying and doing.
And here’s one to ponder: if Australand
was so convinced about the support for its
development, why did it stoop to funneling
secret donations into Mr Lee’s mayoral
campaign? Did you read the Corruption and
Crime Commission transcripts and report on
Port Coogee?
C’mon Aussies
I AM appalled at the clinical
execution of one of the marvels of
nature carried out by WA authorities.
The act of pumping four bullets into
the head of a majestic great white shark,
towing it out to sea and dumping it is
nothing short of barbaric.
Yes, we too in Auckland shot a shark
that had just killed a swimmer last year
but it does not make it right.
No, I do not rate sharks above humans,
but if someone went skateboarding in
the African jungle and was eaten by a
tiger, would we blame it and mount
a campaign to slaughter all the tigers
who went about their business of living
naturally as they have done for thousands
of years?
We are indeed a species to fear and
will not rest, it seems, until we have
wiped off the planet anything that is
dangerous to us, especially if it represents
a threat to commercial sporting events
and associated media coverage such as
the surfing competition coming up.
Come on Aussies, you are better than
this. Do not degrade yourselves to the
level of Japanese whalers in the southern
ocean. Stop this ridiculous and wasteful
slaughter!

• Rome Featherstone’s off to the World Youth Sailing Championships after acing it at the nationals.
by BRENDAN FOSTER
WHEN 13-year-old Rome
Featherstone saw the hundreds of
sailors he’d be up against in his first
Australian Youth Championships in
January he almost abandoned ship.
But he overcame his nerves and by the
end of the five-day regatta at Mornington
Peninsula, Rome was ranked the fifth best
under-16 optimist class sailor in Australia
and the best sailor at the competition.
Not bad for a kid who only took to the
water at the Fremantle Sailing Club two
years ago.
“I was hoping I’d get in the top 25,
but when I saw all the people, I thought
maybe top 50,” Rome told the Herald.
“A lot of them have been competing and
training around the world in Europe
and Asia. So to finish top five was really
good.”
Rome only made the “epic” car
crossing of the Nullarbor after his mum
Tikki Surman—a self-confessed average
country sailor—decided he should have
a crack.
Rome says 15 solo races over five days
left him exhausted.
“I was getting tired by the end of it,”
he said. “After the last race I was so tired
I didn’t even celebrate, I went straight to
bed.”
Rome has now qualified for the
Australian team competing at the World
Youth Sailing Competition in Argentina
later this year.
But the Waldorf School student is
realistic about his chances. Each of the 45
countries participating will put up their
best 25 sailors. The best any Aussie has
got before is 20th.
“I don’t know how I’ll go, but it’s
going to be really good fun,” he said.
Correction
CENTRELINK is not moving from
Fremantle to Cockburn, as we reported
on January 11. Federal human services
department manager Hank Jongen said
despite pulling out of a move into Queen
Victoria Street, the department was still
looking at properties “in the immediate
Fremantle vicinity” so it would be close
to local users. The Herald apologises for
giving any Freo clients conniptions—we
thought we’d been given a solid tip but
should have checked.

Survivor:

MANAGEMENT
WEEKEND
Pranayama, Yoga Postures and the many
techniques in yoga that bring stability,

international yogi, Swami Uditramananda.
by CARMELO AMALFI
THE “miracle survivor” of one of the
world’s worst shark attacks says the
Barnett government’s baiting strategy
is a step back to the vengeful sharkkilling days of Jaws.
South Australian documentary maker
and conservationist Rodney Fox has just
commemorated the 50th anniversary of
his near-death experience by returning to
the scene of his great white encounter.
Defending his title in a spearfishing
competition off Aldinga Beach, 65km
south of Adelaide, the December 1963
shark attack split open his abdomen,
broke all the ribs on his left side and
punctured his lungs.
Tooth embedded
Today, he still has part of a great white
tooth embedded in his right wrist.
He was away this week when the
Herald called, but speaking on his behalf
his son Andrew criticised the Barnett
government cull.
“It’s disappointing,” he says of the
new policy. “It’s a step back 40 years
when the film Jaws came out - we’re back
to taking vengeance on sharks.
“All the science and advice has been
thrown out of the window.”

Expert slams cull
by CARMELO AMALFI
ONE of WA’s foremost shark
authorities, author Hugh
Edwards, has slammed the Barnett
government’s kill-or-be-killed shark
policy as “hamfisted”.
Responding to outrage over the
first images of a dead shark caught off
Dunsborough on Australia Day, Mr
Edwards says all previous attacks have
involved great whites.
Yet the three-metre animal caught this
week was a female tiger shark, which the
fisherman initially believed was a bull
shark. Under the baiting policy due to
be introduced to metropolitan waters, all
three species are targets of baited drum
lines anchored one kilometres offshore.
Mr Edwards, author of the 2013 book
Shark: The Shadow Below, says dumping
of the shark body at sea was also dumb
when it could have been brought back for
further study.
“Money has been spent in the wrong
area and it has divided the community,”
he says, calling instead for more
research and protection systems such as
Cockburn’s Coogee Beach nets.
Protests
Announcing the release of video
they claim raises serious concerns over
the fishermen’s expertise, Greens South
Metro MLC Lynn MacLaren called on
the government to cancel the contract
awarded after the death of Chris Boyd, 35,
killed while surfing the Umbies surfbreak
off Gracetown.
She says the graphic images were an
“awakening” for the community, which
was largely opposed to the shark cull
the Greens plan to challenge legally, and
publicly.
Three protests are planned this
weekend in Cottesloe, Mandurah and
Meelup Beach where the tiger shark was
caught.
Swami Uditramananda Saraswati
recognised his guru Swami Sivananda Maharaj
in 1961 - he spent six years in deep sadhana
with the saints and sages at the foothills of
the Himalayas and has been teaching yoga
throughout the world for the Divine Life Society
since 1963 in the Sivananda style of Hatha Yoga.

Modern Elegance on the Esplanade
Experience the vibrant port side city
of Fremantle at the Esplanade Hotel
Fremantle - by Rydges. Famous for its
parkside location and rich Freo history,
this iconic establishment offers excellent
accommodation, delicious dining
options, and flexible conference & and
meeting facilities. It’s also the perfect
wedding venue.
Located in a premier position along
Marine Terrace, this grand old lady
was completed in 1830. It’s had many
colourful past lives, including convict
housing, laundry, warehouse, bakery
and bond house, before opening as a
hotel in 1896 at the height of the gold
rush., which brought much prosperity to
Fremantle.
Recent renovations have preserved
the Esplanade’s elegant character and
helped to create a wonderful mix of
old world charm and contemporary
style. The design concept incorporates
references to the history of the building
and Fremantle as a port city; the
furnishings and fittings also reflect this
period. The hotel’s main entrance and
lobby has been refurbished to create a
more open, light-filled space. The 300
guest rooms are well appointed, with
mini bar, wi-fi, IDD & STD dialling, LCD
TV with Foxtel and individually controlled
air-conditioning. Most have a private
balcony.
New restaurant, The Harbour
Master, offers fantastic food in a warm
atmosphere with historic Freo images
gracing the walls. The modern menu
celebrates the best of local produce
including steak, seafood, pasta, & pizza
and traditional desserts. There’s also
an impressive wine room and cocktail
bar. It’s a fabulous spot for the ladies
to get together, with Ladies Night every
Saturday from 5-7pm and High Tea
every Sunday from 3-5pm.
The completely refreshed Marine
Lounge Bar is finished too. This casual,
welcoming space is the ideal venue to
enjoy tapas, local & and international
wines and beers, premium spirits,
cocktails, or coffee and cake. Come
down for Happy Hour every Friday from
5-7pm, or drop in to catch live music
at Jazz & Shiraz every Sunday from
4-8pm.
Book now for Valentine’s Day. There
are two specials on offer: A $69 buffet
and a 4 course set menu dinner
for $75. Both offers come with two
complimentary glasses of Domaine
Chandon and a rose for each couple.
Make it an extra special weekend with
the Valentine’s accommodation package
from $370 per night.

HE White House in
Washington DC is
often seen as a symbol
of American democracy, yet
ironically the president’s
home is increasingly an
impenetrable fortress out of
reach of most voters.
Once noted for the 20,000
citizens who crammed in to
celebrate the 1829 inauguration
of president Andrew Jackson,
the White House’s open days
were axed after the 9/11 attacks,
the surrounding streets blocked
off after the Boston Marathon
bombing and just last year
public tours were canned during
the fiscal shut-down.
But Melville artist Steven
Tapping is attempting to bring
some of the democracy back,
giving visitors to his latest
exhibition the opportunity to
live out their White House
fantasies—even if it is just in the
virtual world.
Co-opting Google’s cultural
institute project, which takes
the search engine’s street
views inside famous museums
and buildings, Tapping will
project images of the interior
of the White House onto a
green screen, allowing people
to interact with the space and
“realise their ideas through
performance, direction,
installation, 3D modelling,
sound and media”.
“The White House is the
centre of democracy but

• Steven Tapping’s White House dream
is apparently to sweep its carpets.
the actual open space is as
undemocratic as you get,”
Tapping told the Herald. “So it’s
about democratising that space.
“It started out because I
was looking at how political
campaigns were being funded
and I stumbled across the
Obama web store for the 2012
campaign.
“And I realised as someone
that doesn’t live in the United
States you can’t purchase
anything from the web store
because you are financially
contributing to the electoral
campaign. So I found a third
party internet service that
purchased those goods for me.
“So I was financially
contributing to the campaign,
subversively I guess. So that got
the ball rolling about spaces and
how these space can be used.”
Tapping’s show Chroma Key
Aesthetics will run side-by-side
with artist Claire Bushby’s
TL;DR (Too late; didn’t read)
at the Heathcote Museum and
Gallery in Applecross until
February 23.
Bushby held workshops
• Claire Bushby
Cnr Onslow & Holland Sts, Fremantle
where participants were given
tweets and had to embroider
them before sending them back
to the original author.
Bushby said that, like Tapper,
she wanted to explore how social
media “enables everyone to be a
creative content producer”.
“The [workshops] centred
around issues about internet
communication and internet
privacy, so it’s not just a project
about cross-stitching,” Bushby
said.
Social media
“I was interested why some
people feel really isolated by
social media, yet for others it’s
really liberating and they feel
like they have much bigger
social circles.
“It was also interesting
that the majority of people
don’t have a twitter account,
so I wanted to know what the
fascination with it was.”
Both artists say they want
people to engage with the
works, which will continue to
develop once they’ve left the
gallery space.
“How we approach art has
changed,” Bushby says. “The
gallery space—the paintings
on the wall—it’s different to
how people experience visual
information now.
“With this exhibition there is
more of a platform for people
to come to and take part and
this exhibition isn’t the finished
work. Through online, it will go
wherever people take it.”
“My intention is to take my
hand off it and lose control,”
Tapping chimes in.
“People around the world can
keep contributing content and I
have no control over it.
It can keep becoming this
content-generating machine that
keeps producing work,” Bushby
says.

Heal Yourself with Yoga
A serious back injury over ten years ago was the beginning of Gaynor
Stanicic’s yoga journey. The wealth of benefits she experienced included
pain relief, increased flexibility, improved posture and strength, not to
mention a calmer, more peaceful mind.
Gaynor’s passion was born and from it came the idea of creating her
own studio - Mala Yoga, where she could help others on their own yoga
journey. “Our approach is to nurture students and help them develop a
deeper understanding of yoga and its benefits, rather than just taking a
class.” Gaynor explained.
Mala Yoga is the only Fremantle studio dedicated to Ashtanga yoga.
Being a friendly, smaller studio enables teachers to provide specialised
attention to each student. And yoga is for everyone - you don’t need
to be flexible or strong to begin. “The most successful students are the
ones that come to class regularly, as little as once a week.”.

F
REMANTLE is a constant
surprise–you never know what
you’ll find behind a heritage
facade or down a laneway.
Having seen the photos for this abode
I was puzzled when the agent took me
through automatic steel gates to a modern,
secure garage.
The building was once a bishop’s
residence, and a boarding house, before
becoming Mercantile Stevedores’
warehouse in 1898.
I may have been more prepared for the
soaring timber “front” doors I was about
to step through, if I’d paused to look at the
front of the building, rather than rushing
to get out of the sun.
The vendor converted the former
warehouse into two apartments, including
the one he’s lived in for the past 16 years.
(Part of Notre Dame’s school of medicine
is on street level).
The result is a stunning three-bedroom
apartment, covering 430sqm, that
wouldn’t look out of place on a smart
street in Rome.
A gargantuan, glass-roofed,
conservatory greets visitors as they top a
gracious limestone staircase.
Reaching high overhead, soaring ficus
trees create a veritable forest canopy, the
rich green contrasting with the limestonecoloured walls and floor, while the gentle
tinkle of a water feature is a soothing
touch.
Magical space
Floor-to-ceiling glass doors flank this
magical space, with two huge bedrooms
one side and a prodigious living/dining/
kitchen the other.
A baby grand piano and a cello are
dwarfed by the size of the voluminous
living area, where timber gantries soar
overhead and a massive limestone
fireplace (gas powered) adds to the air of
gracious living on a grand scale.
The commodious kitchen has a
Mediterranean look and feel, with it’s
golden timber bench tops, including an
island bench with a wine rack, and a walkin-pantry.
Nearby a spiral staircase leads to a

INNER CITY AT ITS FINEST
From the street, there is no hint as to what lies behind the tall arched windows.
Once you drive through your secure entry, you are in your own private and
peaceful oasis, secluded temporarily from the hustle and bustle of Fremantle’s
vibrant West End.
The choice of places to relax, entertain and retreat to are beguiling. A glassroofed conservatory filled with greenery and a tiled water feature provides a
restful, rustic retreat. Tall glazed doors connect the conservatory garden with the
master suite; a vision in cream-on-cream with hints of gold. The large bedroom
has a walk-in robe and ensuite, and adjoins a smaller bedroom, study or sitting
room with its own bathroom.
The kitchen, dining and living areas are all contained in a huge space with
massive timber beams and soaring, 6m high ceilings – a visual reminder of
the building’s varied past. The décor pays homage to the period, with elegant
drapes on the tall sash windows, a limestone fireplace, and a French countrystyle kitchen with a timber workbench.
Take the spiral staircase to the ‘secret’ rooftop terrace, with its tubs of red
geraniums and vine-covered pergola. Here, you can see without being seen – the
port, the famous Freo pines, the Maritime Museum, the ships coming and going

in the harbour. Enjoy Indian Ocean sunsets while you entertain – there’s a hidden
barbecue, a small kitchen with dishwasher and fridge for your convenience.
Finally, on the lower level are a guest bedroom, bathroom and laundry, along
with secure parking and storage.
This is a rare opportunity to move into a very private and secure inner-city
residence, with all the iconic and eclectic attractions of Fremantle and Fishing
Boat Harbour right on the doorstep.
Few have seen inside this extraordinary residence; fewer still will have the chance
to call it home.

Local Market
Takes Off
By HAYDEN GROVES
REIWA Deputy
President
As the property settlements from late
December begin to be reconciled at Landgate,
Perth’s median house price preliminarily reported
as a record $535,000 looks more likely to be a
surprisingly higher $545,000. Yet another record
that again raises the “affordability” issue. An issue
bound to be a topic of further discussion as the
year progresses if predictions of a median house
price hitting $570,000 come to fruition.
Little wonder that first home buyers are
making up less of the market at 26 per cent, down
from 29 per cent in September. Still a strong
number, comparative to, say, the Sydney market
where first time buyers represent less than 10 per
cent of all buyers.
Fremantle’s sub region
has been a stand out
performer

We know Freo.
Unsurprisingly, first home buyers are
beginning to give way to trade-up buyers, hence
the spike in median house price by some 9 per
cent from this time last year metropolitan wide.
Shifts in the composition of the market reveals
significant improvement in the upper price
quartile with, for example, sales above $1m
making up about 8 per cent of all sales, up from 6
per cent last quarter. Sales volumes have begun to
return to long term average levels too after a dip in
the September quarter, now back to levels caused
by the Rudd government’s artificial housing
stimulus of early 2008.
Fremantle’s sub region has been a stand out
performer with median house prices here moving
up to $827,000 for the quarter, an increase of 14
per cent. The data is preliminary but we have seen
an increase in sales volume of 26 per cent on the
previous quarter. Oddly, the average selling days
in and around the Port City pushed out an extra
three days to 64, the highest in the metro area.
Rents remain steady but rental stocks metro
wide are 135 per cent higher now than this time
last year pushing the vacancy rates beyond the
market parity of 3 per cent.
The market’s next move is always hard to
predict but the Fremantle residential property
market has matured in that the composition
of sales is more broadly spread, the median
price is rising and confidence amongst buyers
is improving. In the absence of some terrible
economic news such as higher than anticipated
unemployment figures coupled with inflationary
pressures causing upward pressure on interest
rates, the local market should carry forward well
this year.
It feels like Fremantle’s turning the corner
from its economic malaise and the buoyant
property market will not harm its future prospects.

Actually this delightful
Hickory Street, abode isn’t being
auctioned, but I couldn’t come
up with a better rhyme.
In the heart of South
Fremantle the turn-of-thecentury cottage, sitting on
455sqm, has been beautifully
renovated to meet today’s
lifestyle.
It’s nestled on a cul de sac
just one street back from South
Beach and comes with solar
passive design and a swag of
stylish, contemporary features.
(The end “wall” of the garage
is a massive, steel rainwater
tank, a great mix of function and
form).
The vendor’s planned on
staying here, so they created the
home they wanted to live in for
the long haul, renovating it to
become a four-bedroom/twobathroom family home.
But a career shift means
they’re heading off, leaving their
dream nest to another family.
Step off the wrap-around
verandah, overlooking a lovely
bush garden, and you’re struck
by space and light—in no small
turn thanks to a wall of bifold
doors at the far end onto a deck
and delightful garden.
Soaring ceilings, huge picture
windows, sets of louvres for
cooling cross-ventilation, and
glowing jarrah floors set the
seal on this lovely, and very
functional, living area.
The kitchen is a mix of
golden timber cupboards,
including a generous double
pantry, and easy-care stainless
steel benchtops.
Front-of-house is a formal
lounge, with cute leadlight/
stained glass windows and
French doors onto the verandah.
I can see dinner guests
moving from the dining room
to the lounge, with the doors
thrown open to catch the sea
breeze, sweetened by the smell
of eucalyptus from the mature
gum in the front garden.
The main bedroom is a
commodious space, with huge
windows onto the rear garden,
and a walk-in-robe.
A wall of glass in the ensuite
turns the shower into an atrium;
all the pleasure of outdoors,
without cold winds, or burning
mere minutes walk to the
beach and a swag of cafes and
restaurants, or jump on the CAT
bus and you’re in Fremantle
before you can say “Hickory,

A covered-timber deck off
the dining area is the perfect
spot for alfresco dining, or
simply sipping coffee over the

Surrounded by natural rock
formations, lush plantings, tall
trees and a swathe of grass,
you’ll be in no hurry to finish.
And should you prefer

Nannup Music Festival turns 25!
Immerse your senses in a weekend of music, art,
food and fun at the Nannup Music Festival 28
February to 3 March 2014.
Set in peaceful bushland, 2014 marks the
festival’s 25th year. There’s over 90 performers
appearing - from intimate sessions to the
amphitheatre at night, a line-up of old favourites
and oldies and exciting newcomers…lots of stuff
worth checking out.
Some special additions include a performance
and workshop with Archie Roach, an Anzac
celebration at the RSL with Ted Egan, Dingos
Breakfast and Dave Arden, comedy with Sami and a
live Debate ‘Is Sex Better Than Music’?
Tenzin Choegyal and The Tashi Lhunpo Monks
of Tibet will be here singing, performing and
creating a wonderful sand mandala. There will also
be some traditional favourites including a Beatles
singalong with Bernard Carney and The Poets
Breakfast on the Sunday morning.
The street will be lined with stalls and
entertainment, yummy food and hand made
products.
You can even try a workshop. There are guitar
master classes, songwriting, drumming, singing,
Tibetan meditation, improvised theatre and more.
The festival is a strong supporter of new artists,
showcasing their talents and helping them gain
exposure through the Emerging Artists Award.
You can purchase a camping or caravan site
with your festival ticket. All camping is at Nannup
Recreation Centre, Warren Road, which is within
walking distance of all venues. There are other
accommodation options in and out of town.
To celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary, this
year’s artwear parade will have a silver theme.
There’s something for everyone at this year’s
festival, so come on down to beautiful Nannup and
join in the fun!
For more details on the festival, visit www.
nannupmusicfestival.org or email info@

turn up when they say, if at all

We sing a mix of songs including pop, ballads, folk and
jazz. We rehearse in a relaxed casual atmosphere as we
sing for fun and enjoyment first and foremost, as well as
to become better singers and make great music. We are

February 1 - February 8, 2014
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
The new Moon in Aquarius bodes
well for getting fresh plans into action.
Others will fall into being overly conservative, or overly
emotional, as they react to your latest shift. Don’t make
matters worse. Let the sheer brilliance of your intent do
the talking. Fun is your barometer.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
Love is going through a profound process
of transformation. If you have been living
your relationships according to the interests of your
essence, then greater beauty will surface. If you
haven’t, then any false edifices built, will have to fall to
make room for greater beauty.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
The new Moon in Aquarius helps you
join the dots between the ideas that
turn you on and the emotional realities that tend to do
you in. It’s all very well to want to be free, but if you
freak out when the cage door is open, then we have a
problem. Find ways to get yourself onside.
CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)
Healing is the way through. The
karmic traffic is quite heavy in this
moment. Impetuousness isn’t working – and neither
is incremental patience. Too much of a hurry equals
trampled sensitivities. Refusing to move, to protect all
parties, doesn’t work either. Be sensitive and proactive.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)
The best thing to do is bide your
time. Most of the planetary action is
weighted against you. The way through is to accept
that the results of your reality-check are correct. Then,
get familiar with and be loving to, parts of yourself that
don’t have an easy time with not being omnipotent.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
As old defences fall away, love, kindness
and relationship knock on your door. Life is
more than capable of springing lovely surprises, when
we do the work of preparing ourselves to receive them.
Acceptance arises spontaneously, as the habit of nonacceptance exhausts itself.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
The presence of Mars’ V8 testosterone
running through your system, no longer
disturbs you. In fact you are growing quite fond of the
capacity for action that he is gifting you. The new Moon
in Aquarius fills you with unfurling buds of possibility.
Let forgotten playfulness through.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
In having both Saturn and the North
Node of the Moon in your sign, you
are being asked to move ahead and to move slowly at
the same time. The future is not rushing towards you.
In fact, you are the future - the moment you stop trying
to be someone else and start being yourself.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Spend time with friends. It is your tribe that
is your source of strength, in this moment.
The new Moon suggests a fresh beginning, the
budding of another monthly cycle. As you make your
friends, and the quality of friendliness, your home, so
your big heart expands some more.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Venus and Pluto are in quite a dance.
Pluto asks Venus to dive deep and enrich
her sense of delight. In the process he takes you with
him. Love isn’t going to let you get away with keeping
things light and fluffy. Explore a depth of affection that
grows with the changing seasons.
All advertisements are accepted on the following terms and conditions:
RIGHT TO REFUSE - The Company has the right to refuse to publish or
republish any advertisement without giving any reason.
DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY - No liability will be incurred by the Company
by reason of any amendment to or error or inaccuracy in, or the partial
or total omission of, an advertisement (single or multiple insertion) or by
reason of any delay or default or from any other cause whatsoever. If an
error occurs which in the opinion of the Company clearly lessens the value
of the advertisement and which is in no way the fault of the advertiser and
the advertiser notifies the Company of the error prior to the advertisement
deadline on the first day the error was published, then a refund will be
provided on the cost of the advertisement proportionate to the company’s
opinion of its reduced value.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
The freshly waxing Moon in Aquarius,
is offering you a powerful opportunity to
begin a fresh annual cycle. You are at the start of
another voyage around the Sun, on spaceship earth.
Begin it quietly inspired. Life is not letting up with the
adventures. Cease the struggle - just flow.
ADJUSTMENT AND CLAIMS - The advertiser must notify the Company
of any error in the invoice for an advertisement within 30 days from the end
of the month in which the advertisement was published. The company will
not consider claims for an invoice error lodged outside this period.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Life is drawing you towards situations
and feelings that test you. This test is to
come out of any slightly spacey, disembodied states,
confront scenarios and emotions that challenge you,
get real - and be transformed by the process. Move
into moments that put butterflies in your stomach.
