Dig into your stash of Debbie Mumm fabrics to create this pieced sampler and border quilt. Fabric Requirements Directional fabrics are not recommended. Fabric A- (Logs) Use 6 different fabrics One 1h” x 5h” piece One 1h” x 2h” piece Two 1h” x 4h” pieces Two 1h” x 3h” pieces Fabric B- (Corner Square) One 2h” square Fabric A- (Apple) One 4h” x 5h” piece Fabric B- (Background) Four 1h” squares Four 1” x 2i” Pieces Eight 1” squares Fabric C- (Stem) One 1” x 2h” piece Fabric D- (Leaves) Two 1h” x 2i” pieces Fish Cut the following for each of two blocks Fabric A- (Body) One 3h” x 6h” piece One 2h” square Fabric B- (Background) Two 2h” squares One 1h” x 5h” piece One 1h” x 2h” piece Two 1h” x 3h” pieces Eight 1h” squares Fabric C- (Head and Tail) One 2h” x 5h” piece One 2h” x 3h” piece One 1h” x 3h” piece Fabric D- (Fins) One 1h” x 4h” piece Two 1h” squares ©Debbie Mumm ©Debbie Mumm March-April 2012 Mumm’s the Word Anniversary Sampler Making the Blocks Make one block at a time referring to diagrams and fabric keys. Refer to Quick Corner Triangles directions. For each block, corner triangle units are made first and then the block is pieced. Pay close attention that corner triangle units are positioned the same as shown on the diagrams. It may be helpful to refer to the quilt layout on page 2 as you sew. Log Cabin Make a total of two log cabin blocks. Use g” seams throughout. 4. Sew unit from step 3 to one 4h” x 1h” Fabric A piece. Press. 5. Sew unit from step 4 to one 1h” x 4h” Fabric A piece. Press. 6. Sew unit from step 5 to one 5h” x 1h” Fabric A piece. Press. Log cabin will now measure 5h” square. 7. After making both blocks sew one 5h” x 1h”filler piece to bottom of one log cabin block and to top of second block. Press. 1. For each block sew one 2h” Fabric B square to one 1h” x 2h” Fabric A piece. Press. 2. Sew unit from step 1 to one 3h” x 1h” Fabric A piece. Press. 8. Sew 1h” x 6h” filler piece between log cabin blocks. Press. 3. Sew unit from from step 2 to one 1h” x 3h” Fabric A piece. For each block sew two 1” Fabric B squares to each of two 2i” x 1h” Fabric D pieces. Press. 5. Sew unit from step 4 to corner triangle unit from step 2. Press. Apple block will now measure 5h” x 6h”. 1b. Sew two additional 1” Fabric B squares to units from step 1a. Press. 2. Sew four 1h” Fabric B squares to one 5h” x 4h” Fabric A piece. Press. B= 1 h” x 1 h” A= 5h” x 4h” 3. Using g” seams, sew two corner triangle units from step 1b between four 2i” x 1” Fabric B pieces. Sew one 1h” Fabric D square to one 5h” x 1h” Fabric B piece. Press. 1a. For each block sew one 1h” Fabric B square to one 3h” x 2h” Fabric C piece. Press. 1b. Sew one additional 1h” Fabric B square to corner triangle unit from step 1a. Press. 7. Sew two 2h” Fabric B squares to one 2h” x 5h” Fabric C piece. Press. 1c. Sew one 2h” Fabric A square to corner triangle unit from step 1b. Press. 8. Using g” seams, sew corner triangle unit from step 1c between one 3h” x 1h” Fabric B piece and corner triangle unit from step 2. Press. 2. Sew one 1h” Fabric B square to one 3h” x 1h” Fabric C piece. Press. 9. Sew unit from step 8 to corner triangle unit from step 3. Press. 10. Sew corner triangle unit from step 4 to one 2h” x 1h” Fabric B piece. Press. 3. Sew one 1h” Fabric D square to one 3h” x 1h” Fabric B piece. Press. 4. Sew two 1h” Fabric B squares to one 4h” x 1h” Fabric D piece. Press. 11. Sew corner triangle unit from step 5 between units from step 10 and 11. Press. 13. Sew unit from step 12 between unit from step 9 and corner triangle unit from step 7. Press. Fish block will now measure 5h” x 11h” 14. Sew two sets of eleven 1h” filler squares together to make two 11h” x 1h” strips. Press all seams in one direction. Sew one 11h” x 1h” strip to the bottom of each fish block. Press. 15. The fish block used in row three needs filler squares added to the right side. Sew six remaining 1h” filler squares together to make a 1h” x 6h” strip. Press. Choose one fish block and sew strip to the right side. Press. ©Debbie Mumm ©Debbie Mumm March-April 2012
