STATIONS OF THE CROSS - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 29
During Lent we set aside time to remember God’s love for us, reflect on His
message, and re-commit ourselves to following in Jesus’ footsteps. The Stations
of the Cross serve as a wonderful tool for remembering, reflecting and recommitting ourselves to God.
This year, our Religious Education students will hold a special event The Stations of the Cross. It will look different from the traditional
Stations of the Cross. Several of the stations have been combined. All
of the stations will be presented in words, music and freeze-action
scenes.
We invite everyone to join us in the Parish Center for this
evening of prayer and reflection!

Cycles of Faith - 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
It was a year ago that I was in the hospital for the first time in my life. The minor
surgery meant that I had to stay overnight. When it came time for the dressing
change the next day, I thought that I was going to die from the intense pain. Of
course my brief experience of pain was nothing compared to the chronic
conditions or acute illnesses that so many people suffer each and every day. When
you think of all the people in hospitals or nursing homes, and the countless others
around the world who endure without any medical care, the enormity of suffering
seems overwhelming.
It is no wonder then that in Jesus' time once the crowds had heard that he cured
Simon's mother-in-law, they raced to bring to him all who were ill or possessed by
demons. If someone could alleviate the pain, cure the sick, and cast out demons
this was definitely an opportunity of which to take advantage.
While modern medicine may help us with our physical illness and psychological
pain, there is still a spiritual dimension to sickness that we should not ignore.
Sickness separates us. It makes us question our faith. Illness strikes at our heart as
well as our body. That is why the church offers the sacrament of the anointing of
the sick for any who are ill. When we are sick, we are also alone. We need the
support of the community of faith. And we need their prayers.
When a loved one is ill-or if you are sick yourself-don't hesitate to request the
sacrament of anointing. If your illness confines you for a longer time, ask to
receive Communion regularly to nurture you spiritually even as you seek to be
strengthened physically. People sought out Jesus in this weekend's Gospel. When
we or a loved one is ill, we can seek him out today.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
CHRISTIAN FORMATION CORNER - Feast & Blessing of St. Blaise
We know more about devotion to St. Blaise by Christians around the world than we know about the saint himself. His
feast is observed as a holy day in some Eastern churches. The Germans and Slavs hold him in special honor and for
decades may United States Catholics have sought the annual St. Blaise blessing for their throats.
We know that Bishop Blaise was martyred in his Episcopal city of Sebastea, Armenia, in 316. The legendary Acts of St.
Blaise were written 400 years later. According to them, Blaise was a good bishop who worked hard to encourage the
spiritual and physical health of his people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311) granting freedom of worship in the
Roman Empire was already five years old, persecution still raged in Armenia. Blaise was apparently forced to flee to the
back country where he lived as a hermit in solitude and prayer, but he made friends with the wild animals. One day a
group of hunters seeking wild animals for the amphitheater stumbled upon Blaise’s cave. They were first surprised and
then frightened. The bishop was kneeling in prayer surrounded by patiently waiting wolves, lions and bears.
As the hunters hauled Blaise off to prison, legend has it, a mother came with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in
his throat. At Blaise’s command the child was able to cough up the bone. Because of this incident, Blaise is called patron
of ailments of the throat.
Agricolaus, governor of Capppadocia, tried to persuade Blaise to sacrifice to pagan idols. The first time Blaise refused, he
was beaten. The next time, he was suspended from a tree and his flesh torn with iron combs or rakes like those used by
English wool combers. Those wool combers took Blaise as their patron saint. They could easily appreciate the agony the
saint underwent. Finally, Blaise was beheaded.
Four centuries give ample opportunity for fiction to creep in with fact. We cannot be sure how accurate Blaise’s
biographer was, but St. Blaise is still called the patron saint of throat ailments. Blaise is seen as one more example of the
power those who give themselves entirely to Jesus have. As Jesus told his apostles at the Last Supper: “If you remain in
me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7) With faith we can
follow the lead of the Church in asking for Blaise’s blessing.
On February 3 (or the weekend closest to his feast day) we can have the privilege of
having our throats blessed. This year at our parish on the weekend of February 4 & 5, the
blessing will be given at the end of both masses. Father, using two candles tied together with
a red ribbon, will hold those candles at the throat of each person who comes forward, and say
the words of blessing: “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God
deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Our response is “Amen.”
