Cool with fans - Electric fans use less energy than air conditioning units and offer good air circulation and cooling. Using a fan with air conditioning helps spread cooled air more effectively through the house Use your appliances during “off-peak” hours - Using major appliances, such as dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, electric ranges and air conditioners, at offpeak hours can dramatically reduce the demands on the state’s electrical power reserves. Plant trees and shrubs near your air conditioning unit. Be careful not to block the airflow. A shaded unit can save as much as 10 percent less electricity. Clean refrigerator coils at least once a year. Make sure there is a space between the wall and the unit so the refrigerator gets air to cool the compressor. Use energy efficient light bulbs. They last longer and use less energy. Close drapes to keep out the hot daytime sun. Sunny windows make air conditioners work two to three times harder. Change air conditioner filters regularly. Dirty filters cause air conditioning systems to work harder than necessary and use more energy. Delay laundry and dishwasher chores until night. This will reduce demand on your air conditioner and your local electric system. Prepare meals that don’t require the oven or stove. Save energy and keep your house cooler at the same time! City law prohibits signs from being placed in the public right of way because they make the community unsightly, create traffic safety problems by obstructing the field of vision and create nuisances for nearby properties. The public right-of-way includes the shoulders of roads, the area between the sidewalk and the street, and light poles. Those posters on light poles and signs by the side of the road advertising weight loss products, babysitting, windshield repair and garage sales are illegal! The crackdown should be especially noticeable on weekends, as city code enforcement officers have begun working staggered shifts, which means they’ll be out and about on Saturdays and Sundays. Summer Concert Series Round Rock Parks and Recreation and La Frontera are kicking off the fourth year of Sendero Springs HOA Newsletter free summer concerts at La Frontera’s Central Green (intersection Sundance Pkwy and La Frontera Blvd). The concerts are from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month. Bring a picnic, blanket and the family and enjoy the free concert. The bands will be available afterwards to sign CD’s and Tshirts. The next scheduled concert is on July 17. Visit the City’s web site for more information. http://ci.round-rock.tx.us/parksrec/concert_series.html Watering calendar for summer The City of Round Rock encourages citizens to follow the five-day watering calendar on the City’s web site at http://www.ci.roundrock.tx.us/public-works/wtrclndr.html. This program helps spread out the amount of water used daily and minimizes the demand on the water system. 5K for Clay The Clay Madsen Recreation Center will hold the second annual 5K for Clay fun run/walk to benefit the Rec Center at 8 a.m. Saturday, August 27. Cost for adults is $15 through August 19 and $25 on race day. Children are $10 through August 19 and $20 on race day.
