Crime Watch Corner
Block Captains Host Block Parties!
Three of our Block Captains have hosted Block Parties
this year! Big congratulations to Jennifer Rubin
(Luminoso E. south cul-de-sac), Chris Cantu & Tiffany
Mokry (Luminoso E. northwest section), and Cynthia
Elkins (in lieu of a block captain on Luminoso W.) for
organizing a get-together for their blocks.
Our neighborhood is divided into roughly 30 “blocks”
consisting of about a dozen neighbors whose
homes are within site of each other’s. When given
the opportunity to meet socially once or twice a
year, neighbors can exchange information, renew
relationships and become acquainted with new
neighbors.
People who communicate regularly will care more
about each other and be more willing to keep an eye
out for suspicious behavior.
We currently need 19 more Block Captains. It’s an

How to Report a Crime/Suspicious Activity
The recommendation to all citizens who see a crime
in progress or notice suspicious activity is to observe
and report from a place of safety.
It is strongly suggested that you not confront an
offender unless you are in immediate danger. This
applies to you and your neighbors. Nobody wants
anyone to get hurt or injured trying to apprehend an
offender or interfering with an incident other than to
report the activity to the police.
If you or your neighbors witness a crime in progress
or observe suspicious behavior, call 911 (emergency)
or 943-1389 (non-emergency).
If in doubt, make the call. It’s always better to have
your suspicions be incorrect vs. not taking action
and missing an opportunity to prevent a crime from
occurring.

Hello Neighbors! Since January we have welcomed approximately
52 new residents to Sendero Springs. It has been so nice meeting
everyone. We hope you have enjoyed the Welcome Packet and
found the information helpful. If you have any questions about
the neighborhood please feel free to get in touch with me at

of the new residents to register on the Sendero Springs website

neighborhood events. It is a great way to keep updated on what is

Meet Your Neighbors
Sendero Residents,
Every Friday evening at around 6 PM, we have an informal gathering
at the Sendero pavilion. Please join us when your schedule
permits. Bring food and beverages. There is usually plenty of hot
charcoal with which to grill. This is a great opportunity to meet your
neighbors without having to clean your house before or afterwards.
Frivolity starts when people show up and ends when everyone
leaves.

This year we will be having another wonderful party at the Wingate
Hotel! It will include delicious food, hot chocolate, a visit from Santa,
and a kids holiday craft. All the planning is still in the works and the

you can bring your family and come celebrate the Holiday and New
Year with your friends and neighbors!

Sendero Springs has a quarterly community newsletter that is provided
by RealManage. Inside the newsletter you will find various articles
related to your community. Articles will range on topic from seasonal
yard tips, Sendero Springs events, to other useful
announcements and information. The newsletter is
YOUR newsletter. If you have an idea, helpful tips to
share, or just want to speak your mind the newsletter

3. Make sure the lamps do not rest on the supply cord or on any wire.
4. Avoid covering lights with cloth, paper or any material that is not part of
the lighting.
5. Throw away any lighting that shows cut, damaged or frayed wire insulation or cords. Also discard lights with cracks in lamp holders, loose connections or exposed copper wire.
6. Virtually all holiday lighting is provided with overload fuse protection. A
blown fuse indicates an overload or shortcircuit situation. When this occurs, unplug
lights from the outlet immediately and
replace the blown fuse.

Winter Yard Tips
Fertilize: Fertilize strawberry beds with a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer. Keep soil moist to promote good plant vigor
and berry production next spring.
Water: Water everything well before a freeze, but avoid overwatering.
Transplant: Divide and replant crowded perennials throughout the winter months.
Prepare Soil: Have landscape and garden soils tested now to determine soil balancing needs.
Lawn Care: A mulching mower makes raking leaves obsolete or use a grass catcher as a mulch catcher. Use shredded leaves and grass
clippings as mulch or put into the compost bin.
Diseases/Pests to look for: Watch roots of removed annuals for nematodes (knots on the roots). Check houseplants for spider mites,
scale and mealy bugs.
Prune: After blooming, chrysanthemums should be cut back almost to the ground. Prune long, gangly shoots on shrubs. Remove
dead and damaged wood from shrubs and trees.
Fertilize: Feed winter bloomers such as alyssum, dianthus and especially pansies every 4-6 weeks.
Water: Water everything well before a freeze to protect against cold injury, but avoid overwatering.
Soil: Transplant bare root and container grown roses, shrubs, trees, groundcovers and vines so they get
established before warm weather arrives next summer.
Prepare Soil: Prepare dormant beds for spring planting: clean out dead and spent plants, compost to enrich the organic content of the
soil. Check winter mulch and replenish if needed. Stockpile leaves for mulching and composting throughout the spring and summer.
Lawn Care: Run mower and trimmer engines dry of gasoline, drain and change oil. Take them to the repair shop now to avoid the
spring rush. Clean and oil ALL tools before storing for winter.
Fertilize: Fertilize asparagus, strawberries, daylilies, iris, pansies and roses. Use compost, manure or a
complete fertilizer.
Water: Water everything well before a freeze, but avoid over watering.
Transplant: Plant bare root and container grown roses, shrubs, trees, groundcovers and vines. Move hardy seedlings outdoors. Divide
and transplant perennial herbs and summer and fall blooming perennial flowers.
Prepare Soil: Add compost and/or fertilizer. Till deeply. Test soil (forms available at the Extension Office). Check winter mulch and
replenish, if needed. Stockpile leaves for mulch and composting throughout spring and summer.
Lawn Care: If lawn has a history of brown patch problems, treat with a labeled fugicide late in the month. Repeat treatment in 3 to 4
weeks, if needed.
Diseases/Pests to look for: Check for mealy bugs and for scale on houseplants.

Christmas Family Night in Round Rock
The City of Round Rock rings in the season with the annual Christmas Family Night celebration on Friday, December 12,
2008 in historic
downtown Round Rock. The event kicks off at 6:30 PM with a welcome from Round Rock Mayor,
Nyle Maxwell, followed by the illumination of the street with holiday lights. Then Santa makes his
grand entrance in a horse-drawn sleigh.
During Christmas Family Night, downtown historic Round Rock is decorated with small wooden
houses which “house” various free games and activities. This free event includes activities for the
entire family including live music, dancers, Cowboy Bunkhouse storytellers, candle making, carriage rides,
game booths, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Clause and more. Guests can also shop for holiday gifts at the Christmas Family
Night market.
Children need to bring their “wish lists” for Santa Clause (pictures with Santa are only $1). Plus, enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn,
hot chocolate, and other refreshments, activities and snacks. Shop arts and crafts in the Christmas Family Night market
where vendors will display holiday gifts for sale.
In 2005, a new tradition was started. The tree topper on the Christmas Family Night tree symbolized an ideal for Round
Rock– something significant that happened during the year that will have lasting effects on our community. In 2005, Mayor
Maxwell lit the “candle of knowledge” in recognition of the Round Rock Higher Education Center. In 2006, we celebrated the
prosperous year for the City of Round Rock with the “parcel of prosperity.” What will it be in 2008? Come out and see!
Enjoy performances throughout the evening from Connie Coyote and her Unicycle Horse-Calamity Joe, Ballet Folklorico,
Kinderdance, All-Stars Unlimited, Ridgeview Middle School Choir, Grace Presbyterian church and Stony Point High School
Jazz Lab Band.
Children will enjoy pinata breaks scheduled at 6:45 PM for 4-7 year olds, 7:15 PM for 8-10 year olds, and 7:45 PM for 11-12
year olds. Numerous booths will feature activities and crafts for children from cookie decorating to candle making.
Christmas Family Night is organized by the City of Round Rock and made possible thanks to the help of the many
community groups and organizations that donate their services to offer this fun and free event to the community.
Free parking is available in the City Hall parking garage, at the library and along side streets. The event begins at 6:30 PM.
Directions: To get to downtown Round Rock take I-35 and go East on 620 (Main St.) about two blocks. For more
information on Christmas Family Night call the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation office at 512-218-5540.
Holiday Sweets: Chocolate Coconut Pie
1 1/2 Tblsp. butter or margarine, softened
1 cup flaked coconut
3 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 12 oz pkg. sweet cooking chocolate, broken
into pieces, or milk chocolate chips
1/4 cup milk
Whipped topping
Chocolate curls
. Spread the butter evenly on the bottom and sides of a 9
inch pie pan.
2. Press in the coconut to form a shell.
3. In a blender, combine the eggs, sugar, cream cheese,
chocolate and milk. Blend until smooth.
4. Pour into pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
5. Cool.
6. Garnish with whipped topping and chocolate curls.
Refrigerate leftovers.

This Year Thanksgiving is on November 27th, 2008
In 1621, after a hard and devastating first year in the New World, the Pilgrim's fall harvest was very successful and plentiful.
There was corn, fruits, vegetables, along with fish which was packed in salt, and
meat that was smoke cured over fires. They found they had enough food to put
away for the winter.
The Pilgrims had beaten the odds. They built homes in the wilderness, they raised
enough crops to keep them alive during the long coming winter, and they were at
peace with their Indian neighbors. Their Governor, William Bradford, proclaimed a
day of thanksgiving that was to be shared by all the colonists and the neighboring
Native American Indians.
The custom of an
annually celebrated
thanksgiving, held after
the harvest, continued
through the years.
During the American Revolution (late 1770's) a day of national
thanksgiving was suggested by the Continental Congress.
In 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual
custom. By the middle of the 19th century many other states also
celebrated a Thanksgiving Day. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln
appointed a national day of thanksgiving. Since then, each president
has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation, usually designating the
fourth Thursday of each November as the holiday.
