The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement symbolizes our shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we love. The Relay For Life of Sidney is set for Friday, July 25 from 7:00 p.m. until midnight at the Richland County Fairgrounds in 6LGQH\$VXUYLYRUGLQQHULVSODQQHGSULRUWRWKHHYHQW·VRSHQLQJ ceremony from 6:00-7:00 p.m. The Relay For Life of Sidney is no different than the thousands of events that occur every year. Held overnight, individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers during Relay. Funds raised at Relay For Life enable the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer in Sidney and across the state of Montana by offering a number of free programs and services available to cancer patients and their families, including: Look Good Feel Better – Available in Sidney, Look Good Feel Better is a program that provides women with cancer an educational session run by volunteer licensed beauty professionals on how to manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment with the use of scarves, wigs, makeup, etc., Look Good Feel Better and the wonderful people that volunteer their time help women to truly feel better about themselves. Patient Lodging Program²7KH6RFLHW\·V3DWLHQW /RGJLQJ 3URJUDP ZRUNV ZLWK hotels to provide free or reduced rate accommodations to cancer patients and their families traveling long distances for treatment. Patient Navigators – Trained staff members provide guidance for cancer patients, their families and caregivers to help them through the cancer treatment experience, with a focus on identifying and eliminating barriers to cancer care for the medically underserved. Reach to Recovery – An American Cancer Society program that links newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with survivors to offer information, answer questions and provide support while serving as role models for life after breast cancer. Relay For Life also supports the American Cancer Society cancer research program, helping to fund researchers with cutting-edge investigations and studies. The Society is currently funding 869 grants nationwide totaling more than $446 million. Funds raised also support cancer.org, the American CanFHU 6RFLHW\·V RIÀFLDO ZHEVLWH which offers the latest information and news on cancer and helps residents in Montana locate resources in their community each month, and WKH6RFLHW\·V 24-hour information line which provides free information and support to Montanans every month. Summer Sale On Now! Submitted by Ludmila Keller Seventy percent of Montanans make no provisions for the management and distribution of their property after their deaths. Despite concern for families, friends and property during their lifetime, they fail to provide guidance when it is most needed – when they are no longer present to make decisions. Dying without a will is called dying “intestate” and means that state and federal regulations will determine the distribution of assets. Many do not realize that if they die without a will, Montana Intestate Law provides for the disposition of their property. Generally, when dying without a will Montana law states the following rules (any many more): $QKHLUPXVWVXUYLYHWKHGHFHGHQWIRUÀYHGD\V (120 hours) to inherit under intestate statutes. Otherwise, the heir is considered to have predeceased the decedent, DQGWKHGHFHGHQW·VKHLUVDUHGHWHUPLQHGDFFRUGLQJO\ - Stepchildren will not inherit. - If the deceased does not have any living relatives, his/her estate will go to the Montana government. - Without a surviving spouse, children or parents, estate will be transferred to the closest relatives, who can be someone the deceased has not spoken to in years or not even known. A carefully written legal will, however, will provide for IDPLO\DQGRWKHUVLQDPDQQHUFRQVLVWHQWZLWKDSHUVRQ·V desires. Other estate planning options also exist, such as joint tenancy with right of survivorship, payable on death designations (PODs) or transfers on death registrations All New Shoes Ladies Swimwear (TODs). Montana State University Extension provides a wide array of information on estate planning, such as the MontGuides that can be downloaded at http://store. msuextension.org/. Free copies can also be picked up at Richland County Extension, located at 1499 N Central Ave, Sidney. MontGuide topics include letter of last instructions, dying without a will, probate in Montana, GHVLJQDWLQJEHQHÀFLDULHVWUDQVIHUULQJQRQWLWOHGSURSHUW\ and many more. 20% off 30-40% off Spring & Summer Fashions or % get % FR Clothing 20off 30off 20% off If you buy 3 or more! It can also be hard for them to believe that, IF a person graduated from high school (and many times that was a big IF) there were not many career opportunities aside from staying at home and helping mom and dad make a living. In 1914, these were almost exclusively the conditions in our part of the country and across much of the rest of the nation. That is exactly the reason that the Cooperative Extension Service was created. 1914 is the year that the Smith-Lever Act was signed into law. I will not bore you with the ins-and-outs of the ODZVSHFLÀFDOO\EXWHVVHQWLDOO\ the Smith-Lever Act called for a national system where research being conducted at the land-grant university in each state could be disseminated and shared with the rest of the citizens in the state who could not get away to attend college themselves. Where it is common practice now for several agencies to align with others to accomplish tasks, the Smith-Lever Act was one RIWKHÀUVWWRFRPELQHIXQGLQJ from the USDA, the land-grant university system, and county governments to accomplish the goals set forth in the Act. Initially, the job of an extension agent was solely to help produce more food. Demonstration plots, insect scouting, yield trials and variety trials were all part of the iniWLDOH[WHQVLRQDJHQW·VMREZLWK the understanding that it was too much of a task for a farmer to get to the university where these things were taking place but if the information could be brought to him or her and demonstrated on land similar to what he or she was taking care of, then adoption of the practice would be more likely. Eventually, the home demonstration agent (now referred to as the family and consumer sciences agent) was added to the extension force. This person was there to help farm families with things like canning, sewing, house maintenance and other things. Later it was determined that children FRXOG EHQHÀW IURP HGXFDWLRQ and leadership skills taught at the land-grant university as well, so a 4-H agent was added to the roster too in order to help kids learn valuable skills needed to ensure not only a successful childhood but also a successful transition into adulthood. The reason that I am mentioning all of this is that, as you may have already concluded, we are celebrating 100 years of the extension service. On July 24th, the Eastern Agricultural Research Center (also DIÀOLDWHG ZLWK 0RQWDQD 6WDWH University, our land-grant inVWLWXWLRQ LQ 0RQWDQD ZLOO EH KROGLQJWKHLUDQQXDOÀHOGGD\ EHJLQQLQJDW$0:KHQ WKH ÀHOG GD\ FRQFOXGHV ZH would like to invite you to stay and help celebrate our 100th birthday.
