SEME STE R LY M AGAZIN E TANJONG KATONG PRIMARY SCHOOL Principal’ s Message TKP Heritage Programmes Katong has a very special place in my heart. I spent 6 years staying in Katong when I went to schools in the east during my teenage years. Coming back to Katong as the Principal of Tanjong Katong Primary brings back fond memories and, at the same time, carries a personal meaning in how I steer the school in the years ahead. Tanjong Katong Primary (TKP) is a relatively young school, being a 14-year-old school. However, it inherited the combined history and heritage of the 3 schools, namely Fowlie Primary(merger of Seraya and Fowlie), Haig Boys and Mountbatten Primary which had amalgamated to form TKP in 2001. In fact, a number of our current staff members were teachers who had taught in the 3 ancestral schools. Located in this part of Singapore, TKP is set in an environment in which there are rich history, heritage, cultures and traditions. With this as a backdrop, the school set out to develop heritage programmes in its aim to develop a sense of belonging and rootedness to the school and the community. In conjunction with SG50, interactive trails(i-Trails) on Katong, “Colours of Life in Katong” and “Katong through the Ages” were created by our students for other students to learn about Katong’s multiculturalism and its developments over the years respectively. The TKP Heritage Gallery which records the history of Katong and the school will also be launched on 19 November, during the2 Prize-giving Ceremony. These TKP heritage programmes, i-Trails together with activities designed around the Heritage Gallery, will be integrated into the Social Studies curriculum at the appropriate levels to enrich students’ learning. New Vision and Values After a year of engaging the students, staff, parents and other stakeholders to re-envision for the future of the school in the context of a fast-changing world, the vision has been revised; as follow: t1BTTJPOBUF-FBSOFST t$BSJOH-FBEFST t(MPCBM$JUJ[FOT TKP students will be guided by the revised school values, PR IDE: Pride Respect Responsibility Integrity Discipline Empathy Together with parents, other stakeholders and the larger community, we hope to provide a holistic education and a dynamic learning environment in order that the students can excel in their pursuits and contribute to the society. As we celebrate TKP’s 15th anniversary next year, we would like to build on the good work by the pioneer generations of the ancestral schools and the school leaders and staff of the more recent past and nurture the next generation of leaders and citizens for the future of Singapore. 2 TRIBUTE TO OMEGA CHALLENGERS Remembering Our Loved Ones The Road to Recovery In June 2015, 29 P6 students and 8 teachers went on a Mount Kinabalu expedition as part of the Omega Challenge, Omega Challenge, an apex leadership programme for its student and CCA leaders. The main objective of the programme is to allow the leaders to exercise leadership qualities and develop the spirit of courage, resilience and teamwork. Unfortunately, 9 lives were lost from this group when an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck unexpectantly on 5 June. We remember: The 7 students Navdeep Singh Jaryal S/O Raj Kumar (6C) Emilie Giovanna Ramu (6F) Matahom Karyl Mitzi Higuit (6F) Ameer Ryyan Bin Mohd Adeed Sanjay (6O) Rachel Ho Yann Shiuan (6O) Sonia Jhala (6O) Wee Ying Ping Peony (6O) The 2 teachers Mr Mohammad Ghazi Bin Mohamed Mr Loo Jian Liang Terrence Sebastian Words of care and support from our Leaders To begin the healing process, parents of the affected students from the expedition initiated an observance ceremony where the surviving students released caged birds and balloons at the school parade square. Parent Support Group members took the students to the South East Asian Games to help lift their spirits. In the hopes of helping the affected group to seek closure, MOE HQ coordinated a reunion on 17 June between the team, their family and the Mountain Torq instructors who were with them during the expedition. A Day of National Remembrance was declared by the Prime Minister on 8 June. State flags on all government buildings were flown at half-mast. As TKP reeled from the devastating news, the TKP community (including former students, staff and Parent Support Group members), members of the education fraternity and the Ministry of Education Headquarter (MOE HQ) reached out immediately to provide support. They set up a tribute centre and spent hours manning the centre and helping to usher visitors. MOE HQ also provided expertise including Care Officers and manpower to support affected students and staff. The unprecedented outpouring of well-wishes, condolences and solidarity from the community and members of public gave us strength and comfort and TKP is grateful beyond measure. Members of the community from all walks of life came to give their well wishes and support to our TKP family When the Primary 6 students returned to school for supplementary lessons one week prior to school reopening, there were lesson packages crafted by MOE and the Primary Six teachers to support their transition back to school. The students were provided a platform for them to talk about their feelings with their form and co-form teachers and learned how to manage their post-traumatic stress. The immense outpouring of love, kindness and prayers from the community TRIBUTE TO OMEGA CHALLENGERS When school reopened, students and staff were greeted by balloons and sunflowers at the school entrance with the message “Little Bravehearts and Courageous Teachers”. It was a gesture of solidarity by Mr James Ho who had lost his daughter, Rachel Ho in the disaster, on behalf of the parents of the victims. Bouquets of flowers were also prepared to be given to every student and staff. “It is our own small way of making sure the TKPS community settles in and adapts back to life here,” said Mr Ho. During the morning assembly, principal Mrs Wu addressed the school, “We are all very saddened by the loss. And as a nation, Singapore mourned together with Tanjong Katong (Primary School). However, we will be there for one another, and I know we can do it as a school.” After the assembly, students returned to their form classes where they were encouraged to share their feelings about the tragedy. Their form teachers also shared ways of coping with the loss. Students were reminded to be respectful to those affected, including those who had lost their siblings to the quake, and to be compassionate to their friends and teachers. A tribute booth was set up at the NE gallery for students to pen their thoughts as well. Despite the sombre start to the semester, Mrs Wu believes that TKP will move on, stronger than ever, “We are regaining our strength, we are healing ... We are moving on and I am really very confident that with the support of our parents, resilience of our staff and students, we will be able to bounce back, recover and we will emerge from this stronger.” “We may be all blessed by the lessons we learn from the way you lived. ” 3 4 DEVELOPING OUR STUDENTS HOLISTICALLY P4 Camp bag, a poncho and torchlight. I was curious about what we were going to 31 July 2015 use the torchlight for. I found out later Dear Diary, that we were to use it during the Tomorrow, my friends and I are going for campfire. I felt a twinge of excitement just before I left for school on the day of What I liked about the dragon boating the camp. We had a list of things to pack was that we learnt to work together to row as a team. Sure, it didn’t work out including a sleeping that well at first with all of us paddling at different pace, but we kind of got the hang of it after some time. Together, our boat managed to come in third in the race. Much to my despair, it was raining that night so we could not have the campfire outdoors with a real fire pit. The good news was that there was an indoor campfire set up with a huge red pail and torchlight to create the effect of a fire. Well, at least our performance went well. After the campfire, we had supper and took a nice shower before lights out. Today, before we broke camp, we played water war! This was such a memorable activity as it felt like I was playing in the rain! I can’t wait for the next school camp! The outdoor learning experience integrated two themes: Plant System and Plant Cycles, which culminated in a hands-on experience where students grew their own vegetables in hydroponic kits using nutrient solution. When the students were asked what they enjoyed most about their hydroponic experience, this was what students from 4 Altruism had to say: Hayley: This is the first time I see a different method of growing plants. Soo Hwang: We learnt that hydroponics take up less space and this method is good for a land-scarce Singapore. But not all plants are suitable for hydroponics. Dhzreen: It was fun changing the nutrient solution every week to prevent it from drying up so that the roots could take in water. Tate: The best part was that we each had a pack of vegetables to bring home! Seed Dispersal (Primary 5) How do we excite our students in learning about fruit and seed dispersal besides showing them videos? Like their P4 counterparts, our P5s were scheduled in July and August for hands-on learning experiences conducted by trained facilitators at the Science Centre. How did our 5 Altruism students find the learning experience? Karan (5 Altruism): It was a very informative, enriching and invaluable lesson. I have never seen most of the seeds/fruits shown. The practical demonstration brought the concept to life and that helped me understand better. Rushi (5 Altruism): I had a blast of a time both indoors and outdoors. We got to watch a video, examined each seed or fruit and discussed the features that helped them disperse. Then, the facilitator took us to the garden to prove how some fruits could float on water or get blown by the wind. I was certainly blown over by the African Tulip! For one & for all.” Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 3rd September to the theme “Retro”. The celebration began with the students expressing their gratitude to their teachers in the classrooms before proceeding to the hall for a concert. Hosted by our student emcees, Shean Bin Shahrin Buligis (5 Altruism) and Suphasiri How (5 Olympism), the concert included items such as drums and song and dance performances. The hall was filled with nostalgia as music from the 70s and 80s were played. Before reciting The Teachers’ Pledge, our School Leaders also presented each teacher with a customised mug, decorated by our very own Art Club students. A video was also presented as a tribute to all teachers, showcasing the many recent activities our teachers had participated in. Those were some of the words being recited by the Student Leaders as they take their pledge on 13 July. The school came together to observe the Student Leaderz Investiture Ceremony where due recognition was accorded to both the outgoing as well as the incoming Student Leaders. This year’s Investiture Ceremony was an exceptionally emotional one as we remembered several key members of the Student Leaders Council whom we lost in the Sabah Quake tragedy. Nonetheless, we recognised and celebrated the efforts and contributions made by these Student Leaders. As we celebrated the contributions of outgoing leaders, we saw the road being paved for the incoming Primary 5 Student Leaders. It is their turn then to take up their roles as leader . The newly appointed President, Shean Shahrin Buligis from 5 Altruism rallied the support of all the students with a quote from one of his favourite reads, Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. With much planning and hardwork of our ever-supportive Parent Support Group (PSG), teachers and TKP staff were treated to a scrumptious brunch, comprising a buffet spread of homemade food items as well as retro eats such as kacang putih. The PSG and students literally transformed the AVA room into a restaurant with a “Retro” feel. The celebration ended on a high note with every teacher bringing home a handmade star-shaped card and a lucky draw prize. “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.” School leaders cutting the cake at Teachers' Day brunch Teachers all ready for smiles for the camera on Teachers' Day Our zealous student servers! Teachers enjoying their brunch Newly Appointed P5 Student Leaders taking their pledge, led by the President and Deputy President Student Leader, Shean Sharin Buligis and Xu Shing De Racial Harmony Day (RHD) Fun and laughter filled every corner of the school as TKP commemorated RHD on 21 July to the theme, ‘Harmony in our Hands’. Pledge of Harmony in Our Hands done by students One, two, three, Lets do the line dance together The boys looking good in their Baju Melayu Blow bubble blow Together as one living harmony Beautiful dancers swaying to rhythm ‘Made In India’ A host of exciting activities and experiences in and out of the classrooms awaited the students. In the classrooms, students made hand cutouts and wrote names of their friends of other races on the fingers before pasting all cutouts onto the banner in the hall. Presentations in class also taught students something different about every race. Team-building games conducted at the parade square allowed students of different races to work together enjoyably. The booth activities in the hall have always been the highlight of every commemoration, owing to the tireless efforts of our dedicated Parent Volunteers. Learning about the other races was made more meaningful at the well-decorated Chinese, Malay, Indians and Eurasian booths, where the activities gave students the opportunities to try their hands at something novel. The commemoration ended on a high note with a concert put up together by our talented students who awed the audience with their songs and dances. Students were also taken on a virtual tour to the different places of interest related to each race. Happiness filled the air that day as we celebrated diversity and harmony in a multi-racial Singapore! 8 STRENGTHENING CHARACTER AND INCULCATING VALUES The Magic of Children's Day 2015 Students' VIA Project - Visit to Old Folks’ Home “If you can dream it, you can do it.” “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” - Aesop These inspirational words by Walt Disney encapsulated the Disney theme of the 2015 Children’s Day celebration at Tanjong Katong Primary School. The teachers and parent volunteers worked tirelessly to transform the school grounds into the happiest place on Earth; demonstrating that it was not by a wave of the magic wand, or the sprinkle of pixie dust that turned visions into reality. VIA is an integral part of the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) curriculum, which seeks to develop our students into compassionate individuals who can care and serve the community. In Term 3, our P4 students embarked on Project C.A.R.E.S (Care for All, REach out and Serve) where they visited either an elderly home or a care centre. Prior to the visit, volunteers from HCA Hospice Care took our students on a journey to learn the needs of elderly, and how our little acts of kindness put a smile on the their faces. Little princesses, knights along with fairy-tale folks, super heroes and Disney characters were greeted with balloon sculptures and carnival cheer as they enter the school gates with huge smiles on their faces. It was a humbling experience for all the students involved. Many of our students took the initiative to interact with the old folks despite the language barrier. Some of the classes also put up performances and played games with them as part of the interaction. From our students’ enthusiasm and pride displayed in carrying out this project, they have demonstrated that one can be compassionate regardless of the age, race and religion. They may be small in size, but definitely big-hearted!! Students enthralled with Disney mood The students took turns to enjoy the array of activities at the carnival. The ice cream and popcorn booths proved to be very popular. Tanisha Allana from Primary 5D, gushed, “We have never been treated to ice cream! This is the first and it’s the best ever!” All geared up for their performance for the old folks! Students from 4E singing their hearts out Teachers' VIA Project - Ride for Rainbow “Do you want to eat some popcorn?” Some classes also enjoyed the time with their teachers and friends at their class parties. On 9 October 2015, Mdm Uzaimah and Ms Tan Pei Ning took part in the annual 60-km Ride for Rainbow event organised by Club Rainbow to raise funds for chronically ill children and their families. For the TKP riders, the event was even more meaningful, especially as more than $6,100 had been raised for Club Rainbow in the name of our late Mr Terrence Loo – the ninth-highest amount raised by an individual rider this year. Mdm Uzaimah and Ms Tan felt they had fulfilled the wish and supported the cause initiated by the late Mr Loo for this cycling event. Despite hazy conditions and not being used to cycling long distances overnight, both teachers trained tirelessly and felt it was an honour to do their part for the 700 children who would benefit from the donations. They shared that they would continue to participate in the Rainbow cause for the children for as long as they could. 6 Altruism at their Class Party The celebrations for the day culminated in an amazing concert. The highlights include a quiz on guessing Disney characters to mass-dancing to the beat of Whip Nae Nae. There was no end to the squeals of delight and cheers from the delighted pupils. It was indeed an unforgettable day for the pupils in TKP! PARTNERING STAKEHOLDERS FOR A STUDENT-CENTRIC EDUCATION TKP Open House 9 FamilyMatters @ School Student Workshop / Talks Parents having a hands-on experience in a classroom. Our very own ICT captivates the audience. This year, the TKP Open House was held on 5 June with the involvement of mainly the Primary 1 and 2 teachers, as well as the key personnel and the school leaders. We spoke to Mdm Kausar Karimi, a representative from our Parent Support Group (PSG), and she candidly shared her views about the event. What did the school do to facilitate registration without having the parents to come to the school before the event? In partnership with Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) FamilyMatters@School, TKP continues to bring onboard a series of student workshops/ talks to equip our students with life skills training. These workshops were identified after level teachers came together during level meetings to discuss issues or concerns students face. Professional speakers, trained and experienced in their respective area of expertise, were then invited by the Parent Engagement Team to address these needs. The following table shows the student workshops/ talks organised for the respective levels: Level Title of Talks / Workshop Similar to last year, the parents had to first register online to get a ticket to come and see our school. Hi-tech, I would say! Primary 3 Conflict Management Primary 4 Time Management Primary 5 How to Overcome Bullying Could you explain briefly how useful this online registration was? Primary 6 Personal Effectiveness Yes, the parents came in, showed their e-tickets and were led by our ever enthusiastic P2 students to their designated sitting areas; this was meant to facilitate the school tour later on. The programme then began without a hitch. Don’t Stop Believing Managing Change & Transition to Secondary School Without going into too much detail, can you tell us what was in store for the parents visiting the school? Overall, the responses from our students have been positive. They have learnt much through the strategies, videos, anecdotes and illustrations presented by the invited speakers: The Principal, Vice Principal and I, on behalf of the PSG, addressed the parents to start the programme for the day. Following that, they were led to different classrooms along with 2 parent volunteers (PV) who were also sharing with these parents their experiences in Tanjong Katong Primary along the way. “The time management talk helps me to understand ‘stress’ and taught me to keep stress at moderate level. I also learnt that managing time well helps to relieve stress.” - Sarvesh Srinivasan, 4 Charity. What do you think are the key things that these parents observed and took away with them? They were impressed by our teachers and the various programmes that the school has in place. Many parents gave the feedback that there was certain camaraderie between the parents and the school which had drawn them to visit our school. We would like to thank Mdm Kausar Karimi for taking time off to do this interview. “Primary 6 is a crucial year for me and my friends. We will feel stressed and face difficulties in our studies. I was engrossed throughout the talk. The eloquent speaker taught us how to relieve stress. Nepoleon Hill once said, “A quitter will never win and a winner will never quit.” Don’t stop believing.” Park Soo Ah, 6 Benevolence. 10 SG50 HIGHLIGHTS One of the Red Lion skydivers gliding down while the fighter-jets make their special 50 formation. ilee in lden Jub o G ’s re apo sea of ted Sing was decked in a ra b le e c with KP ol etime T e style! Communication & decision-making at the heart of all successful creations! 11 Ms Liza Rahmat Vice Principal Heritage Gallery at TKP As part of the TKP heritage education, a heritage gallery has been set up in the school to document the history of Vice Principal’ s Message TKP, its ancestral schools & Katong heritage. This gallery is 2015 marks my 17th year in education and I still officially launched on 19 November, in conjunction with remember fondly the early days when I started the Prize-Giving Day 2015. Despite having a relatively my journey as a beginning teacher in Beatty short history of 15 years, TKP has had an interesting past Secondary School. Through the years, I had the opportunity to take on other roles in National Education and Pupil Well-Being that developed me further professionally. Nine years later, I was posted as Vice-Principal to Xinghua Primary and then to Greenridge Primary where I served for the last seven years. as an amalgamation of Fowlie Primary School (a merger of Publications of the former schools gathered Fowlie School & Seraya School), Haig Boy’s School & Mountbatten Primary School. Interestingly, some of our current teachers were ex-students or staff from these former schools. To better understand how school life was like before, interviews were conducted with ex-teachers, principals, staff & students. In June this year, I was posted to Tanjong Katong Primary (TKP). I am truly appreciative of how the School Leaders and staff had warmly welcomed me to the TKP family. The culture of care is strong in TKP and this is evident not only among the staff, but also with the parents and pupils. I am heartened by how parents and teachers work so closely together to provide the best care and experiences, and the pupils have benefitted from this close partnership. A few parents who were ex-students of the former schools were also interviewed. We are especially thankful to interviewees who have donated valuable items that represented the schools, to serve as artefacts at the gallery. Our school is also privileged to be situated in the heart of Katong, an area rich in history and culture. Hence, the heritage gallery will also document a brief overview of the history and development of Katong through the ages. Moving forward, we hope that our many generations of students and the community can work hand in hand to I look forward to working together, as partners in education, with the wonderful staff and parents of TKP as we move forward and strive towards the new vision of nurturing TKP pupils who are Passionate Learners, Caring Leaders and Global Citizens! preserve Katong’s rich heritage for the benefit of future generations. On Friday 14 August 2015, anticipation hung in the air as the Primary 3 students waited for the public speaking competition to start. The emcees, Dubash Brian Andreas and Neil Bhandari, from 3 Benevolence were confident and did a commendable job at hosting the competition which was judged by our panel, Mdm Anissa Ferdaus, Ms Amy Lam and Ms Nurulhuda. Contestants spoke on topics such as “How to save the environment?” and “Are examinations important?”. The following participants emerged as winners: The winners were awarded certificates of achievement and gift vouchers while the rest of the participants were awarded certificates of participation. Congratulations to all of them! All of us have benefitted much from the public speaking lessons conducted in class as well as from watching the participants in action during the competition. It really takes a great courage to stand on stage and give a speech. Here are what some of the audience and contestants have to say: I enjoyed listening to the speeches of all the participants. They have done an excellent job. I love the creative and fantastic ideas. I think they are all winners ~ Moira, 3 Benevolence I am inspired by the particiapnts’ speeches. I hope to be one of the participants next year. ~Neil Bhandari, 3 Benevolence I like public speaking because it develops my critical thinking skills and helps me overcome the fear of speaking to large crowds. It also makes me a more confident person. ~Timothy Kok of 3 Altruism TKPS Corporate Communications Team Members Mdm Sheena Lai, Mdm Anissa, Mdm Arlinah Arsad, Mrs Vijay, Mdm Aslinda, Mrs Eunice Lee, Mdm Cheng Hsing Mei, Mrs Ella Ong, Mrs Chen Seow Huey, Mdm Shairah Sulaiman, Mr Faizal, Mdm Nicole Lee, Ms Suhaili Nasir, Ms Khan Chen Yee, Mr Mostapha, Ms Phang Shiak Chien, Ms Goh Ying Shan, Ms Huang Cong
