Training for Scout Leadership and Parents
1. Youth Protection Training (YPT) - This course is required for all registered BSA volunteers, and is strongly suggested for
Parents as well. Leaders are required to take the training before or within 30 days from submitting their application. YPT must
be renewed every two years. A leader cannot remain registered if this expires. To take YPT, go to www.myscouting.org and click
on [Create an Account]. Once you’ve registered, you will check your email for a message with a link to click to finalize your
account. (If you are a registered member, be sure to put your Member ID# and Council Name at the bottom of your profile.)
Remember to keep your User Name and Password for future use! Now you can click on the Red “Take Youth Protection” button
and begin.
2. Fast Start Training - You can also take a quick orientation training for your Leadership Position in MyScouting. Click on the
tab of the program you are in (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, etc.) and choose your course.
3. This is Scouting - A great introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting.
You will learn about the organization of Scouting and its various programs.
4. Leader Specific Training - Another required training for our Scout Leaders. This will train you for the position of leadership
you are assisting in. All Cub Scout Leader position coureses are available online, as well as Boy Scout Troop Committee member.
Other Leader specific classes are offered throughout the year for Scoutmasters and Assistants, Venturing and Varsity leaders. A
Leader Specific class and an Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills course are both required for Scoutmasters and Assistants.
5. Supplemental Training - MyScouting offers many other courses that may be required when taking a group on an outing,
or to a water activity. Take them all and Be Prepared! University of Scouting is another training opportunity to attend with many
courses to expand your knowledge. Wood Badge is a Leadership Training Course designed to develop your leadership skills. This
is a 6-day course (over 2 weekends) using leadership concepts, methods and materials that will strengthen your skills not only
for Scouting, but for home, office, and everyday life.
AUGUST 2015
Rocket Into Scouting
This is the time we visit all of our schools
and invite new families to join Scouting.
This is the first part of our year-round
recruitment program, which will enhance a
quality Scouting program.
Silver Beaver Award
The Silver Beaver Award for distinguished
service is the highest award presented
within a local BSA Council. Volunteers
nominate men and women who are doing
an outstanding job as Scouters for this
award. These nominations are reviewed
by the Council Awards Committee and the
most outstanding are selected to receive it.
The committee welcomes all nominations
and encourages you to recommend those
Scouters you believe worthy of this honor.
Annual deadline for nominations is August
31. Download a nomination form from our
website at www.bsa-brmc.org

POPTOBER 2015
Popcorn Sale
Beginning September 18th and ending October 31st, over 4,000 Scouts throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains Council will
be visiting neighborhoods and store fronts selling gourmet caramel corn, trail mix, cheesy cheese, microwave popcorn, and
other delicious popcorn treats. Is your unit participating? We hope so!
Proceeds from the sale provide camp maintenance and improvements to ensure a quality program for all Scouts.
Troutoree
Troutoree is a day-long trout fishing derby in the stocked lake at Camp
Powhatan. A per person fee is charged. This is a wonderful time for parents
and sons and entire units. You must provide your own equipment. Units may
camp overnight with an approved short term use permit.
Internet Advancement
Advancement Forms are REQUIRED to purchase Advancements in the
Scout Shop. Units are responsible for recording youth advancements in their
Scouting program. One person within the unit serves as the advancement
processor. You log onto the website through a link on the Council’s home
page. The processor uses the unit identification number, unit number, and
his or her own created password to access the service. Once records are
submitted, they are automatically transferred to the Council’s ScoutNet
database. All advancements should be entered before the close of the
calender year, and the Advancement Forms should be printed before
heading to the Scout Shop to purchase awards.

DECEMBER 2015
Journey to Excellence
The Journey to Excellence is a performance assessment, communication and recognition program for the Council, District and
Units.
Journey to Excellence helps leaders achieve their goals for the Unit by giving a framework to assess how the unit is doing in key
areas including: advancement, membership, and retention, outdoor activities, service projects, leadership and training, and a
unit budget.
Journey to Excellence emphasizes factors which are early indicators of a unit’s strength and health. It also offers incentives for
continuous improvement. Better performance means a better Scouting program for the youth.
You can learn more about the Journey to Excellence program by going
to www.scouting.org and typing JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE
in the search box. Remember to complete the worksheet to turn in with your charter.

Camp Cards Help Scouts Earn their Way to Camp
A Scout is Thrifty - he EARNS his own way to Summer Camp!
Camp Cards are wallet-sized plastic cards that offer discounts and coupons from numerous local businesses to your
customers. When Scouts sell these $5 cards in their community, their unit keeps half of the proceeds to help them earn their
way to camp!
Cards are distributed at the March Roundtables, and the sale is two months long. This program is risk-free, as any unsold
cards are returnable.
Any Scout who sells 1,000 cards will receive a special prize!

Wood Badge
APRIL 2016
Experience the ultimate in Scout leadership training! Wood Badge
for the 21st Century is advanced training that will give adult
leaders the skills to make a difference. The course brings together
adults from all areas of Scouting (Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting,
Venturing, as well as the District and Council) who want to
become better leaders. Wood Badge training provides a common
foundation of leadership skills to be used throughout all areas.
Wood Badge teaches adults leadership skills over two threeday weekends. The course is not advanced training for outdoor
skills; however, some outdoor skills are needed for attendance.
Participants will leave the course with skills that will help them not
only become better leaders in the Boy Scouts, but also with skills
that are transferrable to all parts of their life.
U.S. Sportsman’s Alliance
The U.S. Sportsman’s Alliance Foundation puts on an annual
Trailblazer Adventure Day at Camp Powhatan. This one day
program serves as an all around introduction to the thrill of
outdoor sports and importance of conservation. This family
camping event features a variety of activities, demonstrations,
and orientation sessions designed to show Scouts and Leaders
what outdoor life is all about. Activities are conducted under
the supervision of experienced trail guides with an emphasis on
safety. This event will have an open format where participants
move between stations at their leisure. Possible activities include
archery, hunting skills and safety, paleontology, shooting sports
and fishing.

Ideal Year of Scouting
Planning the Ideal Year of Scouting is an important step in providing the very best quality program for the youth and families
of your Pack, Troop, or Crew. The process takes a fair amount of thought and effort, but the benefits to your membership (and
to you and the other leaders of your Scouting unit) will be apparent as you implement the plan during the upcoming Scouting
year.
The five steps to “Ideal Year of Scouting” success:
1) Develop an annual “Ideal Year” program plan.
2) Build a budget to support this plan.
3) Select one fundraiser to fulfill the budget.
4) Set family goals for one fundraiser.
5) Share the details of all of the above with parents and youth.

Silver Beaver Award
Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished
service is the highest award presented within a local BSA Council. A
recipient must be a registered adult member of the BSA. Volunteers
nominate men and women who are doing an outstanding job as
Scouters for this award. These nominations are reviewed by the
Council Awards Committee and the most outstanding are selected to
receive it. The committee welcomes all nominations and encourages
you to recommend those Scouters you believe worthy of this honor.
Annual deadline for nominations is August 31. Submit to the Silver
Beaver Awards Committee c/o Dan Johnson at the Council Service
Center. Presentation of the award is made at the Council Annual
Volunteer Recognition Dinner in November. Download a nomination
form from our website at www.bsa-brmc.org.
