Page 4 First Drive: Superformance Corvette Grand Sport Between Superformance and Shelby American there is no shortage of great Grand Sports, GT40s, Cobras, Cobra 289 FIA and Cobra Daytona Coupes Even in the rarified, no-necked, hairy-backed world of ultimate muscle cars and the men who love them, the Corvette Grand Sport is exalted. Rumble and growl all you want about your Cobras, your GT40s and your whateverthe-hell-else you think is the ultimate road brute, but the Corvette Grand Sport just might crush them all. We say this because we just drove one. No, sadly, not one of the original five Corvette Grand Sports made by the great Zora Arkus-Duntov. Those are all in private hands, lovingly cared for and even occasionally brought out to a track event here and there. The responsibility of driving one of those would be like having to juggle a handful of Faberge eggs, or reframe the Mona Lisa – you wouldn’t want to make a mistake. No, we drove a remarkably close replica made by Superformance and provided to us by Superformance authorized dealer Hillbank Motor Corporation in Irvine, Calif. You may have heard of the Grand Sport. Back in the early ‘60s it seemed America’s sports car, the Corvette, was being beaten regularly by America’s other sports car, the Shelby Cobra. GM, despite the official ban on motorsports, wanted to do something about it. So with a secret budget in a secret garage somewhere in a secret Warren, Michigan basement, Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov got to work. First thing was to lighten it up. The new car was even called “The Lightweight.” The stock Corvette weighed about a thousand pounds more than the Cobras that were beating it so weight was the first thing to go. Duntov replaced cast iron and steel components throughout the car with aluminum and magnesium parts wherever possible, and replaced the steel cage with an aluminum cage on which he hung thinner fiberglass body panels. Legend is you could see through them. The Lightweight then weighed about 1,300 pounds less than a stock 'Vette. Then he added more power. The first Grand Sport of the five, #001, got a 360-hp fuel-injected 327 V8. Eventually Grand Sports ran 377 cubic-inch aluminum small blocks with four side draft Weber's all good for 550 hp. Then they started beating the Cobras, and Corvette fans across the nation cheered. But to the Corvette Faithful, the cognoscenti, the potential future buyers Superformance hopes are out there? What years they were. Now you can relive the glory of that era. You can be Roger Penske winning at Nassau or Dr. Dick Thompson winning the SCCA Nationals at Watkins Glen. The Superformance Grand Sport - one of the best arguments for the new small-volume manufacturer law - is built around an “original-style” tube chassis with a lightweight fiberglass body all sliced up with vents and louvers to get all that air out and make it go faster. Of the five originals this replica looks most like #003, with side exhausts, wide fender flares to accommodate nine-inch-wide tires and even the rear differential cooler mounted on the rear deck. The deep blue paint and white racing stripe finish it off. Since it’s technically a kit, it’s sold minus the engine and transmission for $99,900. Owners can put in whatever powertrain they want. Ours had a mighty Katech LS3 making 550 h.p. mated to a five-speed manual trans. In the parking lot of Hillbank Motor Corporation in Irvine, Calif, 3,000 miles from Nassau, we clambered in. The Grand Sport is crude, yes, and brutal, of course, yet powerfully glorious. Push the beefy, meaty clutch pedal down go on, push it you wimp! All the way! This isn’t no Miata with “lightweight pedal action.” There’s no damned bud vase in here. Fire the big bore bruiser under the hood with a satisfying ker-whap! and listen to each explosion in each of the eight cylinders. Whapwhapwhapwheeeeee… Put it in gear, let out the clutch like it was some kind of weight machine at the gym where you’ve placed the pin way too low and whoosh, you’re off. 1963 never felt so good. The power comes on way down low on the tach. There’s no waiting politely for turbos to spool up or VTEC to do some high-tech whatever. All the power you will ever get all the power this nation will ever want is right there on the right. Just step on it. (Hey, are there any law enforcement personnel around?) The rear transverse leaf spring suspension and front coil overs with Bilstein shocks keep the whole thing in line at speed and in curves. But it is a lot of work. You are fully involved in the process of driving. You have to be present and at work for this thing to go. There is no cruise control, no autonomous robotic behavior nanny, no OnStar. There is only you and 550 h.p. from 1963. We rumble back into the Hillbank parking lot a new man, ready to hunt down and eat a live buffalo or at least operate a chainsaw. Instead, there are more cars. Page 8 First Drive: Superformance Corvette Grand Sport Citrus Vettes & Camaros Car Club Volume 3 Issue 3 Page 9 #3 & #4 Corvette C7.R Finish 1-2 For Closest Class Finish In Rolex 24 History Gavin Edges Garcia To Win GTLM By Only 0.034 Seconds For Corvette Racing, the question entering the 54th Rolex 24 At Daytona was simple: How do you top 2015? Last year, the team’s pair of Corvette C7.Rs won the Rolex 24, Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class and then the team won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The answer was delivered Sunday in an epic 1-2 finish, with the 2015 Le Mans-winning No. 4 Corvette C7.R of Oliver Gavin edging the 2015 Daytona and Sebring-winning No. 3 Corvette C7.R of Antonio Garcia to the line by 0.034 seconds, the closest class finish in the history of the Rolex 24. “What you saw today was simply the two best road racers in the world with the two best cars in the world,” said Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing program manager. “You’d be hard pressed to find a better race than this. You don’t spend 23.5 hours working this hard and not let those guys continue to race.” Fehan assured Garcia once he moved into second that there would be no team orders. After that, the battle for the win was on in the season-opening IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship race. Once he shed the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR of Earl Bamber to take second, Garcia set his sights on Gavin and the two ran nose-to-tail over the final 20 minutes. With three minutes remaining, Garcia briefly passed Gavin entering Turn 1, but ran wide, allowing Gavin to retake the position. Garcia got a run coming out of the bus stop on the final lap, but came up just short in a drag race to the stripe giving the win to Gavin and co-drivers Tommy Milner and Marcel Fassler. Garcia and co-drivers Jan Magnussen and Mike Rockenfeller finished second, while Bamber rounded out the podium in the No. 912 Porsche North America entry along with Michael Christensen and Frederic Makowiecki. “All I could think about was my boss, Doug Fehan and what he would say if we did touch,” said Gavin. “Then on the last lap I was thinking I had just enough on him, but then he towed up behind me. It was like the line was just going away from me. I couldn't get to the line fast enough. I've just seen a picture of it, actually, and it was pretty close.” NOTEBOOK The race winners were also the round winners in the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup. The No. 4 Corvette Racing C7.R entry won the round with 13 points as the result of a tiebreaker over the No. 3 Corvette C7.R and the two Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSRs. Page 10 Chevrolet to take two Corvettes to race at Le Mans! After 1-2 finish at Rolex 24, Corvettes to take on Le Mans On the heels of a historic 1-2 class finish in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Corvette Racing learned Friday that its two Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs have been invited to this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is the 17th consecutive season that two entries for Corvette Racing are part of the entry list for the motorsports event. As was the case a year ago, Corvette Racing will field the No. 63 and No. 64 Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs in the 14-car GTE Pro class. In it, the team will face a number of the same competitors as in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship as well as entries from the FIA World Endurance Championship. The full grid for Le Mans will be made up of 60 cars. "Being invited to Le Mans always is a special honor for everyone at Chevrolet and Corvette Racing, and we are fortunate to return as the GTE Pro winner,” said Mark Kent, director, Chevrolet Motorsports Competition. “Le Mans is where the best manufacturers compete in endurance racing's toughest test -- a place we have won eight times. The Corvette Racing team has a long history of success in long-distance events, evidenced by victories like our win this year at the Rolex 24." Corvette Racing has won eight times at Le Mans including a storybook victory last year for Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Jordan Taylor. They are back together for a second straight season; Gavin and Milner lead the IMSA GT Le Mans (GTLM) standings after their win at Daytona with Marcel Fässler. There will be new trio in the No. 63 Corvette C7.R Full-season teammates Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen second at Daytona with Mike Rockenfeller will drive with Ricky Taylor. The two Corvettes will take to the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe for the first time this year on June 5 as part of the annual Le Mans Test Day. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is scheduled for June 18-19. The next event for Corvette Racing is the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida on March 16-19 from Sebring International Raceway, where Corvette Racing also is the defending GTLM winner. Page 18 Camaro 1LE V6 heading for a track near you Camaro handling package offered on V6 model for the first time. Chevy is bringing back our favorite off-the-rack package for the 2017 Camaro. The track-capable 1LE will now be offered for both the SS and V6-equipped LT version of the legendary pony car. Both will debut at the Chicago Auto Show on Thursday. The 1LE package can be spotted by its satin black hood and trim, specific wheels and slightly bigger brakes on both V6 and V8 models. There are no special logos, except on the brake calipers, which means the only way you’ll recognize one of these is when it’s running away from you on-track which is what it was built for. “The Camaro 1LE packages follow a recipe any track-day enthusiast will appreciate,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Start with a lightweight, stiff structure and then add higher levels of suspension stiffness and damping, more aggressive tires, higher downforce, more powerful brakes and more cooling. The result delivers better performance in all measures. “In our development tests, the V6 Camaro 1LE delivers lap times comparable with the previous-gen V8 model. The 2016 Camaro SS 1LE sets the new benchmark for the segment, lapping the Big Willow track at Willow Springs three seconds faster than the standard Camaro SS.” The LT 1LE comes with the standard 335-hp V6, the FE3 suspension from the SS including dampers, mounts, toe links and stabilizer bars, lightweight wheels with Goodyear Eagle tires, four-piston Brembo brakes and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Additionally, the 1LE gets extra cooling, the dual-mode exhaust and a few other bits. Recaro seats and Chevy’s Performance Data Recorder are optional. The SS also sticks with stock output, which is rated at 455 h.p. and 455 lb.ft. Both 1LE cars come equipped with a six-speed manual as God intended. The SS 1LE gets Magnetic Ride Control as well as an electronic limited-slip differential, special wheels, Goodyear Eagle Supercar tires, as opposed to the Asymmetrics on the V6, six-piston front Brembo brakes, track cooling package and dual-mode exhaust along with the specific FE4 suspension tuning. The Recaros on the SS are standard; the PDR is optional. Debuting at a private reception at Callaway's Santa Ana, Calif. factory, the SC610 displayed a number of technical accomplishments engineered by Callaway and integrated into the new Camaro platform. "We're very proud of 2016 Callaway Camaro SC610, which is our latest offering," said Reeves Callaway, founder of Callaway Cars. "For 40 years, we've earned our reputation through our engineering and competition prowess. We've worked for the world's premier sports car manufacturers, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the new Callaway Camaro is very powerful and such a joy to drive. We designed this package for enthusiasts who want race car performance with perfect daily drivability." During the introduction, the Callaway team explained how the 2016 Callaway Camaro SC610 came into being. "With Camaro's new 'Alpha' architecture, our engineers were able to incorporate the Gen Three Supercharger that we originally developed for the Callaway Corvette SC757," said Mike Zoner, Managing Director of Callaway Cars. "We designed the Corvette system from a clean sheet of paper, applying features to increase airflow quality and reduce charge air temperature. Once we were able to adapt Gen Three for the new Camaro, we produced dramatically more power without jeopardizing reliability." The patented Gen Three supercharger system is the heart of the Callaway Camaro SC610 package. Its 2300cc Eaton TVS rotor pack is configured to force air upward into the supercharger housing. Power-robbing heat, inherently produced by supercharging, is removed from the charge air via convective cooling, as it flows through the supercharger housing. This effect is amplified by extending the housing through the hood, exposing it to ambient temperature. Conductive heat transfer is also utilized as the "Triple Cooled" intercooler system includes one main and two additional intercooler elements, conducting heat from the charge air for consistent power. The Callaway Camaro SC610 package also includes a Callaway air inlet system to further improve performance. To distinguish the Callaway Camaro SC610, Callaway carbon fiber engine mid covers, an under hood build plaque with VIN, interior and exterior badging, door sill panels, and embroidered floor mats are included as standard equipment. Each Callaway Camaro SC610 comes with an authenticity documentation package as well. Callaway Camaro SC610 MSRP starts at $54,290 (including the base Camaro SS), or at $16,995 as an option on the automobile. Callaway cars are specialist models, built on demand, with retail financing and warranty coverage. They are sold as new cars through selected GM Dealerships. In addition, Callaway provides the most comprehensive standard warranty among all specialty manufacturers. Page 22 Take delivery of your new Chevy at Daytona International Speedway Yes, it includes hot laps Daytona International Speedway underwent a $400 million renovation over the last few years which makes this the perfect time to take a few laps. What’s that? You’re not part of Hendrick Motorsports? No worries, Chevrolet has you covered -- buyers can now take delivery at the famous track. “The Chevrolet Delivery Center is the type of elevated experience that guests visiting Daytona International Speedway come to expect,” Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. “This new offering complements the enhancements already made to the ‘World Center of Racing’ through the $400 million DAYTONA Rising redevelopment project. We’re looking forward to witnessing that first delivery later this year.” Chevy buyers have long been able to get Corvettes delivered at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. That $990 option also includes a tour. Pricing hasn’t been revealed for Daytona delivery yet, but we’ll let you know as soon we find out. Expect the first slots to be available in late 2016. THIS YEAR’S SHOW IS BEING HELD AT THE SAME LOCATION AS OUR 2015 SHOW: THE SEARS AUTO CENTER PARKING LOT LOCATED AT THE CITADEL MALL 2070 SAM RITTENBERG BLVD. IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA 29407JUST DOWN I-526 FROM THE HOST HOTEL. **This show is limited to the first 250 registrants!!! Please note we will NOT be offering on line registration this year, however, our flyer is available to print from our website www.4cccc.org, share with friends or club members, and mail in the registration form located on the back of the flyer. Pre-registration is $35.00 add additional $5.00 if you are doing the Scored Judged show and preregistration will end on March 26TH. After March 26TH the registration fee will be $40.00. Show t-shirts will be available as a pre-order only and the cost is $20 and they will not be sold at the show. Proceeds from the show will benefit the National Corvette Museum. Trailered Corvettes must be off-loaded outside of the show area and must be driven through the registration station onto the show lot. Trailer parking will be offered near the show area. Due to parking limitations we will not be able to honor requests for clubs to park together. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience. For all pre-registrants there will be a Meet and Greet Affair on Friday night April 15th at our host hotel with complementary cookout & soft drinks. These areas include: engine, engine compartment, interior, body, paint, suspension, wheel & tire. For example: Five modifications to the engine results in one change to the engine area. STOCK No modifications MODIFIED 1-3 modifications SUPER MODIFIED 3 or more modifications PRO MODIFIED Any body cuts or Roll Bars V6 F-bodies You will have the option of showing your car in this combined class for V6 F-bodies. However, if you prefer to show in one of the primary classes, you may. We will award the Top 6 cars.
