Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness
In February, the Canadian Chambers of Commerce
released their 2014 Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness.
This initiative has been undertaken in the last couple of
years to draw attention to the barriers that are holding
back Canada’s progress and prosperity and to urge all levels
of government to act more swiftly to improve our country’s
ability to compete globally.
In the introduction to the Top 10 booklet, Perrin
Beatty, the president of the Canadian Chambers of
Commerce, states “Canada is struggling to stay
competitive. In fact, our country’s ability to remain a leader
among nations is stagnating.”
The Barriers exposed for 2014 include Skills shortages,
a complex and costly tax system, uncompetitive travel and
tourism strategies, and more. For more information or to
view the 2014 Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness issued by
the Canadian Chambers of Commerce; visit their website at
www.chamber.ca and click on the Advocacy tab.
Shaw Internet Service Update
On March 27th, Shaw sent out a press release
concerning Internet Service in Stettler.
Concerns were brought forth locally in March and
Shaw has followed through on their promise for
improvements.
Shaw’s press release reads:
“Customers in Stettler, AB should now see significant
improvements to their internet experience. This morning
upgrades were completed in the area that should elevate
peak performance issues customers had been reporting.
We appreciate your patience during this process and if
you’re still having any challenges please don’t hesitate to
Ask a question in our Internet discussion forum.
Thank you,
Shaw Community Team “
It is hoped that this is the beginning of service
improvements affecting businesses and networks in the
local area. Internet service issues remain a high priority to
Stettler Town Council for the near future.

Economic Update
*** excerpts from Economic Trends- March 2014
Alberta buoys Canada’s labour market
After a strong finish to 2013, Alberta has entered 2014 with momentum. Alberta continues to lead the provinces in
population growth and has accounted for the vast majority of the jobs created in Canada over the last 12 months. As
reported in the Economic Outlook of Budget 2014, Alberta’s economy is forecast to expand by 3.7% this year; the fifth
straight year above the province’s historic trend of around 3%.
National job gains concentrated in Alberta
Alberta continues to propel Canada’s labour market. Over the past 12 months, Alberta has created 82,300 jobs, which
represents 87% of all new jobs in Canada (Figure 1). Job growth has shifted to the goods sector following service-led growth
in 2013. Growth in earnings has also picked up, hitting a 7-month high of 4.6% year-over-year (y/y) in December.
Consumer spending remains healthy
Retailers in Alberta are benefiting from strong job and earnings growth in the province. Retail sales growth has accelerated in
every month since August, hitting a 2-year high of 9.8% y/y in January. While growth remains broad-based across retail
categories, sales from vehicle dealers have been particularly strong.
Alberta leads in population growth
Lured by job opportunities, people continue to move to Alberta. Alberta’s population grew by 3.4% y/y as of January 1, 2014.
This is the fifth straight quarter that growth has exceeded 3% growth. Alberta gained 134,300 people over this 12-month
period, the highest increase among the provinces (Figure 2). Net international migration hit the highest fourth quarter level
on record. While Alberta continued to add people from other provinces as well, net interprovincial migration moderated to
a 9-quarter low.
Oil and gas sector powers ahead
Output in Alberta’s energy sector continues to strengthen. Year-over-year growth in energy exports has been in the double
digits for the last five months to January, fueled by a combination of higher prices, rising production and a lower Canadian
dollar. Another sign of strength is capacity utilization in Canada’s oil and gas industry, which hit its highest rate in a decade at
86% in the final quarter of 2013.While the vast majority of Alberta’s energy mix is crude oil, natural gas exports have also
trended higher. A brutally cold winter has led to storage drawdowns and higher prices of natural gas, pushing the value of
exports higher and contributing to higher gas drilling activity.
A strong outlook...with risks attached
The oil and gas industry is expected to remain a key driver of Alberta’s economy, led by elevated investment and large
increases in oil sands production. There are risks to this outlook. Without additional takeaway capacity from Alberta, the oil
industry will continue to face large and volatile price discounts and rely more heavily on higher-cost rail transportation.
Higher cost escalation, for example due to lower – than - expected inflows of new workers from outside Alberta, is also a
risk. More globally, a slowdown in emerging markets, including the possibility of a financial crisis, would weigh on global oil
prices and hurt growth prospects for Alberta’s oil and gas industry. Renewed fiscal tensions in the Eurozone and the US could
also weigh on global growth and oil prices. On the upside, an immediate alleviation of transportation bottlenecks and
stronger – than - expected global growth could propel Alberta’s oil and gas industry even higher.

One person's trash is another's treasure!
Set your unwanted but usable items (furniture, household
items, etc.) on your front lawn on these 2 days. Other

Label your items “Free” or “Trash 2 Treasure”.

Agricultural Update
Benefits of Twitter
As social media grows in popularity, so does the
confusion around the multitude of available platforms
and how best to manage them. Arguably one of the
most relevant platforms to agricultural producers is
Twitter. For producers, it’s incredibly important to be
aware of how people interact with your brand in this
new online world.

Summer Farm Employment Program
Farmers thinking about hiring a student for summer
employment should start thinking about starting the
process. Alberta Agriculture is once again offering the
Summer Farm Employment Program, and the deadline
for applying for the Summer Farm Employment Program

Info Centre, provides details. >
Getting Into Farmers Markets
A one-day workshop that will examine selling food
products at Alberta approved farmers’ markets is being
offered by Explore Direct and Alberta Farmers Market

Access to Capital - Yours and the Banks
Agriculture is a capital intensive business, even at a
small scale. Equipment, land and working capital require
funds that typically exceed a beginning farmer’s savings.

Earth Day the Canalta Way
Canalta Stettler staff spends each Earth Day outside of the office cleaning up the
town to better the place we work and live. The cleanup this year will include the
Tot Lot Park behind the hotel, the meridian around the hotel, and other nearby
places. In addition to the outdoor spaces cleanup, the staff have decided to add a
new spin to help a cause that is always in need. Every day the Central Alberta
Women’s Emergency Shelter meets women and children who are leaving a life of
family violence and beginning the journey toward a safe and healthy future. As
they begin this journey, C.A.W.E.S. strives to provide them with the necessities to
make this transition easier. For the month of April, Canalta Stettler will be
accepting new and gently used household items for donation to the C.A.W.E.S. and
the women and children in need. As you spring clean your home, please keep the

welcomes input from stakeholders. The Code provides minimum employment
standards for employees and employers, such as overtime, hours of work, and general holidays.
You are invited to participate by visiting www.work.alberta.ca/esreview and reviewing the “Talking About Work”

Local Artist displayed in the Lougheed House Gallery
James Agrell Smith eventually regretted serving in the Canadian Navy, but he put his
journeys abroad to good use. The artist, who narrowly missed being sunk several times
during the Second World War, didn’t have access to much art education in his birthplace of
Stettler, Alta., but learned a lot from the greats in museums in New York and London. The
Lougheed House currently hosts a broad selection of his works, including prints, drawings
and paintings.
