Light the Fire
The California forest fires have blanketed news reports in past weeks. Images
of the massive flames spreading across thousands of acres decimating
everything in its path have been imprinted on us. We lift up prayers for the
families that lost their homes while we struggle to comprehend their feelings
of helplessness as they evacuated their homes that were in the path of this
destruction. It seems almost inconceivable of how a small fire that started
near a freeway exit ramp could destroy over 41,000 acres and 271 homes.
Fire is definitely one of our most destructive forces as well as our greatest
tool. The difference is in the application.
While fire can be very destructive as we’ve seen in California, it is also very
beneficial for many of our basic needs. It provides lifesaving warmth when
properly contained. It provides energy when properly designed. It provides
purification when properly controlled. The Bible describes God as a
consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29) and is often used to denote God’s presence
such as the burning bush and the cloud of fire that guided the Israelites. The
Old Testament sacrifices depended on the fire of the altar while, as New
Testament Christians, we are called upon to offer our bodies as “living
sacrifices” (Romans 12:1). John tells us that Jesus will “baptize you with the
Holy Spirit and with fire” (Matthew 3:11). Just as the priests of the OT were
commanded to continually maintain the fire of the altar we have been given
the gift of the Holy Spirit that dwells in the heart of the believer (Romans
8:9) and maintains the fire of our living sacrifice.
Berry’s Chapel stands on the precipice of igniting a fire that can burn even
brighter in our reflection of Christ. Our deacon selection process is underway
with the promise of strong leadership that will grow the Kingdom here in
Franklin and beyond. The outreach opportunities of the assisted living and
jail ministries have been extremely encouraging. We are beginning a new
school year with over 100 families that are using the Berry’s Chapel campus
for both the preschool and Foundations Christian Academy. Preparations and
planning have already taken place for this weekend’s Back to School Bash as
well as the coming Fall Festival. FriendSpeak will be an excellent
opportunity to engage people that look and speak differently from us while
we study from God’s Word, which draws us to a place of equality at the foot
of the cross. Our community outreach opportunities in September will give
us even more opportunities to fan the flame.
With all of these opportunities, the choice rests in us. We can choose to be
beacons of light for the Kingdom or we can choose to be a fire storm of
controversy. Putting our needs above the lost is playing with a fire that will
destroy much more than acreage and homes. Nadab and Abihu offered an
improper fire, and that certainly did not end well for them. In the same way
that a “controlled burn” is used to bring new life to a forest, let us all submit
to our King to be controlled by Him as we press toward the mark for the
prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). Satan will
throw distractions at us in order to divide our unified approach to growing
the Kingdom. May we all live by the words of Paul to the church at Colossae,
“And above all these virtues, put on love, which binds everything together in
perfect harmony. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you
were called as members of one body.” (Colossians 3:14)

She Was Crying
This last Monday morning I came and participated in the “Prayer Walk” for the 120 boys and
girls, their families and all the teachers of FCA that will be meeting in our building this school year.
They were so appreciative of the outpouring of love and acceptance that those who came from Berry’s
Chapel gave them. The adults walked throughout the building silently while the first day of classes
were beginning. If you had been there you would have seen for yourself what a great outreach this is to
these families who home school their children and who are interested that their children have a
relationship with God.
As I walked by one of the younger classes I paused at the door to notice a little girl sitting in the
lap of one of the teachers who was crying big tears as she began her first day of school. I could sense
that precious little girl’s anxiety and sadness about being away from mom and dad maybe for the first
time. I wondered about her fears and uneasiness as she began a new school year. All of us remember
those same moments when we or our own children shed those same tears because of a few fears and
anxious moments.
I could not help but think about our community and to think about how many were crying
today in their homes, at their jobs or just driving around looking for some answers. I thought about
those who live around our building and their need of a friend to sit with them when they have tears
because of the uncertainties and fear that comes from the times in which we live. I then thought about
our own church family and tears that we quietly have because of life. I bet that precious little princess
was not the only one crying on Monday. Let’s welcome our community and engage each other as God
gives us opportunity. I can’t wait to see you on Sunday.

BC Kids Super Stars
Our BC Kids Super Stars this week are all of the children from our Children’s
Worship. Every Sunday we do a children’s contribution and talk about how
God wants us to be a happy giver (2 Cor. 9:7) because of everything that God
has given us. We are using the current funds collected to send children’s vitamins with the
Wood’s to distribute in Greece. Due to the current economic disaster, many children are not
getting food or nutrients on a daily basis. Thank you to all the children and their families that
have contributed every Sunday!
Does your BC Kid have an achievement that we can recognize (athletic, academic, spiritual
growth, etc)? Please email Kristen at childrenseducation@berryschapel.org
