A LETTER FROM
OUR PRESIDENT
In Design Directions, we WILL HEAR about the 25th
anniversary the IMS is celebrating.
Dear ASID members,
The results of our recent member survey are complete. In our
ongoing efforts to keep our chapter open, transparent, and
welcoming to all members, I would like to thank everyone who
participated. The information gleaned from your answers will be
most helpful going forward.
Our programs, and lunch and learns are well received, with many
new suggestions. More social “fun” events are requested. Also
listed is the request for additional continuing education units and
an interest in more community service and outreach projects.
Clear communication with explanations regarding participation
in ASID events will be forthcoming. Many misunderstandings are
common. More clear communication on how decisions are made
regarding the events such as the Showcase House and Kitchen
and Bath Tour will be shared with our members.
Many members said they have volunteered or filled out volunteer
requests, and have never received responses about opportunities.
Clearly we will attempt to be better in appropriately tapping into
those who are willing to become more active.
All of these findings and more give us much to work toward. We
will go forward with new knowledge about what is important
to our membership. Each committee has the results that pertain
to them and will take into consideration what we have learned
as we move ahead. In addition, each new e-blast will address
specific FAQs one at a time to fill in some missing “blanks” in the
information out there in our chapter.

In an effort to streamline our publications, begin the move to
digital, and catch up with the green revolution we will begin
publishing the Annual Membership Directory within the Summer
Design Directions. To help us coordinate this effort we are happy
to announce Red Leaf, a graphic design and creative agency, as
our new publisher.
Thank you again to everyone who took the time to answer this
survey, insuring that the interests of the greater majority of our
members are being considered and more closely met.

PRESIDENT-ELECT
Through sharing we create a flow of thought —
a creative energy current — that is unique to us
AS A GROUP.
An important benefit of your membership to ASID is the sharing
of ideas, resources, and best business practices. Through sharing
we create a flow of thought — a “creative energy current” — that
is unique to us as a group. We are a chapter or society because
we possess collective ideas and goals that lead us to a common
purpose. Most often we gather at International Market Square
(IMS) to work on the issues and challenges at hand.
This year our chapter will celebrate the 25th anniversary of IMS.
One may question what the value of a major decorative arts
center is to local ASID designers. The building provides a core or
nucleus, where the tides of our individual design businesses ebb
and flow — a mainstay to anchor an otherwise fragmented body
of professionals. As we celebrate this special anniversary of the
building we also commemorate our chapter’s history. We focus
on our many years of passion for the decorative arts, building,
and architecture.

When I approach the doors of the IMS building, I find myself a
little exhilarated. I know that my journey to the building is sure to
produce a ‘eureka moment.’ It may be that I hear an inspirational
speaker, locate an exciting product or run into a colleague who has
‘spot-on’ words of encouragement for me that day. I am grateful for
a building that is dedicated to design professionals who have zeal
for the creative process and the places it leads them.

Interior Design Studios at the IMS: An Inside Look
This quarter in Design Directions, we are featuring four
professional ASID interior designers with showrooms and
studios at the IMS. Life is good at the IMS and good for
business. As the IMS celebrates its 25th Anniversary, we
surveyed our professionals with these responses:
Billy Beson, ASID
Bruce Kading, ASID
Beson Kading Interior Design Group, is a full service
Interior Design Studio specializing in high-end
residential design. Beson Kading designs retail
spaces, country clubs, condominium complexes, model units
and other commercial spaces.
Mary Dworsky, ASID
Mary Dworsky Interior Design is a residential interior design
studio working from the interior design conception, project
management, to the finished project. Mary specializes in downsizing, right sizing, and aging in place interiors.
Robin Strangis, ASID
Loring Interiors, LLC is a full service design studio.
Describe the advantages of having a
studio at the IMS?
Robin enjoys the convenience. Most of what she needs is at the
IMS. The location of the IMS provides Loring Interiors, LLC with a
professional image and her clients love to come there.
Beson Kading states: “The advantages of being at IMS are
numerable. We have thousands of square feet of home furnishings
and interior design products that our clients can actually touch and
feel without the high cost of inventory. We do a great majority of
our business through the vendors here at IMS and we receive topnotch customer service.”
Mary enjoys the energy of the building between the showrooms
and the designers. It is amazing and the convenience is incredible.
Mary can go to a
showroom, locate a fabric
or furniture piece in
minutes, instead of driving
around. At the showroom,
one can touch, see and sit
in the furnishings. This
is not available at home.
Mary’s clients love visiting
the building and are
impressed that her studio
is located at the IMS.
What changes
have you seen in
the past 25 years
at the IMS?
All of the interior designers

have seen an extensive
growth in the number of
showrooms, providing quality furnishings in all price ranges.
Mary noted a more up-scaled interior design of the restaurant area.
She has also seen an increase of interior designers and architectural
offices in the building.
Bruce stated, “The IMS continues to offer current fashion trends
in an ever wider assortment of product. IMS is a stimulating
environment which adds to the creative process.”
Robin has seen an increase in the public that is coming in and
purchasing. She has also seen an increase in “unqualified”
designers here as well. Robin said, “People seem to think if
they have a tax resale number, they can purchase.”
Bruce said the building has continued to improve and maintain
the design center making it more attractive to our clientele.
These constant improvements also make IMS a more enjoyable
place to call home.
ASID PROFILE
How do you see the IMS in the year 2020?
Billy firmly believes the design center will continue to flourish
and offer a wider scope of product and services to the design
community and the general public.
Bruce expects the IMS to become even more vital to the design
community by offering more unusual and unique product for the
ever changing market.
Robin was hopeful for a successful functioning trade building
in the years ahead.
Mary wrote: “I will be 72 years old then and God willing, I will
still be using the showrooms even in a walker!” Mary sees the
showrooms using more technology to show how a fabric or finish
will look on a piece, with a 3D picture of the furniture in the room.
Describe the biggest changes in the interior design
industry in the past 25 years:
Robin states: The internet has been good and bad. She likes
resourcing product, accessing catalogs, and placing orders on
the net. She does not like that consumers are doing the same
and finding ways to purchase at the lowest prices. It makes retail
pricing hard to do.
Billy says: “Today, more than ever, there is an interior designer for
everyone. Years ago only the high-end consumer would retain the
services of an interior designer. Now with the increased number of
interior design programs offered to students, we notice businesses
of every size from a one person shop to a large scale interior design
studio with multi designers under one roof.”
“Today’s consumer is more educated about design than ever before
and expects far more from their designer because they are exposed
to an ever changing
number of design
magazines, televised
design programs
and the internet,”
states Bruce.
Mary states, “The
internet has changed
everything. Clients are
more informed and
educated on what is
available, but there
is so much to choose
from. Many are
confused and really
require our interior
design services more
than ever.”
What are the
advantages to
participating
in ASID at the
professional level?
ASID provides us with
continuing education
opportunities, industry
events and legislative
professional support. It
offers us the opportunity
to find vendors and
industry partner’s
through-out the country
to assist in our out of
state projects.

elements of our industry.
ASID provides networking and valuable continuing education
which adds credibility to our profession.
ASID proves that interior designers have a certain level of
professionalism and education. ASID professionals are able to be
President and are eligible for the Designer of Distinction Award.
Describe any other trends, thoughts, or ideas you
would like to have featured in the ASID Minnesota
Design Directions:
We would like to see more networking for local designers and
industry partners through the magazine.
It would be beneficial to promote the Design Directions website to
the end consumer to educate the general public on what we do
and how we do it.
Mary just completed training for Certified Aging in Place — CAPS.
Mary states, “With millions of baby boomers like myself getting to
the stage in our lives where we need certain changes made in our
home to be able to safely remain there, I see a need for designers to
not only know what needs to be done to achieve this, but also how
to still make it look fabulous.”

Employee vs. Independent Contractor

In the economy of the past year and half, many have wondered
where their next dollar will come from. This is not only true of
businesses and individuals, but of government. We have seen
state governments step up the number of sales tax audits in
the past couple of years in an effort to both educate businesses
about sales and use tax guidelines and to increase tax revenues.
As the economy has slipped, unemployment benefits paid
have increased greatly, plus income tax revenues have declined
resulting in state government having less resources services.
As a result, we are seeing an increase in withholding tax audits.
One of the main focuses of these audits has to do with Employees
versus Independent Contractors. When someone is paid as
an Independent Contractor the state is losing unemployment
tax revenue and could be losing withholding tax revenue. If
a business is audited and the state rules a business should be
treating someone as an employee instead of an independent
contractor, the business could be liable on several levels. The
business could be subject to paying past unemployment taxes,
plus late fees and penalties. However, that could be small
potatoes compared to the other possibility. If a business pays
someone as an independent contractor but the state rules they
should have been paid as an employee, the business could
be liable for any income taxes not paid by the independent
contractor. Okay, now sit down and breathe deeply while you
recover. Then protect yourself.
Both the state and the IRS have written guidelines to help in
determining whether someone should be treated as an employee
or an independent contractor that are available on their websites.
The guidelines below are taken verbatim from the Minnesota
Department of Economic Security, but they are similar to the IRS
guidelines and would apply to most, if not all states.
The five factors that carry the most “weight” are:
1. C
ontrol. Does the firm or does the worker control the
means and manner in which the services are performed?
2. D
ischarge. Can either party sue for breach of contract or
can the firm or worker terminate at will without incurring
any legal liability?
3. Payment. Does the firm or the worker dictate the value
placed on these services? Is the worker paid by the job or
in a regular and routine manner?
4. I nvestment. Does the firm or does the worker furnish
any car or truck; tools or equipment; and/or materials or
supplies necessary to perform these services?
5. Premises. Does the firm or does the worker control the
premises where these services are performed?
Essential Characteristics of Employment
• The firm has the right to control the means and manner
in which the services are performed.
• The firm has the right to discharge the worker without
incurring legal liability.
• The worker is paid in a regular and routine manner for
services performed.
• The firm furnishes the worker with:
• Company car or truck,
• Tools or equipment, or
• Materials or supplies.
• The firm controls the premises where services are performed.
Essential Characteristics of Independence
• The firm’s only concern is the end result.
• The firm and worker are in a binding contract, where failure
to complete services is a breach of contract in which a legal
remedy may be pursued by either party.
• The worker is paid by the job, on a bid basis, by percentage
completion, etc.
• The worker furnishes all tools, equipment, materials and
supplies necessary to complete the work.
• The worker has substantial investment in the tools and
equipment used to perform the services.
• The worker makes his or her services available to the public
on a continuing basis.
When determining whether someone should be treated as an employee
or a subcontractor put yourself in the place of the government official
that might be reviewing your files. Keep in mind the government will
always err on the side of the employee. If you are uncertain about
how to handle someone performing services for your company, the
state will provide worker status opinions upon request. For additional

Student Expo at the IMS

On February 5th 2010, the annual Student Interior Design Expo
was held at International Market Square. In attendance were
561 students and instructors from 21 interior design colleges
from around the Midwest. This year’s theme, Back to Basics,
was highlighted in the keynote speech given by Letitia Little,
Allied Member ASID.
The students attended lectures held by design professionals on
several topics and ate lunch with designers and industry partners.
They had opportunities to network with vendors, make contacts
with local professionals, and were given designer-led tours of
several IMS showrooms. The Design Expo experience has become
an important tool for these students and is part of the curriculum
for several schools.
Committee members from the Minnesota Chapters of ASID,
IFDA, IIDA and International Market Square staff planned and
executed the day. If you are a design professional or a business that

Owner Marcy Russ, formerly half owner of Hoffsommer & Russ,
has brought the lines she previously represented to Blended Blue.
This new venture has allowed both Audrey and Marcy to realize
a greater vision of their respective showrooms and what they can
offer the design community.
The mission of Blended Blue, at its core, is flexibility. The design

The name Blended Blue is inspired by a view from the cliff
top town of Ravello, Italy. Eight years ago, on a brilliant sunny
morning hike looking off to the sea, Marcy describes her
experience as a total wash of blue coming over her. The sky and
the sea were exactly the same color with no horizon line. She
had a moment — the poem Blended Blue came to mind, and has

An Intimate Look at the History
of International Market Square

Today International Market Square (IMS) is known as the heart
of Minneapolis interior design. Showrooms from all facets of high
design grace the uniquely welcoming environment of the complex.
IMS is also the home office location of multiple design firms and
design based organizations such as American Institute of Architects
Minnesota (AIAMN), American Society of Interior Designers
(ASID), International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA),
Minnesota Chapter
American Society of
Landscape Architects
(MASLA), and National
Association of the
Remodeling Industry,
Minnesota Chapter
(NARI) to name a few.
The venue has played
host and backdrop to
many formal affairs
and gatherings making

more than a design destination but rather a unique bit of character
and history reinvented to play a part in our modern day lives.
Grounds for Innovation
It almost seems that the grounds themselves hold inspiration
for innovations in design, although perhaps not exclusively in
the realm of the interior. Back in 1887, a man by the name of
George Munsing opened the Northwestern Knitting Company
to manufacture his revolutionary “itchless” fabric two-piece
underwear. By combining silk and wool into a highbred fabric
Munsing brought relief from a life with itchy wool garments and
the demand for his product grew quickly to a global scale. To
adequately house the enormous operations, building along the
Glenwood Avenue site began in 1904 and continued for the next
eleven years until more than 650,000 square feet of operations
facilities were constructed.
Here again, innovation was abound. The construction in 1904
represented the first Minneapolis building using reinforced
concrete construction methods. Follow-on buildings for the
company also employed a new structural engineering innovation,
by Claude Allen Porter (C.A.P.) Turner, dubbed the “mushroom”
column. Once successfully demonstrated at the site, this building
technology also grew in popularity first locally and ultimately
throughout the world. A global scale. As quoted in the Minneapolis
Journal, January 21, 1905, “To the uninitiated, it has seemed
impossible that a building could stand without steel or wood
framework.” Eventually in 1985, C.A.P. Turner’s engineering
design earned the Munsingwear factory buildings’ acceptance
to the National Register of Historic Places as a credit to Turner’s
achievement in revolutionizing American building technology.
The Munsingwear Brand
Over the years the brand names of “Munsing” and “Munsingwear”
become such recognizable
terms that the company
formally changed it’s name
to The Munsingwear
Corporation in 1919. The
company continued to
grow and by 1923, it was
the largest manufacturer of
undergarments under one
name in the entire world.
Also, it was the largest
Minnesota employer of
women at that point with
85% of its work force being
women at a number around
2550 employees. Through
the years Munsing’s product
offerings grew not only in their
distribution levels about also
in their functionality and
they are credited for creating
the classic golf shirt with the
Munsingwear Ad
Penguin® logo.
1968 was the last production of the now American icon the
Munsingwear union suit. It played a large part in the history of
Minneapolis and in the lives of those that lived here during those
times. Minneapolis Star and Tribune columnist Jim Klobuchar
spoke for many with his memories of the company’s most
notable product: “For generations, nobody made longjohns like
Munsingwear. We wore them every day for seven months at a time
in northern Minnesota. Every Monday was a reveille for the town’s
longjohns. They were marshaled in white regiments on the wash
line, hanging in frozen attention.”

International Market Square. “In their renovation from old-time
industry to new-time design, the Munsingwear buildings have been
approached with respect for their original character and an eye for
the polish and excitement that a design center should have,” said
Richard Faricy, FAIA, Vinsor/Faricy Architects. And thus began a
new chapter in the story of this structure from days gone by.
IMS Today
IMS today is more than a design center, it is a one-of-a-kind
destination to be experienced. It still exudes its old fashioned
charm, but with a modern twist. The one time five building
complex is now a large interconnected multiplex with walkways
that seamlessly intertwine the architecture of the past with designs
even new for today. The complex is now home to more than 70
showrooms as well as residential loft spaces. At the very heart of
the complex stands the five story atrium, once the Munsingwear
railway courtyard, which plays host to anything from festive
gatherings to large scale power design conferences. If you have
the luxury of a moment of quiet here, listen carefully, you may
just catch the echo of railcars past reminding you of the long
and interesting heritage of the space that is now known as the
International Market Square.

The Operations of IMS

For twenty five years, International Market Square has served
as the premiere resource center for the Upper Midwest’s design
community. Formerly the homes of Munsingwear textile
manufacturing, the six historic buildings were transformed into one
through the combined efforts of San Francisco’s Kaplan McLaughlin
Diaz Architects and St. Paul’s Windsor Faricy Architects. To date,
IMS is still Minnesota’s largest renovated building and is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places. In 1985 IMS opened its
doors to become a Twin Cities icon, the Minneapolis Design Center.
Prior to its existence, members of the design trade would travel as
far as Chicago or Denver.
While IMS serves professionals in the architectural and building
trades, its primary focus is to provide resources to interior
designers. The vast experience and knowledge held by showroom
personnel allows designers to make the most efficient use of their
time. The IMS continually works toward making the designers’
efforts productive and satisfying.
All designers are invited to attend the IMS First Thursday
Showroom Presentations. On the first Thursday of each month,
from 10:00 to 11:00 am, three showrooms present the product
lines they represent, explaining the range of price points and
custom capabilities. The schedule is listed monthly on the IMS
website: www.imsdesigncenter.com.
Design professionals can also search for products using Design
Center Search, devised by the same company that created Firstdibs.
com. The program allows a designer to explore the vast array
of products offered by IMS showrooms via the IMS website.
Accessing the search mode from the home page brings the
product lines to the professionals’ fingertips. For those hard to
find items the designer also has the option of using the IMS
Showroom Shopper service.
The IMS is changing its policies. Like most design centers in the
U.S., consumers are not only welcome but encouraged to see all
that we have to offer. Accounts within the showrooms are still
held only by trade professionals but the building has adopted a
“Public Always Welcome” policy in order to educate end users.
Through extensive marketing efforts, IMS is eager to educate
consumers so that they have a better understanding of the interior
design profession and the beautiful products available to them
by employing a design professional. Consumers that visit IMS
without an interior designer are introduced to one of the members
of the Design Connection, a group of experienced designers that
volunteer time to assist IMS guests.
International Market Square embraces its relationship with ASID.
Recognizing the tremendous efforts put forth for the benefit of
the interior design profession by the area’s largest interior design
organization, IMS lends support to many of ASID’s major events.
Throughout each year the Minneapolis Design Center proudly
sponsors ASID’s Showcase Homes, Kitchen Spectaculars, Sample

CAMBRIA
Cambria’s design center in Minnesota is located in
International Market Square near downtown Minneapolis.
International Market Square serves as the heart of the design
community, catering to the needs of interior designers,
architects, builders/contractors and their clients. The
showroom shows unique applications of Cambria such as the
curved front decorative electric fireplace in Devon and Clyde.
The mitered edges throughout the fireplace lend to a sleek,
modern look. Also, the showroom displays the latest trends
in countertop application, such as the chiseled edge island in
Kingston (9mm thick) which creates a rough and natural look.
It is coupled with island cladding and a water jet carved detail
in the backsplash.
Another kitchen display shows how to mix and match Cambria
colors with the wave pattern cut backsplash that alternates
Templeton and Devon. The mobile kitchen island shows
how to use both quarry (multi color movement) and desert
(monochromatic) in one piece to compliment both colors. Cambria is a privately held, family-owned company with

Design Professionals, INc.

Design Professionals had its humble beginnings in early 1992.
A number of people Dorothy Collins had worked with for many
years came to her with a problem. The wholesale showroom part
of her old Collins studio business was being closed. She hesitated
slightly since her plans were more in the direction of retiring
but the wholesale side of the business presented some interest.
We organized some friends and family members to assemble the
company and find a space for Design Professionals. International
Market Square looked to be the best location. We moved into the
IMS later that year.
In, 2008, the IMS developed a master plan with kitchen and bath
tenants being the category of choice for first floor tenants. Design
Professionals moved to suite #308, our present location. During
that move we expanded again on second floor into suite #267 with
our Artitalia showroom.
Why Design Professionals
Showrooms are often opened by vendors to show their products
or by representatives to facilitate the sale of a particular product
line. Design Professionals came from a different vantage point,
the design side of this business with a designer’s perspective. Our
concerns go beyond the product or the sales process. We want
to know if a vendor can produce the product when they say they
will, at the quality level they promise and address problems if they
arise — traits that take time to establish. Many of our current lines
are domestically produced by older established firms with “long”
track records because of this. We truly understand how important
it is to have a quality product and a vendor who will stand behind
it, what follow thru means and how important it is to get it right
the first time. We understand because we have been there standing
in front of that client and know how it feels. When we opened
Design Professionals we gave up the design role but continue to
understand the importance and responsibilities of that partnership.
Staff
One person that truly understands the importance and
responsibilities of that partnership is Ruth McCarthy. She has been
an integral part of Design Professionals from the very beginning.
Ruth also brings with her a wealth of product knowledge. Her
husband, Tom McCarthy, a well established figure in this industry,
was very instrumental in getting Dorothy started in the business
many years ago.
Product design plays a critical role in our business and Garin
Collins, our buyer, draws upon her extensive design background
to select the right product at the right price for each season and
to find the fabrics, colors and looks for next season. We also
understand that designers sometimes need things right away, either
for the convenience of their client or to complete a project by
putting the finishing touches on a room.

Vendors
An integral part
of this entire process is the group of vendors that we chose to
support. Century Furniture, Harden, Clyde Pearson Co., Ferguson
Copeland, Ltd. and Guy Chaddock & Co. have been cornerstones
in this industry supplemented in key design areas by vendors like
Lorts, Artitalia Group or even DIA. We are constantly trying to
find vendors that demonstrate good product design with a true
understanding of their partnership role in the design process.
Our existing vendor base has also grown as the furniture industry
works through these difficult times. We continue to see more
established companies expand their offerings by developing or
acquiring complimentary product lines. An example of this is
Century Furniture’s work with Richard Frinier and their extensive
line of outdoor furniture. Goal

Friends at the IMS

“There has to be a better way.” Every new business starts this
way… Francis King was no different.
I would like to say that I choose high end, design oriented
furniture as a career, however, it was the other way around. After
selling suture and surgical staplers to surgeons and nurses for
several years, I landed a job with a design oriented furniture
company. The first thing I noticed was there were customers who
wanted to speak with you and that they enjoyed discovering
new products (surgeons and nurses want no part of this). I also
noticed the passion that is evident throughout our industry. It
is a genuine passion found in design studios to factory floors.
Wow, I was actually selling something tangible to folks that were
honestly enthusiastic.
INDUSTRY PROFILE
After 16 years of traveling on the road, I knew there had to be a
way to sell furniture which required less tire rubber. I witnessed
successful operations as well as long operating family businesses
that were struggling to stay open. There were people that I
enjoyed working with and others … well, not so much. One
thing I noticed, but never cared for, was the fact that the nicer the
furniture was, the more serious the tone.
It was after I received the ultimate compliment in sales for
the second time (having your territory or commissions cut) I
thought, rather than buying new tires, let me look at this from a
different angle. The showroom concept seemed like a good one. I
knew lots of designers and the Monday through Friday schedule
was certainly appealing. There was this nagging seriousness issue
though. Oh well, I thought, I’ll just be myself…
Over the years I was involved with product development
meetings and met many people through the factory side of the
business. Attending market twice a year for two weeks at a time
was also a great way to get to know people. As the years went by
many of my friends took on increasingly influential positions in
the furniture industry. FK really is a bridge from Minneapolis to
High Point. It’s our job to find the best that the industry has to
offer, bring it to the people in our area, attract the business, and
pass along those benefits to the factories that we represent. I love
going to market and knowing folks at every turn. Sometimes my
traveling companions get annoyed though…
There are some very talented people on this side of the business.
I first met Lynn Diedrich thirteen years ago at a store in St Paul.
She was selling, buying and displaying, always with a sense of
humor. Mary Carl was at a store in Edina and I was taken with
the fact that she had grown up in the business. Her father owned
a furniture store in Grand Forks. She would drive out to the
farmers in a station wagon full of accents and accessories. Her
coworkers stopped laughing when she came home with cash
rather than merchandise. Petra Engan and I also met at a store
in Edina. Petra was always focused and task oriented, though
not without a sense of humor … it’s very important to laugh.
Kali Peterson, I got to know after the showroom had opened. I
noticed her passion for design as well as her laugh immediately.
Just ask to see her fish picture, next time you see her.
Collectively, we offer over 77 years of experience in the furniture
industry and have visited over 68 markets. You might say we
have sawdust in our veins. These are the people that make FK
successful. They show up everyday with a renewed sense of
passion, commitment and laughter. Folks often walk into our
showroom and say it sounds like a party. Wow, I think, that’s just
what I was after…

Zachary Ltd. opened in 1996 at International Market Square.
The idea was simple: a showroom that offers something different
and unusual to the trade that requires time, knowledge and
legwork to locate and acquire. Deliver these ‘special finds’ to the
Interior Design/Architect client with convenience and
great service. Although Zachary Ltd. is always evolving and
in a constant state of change, we pride ourselves on continuing

Our inventories of vintage and antique pieces come from many
different sources, including several shipments each year from
France. We also receive pieces from China, India, Thailand,
Mexico, South America, and other parts of the world. We have

and design possibilities. Our hand painted furniture from Brazil
can be selected from beautiful illustrated catalogues or can be
totally customized — style, colors and size.
In addition to the vintage and antique furnishings and accessories
and art, we also offer two lines of upholstery — Barclay Butera
and Four Seasons. For style and quality, Barclay Butera, is
considered one of the finest available in the industry for complete
custom capabilities. Four Seasons offers slip covered or fully
upholstered frames, which are relaxed and beautifully simple.
We also have distressed leather seating and trunks available. We
carry a large selection of lighting — new, contemporary, deco to
antique. All are available to purchase off the showroom floor.
From the very start, we have represented local artists and
artisans. This includes accomplished works in oil, watercolor,
drawings, and photographs. One such artist whose work
we have been pleased to present for the last several years is
Natasha D’Schommer, known for her photographs of original
masterpieces from the Scheide Library at Princeton University.
Zachary Ltd. is known to have a large, fabulous selection of
accessories. Many interior designers and trade partners, photo
stylists and photographers rely on us, sometimes just hours
prior to a large project or installation. We like to think that our
offerings help them find their ‘complete vision’. All of our dried
and silk floral offerings are carefully and meticulously hand
selected. From framed rare antique wax seals and French handcolored antique wildlife etchings to a beautiful seashell or a dried
root you are sure to find that special item needed to add interest
and character to your project.
As a service to our loyal clientele, Zachary Ltd. also features many
gift items, handcrafted cards and stationary, and an industry

Green and Gorgeous
Decorative Finishes

Green, earth friendly, and sustainable are all terms we see
and hear a lot of these days.
What does “green” mean for a decorative finish? Do we have
to compromise beauty or function to “go green”?
A green product or service is one that delivers comparable or
superior performance and other benefits to an alternative one
while using fewer resources, containing fewer toxic materials
and boasting a longer life cycle. In the world of decorative paint
and plaster finishes, green is measured against how the quality
of the air you breathe will be affected by what products you
choose for various surfaces. All paints, plasters, glazes, etc. are
measured for their VOC (volatile organic compound) levels. The
lower the VOC level, the fewer toxins are in the air. Government
organizations and regulations, such as the Green Seal GS-11
mandate what can legally be called green, or low in VOCs.
Like a fine wine, the beauty of a decorative finish is in its
complexity and undertones. Various mediums can be applied in
layers to achieve variation in textures and color. This provides
the artist with many opportunities to create and offer finishes
with lower VOCs, depending upon the needs of the client/

project. For example, the average decorative finish might have
four layers of medium. By using a zero VOC basecoat for the first
two layers, next applying a low VOC plaster, then glazing, we
have significantly reduced the VOC levels of the finish. Another
option would be to apply two coats zero VOC basecoat, then two
layers of plaster with a VOC content of 25 grams per liter for a
beautiful finish that is very green!
Thanks to growing awareness and changing laws, many low
and no VOC options are now available for decorative finishes.
One example is a product line by Modern Masters called Shizen.
Shizen is a Japanese word that means naturally beautiful, and
beautiful it is! The product line includes four different plasters:
Kai (meaning shell), Kyoto (a city in Japan), Koruku (cork),
and Pataan (meaning pattern). The Shizen line also offers a zero
VOC basecoat
and textured
basecoat as well
as several other
products, meeting
criteria for LEED
certification. One
of my favorites is
the Kai plaster.
It’s made from
crushed sea shells,
giving a sheer and
luminous textured
pearlescent feel.
It contains less
than 25 grams
per liter of VOCs,
and actually
cleans the air by
absorbing harmful

be emitted by
other materials in
a space!
These products layered in various combinations and colors
along with Modern Masters low VOC metallic paints can
be used to create an unlimited number of finish options for
walls, accents, furniture, backsplashes, stove hoods, and other
architectural elements.
Incorporating green products and practices into design is
good for the planet, good for each individual’s health, and offers
many beautiful options. When is comes to design, green and
gorgeous is possible!
