For comparison’s sake, the province’s waterways would come out to the equivalent of Germany. Some 85% of Quebec’s population live within 20 km of a body of water; many have actually grown up "on the water". The fact is that for the majority of Quebecers, maritime culture is a constant in their lives. And 40% of them practice at least one nautical activity each year. Some enjoy swimming or boating at the cottage and many others like to engage in sports fishing or more adventurous activities such as white-river rafting. The map on page 2 and 3 shows an overview of nautical leisure activities offered in the different regions of Québec Apart from all this “blue” coloring our maps, residents as well as tourists can benefit from the pleasures of the water due to numerous leisure companies offering various nautical services. Cruise lines, excursions, retailers, manufacturers, sailing businesses, scuba diving specialists , water-skiing schools, rental shops, marinas, nautical clubs, beaches, interpretation centers and marine museums are among the many partners in an industry contributing to boating and nautical activities. They most certainly add to Quebecers’ and visitors’ quality of life. Guides, charter captains, boat sales representatives, nautical sports schools, marina operators and other professionals work together with fantastic dedication to provide memorable experiences for their clientele. PHOTO CREDITS : VILLE DE ROBERVAL The Club Nautique Roberval, an outstanding Eco Friendly Marina We live today in an ever changing environment where human activity can have negative consequences. Organizations and the general population are invited to modify their behaviour and habits to try and minimize the potentially harmful effects they may have on the environment. In recent years, various measures have been implemented to incite us to adopt “greener” practices. The boating industry has been part of this. Thanks to the Clean Marine Program in Ontario and British Columbia and the Eco-Marina Certification of Quebec, marinas have been invited to engage in more eco-friendly management operations. Whether it is in boat maintenance, pump-out stations or the dock management and supply procedures, marina operators have committed to provide environmentally friendly settings and services. Many marinas distinguish themselves in that regard. It is the case of the Club Nautique Roberval. Due to their efforts to fulfill the requirements of the Quebec Marine Association (QMA) program, they obtained the highest rating of 5 Eco Drops for 2015. Last November, Boating Ontario (founder of the Clean Marine Program) chose the Club Nautique Roberval as the Eco-Marina by Excellence Award for Quebec. This prestigious Award has tremendous value for the marinas troughout Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec. In 2014, the Club de Voile Deux-Montagnes obtained it 5th Eco Drop, making it the first marina to access to the highest ranking in the Eco-Marina Program. 04 QUÉBEC NAUTIQUE MAGAZINE PHOTO CREDITS : ÉTIENNE BOISVERT 05 QUÉBEC NAUTIQUE MAGAZINE NOT TO MISS QUICK TIPS 3 destinations to discover on the water Safe Boating: The how-to Whether on a holiday or a night off, with your friends or your family, from sailing to motor boating, water related activities are always fun. Put on your personal floating device (PFD) and make sure everyone on board wears theirs. 07 07 QUÉBEC NAUTIQUE MAGAZINE If you are the captain of the ship, follow the zero alcohol policy! The fact is, alcohol affects you even more when you are boating because of the pitch and roll motion of the boat. Always keep your Nautiguide onboard. Including the complete Safe Boating Guide, the Nautiguide also refers you to a detailed list of marinas in Quebec as well as some nautical charts. Stay safe and have fun! DISCOVER THE NAUTICAL STATIONS Quebec Nautical Station, a quality label for your destinations In Quebec, the boating and nautical leisure industry has a very strong presence in recreational sector. Boating is growing in popularity as every inland body of water has its share of summer-long nautical activities. Smaller bodies of water are often more oriented towards fishing, canoeing or swimming while larger ones offer countless opportunities as much as being considered as separate destinations! The Quebec Nautical Station program was implemented in 2007 in order to promote and give recognition to these destinations. With 16 widespread destinations created today and known as "Nautical Stations", the Quebec Nautical Stations network keeps growing. Sailing, power boating, kayaking, scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing, cruises and whale watching are only a few of the of the activities offered in these destinations. You will find in each many attractions like training schools, rental shops, excursionists, museums and interpretation centers and other service providers. The "Nautical Station" accreditation stands as a quality label for each destination, with regards to the services and nautical activities offered and the ease of access of the information on these destinations. This voluntary-based program constitutes a key component in the promotion of nautical tourism-oriented regions. Visit the upcoming pages to discover thee 16 Nautical Stations. With more than 20 years of navigation under his keel, Leblanc is still passionate about sailing, something which inspires many and that most people can only dream of. We have questioned him on what it means to be a skipper in this day and age. Let’s see what he says about it. - Georges Leblanc What is a typical day? I would say that there are two such days for a skipper, with one being on training and the other on racing. Training consists in having the team going to sea, 12 or 13 persons, to prepare for a race. For this, I will recreate real situations that could happen while on the racing course and this is where I can correct things, give advice and provide tools by which the whole team will improve. For example, such an event could be “How to make the boat perform at its best in heavy weather”. Sometimes, a training period can be as long as 14 to 20 days, nonstop. This is very demanding on everybody, but that is what prepares us for an oncoming competition, it’s really important. When racing, I try to make sure that everyone is happy, but most of all, I want to make sure that safety comes first at all times. I want my crew to be in good health before and after the race. Being at sea is a lifestyle of its own; it’s about certain values, about being tolerant and it is also about stamina and endurance. As a skipper, I can sleep 3 hours a day with 20 minutes naps. I have to do the navigation, make repairs if necessary, and cook for the crew. It never stops. And I have to stay alert at all times. Which path did you follow in order to become a professional skipper? I have been involved in sailing for more than 38 years. I was at first an admirer, pure and simple, of the sport and then I got into regional competitions for some 16 years. Along the way, I went from crew to skipper. Competition was something that appealed a lot to me, so I got into it at the international level. This is what I have been doing for the past 22 years and I’m involved more than ever with my Georges Leblanc Team, which was called Voile Océanique in the past. What do you like most about your job? There are two things that I appreciate most in the job of being skipper. One is of course offshore navigation. I can explain it this way: “when at sea, nobody can lie”! If I may add this, it’s “simple”. The other one is the human connexion with the crew. My role is to bring the crew to surpass themselves and go outside of their comfort zone. Other than showing them the way of a certain lifestyle, I strive to make them live the experience of a lifetime. The human contact aspect has to lead to crewmembers feeling appreciated and to offer each one a positive experience on board. What advice would you give someone who wishes to become a skipper? Many come to mind as well as various qualifications a skipper must acquire. 1. I would say that you have to be a good sailor first. 2. Someone who wants to become skipper must also have the attitude of those who live at sea and that means being able to take things as they are. 3. Next to that, the skipper has to be able to give to others. 4. You have to be a little crazy to do that. Well, the truth being said, I personally don’t do it for the money, but for the passion of the sea! Lastly, I would say that the skipper has to be ready to accept the consequences. I’ll explain. The kipper is the captain of the boat and he is the one who makes all the decisions. If, for example, the boat sinks (you could say that is a failure), the event will be tied to the skipper. It will be said that he was responsible for it. On the other hand, if you win a race, success for the win will be directed at the crew. “Being a skipper is to be perfect, even if it is not possible!” 42 QUÉBEC NAUTIQUE MAGAZINE PHOTO CREDITS : GEORGES LEBLANC 43 QUÉBEC NAUTIQUE MAGAZINE HOW IT WORKS Health Benefits of Boating Free and accessible, iNautique allows you to display an interactive map which lists marinas, harbours and sailing schools across Quebec.
