Pentecost Sunday June 8, 2014 There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. - Acts 2,3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE MENSAJE DEL PARROCO Dear Parishioners, … when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them ...” One day I asked a young man in the catechesis: What does the Holy Spirit mean? He answered in a simple way: “It is like the oxygen that we cannot see, but that makes its presence known in a very spontaneous way in our lives, strengthening our fears and weaknesses, to carry us through the day in our journey.” The Gospel tells us that the apostles’ “door were locked for fear of the Jews.” Why were they afraid? Fear is a sentiment that we find from ancestral times. We find an example in the disobedience of Adam and Eve: “I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid” Gen 3:10. Fear exists as a defense mechanism to prevent our body from possible dangers. It can sometimes be imaginary … But the apostles feel real fear. Christ’s death has been devastating for the apostles. However, as soon as the Holy Spirit appears all the apostles’ fears disappear completely and they go forth preaching openly before the crowds, among them was Peter, who courageously preached the message of salvation. “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins …” Acts 2:38. Hechos 2,38. As we see in the Gospel, spiritual strength comes to the primitive community through the Holy Spirit that pours over the apostles, through the “seven gifts” of the Holy Spirit. The gift of Wisdom: “they heard them speaking in - Continued on page 7 their own tongue.” - Jn 20:19-22 Page 2 - Jn 20,19, 22 MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK Saturday, June 7 5:00 PM † Molly Mackowski † Gemma de Guzmán Sister D. I have some great news to share with you. But first I want to congratulate you, the parishioners of Immaculate Conception, for your faithful financial support to your parish. Over the past seven years we have been able to pay “religiously” (pardon the pun!) the parish debt/loan, thanks to your commitment. Now, in a very generous gesture, the Archbishop has forgiven the balance of $2,663,391.86 of the debt. This is both a fantastic farewell present to me and a great welcoming gift to your new pastor, Father Manuel Alvarez. But, most importantly, it is an acknowledgement to the sacrificial efforts you all have made. Thank you Archbishop Wenski. God is good, all the time. Immaculate Conception Parish is debt free. Your continuous support is still very much needed. God bless you. - Father Paco CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES TO OUR 8TH GRADE GRADUATES Congratulations to the 8th Grade students of Immaculate Conception School who graduated on Saturday, June 7th. - Padre Paco I.C. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit that our Church will become evangelized and evangelizing give testimony of life without fear. - Fraternally in Christ, Rev. Francisco Hernandez SAINT OF THE WEEK - Saint Ephrem, Deacon It is believed that Ephrem was born in the village of Nisibis (in what is today Iraq) around the year 300. It is not known if his parents were Christians. Tradition says that in his youth he accompanied the bishop of his hometown to the Council of Nicaea in 325. One afternoon he abandoned his father’s house. He began his pilgrimage and traveled from village to village eventually crossing the desert. He lived among hermits and became familiar with their customs. He sang and prayed with them. While he was on the caravans, he meditated and fasted with them and spoke about the Sacred Scriptures. He wrote mystical poems and doctrinal hymns. The Christian communities knew Ephrem as a popular religious poet. St. Basilic Magno ordained him a deacon, but could never make him accept the priesthood because he did not consider himself to be worthy of that dignity. He preached to the people and comforted the afflicted. His speeches had the flavor of a dialog between the soul and God. He also wrote a prose commenting on the sacred books. Inspired by biblical doctrine, he composed homilies, which he used to educate the people. Ephren died on June 9th of the year 373. Pope Benedict XV canonized him in 1920. JOYFUL AGAIN!
