Welcome
TO THE 13TH ANNUAL RALEIGH PREMIER CIO FORUM
It is our pleasure, along with our conference partners, to welcome you to the thirteenth annual Premier CIO Forum
in Raleigh.
With the Premier CIO Forum, attendees across the region have come to expect a dynamic agenda with relevant,
up-to-the-minute topics and exciting speakers who will share their wealth of knowledge and experience, helping you
to gain practical insights into your business challenges. The conference includes powerful keynotes, informative
breakouts, discussions with subject-matter experts, and cutting-edge solution providers.
Our partner, The Society for Information Management (SIM), is an organization intended for Senior IT Executives to
discuss and share experiences related to technology and business structure. The group’s mission is to provide an
open forum, devoid of sales and marketing solicitations, for area executives with IT decision-making responsibility to
network and share their experiences. The Premier CIO Forum adheres to all guidelines which prohibit solicitation by
anyone, except for the requested solution providers who have been hand-picked by the Executive Advisory Council of
CIOs and Senior IT Executives specific to this region.
We have worked diligently to put together a stimulating and focused agenda, bringing together experts, visionaries
and professionals from the IT industry. We look forward to sharing this exciting conference with you.
THE RTP SIM CHAPTER IS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH PREMIER EVENT MANAGEMENT IN THIS EXCLUSIVE

OPENING KEYNOTE: EVERYONE’S IN SALES; MAKE IT A PROFIT CENTER BY SELLING
YOURSELF AND YOUR IDEAS TO THE ORGANIZATION!
Presented by: Todd Cohen, Professional Speaker and Author of “Everyone’s in Sales”
Discussion: CIO’s and Senior IT professionals, as well as all IT professionals, must know
how to sell themselves and their ideas every day to ensure the long term viability and
growth of the IT organization. Connecting IT to the business is mandatory and it all starts
with people knowing WHAT you do and HOW it will help them achieve their goals. In this
engaging and highly interactive session, professional speaker and author of the “Everyone’s
in Sales” Todd Cohen will show us the principles of building a successful sales culture so
the IT professional sees how they contribute and more sales happen! Todd has worked with
many IT organizations such as Subaru of America, International Flavor and Fragrance and
NFI Industries and has spoken at numerous IT conferences to bring this very diverse and
dynamic message about how we all sell every day!

Discussion: The emerging world of information technology is one in which data is king,

finally delivers on IT’s role as a driver of business growth. In this discussion we will identify
emerging trends that challenge long-held assumptions about IT and are poised to reshape
the business landscape. The panel will also contemplate “action steps” that high performing
businesses and governments can take to prepare for the new world of computing.

Discussion: While the business of doing business has always been a driving force behind
IT services and strategy, many new and sometimes disruptive technologies, such as hybrid
cloud computing or the abstraction of end user computing, force the business to take stock
in how they should adopt, manage and support them. Sometime it seems to be a question
of “Who is transforming whom?”
In this session, we will present some of the current market trends and case studies from
an expert panel on projects that have been transformative to their organizations. We will
review how companies need to adapt to best support the new technical paradigms and
also discuss how IT can establish a regular communications cadence with the business
-- one that reinforces the relationship building, changes the conversation, and enables IT to
provide services that meet the demands, drive value, and accelerate revenue.

Discussion: Not too many years ago, IT was seen as innovative and helping to drive the business.
Now, many organizations view IT as the “Department of NO” with processes and requirements that
inhibit productivity and business agility. Business users want to take advantage of mobility, cloud,
social networks and other technologies they use in their day to day lives outside of work and struggle
to understand why things operate so differently in the office. Join us for a discussion around how
you can leverage Identity and Access Management solutions to take advantage of mobile, cloud and
social to strike the right balance between user convenience and acceptable business risk.

terms frequently. Our speaker has a unique perspective on these topics that he has humbly agreed
to share. He is referred to by many — including prime ministers, the world’s leading investors and
executives of Fortune 100 companies — as exceptional in the field of strategy and execution. He

WHY IS THE CYBER THREAT AT THE TOP OF OUR NATIONAL THREATS?
Presented by: Doris Gardner, Retired FBI Agent and Current Threat Intelligence Analyst, Mandiant
Discussion: This presentation, both from an FBI and private industry point of view, will define
the cyber threat, identify threat actors, provide you details on how they operate and preventive
measures. It will have two case studies included: one from private industry, and one from the
FBI. The better we understand the attackers, how they operate and their motive, the harder it
becomes for the attackers to commit a breach. This presentation will define the cyber threat,
identify threat actors, provide you details on how they operate and preventive measures.

OPENING KEYNOTE: LEADERSHIP: THE OVERLOOKED ART
Presented by: Art Hopkins, Executive Director, Russell Reynolds Associates
Member, Atlanta SIM Chapter
Discussion: Most leadership discussions focus on the usual imagery of battlefield bravado,
sports spectacles, or corporate conquests. Leadership - The Overlooked Art offers a unique
perspective to leadership thinking, inviting the audience to contemplate leadership in
radically different ways and look for it in the most unlikely of places.
In this thought-provoking presentation, Art Hopkins guides the audience through a series of
relatable moments in which foundational facets of leadership are on exhibit, and in which
we can all reflect on our own leadership opportunities and how to (re)discover them.
As a “reformed bank accountant”, IT consulting veteran, CEO of a leading design firm, and
now executive recruiter Art Hopkins has learned a thing or two about leadership from his
family, mentors, peers, and employees.

BUILDING A HOUSE OF QUALITY ONE BRICK AT A TIME
Presented by: Chris McMillan, Business Analyst, City of Fayetteville, NC
Discussion: Organizations are generating more data than ever before, yet they are still
starved for knowledge. Effective organizational performance management systems can
transform available data into the knowledge needed to enhance decision making capability
and instill a culture of quality in the workforce. Attend this presentation to learn how
the City of Fayetteville, NC is building a house of quality one brick at a time through its
organizational performance management system.
BUSINESS REENGINEERING, INNOVATION AND IT ALIGNMENT CIO IN THE MIDDLE EAST WHAT IS IT REALLY LIKE?
Presented by: Rusty Bruns, CIO, American University of Kuwait
Discussion: This presentation will focus on re-engineering that increases productivity and
aligns IT with business goals, even if the business does not know what they want/need.
When previous IT Heads produce very little, the business expectations are kept very low.
By showing the business leaders what IT can accomplish, the connection between IT and
business actually occurs and the whole institution benefits.

To truly simplify IT in today’s virtualized data centers, the “data problem” must
be addressed: ensuring performance, capacity, mobility, manageability, and
protection of data without driving up CAPEX and OPEX. This requires new data
architecture—one that takes a VM-centric approach, ensures adequate IOPS to
fuel application requirements, and drives dramatic efficiency. SimpliVity’s Data
Virtualization Platform delivered in commodity x86 building blocks simplifies IT
infrastructure and operations, and uniquely enables data mobility and efficiency. SimpliVity reduces IOPS, capacity and
bandwidth requirements, and provides native data protection, eliminating the need for separate hardware and tools—
resulting in a 300% TCO savings. Visit www.simplivity.com or info@simplivity.com.
